It had been a long time since I'd been here. Went on Saturday because we remembered the food and drinks to be supurb. This place was packed with large birthday and graduation parties but we were seated quickly. We were attended to quickly. And given the huge menu to review. We remembered that we loved the wings so we got lemon pepper flavor. Also got the queso and trojas dip (queso with shrimp, steak and chicken). Those wings are some of the best. The trojas dip was just queso with a few large pieces of fajita meat in it. I wasn't impressed. The plain queso was so good! The salsa is just ok. Almost like tomato puree. As for the entrees. 3 of us got birria tacos. 3 of us HATED the birria tacos! If I'd tried birria here first, I would have sworn them off for good. They were bland and over cooked. The consemme was even bad. One person sent hers back. I can't remember the name of the other entree but it was like chopped meat and peppers. It was OK. My friend and I got the Bob Marley drink. It's huge but doesn't pack a punch. At least not for me (my friend was feeling it). I'm sure this place has good strong drinks based on the crowd so I'll try something different in the future. Las Trojas Cantina on Hwy 280 delivered a fun and colorful evening out. The atmosphere is big and lively -- lots of space, TVs, and definitely a place you can bring friends or family. I ordered the chimichangas: one grilled chicken, one ground beef. The chicken chimichanga was a win -- nicely seasoned, crisp shell, full filling, and the accompanying rice/beans were hot and fresh. One of those quintessential go-to Mexican restaurants. Lots of drink and food options and huge dining space. Manager was nice enough to change the TVs around us to the game we wanted. The Alambres was sizzling fresh off the iron skillet. It's essentially a fajita type dish with beef, onion, peppers, cheese and a side dish of the classic rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guac. Corn tortillas over flour all day, every day. And a "medium" sized pacifico lager. The price wasn't cheap for Mexican food, but I would rather have quality Mexican food and pay a bit more for it. There is definitely a difference in quality between some Mexican restaurants. read more

The food is Latin for sure but not Mexican enough for me. Mi mama is my litmus test. I usually try tacos, rice and beans. If you can't pass the basics, the Margaritas won't help. Much better Mexican food to be had on Hwy. 280. I ordered the beef tacos, and they were absolutely terrible. Some of the worst I've had. The meat was mushy and silky in texture- something like baby food- with no flavor whatsoever. One of my dinner partners ordered a steak quesadilla, which was tasty but was $19!!! This place is WAY overpriced. My other dinner partner ordered the enchiladas special- a ton of food on the plate but just mediocre. This place is huge and was packed with people. It's way overpriced. Los Trojas Cantina has been my go-to Mexican restaurant since I moved to Birmingham. Wait times are usually not too long, and the service is always great every time I go. The servers are very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu is huge so I typically try something new everytime I go, and I have not been disappointed yet. One of my favorite menu items is the chicken chimichanga with rice and beans. The margaritas are also good as well. It is a bit pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants. I went there with my wife and ordered a burrito and taco combination for dinner. The beef had an odd flavor, honestly I was afraid to eat it. I promised some friends I would go eat Mexican a few weeks later, I didn't know this was their choice until it was too late. I asked if they had a shrimp quesadilla and the waiter said that they did. This place is a treasure! I met my friend here on a Thursday night at 7pm for dinner. We were promptly seated and greeted by our server. All the staff were wearing masks and the restaurant is very spacious and spaced out. The space is well maintained, clean and very festive. I think their chips really stood out. They are slightly thicker than what you get in other restaurants which gave them a nice bite. And they came out warm! For my entree I ordered a salad with steak and it was absolutely delicious. The portion size is huge, which did not deter me from wolfing it down. It also was only $10.25 which is a really good price. The salad had grilled carrots, zucchini and mushrooms on top of shredded lettuce and diced tomatoes. The veggies were really well seasoned, salty and modestly spicy, and retained good texture. The steak was slightly overcooked and bland but still acceptable. I really appreciated the service. We got our meals 10 minutes after we ordered. This was my first time coming to Las Trojas Cantina. I arrived around 6:30 pm. I met a group of 8. The restaurant is huge and was crowded. It's obviously a very popular place. We didn't have to wait long for a table. The menu is extensive. They serve everything from your typical Mexican offering to chicken wings and crab legs. The drink menu is extensive as well. It took 20 minutes just to look over the menu. Our server (bless his heart) tried his best but was overwhelmed by the crowd. The service was VERY slow. It took a long time to place our order and an even longer time to receive our food. The food was decent. I enjoyed my drink. But the service was not up to par. The prices are also a little higher than other similar Mexican restaurants. Lastly, the guacamole that was freshly prepared at our table was completely lacking in flavor. Do you like alcohol? I know I do so coming here for margaritas is almost always on my radar. They're big, they're boozy and the bartenders are so friendly. The coco margarita, bob marley, and best mexican margarita are all delicious. Want something extra boozy? Get the Cowboy drink that comes in a cute glass boot. It is kind of smokey (mezcal) and they only allow you to order 2 per person. The food is very generously portioned and is actually pretty damn good to be TexMex (I am typically not a fan of TexMex). My girlfriend and I always start with the fresh guac that is made table side. My only complaint about the fresh guac the last 2 times is that the jalapenos have had no spice at all. Other than that, it's great. Our other go to options are shrimp fajitas, chicken tacos (lots of flavor), crazy quesadilla and fiesta plate (huge, delicious and shareable). This used to be our favorite Mexican place. We even came on occasion after we moved across town but tonight will be the last. After opening the menu to see the sticker shock of the doubled prices, we started in on the chips and salsa while we waited several minutes for our drinks to arrive. The chips were ok when warm, but after a couple of minutes you can tell they are quite stale. They have also gone to thinning out their cheese dip along with the price hikes. Tonight we say "adios" to our long time friend. I understand that times change and the economic situation is though with inflation out of control and gas over $4, but there are just too many negatives here to make the trip worth it. This place is good! I'm talking GOOD good! The portions aren't for the faint of heart, so don't fill up on the chips and salsa. That is easier said than done since the salsa is delicious. It's a smooth thick salsa that has great flavor. The hot salsa has a smoky chipotle flavor and is nothing but pure peppers, still it's delicious. I ordered the crazy quesadilla which our server, Juan recommended it was a fabulous suggestion. It had so much protein on it! It was a quesadilla overflowing with chicken, steak, green peppers and onions topped with a cheese sauce that had even more chicken, shrimp, tomatoes, and onions. It was incredible! The guacamole doesn't come in small ramekins with your order, we're talking about big dollops of it on your plate. My husband ordered the Alambres plate. He jokingly called it a Mexican philly cheese steak that he loved. Heaps of grilled thinly cut steak and bacon with grilled green peppers, onions topped with cheese and served with flour tortillas. Las Trojas is your classic Americanized Mexican cuisine. The staff is usually friendly but almost always occupied with each other rather than the tables they are serving. It's not uncommon to have to flag down your server. The food is VERY underwhelming. We did not enjoy the salsa. It was thick, smooth and had a lingering flavor we didn't enjoy...our guess was that it was old! We decided to grab a few beers and split lunch. The beer prices are okay. Not the best deals and definitely not the worst. If you get a draft beer they have two options: regular or an elephant foot. I opted for the regular. The beer was flat but at least it was cold. My boyfriend just got a bottle. No problems there. We ordered the chicken chimichanga lunch special with extra rice no beans. The chicken was so dry we couldn't even get it down. The rice was okay just a little overcooked (probably because it was sitting in a pan). The guacamole was not fresh and had a paste like texture. The tomatoes were probably from a can! We have tried Las Trojas at least 3 times over the past year (twice for dinner and once for lunch). But it's just not our spot. And after this time around we won't be back. read more
