They play Cuban music that immediately gets everyone in the mood, and you can tell it's a spot people genuinely love coming back to. Heads up though: it's a small space, so it can get pretty packed. Only downside was the drink service was slow, especially with how busy it gets. We were patient because the drinks themselves were great once they arrived; well worth the wait, just budget extra time if you're in a group. My family and I recently visited Cavaña in SF on Sunday 6/21 at 5:30pm, expecting to enjoy what we understood to be a rooftop restaurant and bar. Unfortunately, our experience started off on the wrong foot before we even made it upstairs. When we arrived, the doorman, a tall, heavyset gentleman, was eating and did not acknowledge us as we approached. I politely asked if the restaurant was open, and instead of simply answering the question, he responded that it wasn't a restaurant but a rooftop bar, adding, "I don't know where you got that misconception." I found the comment unnecessarily dismissive and somewhat condescending. As an educated woman visiting with my husband and our minor daughter, I felt there were more professional ways to clarify the venue's concept. Rather than engage further, I chose to ignore the remark. He then pointed us toward the line, despite there being no one else waiting, and pressed the elevator button with an attitude that made us feel like we were inconveniencing him simply by being there. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this interaction left us feeling unwelcome before we even had the opportunity to experience the venue itself. This review comes a little late for Cavaña. Decided to stop by there for a few drinks after Carnaval and they had some Brazilian specials happening so it was great. Of course I had to try the octopus dish which was nothing to salivate about. It was soft in the middle but the texture of the skin was a but too gummy for my taste. The sauce and yucca accompaniment did assist the dish. The steak dish however was very well done. The steak was cooked just right. The sauce that came with the meat patties was also a hit. I did dip the octopus into the sauce for some extra flavor. The meat patties themselves were good with the sauce. The cheese balls were a bit underwhelming, but dipped into the sauce that came with the meat patties, they were delicious. The drinks though... ABSOLUTELY DIVINE. I never had a green michelada before and their drink has me rewiring my brain to taste all micheladas their way going forward. It was light and so perfect with the black salt. The spicy kick was definitely there as well. The pisco sours were on point. Perfect to have while looking out to the bay. The Naked & Famous was a unique flavor as well. The cocktails were very delightful to have and definitely stimulated my taste buds. The service was great at first, but then the bar was packed with Giants fans and the service did slow down a bit, but not terrible. We still managed to get 3 drinks each even with the slower service and the hostess was great at accommodating our request to be outside even with so many reservations. I thought that was a super plus. The inside of the bar is nice as well. When there aren't fans from baseball or basketball games there, this bar would be a nice place to chill out at. Greatest place I've been with the most amazing view. I haven't EVER had a single complaint about the food. It's always out of this world. Their ceviche was so good I drank the marinade after. The drinks were very well crafted. Their guacamole was made from the best picked avocados and you could tell. My partner usually doesn't like guac and I was fighting him for the first time for it. I remember eating the steak right before I was about to give birth (baby came two days later) and I almost cried from how good the chimichurri was. I honestly believe someone who passionately believes in flavor worked there from then to now. They had the best virgin drinks then as well. I will forever want to come back here any day and any time. I came with a group of friends on a weekend night for a casual start to the evening. We had booked a time a few days in advance, given that we'd come during busier hours. Once most of our party was here, we got seated at an outside seating area that was marked as reserved. The atmosphere and decor struck a great balance between welcoming and elegant. The space had earthy tones, flattering lighting, and various layouts of seating layouts. The bar itself was beautifully displayed. We ordered various drinks and some small bites. Yuka fries, ceviche clasico, carne asana tacos, al pastor tacos. The chips were solidly crisp, crunchy, and paired very well with the ceviche. The carne asana tacos with the salsa macha was juicy and perfectly done, and my favorite small bite of the night.. The Yuka fries were perfectly salted and the aioli dip was exactly what you'd want out of fries. My friends recommended the Kiwi and I found it refreshing, almost like a drink you'd have at a spa or so. I also tried the Oaxacan, which was styled like an old fashioned. Went here on a Tuesday night with a reservation, which probably was not necessary, but it definitely helped us get a table! We were looking for a rooftop view and a chill spot to catch up, and this was perfect. I got the Paloma while my friend ordered the Naked & Famous. Both were really good and not overly sweet. We also got the guac to snack on while chatting. We were sat quickly and appreciated the view of the bay from our table. Our server came by to take our drink and food order. We ordered cocktails and 3 plates. Our oysters and first round of drinks arrived. However, it took over 40 minutes for us to receive the rest of our order... When we finally got the rest of our food, we ordered a couple more cocktails. The oysters were good, but small. The al pastor tacos were delicious. But the steak was gross. It tasted gamey/not fresh and didn't have enough chimichurri sauce to hide the off-putting flavor. Such a disappointment after waiting so long. The only saving grace were our cocktails. Cavana, in my opinion, is one of the best rooftop spots in SF. Located on top of the LUMA Hotel, you get stunning views of the East Bay, the Bay Bridge, and even Oracle Park. Yes, rooftop bars in the city are pricey, but you're not just paying for the view here! The vibes, drinks, and food are all on point. I also love that they have fire pits for those chilly nights (which is... most nights, honestly). For food, I've tried the guacamole and the quesabirria tacos. Both were great, but the braised beef birria with that consommé was especially amazing. They even do a Christmas-themed menu during the holidays, which is such a fun touch. Love this spot! Was excited to try this rooftop and really liked the drink menu options! I had the opportunity to try lots of fruity drink and liked most of them! They do go heavy on the ice with some of the drinks but they all came out in different glasses, different sizes, and different flavors. It was fun tasting them all. My favorite was the watermelon and guava. I would definitely come back for the drinks. I didn't enjoy the food, and here's where it went wrong. We first got our chips and salsa. The chips are seasoned like Doritos so there's a nice flavor but the seasoning is in consistent. Some pieces were SO salty and some had no seasoning. The salsa is pretty rich as well. When our ceviche came, I ate a bite without the seafood and it tasted fishy. When I tried the actual seafood part, I knew it went bad because it had such a strong odor. We had to send it back but saw them serving it to other people. I eat a lot of seafood and I don't mind a slight fishy taste but this was definitely a food poisoning situation. After that it took a very very long time to get our last dish. Unfortunately when it finally came out, it was a disappointment. The octopus texture tasted like it had freezer burn, then was over cooked, sat too long after it was cooked because they had to make the fries. The fries were fresh but the octopus was dry, cold, hard, and chewy. I've had lots of pulpo before and this was a let down. Came here with a group of four after a Giants Friday night game and we were let up pretty quickly; there wasn't a huge line around 10pm. There is a really cool view of the baseball field and plenty of space for people to stand or sit and talk. I tried their piña colada and it was very good. My partner and friends ordered some food (quesabirria and oysters) and lovedddd it. They have a good selection of cocktails and food on their menu and everything came out relatively quickly considering how busy they were. Everyone was very pleasant and helpful. Always a fun spot to go on a weekday after a particularly gruesome day of work or whenever you have a friend visiting out of town! I've actually never made a reservation and always had pretty good luck with getting in almost immediately upon lining up downstairs. They serve quality cocktails, all their drinks are very smoothly (and highly dangerous because of how smooth they are). I always go for any of their clarified milk cocktails, I'm actually hooked on their Kiwi 19, it is so tasty and smooth! It's also always fun chatting it up with the bartenders up there, there's always a fun group working on your drinks. Small bites are pretty good here, a bit pricy and the portions aren't too large, but I'd recommend grabbing dinner somewhere nearby at Spark Social or at the Chase Center and moseying over to Cavana for some small sharable tapas and great drinks to end a good night out. read more

It's a large, beautiful rooftop lounge & restaurant on the top of the Luma Hotel. We shared the guacamole, fried chicken yucca fries & ceviche. All items were good but I probably liked the yucca fries & chicken the most. I ordered the fish tacos as an entree & it was a good sized order, almost unable to finish it because of eating the shared appetizers. This is about a block and across the canal from Oracle park and was great for watching baseball games. Cavaña is an ode to Central and South America. It mixed with flavors, culture and heritage foods and drinks from Latin America. The name Cavaña comes from two of Latin America's most iconic spirits: Agave + Caña = Cavaña. Mixing the complexity of mezcal and tequila to rum and cachaça, Cavaña brings the flavor of Latin America to the urban San Francisco. Guayaba $19 Husband ordered this cocktail mixed with Real Del Valle tequila reposado, guava, rose petals, vanilla, mommenpop aperitif, and lime. Served in crushed ice and the smell of rose petals was phenomenal. Sandia $19 I ordered the Sandia with the lost explorer tequila blanco, Mexican cucumber gin, aloe, watermelon, hibiscus gum, lime, and serrano. The spice was stronger than the other drink, with a hint of freshness from the fresh watermelon. Yuca Fries $12 We ordered the fries made from Cassava root, and on the side with rocoto aioli. TLDR: This is an amazing spot for any occasion with a beautiful rooftop view. While the food and drinks were delicious, it felt like people were really there more for the views and ambiance. There is an expensive valet or difficult to find street parking. If you're trying to impress and have some good vibes regardless of price, this is the spot to do it. They are mostly snack bites rather than full meals, but I'd say if you have an average sized appetite you could get away with eating their dishes. Be aware that their menu changes quite frequently, so some of the items in the images you see here may not actually be there. There is also only one page of food, so it's mostly a bar/cocktail scene. The food and drinks came out pretty fast, which was nice. A giants game just finished so there was a line to get in but it went by quick. It's really pretty inside! Modern and fun. I had the Ahi Tuna tostada that was VERY pricy but it had a ton of flavor and the amount of fish was very generous. The molcajete salsa and chips was bomb. It's not super shareable and the servings are pretty small. You're going to drop a lot of cash here if you come on an empty stomach. I really liked their Sandia drink. It was flavorful and made with fresh ingredients with decent quality alcohol. The amount of actually good tequilas and mezcals they had was impressive. I suggest doing your research than paying for their flights. Anyway, during the holiday they decorate really cute and have a fun photobooth outside by the elevator that's around $6 for a cute little spot to make memories. PS... Chips are NOT gluten-free because of cross contamination BUT the tacos are because they are grilled and not fried. PRO TIP!!! If you want a place to have a seat, MAKE A RESERVATION! They have a live salsa band that plays from 5pm to 8pm on Sundays and the rooftop views while you are cutting a rug and drinking a modelo are amazing. You can see the ball park and the bay bridge so clearly. I can only imagine how it would look like during a giants game. The service was great those trendy ladies that work there are the sweetest. We had the chicken Cesar salad and the chicken skewers. Those chicken skewers were so good I almost ate the Woden sticks. I was impressed by everything there. They even have a cool elevator that takes you right to the 17th floor roof. It really caters to everyone. If you want to party here loud music and dance head to the west side of the restaurant if you want a quiet chill spot overlooking the bridge and the ballpark you head can head to the east side of the restaurant and there are 2 bars to choose from. We went to their Nochebuena pop up and it was super cute! The Christmas decorations are definitely something you should check out. They have a Photo Booth when you step out of the elevator to your left. It does get pretty busy later in the night so I recommend going in there as early as possible. Walk-ins are usually available, but you might not get a table, so I highly recommend reservations to properly enjoy the experience, especially on a weekend. On Friday and Saturday nights, the music is louder and it can get quite packed. The cocktails are fantastic. All are $19. My favorites (in descending order) include: KIWI - mezcal espadin, singani, kiwi fresca, hoja santa, lime, milk clarified, served on a large clear rock in a thin glass. Crisp, spirit forward, but refreshing. The clarification allows the acidity to shine without any tart or sour notes, resulting in a very smooth, well balanced cocktail. My favorite by far. TAMARINDO - venezuelan rum, clarified tamarind, seville orange apéritif, amaro. Spirit-forward and bittersweet but balanced BANANO - venezuelan rum, banana milk, px sherry, coffee liqueur, cold brew float. Served with crushed ice in tall glass. Delicious and creamy, good as a closing drink. ELOTE - roasted corn infused reposado tequila, red vermouth, oaxacan pasilla chile liqueur. Drinks like a tequila manhattan with a kick. Strong and spirit forward. OAXACAN OLD FASHIONED - reposado tequila, mezcal espadín, ancho demerara, mole bitters, flamed orange. Pretty standard mezcal/tequila split old fashioned, but well executed and reliable. The food is also solid, although a bit pricey for what you get.
