based on feedback from other concrete folks and friends this was a bad result as you can see.

I really wanted to give Lavu a 100, but based on the results of our backyard concrete, its hard to do so in my experience. I am posting an honest review of how our concrete turned out. Look at the picture and see for yourself. While our front driveway turned out great, the backyard was very questionable even from our friends and colleagues. The lavu team is responsive but the end result was not what I wanted after 1-2 months of concrete work.

More water coming into the house

I hired Sam and team to work on the sidewall of my home which was made of concrete due to leakage into the home. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough that it needed to be fixed. The leak happens when it rains. Initially when I had Sam come by the home, he immediately took a look and noticed that the leak was happening because of the "alleyway" concrete (an area between my home and my neighbors) was sloped towards my home. He recommended we re-slope that section of the concrete and fix the concrete in front of the house as well since the concrete was cracked (note: also there was an entry point for water to come into the home) Overall good experience and I appreciate the locally owned business and the fact that he's had over 30+ years of experience. He knows what he's good at and that's what he focuses on versus trying to do too much. The work was done fast and efficient. We're expecting a big rainfall the next 3-4 days so I'll be able to see if the work he did fixed the issue and I can make a quick update here.

Ask the Community - Lavu Concrete

Reviews for Lavu Concrete are from northern CA. Sam T says he is the son & has taken over the business. But the OR CCB license for Lavu Concrete is issued to Amelia Ofa Tukuafu in NE Portland. Who owns the OR business? Who runs the OR business?

Husband and wife.amelia is my wife. Is that a problem? I moved from California last year which I took over my dad's concrete company. now I moved with my family to portland start fresh concrete liscense.

I had a small, wooden step in the garage that the builders put in so I hired Sam to lay a larger concrete one.

Terrible finished product, at twice the bidded price…read more Upon calling Joe for a bid, he requested the address so he could come out and look at the site before bidding it. (The work site was accessible from the alley so we we didn't need to be home for him to review it). A week later, I texted and asked if he'd been by, and if he had any questions. He sent a bid, which was lower than others and we booked him for the work. On the day of, Joe announced that he was charging us twice as much because he didn't know there was any demo/paver removal involved- which he would know if he'd looked at the site before bidding the project. We were frustrated but agreed because the timing was critical for the next phase of our project. The bid was for 8" deep, with rebar. I came out when he was 1/3 of the way into the pour to discover Joe was pouring 2"-6" deep, with no rebar. When I questioned him, he flatly lied and said it was 8" depth until I offered to get a measuring tape, at which point he admitted it wasn't. He then tried to pour using our uneven pavers as the form. When confronted he noted he'd use an even edge- we afterward discovered he used lumber from our property for framing the pour. There are so many more issues, I wont outline them all. The end result cost twice as much as originally bid, and may need to be jackhammered out so that it can be poured correctly.

The old driveway was removed on Friday. On Monday the forms and rebar was installed. Then the cement truck arrived and the concrete was spread evenly 6 inches deep. The surface was smoothed out evenly. Then, Coca-Cola was sprayed over the surface which prevented the top layer of cement to harden. Later in the day, Joe returned and washed the top layer of concrete away exposing the aggregate. The finished product looked exactly as Joe said it would.

The overall process was not as smooth as we expected from System Pavers given its name and pricing tier. There were several miscommunications and/or mistakes that we had to catch and bring up ourselves (sometimes repeatedly), which was disappointing and stressful. However, at the end of the day, everything did get addressed to our satisfaction and for that, we're thankful for the team we had.

I was able to schedule a free consultation on their website the next week and had Dan come by. I am a pretty indecisive person but Dan did an amazing job taking my vision and helping it come to life. The estimate was done the same day, I felt some pressure to sign the deal that day but negotiated what I thought was fair. I was originally told a time frame 1-2 weeks earlier than what happened, which is one of the reasons why this is losing a star. Eric, the construction manager, came by with Dan a few weeks later to do an initial construction walk through and he also suggested adding another level/ stairs and helped me figure out a drain situation. I appreciated the feedback and ideas. Overall, both Dan and Eric went the extra mile and were responsive when I reached out. The week of construction, communication on when they were coming, progress, etc could have been better from the Crew itself but it is a sub-contractor.. (which is the other reason for one less star). The team worked hard in 80+ degree heat 5 days in a row, were very polite to me and the job was done quickly. Eric did a final walkthrough with me and I pointed out a couple minor flaws and they were quickly repaired the following week to my satisfaction. Overall, I recommend this company as they back up their product and have a good warranty. It is pricey, yes, but I believe this is a good investment and I have really loved spending time in my new yard. Thanks!
