Dr Laurence was referred to me by my 15 year old sons pediatrician. I really wish my husband and I would have taken him somewhere else. Our first visit wasn't so pleasant he seemed to have a bit of an attitude when I tried to relay my concerns, especially when I asked questions. Long story short he suggested ordering stool samples and decided once we received the results we would figure out the next step. We scheduled a phone appointment and he called me a couple of weeks later. It was a four min call! He basically said that the test he ordered came back normal and if I had anymore concerns. First of all I don't know who you are deciding to "address" me in the manner you have. Secondly you were not in the office during this visit. I'll try and make this brief. You mentioned that I left out important information, thank you for bringing that to my attention, I will add the information. The Dr. DID NOT use his little finger nor did he use lubricant. I actually had no idea it should be his little finger, he used his index, so thank you for bringing that up. Also he did not explain what exactly his exam was about to be or why he was going to do it, "important information" to use your words left out by the Dr prior to his exam. Regarding his gloves I might add he left his discarded gloves on the table which is just off putting but I digress. Regarding my child's "behavior" we never brought her in for regards to her potty training, we were hoping to get answers as to the underlying issues for her constipation. But I don't want to waste too much time with you. I don't know who you are, but you are leaving a detailed response to my honest review and acting as if you were there. You have no idea what you are talking about. To address your claim I went in with preconceived ideas you are again 100% wrong and honestly very arrogant in your assumptions. My daughter's pediatrician who I admire and respect referred him, so if I had any preconceptions they were all positive and we went in very excited for the visit. So again arrogant assumptions by you an individual who was not in the exam room. Another point I left out in my review is my wife asked about prebiotics. Dr Laurence was very irritated at the idea of us asking could a prebiotic could help. Fast forward to today 1/30/2023 after following our own instincts and starting a regular regiment of prebiotics in my daughter's diet she has not had a single hard stool and is thoroughly potty trained. We accomplished this using ZERO of Dr Laurence recommendations and it further illustrates your blatant ignorance suggesting diet can't fix GI issues when the GI is the interface for everything we consume. I have no idea who you are or your relationship to this Dr but your rude response to my review is absolutely ridiculous and you act as if I have no right to leave an honest review. I went in enthusiastic about the visit hoping to get answers but instead I got what I described, now I have you, whoever you are, rudely responding to my review. Dr. Edward's staff is incredibly knowledgeable, thorough and professional. If I could rate his staff on their merits alone, I would give five stars. I hesitate to give Dr. Edward a strong recommendation but my impression of Dr. Edward could be an outlier. If you do see Dr. Edward, I would encourage you to do your due diligence. I saw Dr. Edward because my child is low in weight. Dr. Edward prescribed my child with a medication that is normally prescribed for cancer patients. I questioned Dr. Edward's assessment because he looked exclusively at the percentile data points on her growth chart. He never spoke to my child or asked me any questions about her development, genetic history, etc. He dismissed the food diary I kept. He also made a callous remark about "kids who stuff their faces with food when they should stop", which didn't sit well with me. After our unsettling session, I spoke to a few doctors who were surprised with his prescription. They were shocked that the government hasn't made it illegal to prescribe to babies the medication he recommended. When I relayed my experience to my pediatric PA and requested a second opinion, she acknowledged that Dr. Edward's bedside manners weren't the best and referred me to CHLA. CHLA reviewed my child's previous tests and charts, and told me that they had no concerns. No medication - let alone medication made for cancer patients - or further assessment was needed. read more

Dr Laurence saw my son for abdominal pain. He was diagnosed with gastritis after endoscopy and blood work. My complaints: 1. Method of treatment was over the counter antacid. After more than 1 year of antacids, there was no more improvement and we began losing progress. The doctor's remedy was a different antacid. 2. He insisted that we not change diet. After changing doctors and receiving more tests, it turns out my son is lactose intolerant. Dr. Laurence did not want us take away milk/dairy from his diet. 3. If you do not educate yourself on the medication or condition of your child, you may get lost when speaking to Dr Laurence because he talks and moves so quickly. Each visit lasted under 5 minutes. He always seemed in a rush to get the patient out and move onto the next. Opinion: The doctor seems locked into old ways such as children of any age need milk and meds cure everything. We know calcium comes from other sources too, not only milk. Almond milk also has calcium. Diet is very important and I was hoping that the doctor would guide me through diet adjustments, if necessary - he didn't even consider diet at anytime during treatment. Remedy: My wife and I decided to give my son organic yogurt 2-3 times a week so that he gets probiotics which help with digestion - within one week, my son stopped complaining about stomach pain. We are careful not to give too much yogurt since he is lactose intolerant. We also limit the amount of processed foods he eats - we allow it but keep it to a minimum. What a difference it has made. Really had the worst appointment with Dr Lawrence at the Sierra Madre location. I don't recommend to take your children here. Read a couples negative review about there experience at Dr. Lawrence's office and It's almost identical to the time that I had taken my child to an appointment. The details of how he approaches the room is an accurate description about how the Doctor treats his patients. They explained how they took there child (age 3). And when the Dr walks into the room doesn't make eye contact and asks to evaluate the childs abdomen and they replied yes. After that he asked to check down there and they say yes (not knowing what he planned to do next is shove his large adult size finger up the childs rectum) because HE DOESN'T EXPLAIN that at all. As parents we are going to him for help NOT to be VIOLATED AND TAKEN ADVANTAGE of. I still don't understand how or why didnt he call his nurse/medical assistant into the room to be present if that evaluation was the normal or routine??? He's a straight up lying asshole responding how the couple gave him permission to do that so called "evaluation down there" to there child. When my child was seen by this piece of shit after he "evaluated" and we were on our way, my child lost ability to walk so I had to carry them out. I wasn't sure what had just happened and was trying to process it all. It's an absolute shame, I called the office and spoke to the front desk explaining how we were seen by him and without knowing what to do I explained my child could not walk still the following day. The receptionist was as shocked as I was, she was speechless and was at a loss of words. It is traumatic and I completely disagree with how Dr Lawrence holds the couple responsible for his actions. Dr. Laurence has successfully treated three of my children for various stomach/digestive issues. He is SO patient and SO kind and is always smiling. And better than that, he's exceptionally skilled, able to quickly treat my children and ease their sufferings (which is the point of it all really). I know that when my kids see Dr. Laurence he will makes them better. The office staff is very competent and personally delightful. And there is very little paperwork to fill out. Everything runs flawlessly. The office is nestled right next to Sierra Madre library. The office waiting room is SO pleasant with a vaulted ceiling, large window wall for natural lighting and a coloring table and toys for little ones. The treatment rooms are comfortable and cheerful. And at the end kids may choose a lollipop (if it's ok with mom). Overall a great doctor, great office and great results. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would! I didn't even get past the front desk! The lady at the front asked me to purchase a mask for $0.25 and I told her I wasn't comfortable wearing a mask, I told her that I know she's just doing her job (even though her mask was below her nose and the nurse coming from the back didn't have a mask on) and that the mask mandates will lift on April 4 and I could reschedule until then if it was important. She said, even if they lift, we aren't lifting them. I told her that my pediatrician doesn't require, my chiropractor around the corner didn't require and had I been told over the phone, I wouldn't have come in but that I understood she was just doing her job. I told her I could wait outside and I didn't want to create a problem. She was rude and asked me for a $25 cancellation fee even though I drove there and wanted my daughter to be seen. She asked again for the $25 cancellation fee because they "did the work" and I politely said "I drove here and want to be seen, I'm not canceling so I won't pay a cancellation fee". Then I came here and read these reviews and WOW! I actually feel like this is God telling me this wasn't the right doctor for us. I'm glad a I didn't spend even a penny on them! read more

Now you cannot judge based on that but as soon as I started making conversation with him, he started being rude. His exact words were "I do not have time to check *patient's name* chart". Dr Laurence was terrible. The first day I met him, he couldn't comprehend any of the symptoms I was listing, and would basically make up his own for me. Without running any tests, he told me it was IBS and gastritis and gave me meds and called it a day. It work decently well, but when I would explain it wasn't fully working and I was still having problems, he wouldn't listen. Then COVID hit, and he started doing phone appointments. He really just wasn't listening to any of my symptoms and it got to a point where I disliked talking to him so much because I wasn't being listened to, that I would just tell him I was fine to end the call. On top of it all, his staff was always incredibly rude whenever my mom or myself tried making appointments. I eventually got a new doctor with friendly staff. He listened to my symptoms and instantly ran tests on me and found I have SIBO and is instantly starting treatment for it. I was also recommended to take a food allergy test to see if any of that could be a problem. I really don't recommend coming here if you want to be properly listening to and cared for. read more

This is a long overdue review. I saw this doctor back in 1996, when I was 9 years old. My memories of this doctor are less than pleasing. I went through hell under his care. I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. When I did the colonoscopy with him he gave me less sedative than he should have and his reasoning to my parents was he thought I could handle it, or I was a "tough" girl, or something to that affect. Wtf? That was his reasoning? I'm justifying that maaaybe he gave me less of a sedative because I am also a type 1 diabetic, so maybe it'd be important for me to be more conscious for that reason?? I doubt it, but that's a more sensible of a reason than to just think I'm tough and could handle it, which was the reasoning he gave us. Yes, I was a very stoic and quiet kid, but I could still feel pain! Jerk. I was drowsy during the procedure, but very much awake and aware during the colonoscopy. I remember feeling the sharp pains when he took samples from my colon. Ouch. Anyway, besides that, another awful memory is the time he prescribed me the MAX dose of prednisone which I believe was 60mg. I was so ill and developed secondary Cushings disease from it and had all the nasty side effects. He didn't start me off on 60mg, he increased it with each visit. Every increase just wasn't working and he disregarded that fact and put me on the max possible dose, which still didn't work. After enough torture from this doctor, my endocrinologist suggested to stop seeing Dr. Laurence and to go see another MUCH better doctor, Dr. Sinatra. When we told Dr. Sinatra how much prednisone he put me on, he said he would have NEVER put me on that much. With Dr. Sinatra's guidance, we decided on the surgery route and did a total colectomy with Dr. Atkinson, which was the RIGHT decision. I feel like Dr. Laurence was trying to prove a point to himself or something. To try and "fix" a situation with meds that just couldn't be fixed. He was an awful experience. And after 20+ years I still hold memories on how awful of a doctor he was. No thanks. I wouldn't put my kids under his care. He might be OK for some mild GI cases, but when you have a complicated case like mine was, he's just not capable of handling them. Go elsewhere. read more

It has now been over year since I have posted a review. I'm updating this review and still give this incredible man five stars. He's been here with me, thick and thin, through my struggle with ulcerative colitis. I have an ileostomy now, and no colon due to the aggression of this disease. He helped me find an amazing surgeon who knew EXACTLY what to do to help me. Dr. Laurance goes above and beyond for his patients. Many people don't understand the fact that digestive disorders, such as mine, are a guessing game. Some medications help others, some don't. I was that unfortunate person where no medications worked for me. Prednisone was the only thing keeping my symptoms at bay, and the symptoms of the steroids alone was torture. I do not blame Dr. Laurance for this. It was all on my immune system. I do not know why other people have such negative reviews. This man and his staff are absolutely wonderful people. They're like family to me. For those who post negative reviews... do research, LOTS of it, on your issues. I had to do that. Learn the symptoms. Learn when something's wrong. Take notes, write down dates, pain levels, food diary, etc.. Digestive disorders aren't like a simple throat infection. They require tests.. many in some cases, along with MANY types of different medications. Be sure to invest time into it as well. My ulcerative colitis wasn't just Dr. Laurance's responsibility. It was mine as well. Because of Dr. Laurance's help, I have my life back. It's good to still be walking this planet and breathing. Without Dr. Laurance's help, I probably wouldn't be here today. I'm honored to be a patient under his care. If I didn't ever meet him, I wouldn't have found a great surgeon to give me my ileostomy. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to have met this man. I have been taking my daughter to Dr. Laurence for years. He is sweet and caring and has even come to the hospital on a Sunday when we reached him on his day off. My daughter has EOE and could not pass food that was lodged in her esophaguses. He came in put her out and removed it quickly. No BS and no hours in the ER. I would recommend him highly! My ten year old son had intestinal issues (five months) and his Primary Physician set up the appointment with Dr Edward. I don't go out of my way to write bad reviews, but... Dr Edward had horrible "bed side manners" with us, as he never addressed my son directly, only myself. (He's TEN not two...). This was his second time seeing this doctor, with my wife taking our son to his first appointment. It seems that he will prescribe a medication and if it doesn't work, just move on to the next and then the next. Without any further input from my son or myself? His line of, "there are seven of these medications and eventually one may work", isn't a very scientific approach. Especially when my son has been almost bedridden for almost four-five months. Long story short- this doctor does not seem to care very much about his patients and takes a very "next!" approach. With my son, he appeared to want to get out of the room as quickly as possible. He spent no more than four-five mins with us. We don't need to be pampered, but even "pretending" to genuinely care would be nice. Eventually he was prescribed antibiotics by another doctor and his symptoms have been clear for two months now. I would not go back to this doctor. I read some good reviews on him as well, so maybe he's just "hit or miss?" But when your child is suffering daily, a parent does not want a "miss..." Dr. Laurence follows outdated methods of treating kids. We went to him because our 2 month old showed signs on heart burn. He put him on a cocktail of drugs including levsin, nexium, and erythromycin. Adult GIs and other pediatricians were surprised and some shocked at the amount and frequency. They asked us to get a second opinion from a westside pediatric GI, who told us that some of the meds have not even been tested on kids and others are not used on kids below 4 years. In their opinion, it was unnecessary and dangerous. It took us 6 weeks to wean him off the drugs and there were multiple side effects. The staff is lovely and helpful, but Dr. Laurence, in my opinion, practices outdated medicine and severely over-utilizes drugs. I have never written a review of a physician, but feel compelled because we heard a similar story from another mom recently. read more

Superb specialist for a child. Orders of magnitude better than than anyone we've run into at Stanford and Lucille Packard in the same specialty. A very easy person to work with to get a problem diagnosed and treated. Doesn't do anything crazy but patiently, safely, works to figure out what is ultimately going to resolve the issue. Staff did wonderful job of setting up for surgical medical procedures in nearby facilities that were simply wonderful for both patient and parent, esp. compared to any large hospital. Worst, worst doctor ever for children!!! I completely agreed with Anil P. My daughter is 6 years old. He gave the same medicines as Anil P. He over dosage my daughter with medications. The pharmacist was having a hard time supplying those medications. The pharmacist suggest that I should go to children hospital to get a second opinion. My daughter was having very bad side effects that she end up in ER. It took over 6 weeks to get all the medications out of your system. Be aware of all the medications you get. Dr. Laurence and his friendly office staff have been a God-send throughout my daughter's long struggle with multi-systemic issues. No one was listening to us or following through with tests & procedures to get to the bottom of her severe abdominal pain, constant vomiting and nausea. Dr. Laurence immediately had her referred for an upper and lower GI, colonoscopy, endoscopy, dye contrast tests and then put her in the hospital for full body testing. He is very knowledgeable, warm and caring, a great listener & refreshingly open-minded. There have been a few times I have called his office to ask a question and in about 5 minutes he's calling me back himself to answer questions thoroughly and thoughtfully. I can't thank him and his office enough. Our pharmacy knew of his stellar reputation, when we went to pick up prescriptions the first time. I was so relieved. Since we were referred to him, I've had the pleasure of meeting so many parents and children treated by Dr. Laurence. They feel relieved to have finally found a dr. that continues to keep up with the latest research and new information pertaining to his patients. I've read some of these less than complementary reviews on Yelp and I couldn't disagree more with them. Every experience we've had with Dr. Edward Laurence, since we first walked into his office in Sierra Madre, has been very thorough & never rushed. We received a scary ultrasound report after my 9 yr old had been complaining of stomach aches. I can't even describe how scared and worried I was... I have been taking my son to doctor Laurence for over 4 years now. He has always been outstanding. He wants to get to the root of the problem not just mask it with medication. He hears my concerns and doesn't make me feel guilty for them. I was concerned about forcing an enema on my son and he heard my concerns and let me take a different route before doing an enema. Avoid this place like the plague! I took my daughter there for constipation and diarrhea hoping to get some answers. I found that Dr. Laurance was not a very good listener and was argumentative in his questioning as if I don't know what I'm seeing from the child I'm raising. He recommended I put her back on formula even though she is more than a year old. Just unheard of! Especially for a child who is already dealing with constipation... Everyone knows that formula causes constipation. He was only concerned with treating her symptoms rather than getting to the root of the issue. The day before we were to return for another appointment after getting labs done, we were called and told that we were not a good fit and to find another GI. I was told that "he sees more than 30 patients per day" and doesn't have time to spend on our child. read more

This is the BEST, most caring doctor! He was the only doctor who actually believed I was ill. He took action immediately in my care. Unlike other doctors he did thorough testing and had me admitted into a hospital for an all over evaluation. I'm only a teenager, but I've gone to about 20 different doctors in the last 2 years, and he has been the biggest help and a huge part of my recovery. He keeps his work personal and is endearing; he listened and gave attention to both my mom and I. Doctor Lawrence is truly an amazing pediatrician. He saw the extreme pain I was in and gave me medication for only what I needed and not a bunch of random things with horrid side effects. If things didn't work he openly talked with me and was open to try new things. Getting well from the excruciating state I was in was a long process, but with a caring doctor like Dr Lawrence, and an impeccably, kind staff it was much more tolerable. I'm doing incredibly well thanks to Dr Lawrence. It was a blessing to be sent to him, and I wouldn't still be here if it weren't for his care. read more

I cannot agree with Chrislee V. strongly enough!! DO NOT USE THIS DOCTOR unless you want inaccurate diagnostics, insufficient information, no call backs, rude receptionists that hack you off when you're already in turmoil because of your ill child, It costs long drives in the middle of nowhere, you may as well drive to LA Childrens Hospital if you're coming here, at least you will be taken care of alot sooner than you will here. We have a few children 2 which are now in thier 20's we have rasied them with doctor visits and proper healthcare all thier school years and we have never ever dealt with a Doctor that has his head screwed on so backwards such as this one (QWACK). Spare your precious time and your money and do as recommended by other reviewers and GO SOME WHERE ELSE.
