The chips and salsa were wonderful! The chips are light, thin and fresh. The salsa was a thin base with a perfect balance of flavors. We ordered a small side of chunky guacamole. The avocados were fresh but the dip needed a little more kick. This restaurant has Pepsi products and we are Coke fans so just a heads up. The house margarita was okay again premade mix that just didn't taste exciting. The decor is fun, colorful and makes you feel like you are in an outdoor party. The staff were efficient and friendly. This was our first time here. The ambiance was nice with lights and all kinds of things hanging from the ceiling. Staff was friendly. They got my order wrong but quickly corrected it. The tacos were not that good to me. They were not bad but for my taste, they are what I like. I had chicken tacos and beef tacos. My wife had steak fajitas. Those were pretty good. Visiting Alabama for the next couple days attending this weekend's NASCAR race. Stopped in at Sol Azteca for lunch and enjoyed a couple of margaritas, the pork Azteca burrito and taco with refried beans and chili relleno plate. Everything was hot, fresh and delicious. The server was friendly, quick and always making sure we were enjoying our lunch. The restaurant was decorated for Halloween and festive. This was an overall great lunch experience. Came her on a Friday night and it was packed! I don't know what was going on because other patrons said it's not normally like that. The customer service was good for them to be as busy as they were. I got the #25 which includes a beef burrito and a beef enchilada. The enchilada was ok, but the beef burrito was very good. My daughter got the kids soft taco meal with rice and fries. After I scrapped the cheese off it she enjoyed it with salsa ( I totally forgot to order it with no cheese). My sister had the fried tilapia with fries. I tasted it and it was pretty good, but I'm just not a fan of fish with bones in it. We will definitely be back. read more

Great service! We had a table of 12 and were able to get orders taken and drinks/food given very quickly. They have been decked out for Christmas since right after Halloween and their decorations are beautiful. Visited on a recent trip to Birmingham, and we thought it was great! There was a bit of a wait since we visited on a Saturday night around 7pm, but we were seated soon enough. They had a band there (not really mariachi, but along those lines) and the whole place was alight with fairy lights making it a very festive atmosphere. Salsa and cheese dip were top notch! Sol Azteca off of Montgomery Hwy. is my favorite Mexican restaurant! It's decorated with plants and vines, and it reminds me of a Rainforest Cafe. I love their variety of vegetarian options, including a pretty thorough vegetarian combo menu. My favorite thing to get is a combo with a bean burrito, bean tostada, and a cheese quesadilla. I love getting their strawberry margarita pitchers with my friends too! Their pricing is incredibly fair, even the margaritas. We had lunch there. I was disappointed. It was not as good as it used to be. Prices are still same amount but portions are much smaller and food just looks different. Had chicken chimichanga and fajitas. Both were just ok. Steak, peppers and onions did not come on a hot skillet. Instead, it looked like they were stewed in a crock-pot and just placed on my plate. Steak tasted a little like a refrigerator. Got charged $1.50 for a small scoop of pico. Waitress didn't ask if I wanted it to pay extra and wasn't noted on menu. My dining companion did not enjoy her chimichanga. Was not fried like it used to be and was soggy. Cheese dip and chips were good, but probably won't go back. This place is definitely not consistent. The food is okay, nothing exceptional. Take out is a disaster, and when brought to their attention, they have no desire to make it right. DUST everywhere, it just really needs a thorough cleaning. Portions are extremely small on take out, compared to what they serve in person. Hands down the worst service I've ever experienced. We ordered our food and 50 minutes later, we found out that they haven't even started cooking our order because there was a "large" party. The table that walked in right before us was eating their food happily. The server's excuse was that a "big" party ordered right before us. Turns out that they all had plates and food in front of them. The waitress took forever to take our order and I bet she forgot to submit our order. She didn't even own up to making a mistake. Avoid this place like the plague. You'll starve if you're not a regular customer. The server still decided to charge us for the queso and drinks we ordered. I was impressed with every aspect of Sol Azteca! Very large menu with lunch and dinner specific areas. Too much to look over the whole thing as I was looking for a quick lunch (will return to go through the several pages of dinner menu). Friendly and quick service! Shortly after I was seated they were at the table with warm chips, and empty dish?????, and a container filled to the top with salsa.......let me just say I Love This! I don't have to ask for salsa refills. For those of us that go through salsa like it's water this is hands down the best idea. The lunch menu consists of very traditional lunch combo entrees. I went with the Tamale and Beef Taco with a side of rice. First the tamale. Corn shell was cooked perfect and topped with their specialty sauce (trust me on this one....mix some of the special sauce into the rice). Now I don't typically go for ground beef tacos, but today it sounded good. I have to say I was impressed! The beef seasoning was awesome! Taco tasted great and I would absolutely order one again. Reasonable prices and great tasting food! Very glad I gave these guys a shot today....I have another Mexican restaurant to add into the rotation. read more

We recently moved and needed a new local Mexican restaurant... after trying this place twice in the past week, I think we have a winner! The staff has been beyond nice and helpful both times I came in to eat. The food was delicious! The taco salad is my favorite item right now... best shell I've ever had with a taco salad. Worst Mexican spot I have tried in the Birmingham area! The menus literally says fried tortillas but the put chips on my plate. The water comes over and I ask why I was given chips when I ordered a plate with tortillas his exact response oh this is how they make it. so change the menu because that's not what I ordered and not what I want.
