Pineapple with vanilla ice cream at the bottom. 2. Purple Hibiscus (vanilla, grape, Hawaiian punch) 3. Small convenience store similar to ABC stores. What makes this place special is their soft serve. I only tried it once on my trip and the soft serve was a little on the soft side. We ordered the soft serve pineapple ice cream for $6.99 and once we walked out and put our spoon in the cup we noticed that inside the swirl of ice cream was all air. But there's no sign for pickup and there's registers everywhere. So 90% of people walking in for shave ice stand in the pick up line. Well I SHOULD knock down a star for the rude clerk that yelled at me and said no pictures in the store as I filmed my shave ice being made... and then proceeded to order my sister and I to move out of her way as she swept the floor - which I might add will never be clean being only like 20 feet from the sandy beach... Was very excited to find Lawson Station on US soil. Tried out the Lawson egg sandwich since Bourdain raved about it in his Tokyo episode. But I have to admit the sandwich bread used in HNL is slightly harder and a lot more chewy than the ones I've tried from Shinjuku. Price wise, I'd try the ABC stores first. Then Lawson. Then all the other convenient stores. For example a Musubi goes for about $1.29 in ABC while I paid $2.09 at Lawson. Same goes for a large bottle of water. read more

I don't come down to Waikiki too often because the parking sucks. We came to Waikiki tonight for the Hoolaulea. We were thirsty so we stopped by this place to get something to drink. It's in the row of shops by the Moana Surfrider hotel. I've passed by before but it's my first time stepping foot in the store. The store is like a mini mart. They sell drinks, sandwiches, snacks, etc. We left with a Dole Whip cone and a shaved ice. I thought the shaved ice wouldn't be good coming from a store like that. However, I was wrong. The shaved ice was pretty good. The ice was very fine with no chunks of ice in it. The shaved ice machines must be getting better these days. My son ordered it in pineapple and lilikoi. The only problem was that the guy making it didn't put enough syrup. The inside of the shaved ice was white. We had to mix it to blend out the syrup. read more

We literally came here every single day because our resort was right next so we came here for convenience. We bought the hot spam musubi (the one behind their counter) every single day. We didn't want the one in the fridge or the self serve one. We specifically wanted the hot one with soy sauce. One time they ran out. I also got the dole whip here. The kids bought ice cream here many times. I also bought some souvenirs here. My favorite were the keychains that told you what your Hawaii names was. I wish I bought more of those. Great place to stop & get Dole Whip while walking & shopping !! ‍So many shopping and eating places !! I love this area of Waikiki

I was kind of hoping for something more like the ones they have in Japan but I was disappointed. Okay yeah, they had oden and onigiri but that's about it. Nothing set them apart from ABC Store, 7 Eleven or any old hotel convenience store. Even the onigiri and sandwiches were something you could get from just about anywhere on the island. My thoughts about foreign chains when opening up in another country should be 75% your product, 25% local faire. Let's look at McDonald's (an American brand). Wherever they open up, most of their menu is the same as US (except for perhaps in India because of beef) with some local additions like ginger pork in Asia, McEbi in Japan, spaghetti in the Philippines, etc. Lawsons here is basically 95% local faire. I just expected more of what I remember from Japan. There wasn't even an ATM or stationary. Just everything you can find at the ABC Store across the street and less. If they're going through all the trouble of opening up here, they might as well deliver what they're known for otherwise, why bother? Mitsuwa Marketplace is within walking distance and man, that place is like Japan with dollar signs instead of yen signs. They did it right imo. read more

The shaved ice is awesome! Seriously the beat I've ever had anywhere. The flavor is strong and consistent. We also tried the ice cream (pineapple) it was yummy. The pineapple toppings are frozen not fresh just as a heads up. The line is looooooooong! We walked down to this location today because the Lawson Station in our hotel doesnt do shave ice and we wanted some. It wasnt far, 10 minutes if that. I was shocked upon walking in how small, dirty and downright unappealing it was. The one in our hotel is much larger, cleaner and brighter.
