I love this restaurant. They are always such a great treat. I went for a quick lunch with my sister here and we were seated immediately. They have great lunch specials and are very reasonably priced. There is always ample parking, but they can get pretty busy after 12. I have tried a few things from the menu, but I love their enchiladas. I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Staff are welcoming and always kind. Portions of food are definitely up to par. The best part...they make fresh corn tortillas every day. Good luck finding another Mexican restaurant nearby that makes tortillas from scratch. Good salsa, great chorizo dip, and tasty grilled chicken quesadillas. They have multiple options of fajita skillets, all of which you can add chorizo to. My favorite is the Chile Colorado with spicy steak. Their homemade tamales are also a great option. This is our go-to Mexican restaurant. Whenever we eat Mexican food at another location, only because we aren't in this area, I find myself always comparing the food to El Vecino. If you like tortillas that are made in a factory, mass produced, or stored in bags on grocery store shelves, do not eat here. Only authentic Mexican food here. We stuck with El Vecino even during Covid and carryout days, and we are glad they made it through what were probably difficult times. read more

The salsa and the rice were great. My tacos shells were stale. The beans were watery and the tamales had too much masa but they were pretty good despite that. My burrito was to tomatoey and the meat inside did not have much flavor. Service was great however the restaurant was noisy. read more

This was my second time here while visiting my father-in-law. My wife and I took her dad here since it was convenient and we needed a brake from Thanksgiving food. My father in law likes steaks so I said I can split the T-Bone with him. I also ordered two of the soft chicken tacos. The steak is a real bargain, steak, shrimp, and a potato for about $16.00. We ordered the steak medium rare. It was think, but cooked fine and really didn't any extra flavoring. Shrimp were actually cooked well, considering I live on the Gulf Coast and get great shrimp here all the time. The chicken tacos were tasty. My wife got chicken nachos and she liked the flavor. The salsa is mild for me so I add extra hot sauce to make it a little more tasty. All in all a good meal and service is good. read more

The food is very good but the owner is very nasty. I place a order for about 30.00 dollars and one of the item was a large cheese dip I received a small bag of chips that only had 20 chips in the bag so I call and ask why every time I come there it is always a problem with my food when he is working I told him it that way when I go to the other location that he work at. Customers he told me then don't come back I told him don't worry you will close up before I come back I will take my business some where else. If I could rate it 0 stars I would I called and asked if they take checks. They said yes I called ahead of time so I would not have to waist time. I drove 30 mins to go there from Gardendale and they said no they didn't take checks after I had already drove all that way. It's fine if you don't take checks but why lie over the phone before I came all the way. I was spending time with a loved one after her coming on military leave. Came with a party of 4 today after work. We immediately ordered a large cheese dip and four margaritas. We were brought a basket of chips and some salsa, along with our orders. The drinks weren't great, but weren't terrible either; just standard run-of-the-mill. We requested a second basket of chips to go with our large cheese dip and our waitress hesitated, but ultimately went to get one. Time passed and we were ready to order another round of drinks, so we flagged down our waitress (who hadn't been back to check on us at all). We requested a basket of chips to finish our cheese dip (we still had almost half a bowl left) and some drinks. She told us we were only allowed to have one basket of chips. I was confused, because I spent $8 ordering cheese dip and $25 ordering margaritas. She shrugged and said it was the rule and we would have to pay for more. The issue with that, for me, is that I had racked up a tab over $30 and couldn't even eat my cheese dip because I didn't have anything to eat it with. That "being the rule" makes no sense to a paying table who is continuing to order drinks/appetizers. Very confused and frustrated and definitely not planning to make that our new after-work drinking spot. Not great for hanging out or bringing groups, or for just racking up a bar tab! There food is delicious! We shared a shrimp cocktail. It has avocado and salsa and perdectly seasoned shrimp . I also ordered the shrimp fajitas and it was filling (also well seasoned). Very average interior for a Mexican restaurant. Staff are very friendly. Service is prompt. The food...well...in a word...meh. It wasn't particularly awful, but by no means would I say it was good. It was basically Americanized Mexican bland food. Nothing had the tastes you want in Mexican food. You want lime, cilantro, hints of garlic, fresh tomato, the heat of jalapeno, but it isn't there. I Visited August 28,2018 for lunch. I could not get that steak and shrimp image out of my head posted here. Turn out to be....Bad idea for me I suppose that was the night crew meal to make!! Chips and salsa was delish. The steak was tough, baked potato not cooked. The waitress was nice,we communicated very well until I told her my food was not right. I "NEVER" complain and send my food back for a second chance no matter the place of business. I pay and perhaps never return. I would have returned and tried again knowing I possibly picked the right meal at the wrong time of day..it happens, BUT when I went to the counter to pay my check..my same waitress was aggressive in her attitude, to say the least I remained calm because unfortunately some people are stained with "You were the aggressor" so I was offended and moved on. I do not live in the area so no love lost! I will fast for lunch when I think of steak and shrimp or any other meal at El Vecino !!! Why three stars? because I honestly believe this is a nice place as some has indicated, however, if I am being nice about what I'm paying for,.. not been right and you don't offer to fix it and then get an attitude with me. This place needs to be updated/remodeled. Margaritas are in need of tequila. Taste like water with lime flavor. Not tasty.
