For my entree, I got the short rib mole. Holy smokes it was outstanding. The beef just fell off the rib, and the mole had a very deep and complex spiced flavor. On a childhood stroll to my older stomping grounds I passed the Eureka Valley Public Library I frequent in my formative years there is another entrance for Dinosaur Sandwiches on 16th street. Inside it feels like you stepped into a miniature dinosaur museum and sandwich shop. The decor has a theme of the prehistoric times with lots of dinosaur figures like some in SF. They have hella types of Banh Mi in the menu and I ordered The Special which had pork pate and slow roasted pork on French baguette with pickled carrots. The baguette was fresh but a little flakey like some in SF. Overall it was tasty and savory. They also have spicy Tuna Banh Mi along with Crispy Tofu and Beef Kare-Kare Banh Mi . They also have salty chips along with some shrimp chips. You can wash it all down with Vietnamese beer like Bia Saigon and 333 Premium Export Beer. It filled up quick though! We started off with the Koko Wings (5/5), which were DELICIOUS, I had my doubts since I was worried it was overhyped but they were so crispy and flavorful. The flavoring on the outside was a mix of spicy, sweet and slight curry taste, there was even some numbness like from Szechuan peppercorns. A really unique treat! The vinegar based sauce it was served with was also delicious and we ended up eating it with everything. The second dish we had was a tremendous letdown! We were excited to try the Chicken Kelaguen (1/5) because it looked delicious with shredded coconut on top but when we tasted it we were all thrown first by how cold it was and second how bitter it was! The chicken was shredded and had notes of bitterness from bbq char, but there was also a very strong taste of lemon rind that made the whole dish bitter and hard to eat. This was a bit of a shock after the Koko wings, but maybe the flavor is an acquired taste? The Coconut Titiyas (3/5) are very similar to a green onion pancake to us and was a nice breadlike side, but I think we were expecting some coconut flavor. There was no coconut taste at all! Tinaktak (4/5) Sooo comforting and delicious!! The noodles were the right amount of bounce and I enjoyed the coconut milk based sauce. I loved the mushrooms and cherry tomatoes in the dish. There was more sauce than noodles though so we ended up with a lot of extra goodness in the bowl we just scraped up. The Banana Donuts (5/5) were FIRE - not too sweet, hot and filled w banana I could've eaten the whole plate! I love how it was served w whipped cream as well. Overall, prices are high for portion sizes, but I think being able to try Guamian cuisine is a real selling point and justifies a special night out! I would definitely be back for the Koko wings and banana donuts, but would need to try other items on the menu.
