So happy to see this addition in Beaverton. When I'm in the mood to go to a brewery I've always driven into downtown Portland, but it's good to know there's now one here in town! Service was friendly and attentive and I felt VERY taken care of by the folks working there. One man in particular, wish I could have gotten his name. Trying Detroit Pizza for the first time I was pretty impressed. I got an 8" to myself was not able to finish because it's actually so pretty thick, but hey now I have leftovers. I also tried their beer milkshake and was very nervous but it ended up being SO good. The interior looks clean and hip & they had a variety of different table options which I thought was thoughtful- including large tables for bigger parties or to share with other smaller parties as well. The purpose of my review of Ex Novo in Beaverton is to give descriptions of the food so that my fellow yelpers understand what they're in for. I wouldn't call this pizza. I would call it cheese bread. This is apparently "Detroit style" pizza so you should not expect a pizza crust. This is a very heavy, oily, thick and dense bread they use as the base of the "pizza" with a little bit of toppings on top... Not enough cheese (although I do love the crispy side-cheese that happens in-between the side of the bread and the baking pan). The tomato sauce is on top of the pizza. It's very fresh and very tomato-y, not too salty or spicy. I sampled four different beers and they were all good. read more

This is a universal truth across the Old Town Beaverton businesses at this point: You're going to get your first drink and your food order in a timely fashion. That second drink and check? Victims of the labor shortage. That last point is no reason to knock an establishment amid the current climate. Ex Novo survived the pandemic cranking out Detroit-style pizzas (Detroit-style means cheese from Wisconsin melted over dough from a pound cake cooked in a pan meant to catch motor oil--it's an outright abomination, but there's far worse in Oregon) and giving people beers to go. Its reward is a packed house even on Sunday nights. Credit Ex Novo for doing the little things right from the beginning: Presenting a big, legible tap list. Using QR codes for menus. Upholstering the seats. They have table service by a small miracle, but they also have a staff so small that your host is also your bartender who's also your server. That presents logistical issues in a busy venue that aren't immediately apparent until you're well into your ticket. Again, they've mastered the art of bringing the first beer as a pacifier. They've also figured out how to maximize each ticket by making sure your food order is in. But anything beyond that? Understandably, they're trying to keep the lights on and the paychecks coming, so once your big ticket items are in, they're going to focus on clearing empty tables, seating new customers and getting food orders in. Right now, you're not going to have a pre-pandemic bar experience at any place on Watson that isn't Big's, and they're counter service. Raindrop is your best bet for a two-pint night, and even they are counting on moderate traffic. Ex Novo was built to handle the worst the pandemic threw at it, but isn't quite ready for "normal." That's OK: The pizza and meatballs keep coming, the taps keep pouring, and the to-go fridge keeps humming. If you want that second beer, I'd suggest taking it to go. Let the servers do an incredibly taxing job without being judged like figure skaters for every slight slip. You folks are greatly appreciated. read more

As a local who lives nearby I am loving seeing spots like this is our bustling downtown. I always get excited to try them out and I am glad they are popular BUT, with that said, I am glad they will do well without my help. I happened to be across the street for Beaverton Night Market and swas in need of some dinner. I thought it was the perfect time to check it out. I am glad I did BUT this is just not for me. First of all, the loudness - legitimately I could not hear myself think. It was packed and WOW I could hear every conversation, all at once in my brain! The table next to me an older married couple who, for some strange reason, wanted to awkwardly stare at me. I am not sure what was so fascinating about me but it was just weird and I was beyond grateful when they finally left. I seriously just ordered a pizza and a ginger ale... The food is bar food. Honestly there is not a lot to their menu - its pizza and I do not know that I would call this pizza. It says Detroit style pizza - I've never even been to Detroit so I know jack about what is or isn't a Detroit thing. All I know is that this was a big, greasy overcooked cake with tomato sauce. The toppings I got (mushrooms, balsamic glaze, onions and chevre) were lovely BUT my god this was like eating a big ball of greasy cake. I was just not prepared. As it was I looked at the menu and anything but pizza was slim pickings and their salads just looked, well, not appealing. Since I do not drink beer I am uncertain if this grease cake thing goes well with beer. Perhaps it does. AND they charge you nearly $20 for it which seems excessive also but I was one person and this gut bomb seems like something to share with a table of people. I was really surprised about this pizza! I had never heard of Detroit style pizza but I am hooked!! I love that the sauce is on top - over all the toppings and the dough is soft and airy. I really loved it. The only downfall is the price. $20 for the Meatzza and I don't feel like that really feeds 2 people. So 1 star off for the price. Continuing our beer tour around portland, Ex Novo was not on the top of our list to try, but it ended up being one of our favorites. They're big on west coast IPA, but also has a good variety and offers flights. I loved the puff puff passion which is a passionfruit sour. Their other beers were also well enjoyed by the group. Dinner out these days seems like, "what brew pub do we try tonight?" So many choices is better than not enough. Novo's was pretty good. I was surprised with their food and enjoyed their beer. The beer selection was good, with a good variety of flavors and content. I had three beers; the Pilsner, the Brown/Stout and the berry. Sorry, I couldn't remember the official names. The berry beer was a little more tart and bitter than I'd generally like. The Pilsner went down way to fast! The dark beer was just good! I ordered one of their pizzas and was a tad concerned when I was told the size compared to the price. I was hangry so pizza, whatever size, is what it was going to be. What I got pleasantly surprised me. The pizza was a deep dish style with a ton of toppings. Thankfully, my buddy and I split it and my belly was quite happy. My biggest beef with this place, sadly, similar to several other brew pubs I've been too recently, it's a help-yourself situation. Meaning, no table service. When I'm paying what I'm paying for craft beer these days, I'd like someone to bring my beer to me. If I wanted to serve myself, I'd stay home. That may seem harsh but the reality is, I don't eat at home, in part, so someone else can provide the service. Not sure where this seemingly growing trend started, or why, but tips will be lower and chances are good I'll try another place instead of returning. I lived in NM for a few years so I love coming in here and having the pepperoni with green chili. That combo can't be beat in my opinion. This is also a great place for families. We brought our daughter here for lunch and their high chairs were clean. They didn't mind us bringing our stroller inside either. First the good news. If I based my review purely on the food, I'd give it 4 stars. Pizza was good. Crispy and gooey. And thankfully the marinara is very tasty. Full of flavor. I also got the baked ricotta which I thought was surprisingly bad. I've had baked ricotta (next door at Decarli) that is still creamy and delicious, but this looked burnt and was very dry. Couldn't even spread it on the bread they served it with. It crumbled and fell off the bread. This recipe needs to be reworked. But the pizza was so good we'll def be back. I don't drink beer but the guest cider was delicious. Major downer is the seating (and why I gave it 3 stars). All seating is communal. So at the big long table, no biggie. But the booths are also communal which is so bizarre. How awkward to be 2 people sharing a booth with 2 strangers. It's weird enough that I'm leery to visit again unless there's 4 of us. They do have some 2 person wine barrels you can sit at by the bar but that looked unbelievably uncomfortable! They need to work on their seating. The massive booths take up so much room and they're awkward AF. Remove the booths and put in tables for 2! The way you order food also needs to be worked out. There's no clear understanding of how it works. We asked the bartender if we should order from her and she said yes. Food took at least 40 minutes to receive. I'm hopeful that they'll work out their kinks and I am excited to go back and try more food! read more

We were in Portland for a week, and it was so good we came here twice. Pros- amazing Detroit style pizza. We tried meatzza and all the lights, and built one ourselves. None disappointed. Spinach artichoke dip was a hit (but also really sour lol). Had to try the Virginia pearls since we were visiting from VA, and the crust on the meatballs was Cons- not a fan of the autumn salad. Took the family here for dinner the other night for the first time. The move to table service in the evening was a big plus for us. We started out with the bruschetta and asparagus appetizers. My wife and I really enjoyed the bruschetta and the girls couldn't get enough of the asparagus; both apps were great and the portion sizes were pretty big. The asparagus app was enough for all four of us with plenty leftover. My wife and I split the O.G. (pepperoni and cheese) while the girls split a 6inch cheese. The pizzas were great...you gotta love the way the crust and cheese create that perfect crispy bite along the edges. The dough was thick, but fluffy. Also, great day outside. ********Erin took over bartender, showed me the juicy whiskey stash; I had presumed it was only beer.... yet I discovered (only thanks to Erin) they had Colonel Taylor's, as well as an entire desert island best whiskeys of the world stash. Bald guy was first bartender, Erin is a girl bartender, not bald like my guy who hooked me up with the first beer I had; a perfect barrel aged stout, not too sweet, but plenty of whiskey and booze harshness that I like. The service/seating/ordering situation is a fucking mess. It's not clear right off the bat where or how to order. The hostess is not great at optimizing seating either, so you will end up with a big gigantic booth for eight people, with only two people sitting, or you will end up eating your $20 pizza in a barrel with very uncomfortable, non-accessible bar seats. I was very disappointed with inexistent the dark beer selection today, apparently they all ran out of them. /shrugs - what kind of brewing company doesn't have dark ales?!?!? I ended up ordering the Marryn' Berries sour, which was very refreshing. Because I was already irritated AF I didn't venture much on food and just made my own cheese pizza. Stopped in here for a weekday lunch with my son, and it did not disappoint! The bartender was so helpful, even talked to my son about how the pizza is a bit different (sauce on top) than he might be used to, so to not surprise him. Just recently move to Beaverton and luckily found this gem. As a huge beer and pizza lover, this is the place to go when youre craving the two. Whats even more interesting is that they make alcoholic beverages with beer! As gross as it sounds, their beergarita (tequila and beer mix drink) is actually really good. They did manage to mess up our order and sent our pizza to a different table but were very sorry about it and provided my girlfriend and I a round of drinks and a salad while we waited for our pizza. This is my husband and I, first time eating here and having a Detroit Style Pizza. I was surprised to see the sauce on top. We both ordered the small size. I got the cheese and my husband had the Meatzza. It was delicious. The website recommends to make a reservation, which we did on a Saturday. Once we got there, it was empty. Our server said it's wise to make them, because sometimes it can get crowded. The staff was friendly, great service and oh, did I mention that the food was DELICIOUS!
