Spent the day at Texas A&M and had to go get Laynes for lunch! One cannot go to CStat and not get lunch at Laynes..Canes and Zaxbys do not compare.. However, I will say that all the chicken tender places since Covid went from their signature large tenders to half size smaller tenders. Not sure why or why they never went back to the larger size tenders after Covid. I ordered a 3 piece and you can see how small the size of the tenders are and I remember when two of the tenders would of equaled 1 tender before Covid. The service was great, the tenders were hot and fresh since made to order and the fries were crunchy. Nothing wrong at all with the service, taste of the food, the only complaint is how tiny the tenders are now. With all that said of course I'll still go to Laynes and glad we have one in Houston by my job. read more

This is the original Layne's born out of College Station. We stopped by on a road trip and decided to compare it to Raising Cane's, Chick-Fil-A, and other competitive fast food chicken strips. Flavor - very nice. I was quite impressed with the texture, breading, and seasoning. It wasn't overly greasy and spice level hit the spot. Temperature: we dined in to experience the freshest chicken strips possible. It did not disappoint. I think I burned the roof of my mouth on the first bite but it was worth it. Presentation: nothing to praise but no complaints either. See the photo and judge for yourself. Ambiance: small and cute. Nothing nice about it but fairly clean. Staff: friendly but not over the top. The verdict: Chick-Fil-A is still #1. Then Layne's. Then Raising Cane's. Yes - in my opinion - Layne's beats Cane's. And all 3 are way better than Whataburger and Dairy Queen. Don't believe me? Apparently this is the original location, and I was excited to visit and try their spicy chicken which was highly recommend. The restaurant is definitely vintage looking and I really appreciated the artwork made by customers attached to the wall next to the tables. The employee was friendly. I ordered the 5 piece meal with Layne's sauce and the Jalapeño ranch. The tenders were slightly smaller than I'm used to, but the chicken was seasoned nicely and the amount of spice was nice. The fries were crispy and the Texas toast was perfectly buttery and soft. The Layne's sauce was very balanced with a nice kick of pepper. The jalapeño ranch had a nice kick that went with the spicy tenders. My diagnosis: solid chicken tenders that are better than Canes! read more

I gotta be honest though, I didn't think the actual chicken fingers were anything special, and I really would have liked some ranch sauce for both the fries and the chicken. Was at Texas A&M for a recruiting event and an alum recommended we stopped by Layne's on our way back to Austin. Similarly to Cane's they offer chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and their own special sauce. Unlike Cane's their chicken, and not just the sauce, had an immense amount of flavor. Their chicken tenders come in two flavors, spicy or regular and I opted for a mixture of both. While I am a spicy fan, expect a KICK when you bite into it. I'm very glad I had some regular to combat the heat. Wish Layne's was more of a chain because I would definitely be there frequently. So my gf has been talking this place up like it was God's gift to humanity for years now. I chalked it up to her Aggie pride and the fact that anything having to do with College Station is the greatest thing since sliced bread to her. I finally got to go and I must say I was impressed. First of all this place uses the freshest all white meat chicken (that is mad tender and juicy) that I have gotten at any chain restaurant hands down. They got the little youngsters (presumably TAMU students or maybe from the local high school) working in there bringing a lot of energy which made the experience more enjoyable. Sauce was fire. Fries crispy. Drinks.... Ummm fountain? My only complaint is that the breading on the chicken fingers doesn't have much flavor or seasoning so the sauce is a must. My husband has been nagging me to try Layne's and I am so glad I finally got the chance to! I went through the drive through on a Friday afternoon, so it wasn't very busy. When ordering I asked if the strawberry milkshake tasted artificial because I'm so picky about my milkshakes. After I pulled up and paid, the kind worker handed me the shake and told me to try it because if I didn't she would get me another flavor. I thought that was so sweet and such great service! The shake tasted like strawberry milk and wasn't too artificial tasting so I kept it. If it had been a little thicker, I definitely would have enjoyed it more. Fantastic. Worlds better than the OTHER CHICKEN JOINT THAT RHYMES WITH LAYNES. Wayyyyyy better price, and did amount than the other joint, and Laynes has better sauce, aaand was first in the area. I'd say the only things Laynes could improve on is branding, and a lil bit more friendly service, but its a low BS joint, and you get your food fairly quick. Love em! read more

For $6.50 you can pick up a large chicken tender box, which includes DELICIOUS potato salad, a piece of toast, 4-5 chicken tenders, fries, and Layne's special sauce. The box is huge and will definitely provide leftovers. The chicken at Layne's is more crispy then at Canes which I particularly love, and you get potato salad opposed to coleslaw which I also prefer. Only downside for me is that the drink is not included in the box combo price, but you can get a large drink for an additional 2.25. Have been going to Layne's since they opened. Have been hundreds of times. Excellent food. However, they have currently stopped using actual fries and switched to extruded fries. I believe they don't realize that there are very few places that still have excellent fries. They had them. Now they don't. Extruded fries are terrible. Like eating a sandpaper facsimile of potatoes.
