Coming to Dr. Nygaard's office has been a much different experience than I have had with other medical visits. I was recommended by my dentist, Dr. Wilson of Sodorff & Wilson, for my gum grafting. From the moment I interacted with the receptionist and all through my initial appointment, it was very apparent to me that everyone here is both personable and opinionated. That can make one feel both uncomfortable as well as more connected and aware. So it's a good and a bad thing depending on how you look at it. If you like the customer service facade of many medical practices then this may not enjoy your experience here. Dr. Nygaard and her assistant are both very experienced and very opinionated women and they don't hold back on bringing up their critique on your health, even in areas you didn't come in to talk about. I will disclaim that while this may have been a bit more stimulating emotionally then I bargained for, it ultimately is not something I dislike; I appreciate that the medical world is in flux and filled with new research and approaches, so I find it refreshing and valuable to have real discussions with my doctors. I want to talk to my regular dentist about some of the things Dr. Nygaard recommended as far as my dental hygiene (she told me to try switching to a different toothbrush, changing my brushing technique) because I was given some ideas I have never heard before. Anyway, I think there is a wholistic health approach here, for sure. And it makes you feel like Dr. Nygaard is very very passionate about what she does and she is really thinking about you as an individual. That being said, I can see why some people have a negative experience. Most important, Dr. Nygaard is amazing at what she does. My gum graft looks so good. I was really nervous about the cosmetic aspect of it and I couldn't be happier. I would recommend coming here. I do agree that the receptionist shouldn't be bringing up irrelevant personal topics with patients and that this office should definitely address that, but it just isn't a significant enough factor for me. The receptionist was unprofessional, bringing up controversial topics for no reason. She complained about kids being asked for their pronouns and asked me if I believed in God. Then the assistant (nurse? x-ray tech?) who took pictures of my teeth was condescending and aggressive. She kept complaining that my mouth was too small and that I wasn't actually biting and that I was wiggling my head around. I don't know what to tell you--I was being as cooperative as I could. She also explained diabetes to me, a condition I've had for over five years, manage very well, and probably know more about than her. She was mad I didn't know my A1C and didn't seem to believe me when I told her that although I couldn't recall the actual number, I check regularly and have been in prediabetic range for a year. Then Dr. Nygaard came in and continued explaining diabetes to me, and while some of it was informative, it wasn't what I was there for and went on too long. She was also annoyed that I couldn't recall my A1C number. While we were talking about the operation I was considering, the rude assistant stayed in the room the whole time. When we discussed taking anti-anxiety medications during the operation to help with stress, the assistant said I would need a higher dose because of how I acted during the x-ray and Dr. Nygaard just nodded and wrote that down. At that point I felt like I wasn't even in the room. Basically, if I have to pick someone to drug me and cut into my gums, I am not going to pick these people. I'm out $150, and I might have to pay a similar amount to consult with the next periodontist, but I'd rather be somewhere people behave like professionals and where I'm 100% sure they respect patient autonomy. read more

Dr Nygaard's dental office is professional, efficient, courteous and effective. We are reminded of our appointments, and also receive calls if patients cancel to see if we would like to move our appointments up. The staff works with us if something comes up and we need to change our scheduled appointment. When we walk in the door we are greeted by name, and the receptionist immediately notifies the technicians that we have arrived. We rarely wait more than a few minutes before we are taken back for work to begin. The technical staff is knowledgable, informative, and caring. All work being performed is explained ahead of time, and we are kept informed during the procedure what is about to occur, so there are no surprises. Once all work is completed, Dr Nygaard spends extra time explaining any further home treatment that might be necessary, and discusses any possible future dental needs. Dr Nygaard is patient and understanding with us, and it is obvious her concern is our long term overall dental health. The billling and insurance staff go above and beyond to assist in helping us to understand the payments and submittals required, which is great, since the process can be quite complicated. I would highly recommend to anyone needing priority dental care. read more

The office is clean and beautiful. I was greeted warmly by the receptionist who welcomed me to the office and shook my hand, which was a nice touch. My technician, Elise, was personable and knowledgeable and Dr. Johnson was friendly and extremely competent. Unfortunately, they do not appear to be sympathetic to uninsured patients and had very few payment options. I enjoyed my visit, but I feel like I paid for the exam just to leave disappointed because I will not be able to pursue the treatment plan. read more

Had two separate gum grafts covering four teeth from Dr. Nygaard over the past two years. Gum grafts are not fun, but she made them as painless as possible (didn't need anything other than aspirin) and the results are great! My dentist recommended her and said his other patients have had similarly good results. In contrast with some other reviews, all her office staff that I've dealt with have been friendly and professional... though perhaps a bit pushy to follow the treatment plan. Gum grafts are expensive, and I was hesitating on the second one since it wasn't as clearly needed as the first. However, the second one turned out even better than the first (in part because the recession wasn't as far along), and if they hadn't been pushy I might have waited. So I suppose I'm grateful for them being pushy, lol. At any rate, Dr. Nygaard definitely exhibits the care and precision that you want in someone performing surgery on you, and I highly recommend her! read more

The office is very nice and everyone was cordial, as you would expect. If I had to sum up the office in one word it would be Arrogant. I'm sure the Doctors do good work, but if you want to have a say in your treatment plan or the drugs they give you, then this may not be a good office for you. I was referred to them by my regular Dentist. I don't have periodontal disease. Just a gum recession on a single bottom front tooth that needed a simple straightforward graft. I saw Dr Johnson and he did preform a common procedure on me prior to doing the graft to remove my Frenum (little piece of skin from gums to lower lip) and seemed to do a good job. As part of my quote for the work, they put down they were going to use Emdogain, a growth factor, as part of the graft procedure. I did some research on this and while it does seem to be effective at stimulating bone and tissue growth, I wondered, as many others have, what else it could stimulate as it causes the cells to behave in an abnormal way. They have not done any long term follow up studies as to the effects of this drug. Also, some people may have religious or moral objections to this drug due to the fact that it is derived from the teeth of pig embryos. None of this was told to me and they didn't even bother giving me informed consent on the drugs they were planning on using. It only showed up on the quote. I guess they don't think their patients are capable of making any informed decisions. Due to the risks of this drug (ALL drugs have some risks) and since my procedure was a simple one, I decided not to have this drug. Dr Johnson informed me they would not do the procedure without it. He said it gives better results. I said I understand, but would accept whatever the results were without it. I didn't want it. He refused. Said there were plenty of Periodontists who don't use it. WELL, that pretty much means it's not required. So why are they so insistent? Perhaps the $450 per tooth fee for this drug might have something to do with it. Quite a revenue generator for the office. Dr Johnson gave me the names of a couple of local Periodontists that don't use it and said the front office would write it up for me. Problem was that the lady at the front refused to write down the information and was very condescending and snotty. Said they don't refer to other Periodontists even though the Dr just did. All in all, not a very good experience. I would not recommend this office. read more
