Last Sunday, I had one of the best summer nights in San Francisco! We came to Cavana for dinner, but we had no idea there was live salsa music and dancing happening on one of the patios. The vibe was incredible, a live salsa band, everyone dancing, people having a good time... we definitely came on the perfect night! The band played until around 8 PM, which worked out perfectly because our dinner reservation was at 8:15. After dancing and enjoying the music, we got to watch one of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen from this rooftop. Such a beautiful way to start the evening. And the food made the experience even better! The menu is mostly small bites, so we ordered several dishes to share. We started with the classic ceviche, which was fresh, citrusy, and so good with the chips. We also had the al pastor tacos with pineapple, flavorful and a classic combination that worked perfectly. But the arepitas... OMG! Definitely my favorite. They come with three little arepas filled with shredded beef, and they were SO good. Between all the dishes, it was actually plenty of food for two people, and we left very satisfied. For drinks, we tried the guava and passion fruit mocktails, and both were refreshing and had really nice flavor. I've been to Cavana before, and I already thought it was a great place to stop for drinks or food before a concert at Chase Center or a Giants game. But this Sunday experience made me love it even more. It's also such a nice spot for a date night or just hanging out with friends. This review comes a little late for Cavaña. Decided to stop by there for a few drinks after Carnaval and they had some Brazilian specials happening so it was great. Of course I had to try the octopus dish which was nothing to salivate about. It was soft in the middle but the texture of the skin was a but too gummy for my taste. The sauce and yucca accompaniment did assist the dish. The steak dish however was very well done. The steak was cooked just right. The sauce that came with the meat patties was also a hit. I did dip the octopus into the sauce for some extra flavor. The meat patties themselves were good with the sauce. The cheese balls were a bit underwhelming, but dipped into the sauce that came with the meat patties, they were delicious. The drinks though... ABSOLUTELY DIVINE. I never had a green michelada before and their drink has me rewiring my brain to taste all micheladas their way going forward. It was light and so perfect with the black salt. The spicy kick was definitely there as well. The pisco sours were on point. Perfect to have while looking out to the bay. The Naked & Famous was a unique flavor as well. The cocktails were very delightful to have and definitely stimulated my taste buds. The service was great at first, but then the bar was packed with Giants fans and the service did slow down a bit, but not terrible. We still managed to get 3 drinks each even with the slower service and the hostess was great at accommodating our request to be outside even with so many reservations. I thought that was a super plus. The inside of the bar is nice as well. When there aren't fans from baseball or basketball games there, this bar would be a nice place to chill out at. Greatest place I've been with the most amazing view. I haven't EVER had a single complaint about the food. It's always out of this world. Their ceviche was so good I drank the marinade after. The drinks were very well crafted. Their guacamole was made from the best picked avocados and you could tell. My partner usually doesn't like guac and I was fighting him for the first time for it. I remember eating the steak right before I was about to give birth (baby came two days later) and I almost cried from how good the chimichurri was. Cavana, in my opinion, is one of the best rooftop spots in SF. Located on top of the LUMA Hotel, you get stunning views of the East Bay, the Bay Bridge, and even Oracle Park. Yes, rooftop bars in the city are pricey, but you're not just paying for the view here! The vibes, drinks, and food are all on point. I also love that they have fire pits for those chilly nights (which is... most nights, honestly). For food, I've tried the guacamole and the quesabirria tacos. Always a fun spot to go on a weekday after a particularly gruesome day of work or whenever you have a friend visiting out of town! I've actually never made a reservation and always had pretty good luck with getting in almost immediately upon lining up downstairs. They serve quality cocktails, all their drinks are very smoothly (and highly dangerous because of how smooth they are). I always go for any of their clarified milk cocktails, I'm actually hooked on their Kiwi 19, it is so tasty and smooth! It's also always fun chatting it up with the bartenders up there, there's always a fun group working on your drinks. Was excited to try this rooftop and really liked the drink menu options! I had the opportunity to try lots of fruity drink and liked most of them! They do go heavy on the ice with some of the drinks but they all came out in different glasses, different sizes, and different flavors. It was fun tasting them all. My favorite was the watermelon and guava. I would definitely come back for the drinks. I didn't enjoy the food, and here's where it went wrong. We first got our chips and salsa. The chips are seasoned like Doritos so there's a nice flavor but the seasoning is in consistent. Some pieces were SO salty and some had no seasoning. The salsa is pretty rich as well. When our ceviche came, I ate a bite without the seafood and it tasted fishy. When I tried the actual seafood part, I knew it went bad because it had such a strong odor. We had to send it back but saw them serving it to other people. I eat a lot of seafood and I don't mind a slight fishy taste but this was definitely a food poisoning situation. After that it took a very very long time to get our last dish. Unfortunately when it finally came out, it was a disappointment. The octopus texture tasted like it had freezer burn, then was over cooked, sat too long after it was cooked because they had to make the fries. The fries were fresh but the octopus was dry, cold, hard, and chewy. I've had lots of pulpo before and this was a let down. It's a large, beautiful rooftop lounge & restaurant on the top of the Luma Hotel. We shared the guacamole, fried chicken yucca fries & ceviche. All items were good but I probably liked the yucca fries & chicken the most. I ordered the fish tacos as an entree & it was a good sized order, almost unable to finish it because of eating the shared appetizers. After having this place on my list for months, I finally decided to take advantage of the rare hot San Francisco day and check out Cavaña. We went on a Thursday evening right before sunset. We were sat quickly and appreciated the view of the bay from our table. Our server came by to take our drink and food order. We ordered cocktails and 3 plates. Our oysters and first round of drinks arrived. However, it took over 40 minutes for us to receive the rest of our order... When we finally got the rest of our food, we ordered a couple more cocktails. The oysters were good, but small. The al pastor tacos were delicious. But the steak was gross. It tasted gamey/not fresh and didn't have enough chimichurri sauce to hide the off-putting flavor. Such a disappointment after waiting so long. The only saving grace were our cocktails. This is about a block and across the canal from Oracle park and was great for watching baseball games. Cavaña is an ode to Central and South America. It mixed with flavors, culture and heritage foods and drinks from Latin America. The name Cavaña comes from two of Latin America's most iconic spirits: Agave + Caña = Cavaña. Mixing the complexity of mezcal and tequila to rum and cachaça, Cavaña brings the flavor of Latin America to the urban San Francisco. Guayaba $19 Husband ordered this cocktail mixed with Real Del Valle tequila reposado, guava, rose petals, vanilla, mommenpop aperitif, and lime. Served in crushed ice and the smell of rose petals was phenomenal. Sandia $19 I ordered the Sandia with the lost explorer tequila blanco, Mexican cucumber gin, aloe, watermelon, hibiscus gum, lime, and serrano. The spice was stronger than the other drink, with a hint of freshness from the fresh watermelon. Yuca Fries $12 We ordered the fries made from Cassava root, and on the side with rocoto aioli. Baja Fish Tacos $22 We got the fish tacos with Negra modelo battered cod, cabbage, cilantro, onions, and aji panaca. Three pieces per order which was a good portion for 2 adults. My family and I recently visited Cavaña in SF on Sunday 6/21 at 5:30pm, expecting to enjoy what we understood to be a rooftop restaurant and bar. Unfortunately, our experience started off on the wrong foot before we even made it upstairs. When we arrived, the doorman, a tall, heavyset gentleman, was eating and did not acknowledge us as we approached. I politely asked if the restaurant was open, and instead of simply answering the question, he responded that it wasn't a restaurant but a rooftop bar, adding, "I don't know where you got that misconception." I found the comment unnecessarily dismissive and somewhat condescending. As an educated woman visiting with my husband and our minor daughter, I felt there were more professional ways to clarify the venue's concept. Rather than engage further, I chose to ignore the remark. He then pointed us toward the line, despite there being no one else waiting, and pressed the elevator button with an attitude that made us feel like we were inconveniencing him simply by being there. First impressions matter, and unfortunately this interaction left us feeling unwelcome before we even had the opportunity to experience the venue itself. Hospitality begins at the door, and I hope management provides additional customer service training to ensure future guests are greeted with courtesy and respect. read more

TLDR: This is an amazing spot for any occasion with a beautiful rooftop view. While the food and drinks were delicious, it felt like people were really there more for the views and ambiance.
