My mom and I took a day at Waikele to check it out, having not been there in a while. Decided to get lunch at one of the food trucks. We chose Laverne's for a couple reasons... 1) Who doesn't like Hawaiian Food? 2) They had the shortest lime at the time. (About 2pm on a Monday), and it was necessary with 2 hungry babies in toll. Anyway, my mom and I both ordered the Squid Luau plates, but I opted for Poi instead of rice. For the small size poi, there was an upcharge of almost $3. That's understandable, poi is expensive everywhere. Although the portion sizes sucked, it was really small as can be seen in the photo I posted. Even the Mac salad scoop was tiny. The Roast Pork was cooked perfectly and the savory gravy makes you want to eat it with a lot of rice with the Mac Salad accenting the plate (cool and creamy). Well what can I say I always passing by this food truck located in the old Kmart parking lot in waikele waipahu. Well today I told my husband let's try their squid luau for lunch. So after did some grocery shopping at safeway he went over there to order our squid luau but before he went to order I told my husband find something else to go with the squid luau. Well he took a while I was thinking had lots of people before him but NO he was taking pictures off their front of the food truck. SMH. He came back with plastic bag with our lunch. Park our car and to my surprise the plate lunch was in compartment style plate lunch not individually packed by itself. He ordered the chicken long rice plate, including the squid luau, lomi salmon, poi and haupia and of course the chicken long rice. The taste was okay, the chicken long rice was a bit salty and the squid luau was salty with a coconut milk taste their was squid cut up inside you can see it. Also ordered a laulau plate..the squid luau was tasty. And I ordered the Kanaka Nachos $10.95..which i was disappointed with. Proportions was good but I was expecting more than chips and kalua pig. I went to the Laverne's Lunch Wagon today, fronting Home Depot in Kapolei. I love eating Laverne's Hawaiian food BUT today I was disappointed. I love squid luau and always make sure I order a side of squid luau. Today, NO SQUID was in the squid luau!!!!! Seriously, what's up with that! Why call the dish squid luau if you are not going to put squid in i!. Even the Kanaka plate I ordered today had no squid in it. I know we are facing inflation and all of that and bad enough the plate lunches are pricey now! Understandable, it is like that in all food establishments. But man, don't totally take out the squid and sell that dish without squid. That's called FAKE ADVERTISEMENT!!! I am so passionate about a good squid luau dish because my dad taught us a good squid luau dish is what people will always talk about when they go to a luau. My dad made sure the squid luau we made always had a good portion of squid in it. Even today, I hear family and friends say, no one can beat uncle's squid luau. It was so ono, you can taste the coconut milk and had a good portion of squid in it. I never write a review about anyone's food but today Laverne's Lunch Wagon, you need to know you disappointed me! I paid a total of $40+. On a positive note, your portion size is amazing! Everything else was ono. Just the squid luau ( my favorite portion ) was disappointing. My whole review was partially based on the quantity but rather what really did it for me is that not one but both orders were wrong. We actually went and order again to give it another shot and somehow messed up again?? I just know my papa was also very disappointed both times with the food he was served. I hear you about the proportions and prices, but even despite that the food quality is okay/good which means average for me. Having worked and helped run a smoothie business in the past some people will love and others will have a totally different opinion that's just what comes with working in food industry. Whenever we're in the area we'll always try to go support the local food businesses over the corporate food chains, especially the food trucks near Old Navy to be particular. It's also hard to pass this section up because of the aroma of Leonard's Malasadas makings it's way to our nostrils lol! But we'll save that review for later! As I was saying, we think it's important to keep our money within the local communities, so coming to these little eateries is never a second guess for us. And besides who am I kidding, we love the food here! My daughter and I usually share the "Kanaka Plate" which if I remember correctly is $18 and some change. This plate comes with a little bit of everything and can definitely be shared if you are a tiny eater like myself. It consists of 1 laulau, a generous portion of Kalua Pig, a scoop of Chicken long rice, a scoop of Squid Luau, 2 scoops of white rice, a decent side portion of lomi salmon, and also a decent portion of Haupia to to please your sweet tooth afterwards. For $18 you really can't go wrong. It's enough to keep both my daughter and I satisfied for the next hour or two lol. We've bought and made homemade laulaus ourselves on numerous occasions being HI born and raised. It's not something unusual for locals to do. So you can definitely tell when a laulau is homemade or store bought. These definitely seem to be store bought. Although they aren't "junk" either. Just your ordinary typical laulau that comes with a chunk of pork, fish, some fat, and luau (taro) leaves. The Kalua Pig is on the drier/tougher side but still not inedible, Chicken long rice is flavorful, and the squid luau, although really green than what were used to seeing, is still tasty! To me it's hard to go wrong with Hawaiian food because it's so simple, and not overly complicated with a bunch of fancy additions to it like a lot of foods you find in restaurants today. It's quick and gets the job done to fulfill your Hawaiian food cravings quickly! They also carry an amazzzinnnngggg Chocolate Crunch parfait made from the sweetest Deluscious Dreamz if you're quick enough to snag them before they sell out! This lunch wagon was a recommendation from a close friend of mines who swore by their Filipino options. Got around to coming here while on a Saturday drive with the fam and was excited to try their food! The menu was up front and easy to read and the service was fast! BUT!!!! and some of you that love this place might hate me for this but please allow me to express my disappointment. First off, the utensils are inside of the plates sitting on top of the wax paper that sits on the food and I didn't like that because I was about to walk back and ask for utensils. Secondly the clear plastic bag was already slimy from the servers hands when they wrapped it and I had sauce all over my hands before I reached my car. Thirdly, I ordered a mix plate of pork adobo and smoked meat and you absolutely cannot mess up pork adobo!!! I mean there are so many varieties of pork adobo from different restaurants but this one was very soupy and most of my pieces were 85-90% fat! The soup wasn't very vinegary like I expected adobo to be and the soup was thick and nearly cream-like in texture. I can't say I enjoyed the pork adobo and I'd go as far as saying it was terrible! HOWEVER!!!!! the smoked meat was super good! And I would say excellent! It if weren't for the smoked meat I'd have just thrown the entire plate away. My plate came with Mac salad ( which was good) and for nearly $15 did not come with a drink so I had to purchase that separately. Bottom line is that I would not come out here to eat there ever again! BUT if someone bought home some of their smoke meat and offered me some or maybe had some of their smoke meat at a party (because they cater) I'd definitely eat that. read more

The chicken long rice was good. I just wish it had green onion. The poi and Teri chicken was okay. Now, the mac salad....I don't know if this is their version of mac salad, but it was on the sour side. I'm not sure if they put a little vinegar in it, like the way mainlanders make it, or if they use a different kind of mayo (Sorry, but gotta be Best Foods); or maybe it was on the verge of spoiling. The food is not consistent. Ordered the large roast pork entree last week and it was a very large portion,pork was very good,no fat,nice big pieces of pork. Went back a couple of days later, waited in a small line only to find that the pork entree was sold out, no "sold out" sign on the menu board as are other entrees are listed "sold out".Wouldn't have been as bad if we hadn't just driven all the way in from Waikiki for a repeat of the lovely dinner previously had. The staff member could have cared less, a meaningless "Sorry" when he said it was sold out. Gave them a 3rd chance yesterday,Pork was full of fat, it had a smoked flavour, smaller portion of pork(large order)more gravy than pork,gravy was lumpy and gel like whiteish colour. What ii really like about this lunch wagon is that it is centrally located in Miiliani Tech park right outside the Oceanic Cable building...There are couple more food trucks as well all next to each other...The young lady that was taking my order greeted me with a friendly smile and answered all my questions about certain dishes they had on the menu..ii wish ii had gotten her name..The line was pretty decent as ii must've just missed the lunch crew or got there right before, either way the wait wasn't long at all..
