This was one of the best meals I ever had. It was insane. Before I go off on how amazing the food was, let me first say that the service is wonderful. The owners are so welcoming and approachable, and share so much information about the food. The ambiance is also impeccable. The custom made plates and cups are beautiful, and music is sooo good: it reminded me a lot of the lowrider oldies I heard growing up in Southern California. But the food is above and beyond. Everything I had was the best version I have ever had. The fresh oysters with the Vietnamese crack sauce was wild. The mignonette was incredibly flavorful, yet the oyster still came through. Best oyster preparation I've ever had. The blue corn masa mochi with caviar and lime zest cultured butter was a revelation. The masa and mochi cake was perfectly gooey, rich, and had a wonderful crust. When paired with the lime zest butter and caviar, each bite was wonderfully creamy and savory, with just a hint of acidity from the lime zest. Each bite was so good I found myself inadvertently closing my eyes and muttering about how good it was. The Baja fish taco is well known and purportedly the best in the city. It was definitely the best fish taco I've ever had. The fish is lightly breaded and perfectly crunchy. The shredded cabbage, salsa, and freshly made blue corn tortilla it was paired with made for an amazing bite. And the consommé it was served with was deeply flavorful, savory, and had a nice tangy flavor from the lime. Finally we added the squid ink tamal with 13 hour cherry braised lengua, Gouda, and pickled onions. Oh my god. Everything about it was amazing: the masa was rich and creamy, the lengua was tender, and when they all came together in a bite it was incredible. In summary, eating here was amazing. I am sure that they are in their way to a Michelin star (or two, or three), so I would recommend coming here asap. read more

This Chicáno - Mexican restaurant is located in the back of The Broken Record bar in San Francisco's Excelsior district. You absolutely need to stop by for these insanely delicious Ensenada style Baja fish tacos with salmon consome, squid ink infused tamales filled with shredded beef, and wu-tang flan! For a filling and delicious fish taco meal. You can't go wrong at CHICANO NUEVO. I haven't explored a lot more of the menu because I can't get past the San Diego style fish tacos. I also love the salsa and the bit of seafood consommé that comes with it. Sometime this fall they are moving from the Excelsior to a Mission Street location where the old Emmys Spaghetti shack was across from Safeway. I can't wait to see what they do with the new place - I loved their art at Broken Record. In any event, we'll follow them wherever they go - it's that good! read more

I was excited to give this place a shot given the reviews and buzz but it really fell flat for me. Agree with the other reviewers not riding the hype train. Portions are small, prices are high, food is good but at these prices, there really isn't anything to make me even want to consider it another time. Place is way too pricey for what you could get elsewhere and in much better digs with full service worth tipping. Prices are already on the high side, + 20% charge explicitly stated is not a tip, It's awkward you have to pay separately for drinks and food, it's basically food court style where they bring food to you and follows this annoying SF trend that asks for tip before service. To wrap it all up, the food was good but I can easily get something as good or better for less $$$ read more

I stumbled upon Abraham's pop up one random Friday I ended up at El Rio. As a girl who doesn't really drink, ya end up being the starving designated driver. Cue Chicano Nuevo - OMG you saved my night. I waited and watched him set up. He had Thai Red Snapper for baja fish tacos. The fish was fresh fried to perfection. Crunchy on the outside, still flaky and meaty on the inside. A nice helping of some pickled veggies and a small squeeze of lime to cut the acid. Very nice and light, not super heavy. The potato rolled taquitos were on point too! The only thing I wish was for spicier sauce :) I just love hot sauce.. But other than that, if you're hangry at El Rio and Abraham is around, it's well worth the money to buy his food! read more

Just absolutely, incredibly the best fish tacos in town. Each piece of fish is so juicy, fresh, and fried to perfection. The portions are generous, and each order comes with the richest seafood consomme. Actually, anything fried here is a little piece of perfection. The owner is super friendly and warm too. Chicano Nuevo just opened to the public (28 Oct) and wow, it is phenomenal. This is Mexican in the style of SoCal, with touches of Tijuana and assorted environs. Chef Abraham does a tremendous job melding flavors to where the food feels homemade but still contemporary. They're just starting out and the menu is small, but from my one experience I can't recommend it enough. The Space: This is in the old Emmy's Spaghetti Shack, in back of (and connected to) El Amigo bar. It's dimly lit, bare yet cozy, with Christmas lights in the windows. Music is Mexican covers of Top 40 - songs like "Air Force One" and "Champagne Supernova" made appearances. It's eclectic, but it definitely works. The Drinks: They come from El Amigo, and they're solid. We enjoyed the paloma, and an (off-menu) spicy margarita done with habanero bitters. The Food: I mean, this is why you're here right? Queso Fundido, Fish Tacos with a salmon consomme, cubano sandwich, three cheese tamales. All are fantastic, but we were most impressed with the last two... Three Cheese Tamales: These are done with a chile masa that gives them a slightly more adventurous flavor than the bland ones you can buy on many Mission street corners. They're simple, sure, but they're done right! And I will not judge you for ordering a second plate. The Cubano: This is like the idealized version of a cubano. Like, imagine the perfect version of your favorite food that maybe you had once, but really it doesn't exist anywhere but inside your brain. This is THAT cubano. The pork, the pickles, the subtle but tangy mustard, the perfectly toasted roll, it all works together to make for a perfect sandwich. 10 out of 10. Wow. read more

I'm from Southern California and miss the Mexican food down there. Bay Area comida just doesn't cut it sometimes. But Chicano Nuevo takes me back there. Abraham the owner grew up in Tijuana and San Diego so he knows how to make Mexican food the way I like it. The fish tacos and the guacamole are my favorite but the chicken and potato taquitos (called rolled tacos or flautas here) are also top notch. I don't eat pork or beef but my wife enjoyed the carnitas. The selection isn't extensive because it's a popup but they cover the basics: chicken, fish, beef, pork, and vegetarian. I will say this for Chicano Nuevo: The food is delicious and the service was friendly. Here is why we will not be back though: The first reviewer, Zach M, hit on one of things that disappointed me about this place; it is called Chicano Nuevo. I am Chicana. I thought I would feel at home here. Unfortunately, I don´t think my family and I, who have lived in the neighborhood almost 20 years, are the type of clientele this restaurant is trying to attract. I think they want people who do not mind dropping seven dollars for a very small (although delicious) tamale, just because they are not like , and I quote from the first review, ¨the bland ones you can buy on many Mission street corners.¨ In other words, some people do not know their nalgas from a hole in the ground when it comes to tamales, because the ones on the Mission street corners are the real deal and do not leave you hungry after you spent 14 dollars. In other other words, the prices at this place are just too damn high for the amount of food you get. I spent 60 dollars with tax and tip. Here is what we got: Four potato filled taquitos. These were quite good. Two small tri-tip tacos. Also, very good. Two small fish tacos with a yummy caldo on the side. Two small tamales. Very tasty. Spicy. One beer. If I spend 20.00 a person at a neighborhood spot, I do not expect to leave hungry. I will buy my tamales from the street corners and have 50 left to spare. It also took a really long time to get our food - we were the only table and it was about 30 minutes to get our first three plates. I could see that the cook was working alone, so hopefully they will work the timing out after a while. tl;dr: I am sure that this place will be popular and will do well. I really wanted to like it. But, like much of San Francisco these days, it doesn´t seem to be made for folks like me - we don´t have that kind of feria. read more

Had a great experience tonight at Chicano Nuevo. It was quiet because of the holiday's, but despite we had excellent food in welcoming atmosphere. Abraham (chef) guided us through the simple yet amazing menu of food and drinks. We had three items split between the two of us. It was a perfect amount given we were a little hungry. One dish each would be good if you are not hungry. We had the Beef tacos, Fish tacos, and Three Cheese Tamales. All were outstanding! The Fish Tacos with the salmon consomme was delicious. My boyfriend and I heard about Chicano Nuevo opening and came here last night for the first time. Everything was amazing and exceeded my expectations. My boyfriend lived in San Diego for 5 years and said this is the real deal when it comes to Tijuana street food. We had the potato rolled tacos, the tamales, the fish tacos, and the queso. The tamales were probably my favorite if I had to choose but everything we had was fantastic in quality and taste. They also had tasty margaritas and Saint Archer beer from San Diego. We loved the friendly atmosphere and the fact that they are open late so we didn't feel rushed to get out the door even though it was 10pm on a Tuesday night. Vegetarian options did NOT disappoint! My husband and I stumbled upon this hidden gem while on our way to the Knockout! We were extremely pleased with our meal. We LOVE potato tacos, and they do a rolled taquito version. Yummers! We each had our own order of them. Queso fundido was quite delicious also. That is served with warm corn tortillas and garlicky salsa! I had to stop myself from drinking the salsa. Very flavorful! Drinks from the bar we're typical. Our server Veronica was very sweet. We even had a chance to meet the chef. He was very nice and appreciative of our business. They assured us more items will be added and there will always be vegetarian options! A lot of the vibe of this place needs work. The music in the kitchen vs. the music in the dining room clashed. They played a Hall and Oates Live album, this would kill a Thomas Keller restaurant vibe. Food was good. But not mind blowing, I am local, I was born in SF, I spent the first month of my life in Bernal and I want to love this place. You didn't make me love this place. I was actually kind of thinking, no bueno. Service was OK. Menu was limited and for the area, pricey, then again, this is the new Bernal/edge of Mission. The drink scene is also a mess, you have to get cocktails next door or get beer/wine from the restaurant itself. Is this place food for the bar or a restaurant with a crap license. Alright, the chef, Abraham, is straight up a badass and I give him so much respect. He's using great ingredients to bring good food to the table. The queso fundido was hot and gooey, a nice way to start the meal. I loved the cubano sandwich--it's hard to find a good cubano around here! The drinks are from the bar next door and they're pretty good, a lot of tequila/mezcal based drinks. I really hope this place grows, and with it the menu! Let me put it to you all this way. This is my 1st yelp review. In fact I set up a Yelp Account to write a review for this place. To me, it was that good. Outside of Mexico this place has some of the best Mexican dishes I've had in the states. The ambiance... I told my family it feels like I'm in Mexico. They agreed. Yes they have a small menu, but with that you have a chef who is dedicated to making this small selection as best as possible. To start off the Queso Fundido was fantastic, Oaxaca Cheese it does not get any better. Then the potato taquitos flauta style were great. After that came the 3 Cheese tamales the masa was not greasy and not dry, it was perfect we ordered another serving. Chicano Tacos (my favorite) best tacos Ive had in the states. The Fish tacos were spot on which came with a side of salmon/dried shrimp consomme. The Prices are high if you compare them to a taqueria which this is not.
