I have been going to Lash for over 30 yrs. He is an "old school" barber shop- where you can get a shave, a shampoo, & a haircut, and can occasionally share a beer. All the while- there are generally games on the TV and Lash will talk about business or sports with you. Lash is great about networking you to other local businesses & tell you what is going on in San Mateo! A great local barber! read more

Great mens barber shop. New to the bay area and I made the mistake of going to Sports Clips first off (twice!) and got horrible service (both times). However, I received great service at Lash's Place. Having someone who honestly knows how to cut mens hair is a major plus. He listened and did exactly what I wanted. Having inflicted great hardship on my hair by getting it cut at Great Clips for years (and swimming in the Bay most afternoons), I figured it was time to start treating it with some dignity. James is one of the most energetic personable people I have met in years - a real example of the 'American Entrepreneurial Spirit' that made this country great. James is always involved in any number of interesting ventures and that alone makes the haircut enjoyable. More importantly, James has a natural talent plus the necessary knowledge, experience and training to cut ALL types of hair. I know this because I have the most difficult hair imaginable to cut - very thick, full of cowlicks and with "a mind of its own". The first time James tackled my hair, I knew he knew what he was doing. He is precise, takes his time and gives the FULL quality treatment from top to bottom. He consistently gives me the best haircut I have had in my entire life. To top it all off, he is professional, polite and considerate to all his clients no matter what the age, creed or color. James does many things in his waking hours, so an advance appointment is a must - he has just increased his hours at Lash's to 3 or 4 days a week, so give him a call - you won't regret it! I tried lot of hair cut solons in USA like Great clips, super cuts.. They never were super or great. Mostly they employees and fresh faces and you will be the guinea pig for them . I was in the neighborhood and in need of a haircut, so my girlfriend was looking on Yelp for a barber and found Lash's. When we walked in I was lucky enough that Lash was free so I didn't need to make an appointment. He's super friendly and kept us entertained during the haircut, which was good. Lash was highly recommended to me 20 years ago. When he moved from 4th ave to Palm, I continued getting my hair cut by him. Great guy. Always Very helpful. He helped me when I needed a charity for my used computer and the name of very reputable dermatologist. I've been going to Lash's place for years now, and thought it time to get in the yelp swing of swings with my first review. There are two barbers in my life that I remember: Vince from Vince's Barber Shop in San Mateo, 46 years ago, and Lash. Everyone else in between is long forgotten. Lash's Place is a special place, because there, I feel special. Call me "old school", but I like the edge, the familiarity, and the little "extras". I get my choice of stylists: Lash, who knows how to make me, at my age, with my (ahem) challenged silver locks, look good, Daniel, who knows how to make my sons look cool, and Ann, who knows how make us all feel good with her welcoming smile, friendly attitude, and her special touch. We've all heard it before: "I feel like I'm at home, here". Well, this ain't your mother's Tuesday night knitting bee. I feel more at home with a cool chardonnay or a bottle of Sierra Nevada (gratis; how's that for feeling right at home?) while chatting it up with someone (Lash) who has cared about getting to know me over the years. Lash's Place is a comfortable experience. In the last year I changed barber shops and have landed there with Daniel and on one occasion in the Boss's chair, and they both do a great job for me. I have received compliments from my sons and others who admired the good looking haircuts I get at Lash's Place. Daniel is a nice young man who knows how to work the cut to the shape of a guy's head, otherwise why would others compliment me? Daniel and I have moments when we chat and also he respects the times when I prefer to relax in quiet. I don't go to a barber shop for conversation, necessarily, but when Daniel and I have them they are always interesting and they sometimes provide a few chuckles. I have been going to Lash's for almost 6 years now, and it's always a pretty nice experience from start to finish. In fact, I'd rather wait for him to return from his vacations than get a cut from anyone or anywhere else. I think I might have told him what I wanted him to do with my hair the first few times, but I stopped when I realized he does an admirable job without the kibitzing. Maybe he just knows me, or maybe he sizes me up each time I come in, but I leave the shop presentable every time. Lash's Place is a hair cuttery-barbershop like no other. I will always be grateful to Mr. Lash for fitting my brother in at the last minute and on the spur of the moment. My brother was and is recovering from brain tumor surgery and has not been able or willing to address some of his personal hygiene issues. On the spur of the moment, my brother agreed to a shampoo, haircut, and shave. The problem was that I am from out-of-town and did not know where to go. I went from barbershop to barbershop in San Mateo, but they sent us away, either because they could not do the shave or we did not have an appointment. My brother's patience was waning very quickly. Mr. Lash came to our rescue even though he did not have an opening. He just fit my brother in immediately and gave him a haircut, two shampoos, and a shave fit for a king.
