My new NAPA truck radiator failed on a cross-country trip and discharged all the engine oil. This was one of the shops recommended by NAPA road service. Several other shops were too busy to help. THIS WAS a 5 * shop. Before Danny Fox retired, everything was always more than perfect. My grandmother and I used his services for years when I went to college, and now that my own son is looking for a car, I bought one from an auction and took it for an automotive diagnostic before spending a ton of money on it. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED. First, I did not receive a printed sheet detailing the results of the automotive diagnostics, which, at $187, should be provided and explained. (you have to request it now and it can be emailed or texted to you) Pricing: As a teacher and a AAA customer, I have always received a discount,... but not on this trip. It's only on labor - up to $75. The preventative maintenance inspection said it was completed. When I got my car home, there was 0 coolant, a low tire, low power steering, and antifreeze levels--- I KNOW that Danny would not have let the car leave the shop like that. It used to be worth the money and the wait to get your car into the shop, but I probably will not return. read more

I can't recommend them. They chose to perform an engine breakdown after advising me that they would contact the warranty company before doing so. They did not contact the warranty company until they had already performed the diagnostic. The warranty company did not see them fit to perform a diagnostic or repair and did not give their approval. LAD then advised me that a lean would be placed on my vehicle until I could pay the $1,600 bill. I've taken both of my vehicles here several times. Service is always quality and timely, and anyone I speak to is both friendly and helpful.

A lot of people seem to have good experiences here -- mine was unfortunately bad enough to leave this review. This is an unbiased full rundown if you care to read it, but basically they wanted 2x the dealer cost to replace the wrong part. My vehicle began to overheat while I was in Lawrence, out of town, and I took it here to get checked out. Service rep said there was a leak in my radiator, someone had apparently used stop leak in the past, and it would be ~$1000 to replace it with both hoses and a coolant flush, all aftermarket parts. Service rep mentioned needing to "take off the front clip" to explain the high cost -- this just isn't true on a 4 cylinder tacoma, the radiator is held in with 4 bolts that you can easily access without removing anything. I called the Toyota dealer down the street to get a quote on the exact same repair -- the dealer cost, with all parts and labor, for the same job was ~$500. I paid LAD their diagnostic fee, took my truck to the dealer, and the dealer couldn't find any leaks or signs of leaks in the radiator (the system held pressure without leaking). Dealer recommended checking the thermostat, which I bought and installed, and it ends up someone had removed the thermostat at some point -- the thermostat helps seal the thermostat housing in this system, and its absence could explain both the overheating issue and why someone might've used stop leak in the past. I called LAD after this, spoke to a couple people, and they basically stand by their diagnosis and quoted cost for the repair. People make mistakes, automotive troubleshooting can be tricky and I would've probably accepted an apology, but... One rep claimed that the ancient stop leak leftover in the system must have plugged the (apparently nonexistent) leak in the radiator on my 1/4 mile drive down the street to Toyota -- if you don't know the directions for using stop leak, please look them up and see if that's likely. Another rep claimed there's no way the absence of a thermostat could've caused my problem -- this bit seemed less intentionally deceptive and just ignorant, again please look into this on your own if you'd like; turbulence generally helps heat transfer. Either way, with a combination of higher than dealer cost, deception and ignorance at work I definitely don't recommend trying your luck here. read more

We took her car to our car doctor in Manhattan and found out that the information was fraudulent and excessive! She did not need her brakes fixed. This was the most obvious case of ambulance chasing that I have ever encountered. My son brings his car in because he is having engine problems. We ask them to see what is wrong and then give him an oil change too at the end. Engine needs to be totally replaced. Obviously with the car's age and miles, he is not going to have the work done. He goes to pick up the car and pay for the diagnosis. We don't look at the details of the bill until he gets home. Thinking it was high for a diagnosis, we look at the bill and they charged him for an oil change and tire rotation on a basically dead engine car. Thinking it is a mistake, we call and are given the line; That they do the oil change first. Really. Doesn't make sense at all. We knew there was a big problem and you do the oil change first and rotate the tires.... Very disappointing and absolutely will not recommend them to anyone. read more

AC quit working in our car. They told us it had a leak and can fix it for 500 dollars. Next day still not working they said for 1200 more dollars they can clean blockage with a 3 year warranty. Next hot day AC not working we were told no warranty cuz something else needs replacing, Was told they can fix it now for 2900 dollars. So we are out 1700 dollars. They should be called Lawrence Automotive Parts Changers. In my opinion Diagnostics shouldn't be in their name. My rating is -1700 stars. Please get a second opinion. We took our car in to have wiring looked at, as we found a squirrels fur under the hood. It cost $186 to have a diagnosed They found some damage and said it was gonna cost $1400 to repair it. Luckily, a family member was able to come over and diagnose it, splice some wiring and secured a plug and now it's running perfectly. read more

They offered to replace my battery for close to $400, which is more than double the average price. I'm sure their services are fine, but for the prices I won't be coming back. read more

I have only heard good things from others about Lawrence Automotive Diagnostics. They fixed my car and did so professionally. However, their markup on parts is extremely high. The mechanic said it was best to use the factory parts--and I agree. My fuel pump costs $434 from the manufacturer. The MSRP is $482. The cost of the fuel pump on my receipt was $712. That's a mark-up of around 50% (+$230 over MSRP or +$278/64% over my cost). Of course they need to markup the part for overhead, transportation, etc., but I thought there must be a mistake. When I talked with the mechanic, he said they needed to increase the cost to warranty the work for two years/24,000 miles (though the part is already warrantied for 1 year by the manufacturer). While I appreciate the warranty, the labor to put it in in the first place was far less than the markup. I'm satisfied with the service, but it's hard to trust a company that increases prices by 50% or more. read more

I definitely would take anything they say with a grain of salt and make sure to grab a second opinion. Long story short. We took my boyfriends car in with the idea that a couple things needed to be fixed before driving a long road trip. My dad had previously warned me saying something like "these people are going to see you and assume they can take you for a fool or make some money off of you, beware that they may call you and claim somethings need to be fixed when they really don't." Which is exactly what happened, we asked them to check the oil, the gas gauge, and fix the alignment. All of which was supposed to be under 200 dollars. They called me back with over $1,500 worth of repairs and said that my boyfriends car was not safe to drive at the current state that it was in. Taking my dads warning I said thanks and that we wanted a second opinion before we proceeded with any repairs. We took his jeep to the dealership that same day and received a call back telling us that none of the repairs they claimed "needed to be fixed to make the car safe" were actually an issue. They basically tried to scam us out of almost $2,000 because they thought we looked like morons. And they actually charge way too much for "labor" when I asked what an oil change would cost they said $20 when I got the oil changed they bill was $55 claiming $35 dollars for "labor" meaning that an oil change is not $20 its actually $55. I would definitely find someplace else in lawrence to take your vehicle for any type of repair or service. Avoid them at all costs, or it may end up costing you wayyy too much. read more

Lawrence Automotive Diagnostics was recommended to me by another mechanic (who didn't service Mazdas), and I thought that was a pretty good recommendation! As a woman who doesn't know much about cars, I had a lot of positive experiences with LAD and I felt they treated me and my car fairly and respectfully. I had a few problems fixed there without incident (spark plugs replaced, oil changes, body work after I was hit by another car). I tend to be a hypochondriac about my car, but they always took me seriously and never suggested outrageous services. Prices seemed a little high, but I don't mind paying a little extra for quality service. However the last time I took my car there would be the last time ever. I brought it in because it was shaking pretty seriously, even when in neutral. They told me a fan belt needed replacing, and it seemed that it was about that time, so that seemed fair. But when I got my car back, the shaking hadn't reduced at all. I brought it to another mechanic (Garber Automotive) who told me 3 (of 4) motor mounts needed replacing, and that's why my car was shaking so badly. They told me it was a pretty obvious problem when they saw my car, and when they replaced the motor mounts, lo and behold! The car stopped shaking! I'm disappointed in LAD for not fixing the problem and not testing my car to even see if their work had solved the problem. We were traveling back from a dog show when our vehicle broke down on I70 just west of Lawrence....84+ degrees and stuck on the side of the freeway with 4 dogs which could have been a disaster. We got towed to Lawrence Automotive who lived up to their motto 'We stand behind our work, and WE CARE'.....not only did they take our vehicle in as soon as we got there (at 3 pm on a Friday), they put a fan on our dogs (in car) while in the service bay, they drove us to a nearby restaurant while a part was being brought in from Topeka and they had our vehicle fixed and ready to go before 5 PM. After bringing my Blazer here for an oil change, I was told there were major repairs needed, to the tune of 1500 dollars! And that the truck wasn't safe to drive. I told them to stop right now and give me my truck, I then took it to another shop that said there was nothing wrong, changed my oil and its been running great since! Stay away!!!! Our car broke down, so we took it to them as they were the closest shop and were looking to save money on a tow. They notified us that they were needing to replace the water pump, which is what we were thinking. Our car has the water pump in the middle of the engine, so we were expecting a little bit of a higher price. But they came back with a $2600 bill!! Everything we saw online was showing anywhere between $900 to $1200... So, a little overpriced, but whatever, it would have been more of an ordeal to go to another shop at this point. So, we approved the work as we didn't think we had another option. I spoke with someone who knows prices a bit better, and they were just flabbergasted by that amount.. But reluctantly we went forward. While talking with this individual, it was mentioned that we should have them look at replacing the timing chain and inspecting the thermostat as those are both right there and is good to have it replaced with it having 150K miles on it. LAD came back with an extra $1200 for just those two parts!! So now, we're up to 4K for something that a second opinion can get it done for $1500!!!! They were nice enough on the phone, but that's when they thought they were getting a chunk of change out of us... After I told them to hold off on the work, I got "I don't know what you want me to do... if we put it back together (enough to transport to another shop), it will be about 2/3 of the work, so might as well have us do all of the work." Both attitude and verbiage changed real quick... When we got there to pick it up, THEY HAD IT SITTING ON 2X4s... They didn't even do what they told me they were going to do!!! Then they ended up charging me $900 to walk away. If you're lucky enough to see this review before going, please go somewhere else that won't price gouge you. Edit: Alright, so now that I've got another (trusted) mechanic to look at it. He informs there is metal in the engine so it appears something broke off and made its way through. I'm now replacing the entire motor because it is shot. LAD should have seen this and recommended the same. But it appears they were going to replace the water pump and send me on my way with a wrecked engine. As an aside, I got my replacement engine from LKQ and they said they won't deal with LAD because of their reputation. SO PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!! I'm getting a new engine and the cost of labor to replace it cheaper than their quote to just replace the water pump... read more

I came to LAD after having difficulties starting my car and the problem band-aided by another mechanic, replacing the battery. LAD found a computer module needed replacing in Jan 19 for which I paid $1700. Less than 60 days later, the same problem is back, intermittently not starting. LAD says the battery (my 3rd in 9 a year) is bad and because it wasn't bad, by their testing, in Jan, it needs to be replaced, $300. My reply - that's not logical.... if the battery was being drained but you've fixed it, why is the battery now dead? Less than a week later, SAME PROBLEM. These guys trust their computers at the price of logic. I traded the car rather than have them continue to take my money while looking for the real source of the problem. :-( read more

The employees at Lawrence Auto. Diagnostics are definitely very friendly, and they give the impression that they're only interested in what's best for your car. That's great if you're just taking your car there for periodic oil changes, and maybe an occasional tune-up. However, the second something goes wrong, they'll be the last to admit responsibility. When my car had roughly 160k miles on it, the factory catalytic converter started giving out. I had it replaced at Lawrence Auto Diagnostics, to the tune of around $1,000. Less than two years and less than 30k miles later, the converter failed. (If you do a quick web search, you'll see that this is FAR from normal.) However, this is not the main reason for the 1-star review I'm giving these guys. I could imagine a good shop, upon learning that the converter they installed less than two years earlier just failed, would offer to look into possible explanations for this, and maybe even offer a discount at replacing the converter again (as, again, converters are meant to last well over 100,000 miles). When I called Lawrence Auto. Diagnostics, however, and asked them why this could've happened, they rudely said, "Well, ya know, sometimes you buy a refrigerator and it breaks a year later. That's just the way it goes." They refused to do anything for me (other than install another converter for another $1000). Before this incident, I recommended Lawrence Auto. Diagnostics to a friend. He told me they recommended LOTS of repairs (i.e., over $2000 worth) to his car. Being smarter than I am, he decided to take his car somewhere else, where they performed roughly $600 of repairs. This was 5 years ago, and his car is still running fine (and he hasn't had anywhere near the level of repairs they suggested in the interim). So, if you enjoy spending money on unnecessary things and if you hate people who stand behind their work, maybe Lawrence Auto. Diagnostics is for you. Otherwise, I'd recommend going elsewhere. read more

STAY AWAY!! Horrible service. I went in to get my alignment fixed, then magically when I went to pick up my Jeep, the windshield wipers didn't work anymore (never had an issue with them before). I was then told I would need to get a new windshield wiper motor at a cost of ~$500.00. When this was finished, I asked for my old windshield wiper motor, as it was my property. They told me it was theirs now, and refused to return to me a part that was just in MY vehicle. Please get quotes from other shops before going forward with these guys!! read more

I took my car in to these guys because it kept dying, and after a day of working on it, they claimed to have solved the issue and also (with my permission) replaced my rear brake pads and rotor, as well as my windshield wipers. A week later, my car died again, so I took it back and they fixed it for free, and for good this time. When I retrieved the car after-hours, however, I realized two things: 1. That my wipers hadn't actually been replaced (I know because there was still glue on them that I'd applied several months beforehand) 2. The Vehical Stability Assistance light was lit up on my dashboard and wouldn't turn off. I had to wait another week to take it in, but in the end they got the light to turn off and actually replaced my wipers this time, again for free. I should mention that their initial attempt at "solving" the issue of my car repeatedly dying was to disable the car's bluetooth settings and replace my battery entirely, something for which I was charged an absurd amount of money even though it didn't end up solving the issue at all. My only concern at this point is that, when looking over the footage (of this most recent visit) from my dashcam (which automatically activates when the car starts), there is clear audio of the mechanics complaining about me repeatedly bringing my car back over the course of 3 weeks (something I only did because they caused the issues, and they "forgot" to replace my wipers while still charging me for them). Oh, and there's also video of them driving my car recklessly and slamming on the brakes in an attempt to scare each other, as well as audio of one of them calling me a f*cker. So, take from that what you will, but I'm certainly never returning here. They're outrageously overpriced as well. read more

Most recently I brought my truck in telling them I think I need a new clutch (Goodyear Service told me I did, gave me a quote of $950), LAD bled they lines, added some fluid, and said it's fine; cost $60! I received estimates for a variety of services that my car needed. In total, LAD wanted to charge me a sum of $2200. After reaching out to different shops around the area and back home (Chicago) I was able to find another shop that did all of the needed work for a total of $600. I got all of the work done at another reputable shop and so far, everything in my car has been running great. I assume LAD regularly gets away with high maintenance costs, luckily I was able to avoid their scheme. Writing another review because my last one was erased for some reason. I feel so strongly against taking your car here I am taking the time to write another review. This place charges $100 for a diagnostic check, first off any autoparts store will do that for free. They are lazy, did not call me for three days and said they couldnt get ahold of me. I do have voicemail. They are dishonest, they told me I needed a new engine for $5000 for I should sell my car for whatever I could get. After paying them a $100 for this service I took it to Mass St auto and got my car back the same day, coolant resovoir $326. STAY AWAY, I would sooner let a monkey bang on my car with a wrench than ever take my car back there again. I will forever blasphemy their dishonest establishment. I wrote them to refund my money, no response but as soon as I write a scathing review here's Danny on the message boards apologizing but neither offering compensation nor a discount of any kind. read more

If you're a woman or a college-looking student, this place is a huge NOPE! I have had problems in the past after moving to Lawrence with mechanics/repair shops. It seems to me that the people that run these shops see this college aged woman needing help and probably thinking that it would be easy to get me to overpay on a small repair. So I took my car here two days ago after my car started shaking and the check engine light came on. I had a sneaking suspicion that it was a spark plug. So I called, made an appointment and told them I thought it was probably a spark plug. I took my car in, everyone was friendly, and told them to call me before they made any kind of repairs. The next day I called to check up on my car since they had not called me yet. They said that I needed a new spark plug, along with wires, and with a TON of other repairs. I specified that I wanted the bare minimum, knowing full well what they were doing. For just spark plug replacements they quoted me a price of $302!!!!! Are you kidding me?! So I had my Dad call other places (heaven forbid if they hear a woman on the phone) and get quotes for the same exact repair. I got quotes from $90 to $130. I picked up my car that same day and drove it back to my place. My dad changed all my spark plugs for less than $50 and also can replace the wires them to for way less. I can't help but feel violated over and over again by these repair shops trying to make an easy buck. Especially on the someone who is vulnerable and doesn't know much about cars. What makes me sick is that this is not the first time I had taken my car here. I mindlessly had trusted them before and I cannot imagine how much I have overpaid. I will not be returning to this shop. If possible I will wait to have all repairs done back in my hometown, simply cannot trust these shops in Lawrence anymore. read more
