Known for their Hawaiian combo plates with popular items like squid luau, lau lau, chicken long rice, lomi salmon and haupia. I recently got their #1 Hawaiian plate with lau lau and kalua pig and then got an extra side order of their squid luau. The lau lau and kalua pig definitely needed poi -- I think you can only get poi as a side order because it doesn't come with any of the Hawaiian plates. Squid luau is one of my favorite Hawaiian foods and I did find a few really big pieces of seafood in my side order! It was sweet from the coconut and really tasty. Laverne's is an unassuming food truck at the beginning of the row of Food Trucks next to Petco. The prize from Lavern's was a Kanaka Plate which included Kalua pig, Lomi salmon, Squid luau, 2 scoops of white rice, Lau lau, haupia, and chicken long rice. Also included was a dessert from Delucious Dreams: the viral Chocolate Strawberry Dubai Cup! Yum! This lunch was so gigantic that my mom, niece, and I weren't able to finish it! Everything looked authentic and tasted spot on! Thank you for the friendly, efficient service! I appreciated the Aloha Spirit of the shy workers and their friendly attitude! The long rice was perfect. Kalua pig and cabbage was a bit bland-- not enough salt. Also, portions were not what I expected compared to price-- plate was $23 plus change and not counting tip. After reviewing menu decided to share a combination plate of Kailua Pork and Cabbage and Pork Lau Lau which came with two scoops rice and a small Mac salad. The Kailua Pork and Cabbage was ono although could have received a little more pork in the mix. The Lau Lau was good and hot and delivered. Rice was on the cool side, would be better warm. They have a little outdoor space setup with tables and chairs, nicer than sitting our car. Service was fast, food came out quickly. All in all it is a good place to stop for a quick Hawaiian food fix while doing your shopping at Home Depot. read more

Maybe because it's a little sweeter than other eateries, and they have large chunks of squid in it. I can eat the whole container in one sitting, but I usually only eat half, and share the other half with my son. Smoked meat - 5 stars - on the sweeter side, and lots of flavor. Not too dry either. I always used to get the smoke meat combo plate, but I can definitely get full off just the mini squid luau. I can't wait to come back for more. I'm hoping sooner than later. I love Laverne's and have been coming here for years! We catered from them + would always pickup from their store in Waipahu when they had it. Brah, I came to the Waikele truck stop today for a side of Squid Luau and I saw they had pastele stew too so I got a side of that as well. My total was $25 for less than a pound of each! Just got back from Europe and nothing beats the taste of home like Laverne's food truck at Waikele Outlet, Waipio! We went for the Beef Stew and Pork Lau Lau combo. The person who took our order was friendly, and we got our food really fast. The beef stew was delicious and the meat was super tender. Maybe just a pinch more salt would make it perfect. We were in the Waikele area doing home improvement shopping for the hale and we were pretty hungry. We decided to check out the food trucks at the other side of Lowe's and past the Petco. I haven't had Laverne's Hawaiian food in a long time. I've always purchased the Chocolate crunch and that never disappoints (I got it!) I love Kalua pig, squid luau and I wanted to try their chicken long rice (it reminds me on my parents food as they have both passed). I got the number 1 plate which came with haupia and Lomi salmon and paid cash (I found the price dropped a bit :) The gentleman at the ordering window greeted me with a smile and service was quick! Now the food! Omg so freaking yummy! The Kalua pig was not oily and very tasty and they gave a lot! The squid luau was a mouthful of squid in every bite and the chicken long rice brought me to tears! This area has a wide area of food trucks from Filipino, Thai, Shave ice, Taste Tea, the ever famous Leonard's malasada and Laverne's is perfectly located at the end closest to Petco. This review is loooooong overdue; I truly thought I had already written one being this is hands down my most favorite lunch plate! The kanaka plate has 2 scoops of rice, chicken glass noodles/long rice, lomi salmon, squid luau, kalua pork, and lau lau. Yeah, it's a very full plate! I'm not a big eater... I usually only finish a half burger or sandwich when I order one. So when I get the kanaka plate, it usually lasts me at least 4 enjoyable meals. Everything is absolutely amazing but here's in my personal order of preference. Squid luau ~ ummm food crack?? That may be the best way to describe it. I could seriously have this everyday and be so utterly content. Slightly sweet, slightly salty, creamy and rich. My only complaint is there isn't enough, but that's on me lol. I may have an unhealthy obsession with this dish. Lomi salmon ~ the balance of their lomi salmon is perfect. Generous portion of salmon to a zesty combo of diced fixings. Another dish I'd be content with having everyday. Lau lau and kalua pork ~ these are at a healthy tie with each other. I love enjoying them at the same time. Just doesn't feel complete having one without the other. Deliciously smoky and juicy; just hints of fat so it's not heart attack crazy. My least favorite is the long rice. Not because theirs isn't good. Don't get me wrong, it's gingery, sometimes heavier on the salt, but I still tear it up and empty my entire plate. But growing up on long rice, I guess it was one of those things I didn't reacquire a favor to (yet?). I continue to surprise myself by accepting flavors I thought I had dismissed after getting tired of it growing up. In any case, aside from the occasional heavy salty noodles, I can't get enough of this plate. It's held the spot as my favorite lunch plate for over a decade... others have tried, but this still comes out on top for me! Oh, and while I do enjoy the smoked meat, it's usually hubs' order. And when our daughter visits, she always picks up a plate to take back with her. They're the big meat eaters in our family. It's smoky tasty and generously portioned. The squid was present, the coconut milk had just the right amount, and it was just sweet enough. The pork adobo was tender, but you have to like the flavor of peppercorns. One of my friends took the beef stew and roast pork plate. The roast pork was a little tough, and the beef stew was average. I came here specifically because my coworker highly recommended the MAHI WITH GARLIC BUTTER CAPER SAUCE. Popped in & there was no line, the reason for low stars is the male at the window looked so upset like I was an inconvenience. The plates come in both regular or mini size and with toss or Mac salad. Just be aware you need to specify while ordering because he won't ask you what you would like and just assign one. It was my first time so I didn't know I had a choice so he just assigned Mac salad (which was fine). The mahi itself was cooked well, crispy outside which held the sauce well. It was on the sweeter side but still very tasty. I wouldn't mind having this meal again but maybe through door dash in the future. read more

My wife had mentioned Squid Luau a few days ago. We were in the Waikele area , so we stopped at Lavern's. This food truck is located near safe Safeway, alongside a number of other food trucks. I ordered the squid luau and chicken long rice combo. The squid luau was good. It it had a few more pieces of squid. It would have been better.The chicken long rice was just a bit salty, but I did enjoy it. The combo plate came with lomi lomi salmon. You could see and taste the salmon. Came here because I was craving lau lau. There are only a few places in Waipahu that sell and Laverne's felt more convenient for us since it was a food truck near the Waikele shopping center. Don't forget to check in to get a free drink if you haven't already. I decided to order the lau lau and chicken long rice combo. It came out to $17.91 after paying with cash. The wait wasn't that long and once i got my plate, you can feel the heaviness of it. Once i opened it, i was greeted by a huge laulau on a bed of chicken long rice, white rice and mac salad. My mouth was watering looking at it. I unwrapped the laulau and took my first bite. It literally melted in my mouth. So moist and delicious. The chicken long rice was a nice chaser after each bite of the laulau. Super flavorful and the soup went perfect on top the rice. Mac salad was pretty good but nothing different than many other places. With that, i found my new spot for laulau at the west side during the daytime. read more

Hunger can be the force to try something new. It's a treat for us to eat takeout and my husband wanted to try Laverne's based on all the rave reviews. We were on the road and decided wth. Got to Waikele and they were open - yay. My husband's go to is laulau and beef stew. He was kinda disappointed that the leaves were still on, most places take it off, really messy to deal with. He couldn't believe there was hardly any fat in the laulau and gave no comment about the stew. I just wanted to mix it up. The pork adobo was not dry, but hardly adobo tasting. The smoked meat tasted overly sweet and the smoky taste seemed fake. I really wanted to like the food, but I just couldn't. For the price, I won't be coming back anytime soon - maybe I'll give it a few months to try again. read more

Really wanted to love Laverne's, but it just fell a bit short for me. Maybe my tastebuds just need fine tuning, though; they say you start losing your tastebuds as you age, so that could be the problem! I ordered a combination plate with beef stew and roast pork. It came with two scoops of rice and mac salad. The takeout container was totally full, so the portion size is great. It's just that neither dish was very flavorful. The meat was tender enough though... just no flavor! Both the beef stew and roast pork had a lot of gravy; I expected that for the stew, but didn't think there would be that much for the roast pork. The mac salad was a bit on the salty side, but it had pretty good flavor. The service was okay and they were quick with my order. I wish Laverne's the best, but I probably won't be back. read more

My boyfriend highly recommended this place as he kept mentioning it earlier this year. And finally after hearing it many times, I got to try it! It's located in the "lunch wagon area" of the back of the parking lot near Old Navy Outlet in the Waikele Center. Lots of parking that won't ever be a problem. There's a small outdoor dining area for those ordering from Laverne's. We got a combo plate of kalua pig and squid luau with a side order of the smoked pork. Super excited to try the squid luau as it is something I always get to determine the place to eat. Weird of me but good squid luau makes the meal so enjoyable LOL. and surprisingly, the squid luau from this little food truck was ABSOLUTELY amazing! I loved it soooo much. It had a thick consistency that was almost like curry. It was super creamy with a semi-heavy coconut flavor which I don't mind at all. Lots of squid bits too! The smoked pork was also suuuper good. Lots of smokey flavor which was amazing. The kalua pork was tasty (not much smoked flavor tho), but not as amazing as the squid luau and smoked pork LOL. I couldn't stopped saying how amazing the squid luau was to my boyfriend and his family LOL. Definitely give it a try if you don't mind a semi-heavy coconut flavor.
