I come here strictly for the menudo and since I consider myself a connoisseur of the soup traveling all over and trying it from different places, I settled on this place where I've been coming to for many many years and a change of ownership after the original folks retired. They were wonderful to me. When I order menudo I strictly ask for no pata, (pigs feet) as I find it with too much fat that it grosses me out, but people like it. Go figure. But when I got home there was all this fat in it and I took it out as I ate it. When I was done it was like a 1/4 of the bowl. When I brought it back to show them the young cashier said the bone is the pigs feet not the nerves. What?!! That is the pigs feet. But since i didn't see the owner. I didn't push it but after fifty years or more of eating menudo I've never been told that. But the food is authentic and quite good. Homemade tortillas hits the spot. This is taco heaven! Their tacos are absolutely tasty! My sister introduced me to this hole-in-the-wall in the heart of Little Mex (this specific side of Middlefield in Redwood City.) I ordered two beef tacos with mild sauce and everything on it. The tortillas were warm and soft. The meat was moist and extremely flavorful. They put in the mild sauce, diced onions and cilantro. They added some extra mild sauce and limes on the side. Did I mention they don't skimp on the meat like some of the other taco spots I've been to. Well, they don't. I eat at Paisano's a lot. In fact, I'm sort of addicted to it, and you will hear me talk a lot about it... For years I've ordered the costillas in red sauce, which is my sons Diego's favorite, but recently I've been focused on the menudo. My friends will tell you my preference is to go on Mondays, when there's less of a crowd, and the richness of the menudo reaches its peak. I usually eat quickly, but this is a meal that I sit and enjoy. It's a special bowl of menudo. You will appreciate the salsa, the kind made of oil with the layer of Chile at the bottom (like in Chinese restaurants). It's consistently very hot, and one of the main reasons I like to eat there. If there is a crowd, the wait can be long. They make the tortillas to order, and by hand, so it takes time. The tortillas are big and soft, and when I bring friends it's often what they call out first. I've also eaten burritos, tacos, flautas, chilaquiles, and tamales but stick to the dishes that are in the steam table (just ask to see what's available). Take it from a Mexican who grew up on grandmas recipees, this place knocks it out of the park!! I felt like I was a grandmas rancho house in Mexico. This place is a diamond within a pearl wrapped in gold. It's located in the Mexican ghetto but don't be afraid, it's the poor people's ghetto, not the gangster ghetto. Parking is rough and you might have to walk a bit, but I'd walk miles to get here. It's that damn good. I had the enchiladas with Jerky, which is rare and the taste was supreme. There are places that can make enchiladas taste really GOOD, but few can make the taste MEXICAN. It's borderline umami. They have a small red oil chile paste on the table which is also rare to find, unless you know how to eat spicy, don't touch it. It is for connoisseurs only. As I was eating and staring out the window across the street, I noticed a weird trend. Everyone that stepped out of this place was carrying a popsicle. It first started with two guys standing outside Jay and Silent Bob style just eating popsicles out front. Then a multitude of children, some teenagers and then almost everyone else I saw. So the co-worker and I wandered in to find a full on Mexican grocery/convenience store and taqueria in addition to the popular box of popsicles everyone seemed to be buying. The flavors are all over the map, lime, strawberry, mocha, cofee, mango and one of the strange ones, cucumber and chili (which my co-worker tried). Nice refreshing treats for a warm sunny day. Being that this place is so close to my new office digs in the Little Michoacan it has become a defacto lunch spot for me. Initially this was a little weird, because I am not accustomed to getting my lunch at a mercado (I am more inclined to hit a straight-up taqueria), but it has grown on me. This place is uber-Mexican right down to the phone cards and rentable mail boxes in the front. Did I mention they have a fully functioning taqueria in back? Yeah, the food is muy delicioso.
