It was our daughter's birthday and we chose to indulge in the wonderful flavors of Mexican food. We arrived at 7:30 and many diners had completed their meal and were leaving with to go boxes in hand. That indicated to me plentiful portion sizes- a plus. The entry was clean, well decorated, and well staffed. It was too small to handle all the leaving, arriving, and pickup traffic but there was seating inside and out. At any rate, our wait was short. We were shown to a comfortable table, promptly greeted, and provided with a basket of hearty corn chips and a great salsa- just a little spicy but also mild enough for my husband's tender palate. Angel was our server and she was great: attentive, pleasant, and informative. We ordered two appetizers:,mofongo and chichirrones. Both were great. The avocado sauce accompanying the mofongo was very flavorful, bright and tangy. The pork was well seasoned and had crispy and tender bits without and excess fat. It was just right. My daughter ordered the reine (white flaky fish with yellow rice and black beans), my husband had beef quesadillas with rice, and I had the chicken and shrimp Monterey. The fish was new to us all and was very good- like hake or cod. I don't know how mine tasted- I ate too much of the appetizers to have any room. But two of the 7 (!) to go boxes were just mine and we will ALL dine well tonight, too. An added bonus, while there, I learned that they made Sancocho (a delicious soup/stew/heaven in a bowl) on Saturdays. This is one of our go-to spots, and it did not disappoint for a very special occasion. We celebrated my parents' 50th wedding anniversary here, and the team at Latino's y Mas went above and beyond to accommodate our party on the outdoor patio. We were even able to have mariachis, which made the celebration extra special. For a group of 35, everything ran incredibly smoothly--we had two assigned servers, and the service was fantastic from start to finish. I was very excited to eat here but got very disappointed. The place looks fancy but it's not fancy. The establishment tries to be fancy with appearance and price but it truly isn't. 1st red flag started with the fancy ipad menu, but three our of 6 didn't work, they were dirty and one cracked. 2nd. Our waiter was nice and friendly but forgot our water the first time and wasn't that attentive 3rd. The food was okay but not worth the price. The rice tasted as if it were leftovers and you can taste it as if it came from a microwave. 4th. Cheaply made cocktails. An old fashion with Walmart cherries, simple syrup and poor mixture. The quality of a restaurant to be considered involves more than just food. Many factors dictate whether or not the experience is enjoyable to the point of a return trip. Cleanliness, pleasantries, parking, etc, they all matter. Maybe it's unfair but, it matters. We visited Latinos Y Mas last night and I had a gut feeling that things were going to be alright. You know that owners and operators of an establishment care about what they are trying to do by the presentation of the staff. All had their uniforms on and were groomed and presentable and pleasant. Ok, we were there a bit early (5:30p) on a Saturday night (before the crowd) and so, I'm sure we got them before things got hectic. Had a table in 5 minutes, sat down and within a minute were chips and salsa on the table. Pleasant server took our drink order as we perused the menu (iPads mind you. No paper). The drinks looked and tasted great. A couple of mojitos and they didn't shy away from the booze! We had the carne asada and another steak dish with onions the name of which escapes me. Both tender and delicious. The wait staff was very attentive. Let me put it this way, I removed the paper wrapper from my straw that came with my water with lemon and balled it up and within about a minute our server came by and took the balled up paper from the table! Good thing for my wife as, I was just about to "field goal" flick that paper at her! Lol Very pleasant experience and good food. As we left, we saw the line of people waiting outside. After reading several reviews we were a bit skeptical of giving this place a try. This restaurant was profiled in a magazine of great places to eat while in Ocala-couldn't be that bad right? We decided to try it out for lunch last Monday. First- the parking lot is very clean and lot of spaces. Once inside we were greeted by smiling welcoming faces and seated immediately. The menu is on an iPad type of device - no biggie. Our server took our order immediately and then brought us chips and salsa which were good. My husband ordered the Bandeja Paisa and I ordered the chicken breast fried (pollo empanizado). After living in south Florida for 50 years we are very familiar with this type of cuisine and I will tell you this restaurant held up nicely in comparison. Both of our dishes were fresh and delish. This is among my favorite Ocala restaurants and I have positively reviewed it in the past. Today, I must say I was disappointed. The first basket of chips were inedible, hard and rubbery and soaked with oil. The small bowl of salsa was way too small for the basket of chips. We did ask, and it was replaced, ironically when we started to ask for the replacement, the server seemed unsurprised and said something to make me think we weren't the first table to ask to have them replaced. I ordered a special, Mero la Plancha, described as, and I have had it several times, " topped with a lemon butter sauce" well, they forgot that part. There was a lemon wedge, there obviously had been some lemon sauce in the preparation, but there was no sauce over or under the fish! It was dry and the sauce would have helped! No, I didn't call notice to it, the point of the lunch was to see friends, catch up and enjoy the company. One of my friends for beef burritos, very big and very nicely presented, but dry and unseasoned. The bills were wrong, the house wine was $10+ , the service was good until the end when we waited forever for our checks. Just disappointed. But one out of several.... I'll go back! read more

We were traveling through the area and found this place on Yelp. It sounded promising and we were pleasantly surprised with our experience. When we stopped in around 1:30 pm the restaurant was busy with a diverse local crowd. We were seated promptly and our server greeted us quickly. We looked over the extensive menu and made our selections. It was a little bit of a wait for our server to return. My husband ordered a Cuban Sandwich with black bean soup and I ordered the Mexican ceviche. The ceviche was wonderful. My husband really liked the black bean soup. The sandwich was good but was missing yellow mustard - in our opinion a necessary part of the Cuban sandwich. LOL We would definitely return as the food everyone around us ordered looked fantastic and they all seemed to enjoy it. After receiving our food. We never saw our server again. We ended up having the hostess get our check and we paid her. I think the service there is pretty good as all the other tables had very attentive servers. Let me preface this by saying we are not new to Latinos Y Mas. We have frequented the place many times over many years, but tonight's experience compelled me to write this review. We arrived late in the evening - 8:15pm or so, and were seated promptly, as the place was pretty empty, and quiet. The waiter took our drink order and delivered them as well as an appetizer we ordered (queso dip). All was good up to this point. The waiter took our order and left and came back with a refill, which was great. Once the food was delivered, however things took a turn. All 3 of us ordered plantains with our meals and while they are normally great, they were all burnt. Normally you get 3 plantains, there were only 2 per plate. When asked, the waiter said there were no more to replace them with. If i were running the kitchen i would never have sent them out, i would have told the waiter to tell us they ran out. We all ordered the yellow rice, but that too must have been scraping the bottom of the barrel. It was hard and not at all edible. When the waiter was told, he brought out the last of the Mexican rice which was about as hard and as inedible. My wife ordered the Mero a la plancha, and my son and I ordered the carne asada. The mero was not very good, and as we learned later, actually not good at all as my wife was forced to take charcoal for food poisoning. My steak was good, my son's was really almost a shaved steak it was so thin. The service was great until the end when they charged us full price for what wasn't even half an edible meal. If this were my only interaction with the restaurant, I definitely would never go back. As it stands, I feel ripped off, and not happy about our visit at all. read more

Friday Night dinner out: Latinos Y Mas. Acting on the recommendation of a friend, we decided to try a new place (to us). A very nice, clean place with helpful staff. Jonathan, our server, did a good job taking care of us. A giant burrito (grilled chicken), a chimichanga (chicken), chicken quesadillas, and mediterranean salmon made up our dishes. Very good flavors in all, and the salsa served with the chips definitely has cilantro in it (one of us tastes soap). The strawberry Margarita (well, both of them) appeared to be very good judging from the smile on my wife's face. We were in the area for a celebration of life and the family had food brought in. We had the arroz con pollo and the sweet plantains. I had never tried either item and I was quite shocked. It was full of flavor and I found myself going back for seconds. I can't wait to find some good plantains in Indiana. The party also included black beans and quesadillas which were well liked, but I wasn't able to sample either. I love that they have their menu labeled for gluten free. Hello Yelpers! The wifey and I went here on a date night dinner excursion. This is a Latin fusion eatery whose menus are on iPads. I have been told this place and it food was good. We arrived and were promptly seated. Our waitress greeted us and took our drink and appetizer order. Drinks came out quickly and we placed our order. My wife order the breaded chicken breast with a salad and yellow rice. I order the Chicken Marsala with sweet plantains and yellow rice. The chips and salsa were ok. My wife's salad came out and it was not looking happy. Usually my wife will finish her salad but this one she just picked at it. Then our order came out mine was correct but my wife's order was not even close and had to send it back. Her order came out as I was finishing mine. My order was lacking flavor that I had to add salt and pepper for some flavor and the rice portions were skimpy. Our check came without the book they usually put them in. They do offer to put your drink in a Togo cup. I am giving 3 stars as it was not the worse food we've had, it just did not invoke any emotion. I have been visiting this place for the last 10+ years every time I visit Ocala. The only time I don't eat there is when it is closed. This is a Mexican fusion restaurant and they have surely mastered their recipes. From their chimichanga, arroz con pollo, quesadillas, chicken a la plancha and camarones. Everything is delicious. No wonder there is always a line outside the door. This time I went on Thanksgiving eve and my sister and I shared the arroz con pollo which was accompanied by black beans and a salad. The portion size was large enough for us to share and still have left overs and even though we ordered to go it did not disappoint. The service was impeccable, as usual and my food was ready on time and they were prompt in getting me in and out to enjoy my meal. This would have been acceptable had they were replenished (as had been on our first visit). * After (5-7?) minutes of having an empty water glass, we finally gave up and went in search of a person who could provide a refill. (SHE, and other servers were nicely attentive as I stood there). * All this, while our server - Angel - could be seen near the servers station, leaning against the wall.
