Sunday afternoon and a friend noticed I had a screw in my right front tire. OMG! I commute for my job and had to leave my house at Dark Thirty the next morning. Could not believe my bad luck with the screw. I was panicked. What in the world was I going to do? Thankfully, my friend suggested that I take my car to Westside 66. I actually looked at him like he was crazy because it was a Sunday afternoon. He assured me they were still open. I have to confess that I did not entirely believe him. LOL. He said, "They can fix it in 10 minutes and it will cost you about $16." Yeah, right. So I headed Westside 66 and kept my fingers crossed. The cashier told me to pull around back and they would look at the tire. Honestly, within ten minutes... the tire was fixed and it cost $16. I could not believe my good luck on finding this place. The mechanic who worked on my tire was nice, professional and he knew exactly what to do to get me fixed. He did not waste time with small talk and he got me right on my way. The cashier was very nice and courteous. She, too, was professional and very helpful. I appreciate her guidance. I asked her if they had been busy and she said it was a slow day for them. It was hard to believe it was a slow work day because both bays were filled and other cars were lined up for service. I will definitely go back to this station for service. Regarding owner Rich Haig of Westside 66 in Lawrence, KS, I had a nightmare experience there and I wouldn't recommend this place at all. I went in to get the window motor replaced on my car and his mechanic left my car key turned in the ignition, with the dash lights on, and didn't come back for like 20 minutes. I was walking around, waiting for the repair to get done, and I heard the beeping in my car and went over and saw the dash lights on and that the mechanic was gone. I was aware he had been gone a long time and was worried this would wear the battery down in my car. I waited a few minutes and then finally I took the key out. I waited to see if the mechanic returned but he did not and I even thought he may have went to lunch, he was gone so long. I found him inside the gas station casually talking to someone. I find this irresponsible. I respectfully complained about this to owner, Rich Haig, and he became angry, didn't believe me and ordered me off his property, telling me to wait on the sidewalk, off his property, like I did something wrong, although I did not. When I didn't stand on the sidewalk but stood about 400-500 feet away, silently, waiting for my car to be put back together, Rich wouldn't allow the mechanic to finish - and I had to call the police. When they came, they spoke with Rich first who made it look like I was in the mechanic's way, which I was not. Vindictively, for my calling the police, Rich had the police no trespass me, as if I did something wrong, although I did not. The police did so but were sympathetic with me and even advised me to report this to the Better Business Bureau. This owner, Rich, is a jackass and if he thinks you're getting service from him and it's paid by a social service, he may disrespect you. What responsible mechanic leaves a key turned in an ignition (causing the dash lights to come on) and walks away for 20 minutes -- and what responsible owner would respond the way that Rich Haig did? While car problems are never good, the place made it a simple and quick process and I had my car back the next day. They're open pretty late so having it towed after work was not a problem. To make sure the context of this review is clear, I have worked many customer service jobs, so I understand exactly how challenging it can be and try to be as fair and patient as possible when I am on the customer side of an interaction. However, this is the worst customer service I have received in my life. I took my car in almost two months ago because it was making noises and had heard that they do free diagnostic services. After several days and no call back (the receptionist had never written down my phone number for some reason), they told me that both the wheel bearings and axle bearings needed to be replaced, as well as the front tires, and gave me an estimate. I called them back in the morning after discussing payment with my mother (who I share the car with) and told them we wanted them to fix it. For some reason, someone understood we only wanted the axle bearings replaced and so we had to bring it back two weeks later to get the rest fixed. At this point it was still making noise but the mechanic assured me he would make sure it was no longer making noise when he was done. When we brought the car back, they couldn't find the appointment we had made, but they "fixed it" fairly quickly this time. We were very excited that it would finally be running well again and I started driving to work, only to discover less than five minutes after I started driving it that it was still making the exact same noise. I waited until the next day to call because I know that dealing with upset customers is very difficult. They told me to bring it in and "give them a drive" so they could hear the noise themselves. My schedule at work was too busy to do this for another week but when we did a full week ago, the mechanic (possibly the head mechanic?) said he would look at it as soon as possible and let us know. Again, they forgot to make an appointment for this and also failed to call us (I only received one call during this entire process and many promises of a call back), so my mother finally went in today while I was at work and was told the actual problem is the real differential. Fixing it would cost us around $1000. We had already spent almost $800 for the previous repairs. At this point, we don't even trust them enough to be sure that is the real problem. I am a young woman trying to support myself and my mother, who's on disability, currently only on a retail salary, and I have seldom felt so disrespected and ripped off by a business. This place I used to be able to trust. Took my car on because it was running rough, and it would die in me, there was also knocking on the engine, something you couldn't miss. I Alison had s seal battery. Head it towed in, they had it for a the evening and pay off the next day. They said nothing was wrong with it except I had a bad battery. They said they didn't hear anything and everything was ok. I pick up my car and is dog the same thing. I called and talk to Rich the owner and he stuck to the story. Now I have to take it somewhere else. I am a single parent and can't afford to get screwed around. I will never go back there again. read more

It's place was great. The staff is very friendly and the prices are cheap for your quick fixes. My daughter is a college student in Lawrence. I recently had my air conditioning go out in my car. I took it in to Big O Tires on 6th St for an estimate, as I have been going there for car repairs for the last year and a half since I have lived in Lawrence, and they said the compressor had failed and needed replaced. Their quote was nearly $1700. I started calling around elsewhere. I called Westside 66 on 6th St. and he gave me a quote for $1100. It ended up costing only $670 altogether! Sadly I worry that all of the car repairs I have had done on my car and my son's car I was probably overcharged at Big O Tires. I will never take my car to Big O Tires ever again and will definitely be going back to Westside 66. read more

Friday afternoon after 5 p.m. and my car had a flat tire. AAA recommended Westside 66. When I inquired if they could fit me in, the woman who answered the phone was efficient, friendly, and courteous. She also gave me excellent directions. The mechanic came out to meet me, directed me around back, found out what had happened, and immediately started fixing my tire. He was respectful, kind, and capable. If it took 10 minutes, I would be surprised. Hopefully I won't need to come back soon, but when I do and if anyone I know has a flat, Westside 66 is the place I will recommend. Would not recommend to anyone. After I took my car in, a friend of mine told me how she took her car there and got a quote. The final bill ended up being double what they originally quoted her. I went to pick up my bill and sure enough, my bill was close to double what they quoted me. Just be prepared for a bill higher than what they origianlly quote. read more

I went to Westside 66 after my car hit 100,000 miles and the place where I got an oil change told me I had about $450 of maintenance that needed to be done to my car. They told me they would check it out and see if I actually needed all that work done. After thoroughly inspecting my vehicle, they called to let me know that none of the things I was told needed to be done, actually needed to be done. I was charged $0 for their time and inspection. Since when is getting your car fixed fun? Well, it is at Westside 66! And their work is as great as their attitude! I brought in my car to fix a failed DIY project (during which I had dropped an expensive and invaluable part and wasn't even sure if it was still in the housing or out on the street somewhere). Two mechanics (one of which doesn't even work there anymore; he was just visiting) took finding and retrieving this part as a fun challenge and wouldn't give up. Well, they found it and successfully completed the whole project. At this point it's usually a shop's cue to charge an arm and a leg for a job well done, right? But, not Richard (the owner) -- he couldn't have been more fair. His team's amazing work ethic and customer service is obviously a reflection of Richard's expertness and generosity of spirit. I can't say enough about this place. I am in the customer service business and they are every bit of what customer service was when I was growing up and what I have my staff doing. I am also a father in the Chicago area with a daughter going to KU. Of course her last semester at KU she starts to have car issues. AAA came out during graduation weekend to get her car started and the driver recommended to me to go Westside 66. Said it was a place he would trust for his kids cars too. I called and got pricing and then checked with my mechanic and he said that they had great pricing. They replaced the starter and gave the car a good look over and sent her on her way without breaking her piggy bank. Today, I asked my daughter to swing by and ask if they could check her fluids and tires before she heads back to Chicago for Grad School. They had no problem with her just walking in. They checked everything, topped off the coolant, and checked the tires. They had a little trouble with the hood latch and fixed that for her. All of that and it cost me less than a small coffee at Starbucks. Being so far away from me, it is very comforting to know that she was well taken care of and not taken advantage of.
