I had about 3 weeks to pull together a last minute January company holiday party. I was given an OK budget to work with, about $100 per person, F&B. I reached out to several Bay Area caterers who laughed me off instead of even attempting to work with me. Not Mike and Sunset29 though. I reached out with a tentative menu, he gave me a follow up call right away, and immediately I knew I was working with a great company. We discussed logistics, he sent the proposal, I sent a deposit, and got to feel at ease until party time. Day of the party arrives and Mike and his crew are prompt and communicative while I'm running around trying to get everything else in order. The party was held at a house on a steep hill with a winding staircase, but the crew lugged everything up just fine. Mike even brought chafing dishes so that the food could be elevated and nicely presented to guests. It worked out perfectly. I wish I had taken a proper photo but we had to keep the food covered and warm for a little while before serving. By the time we did, everyone descended upon it. The food was AMAZING!!! We had tri-tip, chicken, pulled pork, mac and cheese, beans, their famous mushrooms, Hawaiian rolls, and two generous garden salads. The portions for 25 were more than enough, but the party ended up being at least 40+ people cycling through as it turned into a bash. Still, we were all able to chow down with plenty for everyone. Once a tray was emptied, leaving guests filled them up with leftovers. Sunset29 left a few business cards next to the food and I eventually ran out of them. If there was one more star for purchase, I'd spend the money. A guy named Mike was at Golden Gate Park today, for an event called Old Cars Picnic. I showed up with my daughter who was meeting up with her friend, where this guy Mike was wearing a Sunset 29 shirt, but LOOKING like a SF Giants shirt.....he's working like a work-horse over the hot BBQ grill, and THEN, just as my stomach finishes a growl and I shoot out a prayer that someone has some snacks....he starts walking around with this PRIMO grade beef, sliced and hot, handing them to absolutely everyone within 20 feet of him. He didn't even ask if I was part of his friends party....just walked over and fed me, repeatedly. and not a hot dog. Ordered 2 racks of ribs and a pound of brisket for a family gathering. The owner was kind enough to throw in some potato salad and rolls. The ribs were great with good smoke. The potato salad was a total surprise. I'd buy it by the gallon! Star of the show was the brisket. Perfecting his special seasonings, his trial crowds became once a month crowds and now catering to special events! What makes his BBQ so delicious it that it's all about perfecting the flavors and textures. It's MEAT WITH FLAVOR AND NOT FLAVOR WITH MEAT. Everything is always soooo juicy and flavorful. Working with Mike was so easy! We needed to cater an event in Golden Gate Park for 115 people. We scheduled a call where he understood our budget, numbers, schedule, and preferences. He suggested some sides to go with our mains. He worked with us to provide a fair and reasonable quote for high-quality food. Our guests LOVED the food. He cooked enough for 160, even though we paid for 115. He even threw in some smoked mushrooms on the house because he's so passionate about his food, he knew we had to try them. The mac attack was heavenly, the tri-tip and chicken were staple favorites, and he cooked up 10 veggie dogs for vegan guests. He even brought us serving utensils and drove up to our picnic tables in the park to deliver. Overall, you absolutely need to try Mike's food. My Husband and I were invited to Harmonic Brewery and they had food catered that day. Sunset 29 BBQ. They had Tri-Tip, Chicken and Rib plates or a combo plate. I had the Tri-Tip/Chicken combo and the chicken was so juicy and the rub on the Tri-Tip was so tasty. My Husband has the ribs and said they were Great. They had sides of Coleslaw, Potato salad, Mac & Cheese but the best side were the 'Shrooms!!! They were plump and flavorful. I recently went to Anchor Public Taps and Sunset29 BBQ was there. My friends and I came across Sunset 29 BBQ when we visited Bloodhound, the dog-friendly bar in SoMa. They had a section of the bar where they setup their food prep station, and after awhile, we caved into the smell of BBQ and ordered dinner from them. Plus, then menu was just sitting on the bar, taunting us. My boyfriend and I ordered the BBQ brisket plate, which came with sides of coleslaw and Hawaiian bread. SOOOOO good!! Finally found a place that offers great barbecue! I've used Sunset 29 to cater at my school two times in the past year. Each time it has been a huge hit with my co-workers. Sunset 29 delivers fresh and hot cooked barbecue. I always go with the tri tip and smoked mushrooms. The chicken and ribs are also good but, the tri tip is on a entirely different level as far as taste. The pricing varies on what you want them to cater but I would suggest tri tip with sides of mushrooms, potato salad and mac n cheese. They also include some Hawaiian bread so you can make sandwiches out of the tri tip if you so choose. I scheduled Sunset 29 to be ready to serve by 11am. He arrived promptly at 10:45 am and was carving the meat by 11am just in time for the start of our lunch break. The presentation of the food was also very well done. You can't get the same value or quality of barbecue in San Francisco or Daly City. Its definitely the best bang for your buck especially if you opt for Sunset 29 to cater your event. Sunset 29 also does pop up events so keep checking their Instagram or Facebook pages. Beer and barbecue? Yes please!! Would I recommend Sunset 29? In a heartbeat!!! Great food! Great value! I was at a party the other day and I saw some barbecue on the serving table. First thing I'd like to say is that I'm very particular about my barbecue since I've been cooking for over 35 years and I've won the Reno chili and barbecue championship twice. That being said walked on over and took a look it was to be offered on the table. My first land said this looks pretty darn good and the aroma was as good as my visual was. So I said hey. I'm really not that hungry but this stuff looks pretty good so I should probably give it a try or regret not eating it later. I grabbed the plate and serve myself up some ribs, pulled pork, sausages, potato salad, and something that was called." signature slaw.". I've been myself a nice quiet place to enjoy the food as I hate eating and be bothered by people yakking in my ear things I really don't care about. I slowly started digging in to the items on the plate and was blown away by how savory and perfectly cooked, the meats were. As I said, before I have one competitions on a high level regarding barbecue. I've also eaten some of the greatest BBQ places in the country, including Franklins in Austin and dearly every BBQ in Kansas City and Memphis. Despite being with some people may call a BBQ snob, this food was absolutely off the hook. When they said signature slaw, they weren't kidding. It was the tastiest coleslaw I've ever had my life! As for the meats, They were perfectly smoked, cooked and flavored. I later found out the Pitmasters name was Mike Marcal. He got into barbecuing with the same passion that I did when I started. He uses the finest products and doesn't over complicate the process. That is a true sign of a great BBQ pit master. I would tell anybody who sees an event that he is cooking at, not to miss it! I went home later that night dreaming of the delicious BBQ the deer prepared and hopefully on my next trip to this area, I will have the chance to enjoy his expertise and cooking again!!! One last thing is, I also found out that he supports many local causes are close to his heart in the area he lives in.
