The idea of trimming my pup's black nails was seriously stressing me out, almost as much as watching them grow a bit more month after month. I heard about this groomer and her nail trimming services truck as a frequent visitor of South Bark, and had heard great reviews, so I decided to pop in and ask if she was taking walk-ins that day. I noticed that she wasn't busy, but wanted to be sure I did not inconvenience her. I was met with a cold stare and a wave in, I thought she might have been having a bad day, so I chalked it up to that, and tried my best to move past the rude treatment. (I've worked in the service industry, and know it can be tough to deal with rude customers, so I wanted to show kindness). My husky mix is particularly stubborn and suffered abuse prior to being placed in a shelter, so she was a bit anxious. As I knelt down to comfort her and encourage her to go in and up onto the raised platform, the groomer snapped at me to never look a dog in the eyes as that makes them anxious. I've had my rescue for four years now, and have worked through so much with her to get her to trust and reduce anxiety. I think I know my dog well enough to comfort her. I decided to also chalk this up to her having a bad day, and decided let it go, so I remained quiet. As I got my dog on the platform, the groomer started giving her treats out of a bag. She did not ask me once if that was okay, and did not even acknowledge I was there and spoke solely to my dog. At this point I was upset, but didn't want to say anything as my dog was already hooked up and ready to get started on her trim. The groomer kept giving her treats, with unknown contents/ingredients, and started to trim. I noticed that my dog's nails were starting to splinter, and asked the groomer if she could also please grind the nails smooth, so they do not get caught on anything. I was met with an eye roll, but she obliged. At this point I just wanted to be done, pay, and leave. So once she was complete, I paid, and we were on our way. The end result? My dogs nails were still splintered and looked incomplete. I had to take my dog to PetSmart to get them fixed, which I have been doing since. I thought it would be nice to support a local, woman-owned business instead of a big box chain, but was sorely disappointed. I'm not sure of the name of the groomer on this particular day, and have seen so many raving reviews, so it may have been someone else working that day. I was so hopeful to have a new go-to grooming place for my pup, and wanted this experience to be better than it was, but this was unfortunately not the case. I have told my friends about this experience, as well as those who frequent the Grape Street dog park, as I don't want them to go through a similar experience that we had. I hope this was a one off incident, but if not, I would recommend a customer service workshop, and at a minimum, attending a class on basic human empathy. The groomer is already an expert on dog behavior and nutrition, as she knows my dog better than me , so a couple classes on being a considerate human being should come easy! read more

After going through so many Yelp postings for dog nail trimming and seeing the "no large dogs" limitations, I was happy to find Laura's post. When I contacted her via message, she replied within minutes, another good sign. She was able to come take care of our dogs the very next afternoon. I honestly thought the pit mix would be the problem, (after all these other folks who wouldn't work with larger dogs must have a reason) but it was our Jack Russell mix who was skittish. We spent 15 to 20 minutes trying to get her to relax in Laura's van. When it didn't happen, we switched dogs. Our lum of a pit mix crawled right up on the bench and let her trim his nails while chowing down her treats. She said most pits are like that. Some food, some petting and they are content. He took her maybe five minutes. To handle the Jack Russell mix she came into our home where the dog was more relaxed. My wife and I shoved treats at her after she was adorned with a cloth cone. Then Laura was able to handle clipping her nails as well. Now, you may look at the length of time she spent and think the price was high at $35 for the two dogs, but Laura provided a large van, was willing to adjust to the dogs, and quickly and safely trimmed their nails without injury to either dog. Our very anxious 4 yo Pitt desperately needs a nail trimming. He gets so nervous going to the vet we thought we'd try this. Laura said she loved pitties when we were booking the appointment. She showed up with a mask on (which, I get and appreciate) but our dog is skeptical of masked visitors he doesn't know. I walked to the other room to get my mask and he apparently growled at her. She asked me to grab him by the collar. He growled again. I got between them to give him a treat and reassure him that all was well. She bolted for the door. I told her outside that he has never hurt anyone and he was likely just upset about the mask and we probably just needed to give him a little time and she said she would but not with staffies (pitts). She left immediately. If you have that much trauma related to dogs, maybe you shouldn't trim their nails for a living. There were a lot of ways to handle that. When we first brought him home from the shelter, his toenails were like raptor claws and his feet were very irritated and sensitive. Absolutely hands down the best. We adopted a rescue that had been abused and has mobility issues. He HATED anyone touching his paws. We've had two groomers and a vet try to cut his nails to no success because he would start nipping, growling and twisting to get away. I tried Laura as a last resort. Laura was very attentive and accommodating! We were unsure how our dog would react. He is a rescue who is a gentle giant but is incredibly sensitive with his paws and is beyond difficult when we, the groomers and the vet attend to his paws. Takes three people to hold him. Laura does a wonderful job grooming the nails for all three of our small hyper dogs every month. I've tried many other groomers over the years with little success. The strain of putting all three pups in their crates and driving to a shop where I'd worry about the dogs' safety as well as that of the groomer and the other clients' pets was just too much.
