So I had my first cavity and I was scared... This place is State-of-the-Art and the only reason I am able to go here is because my step mom works here.. its like super expensive only the ritziest San Diegans go here... I think the Volkswagen Metro Man gets his teeth cleaned here...I know, thats high society. Any who, I had this cavity and they were getting ready to drill so I asked "aren't you going to use some anesthetic or something?" and the dentist said "oh no, its painless, we don't even use drills.. we use a laser, you wont even feel it" ...THEY USE LASERS INSTEAD OF DRILLS!!!!! So I got my tooth drilled with a laser and now I feel like a new man. I had old restorations on my two front teeth that I've had since age 14, thanks to a face plant to the ground brought on by my thoughtful brothers! 14 years later it was about time to get them replaced. I am a model and professional surfer and really depend on my teeth and smile! That being why I became so self conscious over my bad restorations and not having the courage to have them replaced. I had visited many dentists and I saw the same thing over and over. Huge white bulky looking teeth, too perfect. Not for me. Landau, DDS, who recently joined The Art of Dentistry. He's that good. Dr. Landau is leagues ahead of other dentists I've been to in terms of his knowledge of cutting edge dentistry, his use of next generation materials and technology, and his skill level. The man is a Picasso with a dental drill. His drive for perfection would be almost maddening if it didn't result in such beautiful and painless work. This dental practice is fully focused on snazzy marketing. You'll notice their expensive color spreads in San Diego Magazine and the like. Not so focused on the care of their patients. I paid top dollar for Dr. Addleson to correct a bond on a front tooth. He did a beautiful job matching the color and shape of the other teeth. I was admiring his beautiful dental work in my bathroom mirror the next afternoon. The materials he used for the bond repair were chipping right off. Way too brittle to give a lasting repair on a front tooth. They finally refunded the cost of the lousy repair. but not without an attitude. I'm also not too impressed by the arrogance of some of their front office staff. Parking is in their building but it can be tricking pulling out. read more

UPDATE: I found out that they have changed their policy and now accept insurance without needing to pay in advance. Which makes me a happy camper! You used to have to pay up front & then get reimbursed by your insurance company, which was kind of a pain. I love this place! In 2007, I decided that I wanted to fix up my teeth before my wedding. I'd had root canals on three of my front teeth and they'd become discolored over time, as a result, something that couldn't be bleached away. I did my homework & discovered the American Association of Cosmetic Dentistry. When I looked up their members in my area, I found out that a past president of the AACD was practically right down the street from me. Name? Dr. Addleson. Location? The Art of Dentistry. After my first meeting with him, I came away thinking: Dr. Addleson is awesome! Thanks to him, I am now the proud owner of 4 crowns & 2 veneers that look so much like real teeth NO ONE has been able to tell the difference. I went here for a dental cleaning recently, and the experience was much more than I expected. The facility itself was gorgeous, although the energy felt very "Hollywood;" but maybe that's because they treat you like a movie star there. I received the best and most thorough cleaning and evaluation of my teeth...ever. I have never had a dentist in all my years that I have ever wanted to recommend to someone else until now. This experience was exceptional and I am willing to pay the bit more for out of network coverage for the value gained from this level of service. I was able to complete the majority of my new patient paperwork electronically and submit it all before I even got to the office. This is huge, in that I've had many experiences where I've not been able to complete the paperwork as thoroughly as I'd like due to filling it out right before, in the office. The office was spacious, clean, and I might even say swanky. The front desk peeps were cheerful, and all welcomed me individually as a new patient. The assistant was interested in getting to know me on a personal level which helped ease me in to the experience, as I am typically not the most comfortable in the dentist chair... which theirs evidently has massage features. They are quite aware these can be painful experiences and offer noise canceling headphones and a way to listen to music or watch movies. All great gestures toward making people as comfortable as possible for such potentially painful work. I was impressed. Dr Campbell was extremely knowledgeable, patient, concerned with answering my questions fully and talking to me in ways that suited my personality. I was given a complimentary set of x-rays, which were supplemented with exterior photography with a DSLR camera and and in-mouth camera to get close ups of various parts of the enamel. This was all used as reference to show me exactly what was wrong with my teeth and how it would be corrected. He stays up to date in bleeding edge research and referred me to several other specialists for evaluation and perhaps treatment to decrease my cavity rate and even improve my sleep! I was wholly satisfied with the experience and definitely recommend this practice if you can afford it. YEAR LATER UPDATE: After having numerous cleanings, treatments and fillings with this practice, I stand by everything I've said. The hygenist and dentist combined have helped me reach a point where I no longer get cavities. They have shown that they deeply care about improving my oral and physical health by working with me to devise a routine that I can reasonably accomplish on a daily basis. I have had products recommended to me that treatments performed that no other dentist has recommended. This tells me two things: that all involved do indeed stay up to date in treatments that work, and that my other providers have withheld suggestions because they did not think I'd be willing to pay for them. For the first few cleanings, I left with a page full of notes on how I can better improve my hygiene routine. Numerous techniques and products were recommended so that I could experiment and integrate the things that I found easiest to use. If I ever have a question, I can email the office and receive a response. If you care about your oral health enough to want to finally fix the problem of developing cavities, and don't mind paying for more treatment than is covered by insurance to achieve that, I highly recommend this practice! read more

I hadn't had my teeth cleaned in years so you can imagine the amount of junk that was on my teeth. Darcie took her sweet time and was extremely patient with me. This entire team is amazeballs and I am extremely satisfied with the friendliness and impeccable customer service this team provides. I have also reviewed this business under their biz name: "The Art of Dentistry". I just want to say that Dr. Addleson is really the best in San Diego. I'm really amazed at how great my teeth look, and really happy that I selected him to do the work. I had poor bonding that over the years just continued to look worse and worse. They were the wrong shape and size, and frankly it made me really self-conscious of my smile. After meeting Dr. Addleson, he explained what the issue was. (They were originally done by my dentist, who is not a cosmetic dentist, just a general dentist.) He explained how the eye is drawn to the unevenenss, the mis-matching, the funny shapes, the gum line etc. He took a photo of my teeth, and then using a pen, diagrammed on the photo how they could look. After that, I felt really confident he could fix my teeth because it was clear he understood how and where to fix them. I ended up selecting porcelain crowns instead of just re-bonding. I was a little worried that they would look too perfect, which would make them look fake, but Dr. Addleson worked with me to get the exact right shape, color, and even proportion to the size of my mouth, and face. I'm really impressed with what he was able to do. It was expensive, but in my opinion, worth every penny. I have a beautiful smile that I'm really proud of, and because they are porcelain, they are really going to look fantastic for years and years. You can go into his office and look at his work in the books he has on his coffee tables in the lobby. There are tons of before and after photos. You will be amazed at the final results. He has free parking underneath his office, so it's really convenient. The staff are very professional, and very sweet. Most of all, Dr. Addleson is just super to work with. He's got a great personality, he's really sharp, and he's never going to steer you wrong. I remember thinking at one point, 'jeez, this guy is more concerned with the final result than I am.' My first Yelp review ever and worth every minute it takes to write this, as it's the only way I know how to show my gratitude. I'm going to preface by saying I'm a freak about my teeth and hard to please... and that I started writing this two weeks ago, forgot about it, and am coming back to finish it because I'm just that pleased with Dr. Campbell's care, attention to detail and expertise. I was referred to Dr. Campbell TWICE by my orthodontist (who knows what a perfectionist I am) after I chipped my two front teeth. It took me NINE MONTHS to build up the courage to make an appointment. I was SCARED, as my fiancé recently had one of his front teeth veneered by a different dentist and I thought it looked "thick" and didn't match the other front tooth perfectly. I chose to live with my little chips for so long (even though I was embarrassed of them) because I was too afraid to have them "fixed" and not like the result. I was pleasantly surprised when Dr. Campbell spent so much time with me during my initial consultation. He was patient and didn't hurry me along whatsoever. I felt like he would sit and talk for two hours if I needed him to. I was still weary going in to the next appointment (when my teeth were to be fixed) because I was trusting a STRANGER with something that can't necessarily be "undone" if messed up! I had an extremely traumatizing dental experience that turned me off to dentists. I read about Dr Addleson and decided I would be able to trust him due to the great reviews he received. The staff was friendly and helpful as I suffer from EXTREME anxiety. He took xrays and listened to my story. I was nervous/anxious & scared. He tried to soothe me comparing my trauma to being raped. That didn't soothe me. His intention was only positive, I know. He gave me some recommendations to get a tooth pulled & get my implant removed. I got the implant removed and had to have a bone graft also. Incredibly frightening but Dr Tim Smith was recommended and he was great. When it was time to go pull another tooth, it was scary to me and I put it off a month. I also made some nervous/lame joke about the other dentist who hurt me, which maybe Dr Addleson read the wrong way - I am from NYC so sometimes people think I'm serious when I'm being sarcastic.... or if it's just jitters. Later that same month, I got a certified letter from Dr. Addleson stating that he would not treat me. There was no reason stated. I assume it was be because I didn't follow his instructions fast enough for him, or that he was afraid of me due to my dumb joke. I was crushed. I was crying. I finally summoned the nerve to take care of my dental health, which he knew was took me 7 years to do & was a terrifying thing for me, and was turned away. A few years later, I got the courage to try going to a dentist again. Searched around but decided to see if Dr. Addelson would consider treating me again. The front desk transferred me to his wife who told me "No, you've already been dismissed as a patient and we don't take people back for any reason." I really don't know why this happened to me or why I'm not welcome as a patient since he told me to my face he was going to help me & seemed sincere in wanting me to be healthy & happy. I summoned up a lot of courage to do contact him & show up. This experience made me pull back even further from getting dental treatment. I haven't seen a dentist since then. I'm afraid they'll say they'll help, but will just turn me away when I am relying on them to help me. I hope no one who has had a bad dental experience and who hopes to correct that with Dr. Addleson ever has an experience like mine or ever gets a certified letter stating you are not welcome there like I did. read more

"I hope you like pudding." I will never forget those words. Suffering from TMJ which had become debilitating to me, and was referred to Dr. Addleson. In my initial visits I was seen by a specialist (referred by Dr. A) who did specialized X-rays, which were later sent to Dr. Addleson. It appears, however, that he read the wrong X-rays, as I was initially told that the TMJ damage was not severe. However, my second visit he came into the private office and said those words, along with, "I hope you don't like steak." It had turned out he had viewed the wrong X-rays and now that he had seen mine, there was quite a bit of jaw damage, which of course made sense given the degree of pain and issue I was having. In between visits I received a mouthguard from another dentist (seeking any kind of relief), which he asked to see, (and was not happy about). When I showed him the $5,000 piece, he said, 'hmmm, not very impressive." I have learned so much about TMJ, how cosmetic dentists have been trained that this is a disorder of the bite and teeth, without ever tying in the underlying anxiety that causes clenching, etc. or at least integrating this into a holistic approach. My reason for writing this after having a few years gone by, as I will never forget the lack of empathy demonstrated during such a difficult time, and down right arrogance. I hope this helps future patients who are having challenges to be treated in a more humane way. read more

I highly recommend this place--especially Dr Larry Addleson. He is truly an expert and really knows his stuff. Plus he's just a wonderful, calm, easy-going person who really seemed to care about me and my teeth and made a very long appointment feel like it sped by, with NO pain! I heard that he actually teaches other dentists how to do excellent cosmetic work and they apparently come from all over the world to learn from the Master. If you want to greatly improve your smile this is the only place to go in my opinion. I had 10 teeth veneered/crowned and I'm amazed at how many compliments I get on how I look. People don't know what's different about me--they think I lost weight (no, not yet!), or changed my hair (not!), or look rested (yeah, right), and I find myself smiling all the time now. I went back a month later to get Invisalign (like adult braces but you can't see them) done on my lower teeth, which have always been quite crooked. Dr. Doug Campbell did the work for me and in just 6 months I have straight teeth at last (should've had them when I was 15)!! Dr Campbell is also wonderful and really took a lot of time to explain everything to me. It all was very easy and I'm so glad I did it. The people who work there are very very nice and really warm and welcoming. They made me feel like a part of the family. I tried to make an appointment here for a consultation. The lady who answered the phone asked if I would be utilizing any type of insurance. I told her of my insurance carrier which she said they don't accept (I figured that much, most DDS's don't accept insurance). When I asked her what types of insurance they accept she stated that they only accept PPO insurance of which, they are not an in network provider....so basically they don't accept any insurance? She then said that she would go ahead and provide me with the number to the Ca Dental Society so that I can find a dentist that was in network. I was highly offended by this and told her that if it was necessary that I find an in network provider then by all means, give me the phone number so I can take my business elsewhere. Her response was 'no it's not necessary to have an in network provider but you need to know that any services we provide would have to be paid for out of pocket'. She wasn't rude when she made the assumption that I didn't have enough money to pay for my dental work....which, being cosmetic in nature, I am well aware that my expenses will be out of pocket and have budgeted accordingly. Maybe she should have asked my employment status and hourly wage before determining whether or not I was fit to be a privileged client? Having nice teeth may be a luxury only a select few can afford but until I share with you my bank account number, don't ASSUME anything about my ability to pay. read more

I couldn't be more pleased with the EXCEPTIONAL care I received by Dr. Landau and his amazing staff! When I found myself needing to replace my two front crowns, I researched cosmetic dentists and relied on the great Yelp reviews to pick The Art of Dentistry. Those 5 stars are well earned! Dr. Landau really, really, really listened to all of my requests and how I wanted my new crowns to look and feel. His main concern was my gum health so we had to take a few months to make absolutely sure that my new crowns were going into a healthy environment. During that time I had to wear temporary crowns that he made based on photos I brought of how I wanted to look. The temporaries were just a template for the crowns, but they felt so much better than my old crowns. Dr. Landau also made many adjustments to them over the waiting period to help me get used to the look and help me decide how I wanted the crowns to look and feel. Dr. Landau was so patient, kind, funny and had great energy that relaxed me in to knowing that I was being treated with the utmost care. When we got closer to making the crowns, Dr. L sent me to San Diego Aesthetic Dental studio to meet with Hakjoo who would be making my crowns. I gave her many pictures and we talked about what I wanted. She also really, really, really listened. She allowed me to come preview the crowns when she got them made and we talked about some more adjustments. On the day of the crown cementing, I was sent to her again to try them on and make absolutely sure I liked them. She made a few more adjustments for me and then I went back to A of D to put them in. This part was really scary to me because I wasn't sure how my gums would grow and if they would end up looking the way I wanted them to when they healed. It has now been about 6 weeks and I can say that I really, really, really love my new crowns! I was after a look that more closely resembled the teeth I was born with, before they grew super crooked. So basically, we were combining the looks of several stages in my life to match how I wished my teeth had grown. Hakjoo and I had a joke that I wanted my teeth to look like they came out of my head! I do think she achieved that look and I feel the teeth blend nicely with my existing teeth, which are not super straight or perfect. If you are looking for any cosmetic dental work, I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Landau! I'm sure all the dentists at the A of D are fantastic, but I didn't work with them. Dr. Landau really knows what he's doing and your health and happiness are his main concerns. The dental lab they use is exceptional with great attention to detail to make crowns look really real. I have been going to Art of Dentistry for so many years I cannot remember how long! I cannot say enough about this practice! Dr. Campbell and his assistant Angie are not only have passion and are the best at what they do, but a kindness and generosity of heart that is rarely found in the professional world today I trust the work they do and know that they use the best possible labs to make sure you aren't getting replacement work done down the road. Case and point, I have a gold onlay that has been in for 15+ years from Dr. Campbell that is outstanding and a crown done 3 years ago from another dentist (because I was living in SF at the time) with disappointing results. They listen to your concerns and take the time to carefully explain your treatment plan and options. DO NOT hesitate to see Dr. Campbell and his hygiene staff! I've been going to art of dentistry for over two years now; seeing Dr. Doug Campbell. Everyone is great, receptionists, hygienists, assistants. Recommended for anyone getting a cleaning, a filling, or lots of work done. They are very good at making you feel comfortable on all visits, short or long, explaining what will be done, what are the options and how it affects your dental health long term. They don't use outdated materials, like old-school Army dentists, or pressure you into getting unnecessary treatment, like the greedy local chain dentists I went to before (SmileCare in Chula Vista). One DDS left me with three holes in my mouth for three days because the root canals kept bleeding (Healthy Smiles in National City). Turns out I could've saved those teeth from root canals, had i gone to Art of Dentistry before. Dr. Campbell aims to conserve as much healthy tooth as possible, while balancing function and looks. I don't remember feeling pain during any of the visits. He calls in the evening to check on you if your procedure involved anesthesia, which was funny-weird the first time. They refer you to specialists, if needed. I saw Dr. Masters in Chula Vista, who fixed the previous endodontic job for a hefty price (so pay now once, or pay twice correcting bad work, not to mention the pain and wasted time). While working in Afghanistan for two years, the staff helped me plan dental visits to fit into my vacation time. They even rushed the lab to get my crown done in record time so I wouldn't leave with the tin piece of crap that the previous dentist gave me as a temporary crown. Now that I'm back, I'm almost finished with my Invisalign treatment, also done by them. Soon I won't need to see them as often, which is what every dentist's goal should be. read more

Dr. Addleson and his partners have raised the bar on dentistry. My husband is half way through Dr. A. replacing his 2 front teeth due to an accident. This practice is committed to perfection and customer service. No one will ever detect the new teeth are anything other than natural. The Art of Dentistry is a fabulous office with one of the most professional staffs I have ever encountered. The practice was willing to allow me, as a future Dental Hygiene student, to observe an entire day in the office. Each staff member was friendly, influential, and seemed genuinely happy to have me there. Dr. Landau along with the Hygienist Darcie Bell whom I shadowed for the day had a brilliant rapport with all of the patients seen that day. I felt that I learned a lot and now I can see what a truly great practice is made of, that is patient care, dental expertise, and overall impeccable treatment. Every patient I witnessed was happy when they entered and happy when they left. I believe that's what truly counts when you are in the profession dedicated to smiles! If you're looking for an office that will get to know you, make you feel at home, and give you the healthy smile you aspire to show the world than I highly recommend making an appointment. This office is completely unprofessional. I called to make an appointment as a new patient and the only questions I received were, "Who referred you?, Did you use google or yahoo? What words did you type into google? " I found this to be extremely unprofessional and very apparent that their priority is getting new clientele, rather than assisting current clients. I was then transferred AGAIN to another receptionist, Debbie, who has zero people skills and couldn't wait to tell me that they were not the office for me. This is after she asked me the same fifteen questions about how I found the office and what words did I type in to google and on and on. All I wanted to do was schedule an appointment as a new client for myself and my husband, but I couldn't even make it that far. Debbie was only concerned with how new business was being brought their way, rather than getting me an appointment. So after ten minutes of google talk, I realized I would NEVER step foot into this office. Terrible, terrible customer service.
