Great place to hit before Moda, but otherwise probably not a destination I'd seek out. The beer is fine, but I've never found one I liked very much. The food is also fine, but in a city that's getting to be overloaded with amazing pizza options, this wouldn't make the list. The outside seating is nice, but gets grabbed quickly. We checked them out for the first time for Portland Burger Week, because who doesn't want to try a Detroit-style pizza reimagined in burger form? They don't normally serve burgers, so this was just for the special event week, and based on how delicious it was, I'm sure their usual menu of Detroit-style pizzas & salads is darn tasty. They have quite a large variety of their own beers on tap, and I appreciate they brew so many different styles. The beertenders were nice, as was the kitchen staff. There's seating both inside and out on their sidewalk patio, and they had good tunes playing on the sound system. I definitely want to comeback and get some pizza with a beer next time. They do have a vegan cheese option for their pizzas, but they don't have a gluten-free crust option, if that's important to you. read more

We met some friends here because it's close to the Moda and Coliseum, and we were going to a Winterhawks game. Even at 4:30, there was a line. The line moved quickly, and the service was friendly and fast. The menu is smallish, and they executed perfectly. We had the pretzel with cheese and a BBQ pizza. Both were absolutely delicious! This neighborhood brewery has a relaxed, welcoming feel and a solid lineup of beers made in-house. The food is a highlight, especially the pizza, which is great for sharing and surprisingly filling. The space itself is bright and comfortable, with lots of open air seating that works well on a nice day.That said, the experience wasn't flawless. Service felt a bit disorganized, and there was some confusion around seating and table readiness. Food also took longer than expected given how calm the place was at the time. Nothing was outright bad, but the flow could be smoother. Overall, it's a good spot with strong potential, just not completely dialed in yet. read more

Our 4 or 5 visits here since summer have all been tasty with great service. They innovate on breed so def ask for a sample of your top 2 potential brews before deciding. I enjoyed a Baltic Porter today, and in past visits the Willakenzie IPA was excellent. Both great with food. I find porters and stouts comfort symptoms during allergy season if fresh and live - and Pac NW Breweries do NOT disappoint in the Dark Arts. Yes, I have enjoyed Ft George's Fest - and love that they showcase many Breweries achievements in this regard. These lovely brews are not just for rainy season - always sample a dark brew when available before you decide. We love the Chicken Pesto and fries, and find it shareable. Lots of seating upstairs in the loft and many table game s to take up to keep your party off their phones. Hours currently 3-9 weekdays, except Fri Sat and Sunday. I hope someday they open earlier so we can do a Lazy days lunch when we are usually ready. Retirement is pretty good, except when one finds a locked door! Cheers! read more

We love this low key, friendly neighborhood brewery tucked away on a side street just up from the MODA center. They have a great selection of beers brewed onsite and their food is excellent - especially the pizza. They're 6" square pies which are perfect for sharing. We had the Pepperoni and The Revival - love me some deep dish! There's plenty of outdoor seating and the front opens up so even the inside area feels airy. Bonus: there's a school with a huge grass area across the street so doggos can have a good time too. We plan to spend many more Lazy Days here this summer. read more

My wife and I have been her twice and was really good each time. My wife is from Chicago and swears Chicago pizza is the best (eye roll) but I think the Detroit style might have a slight hold on her. The first time we went just for dinks and a salad to watch the NBA games. it was a cool date night/ bar atmosphere. The second time we got another caesar salad because that is my favorite. We also ordered a small pizza has hour four nice size slice but we kept it simple with sausage and pep but its was really good. The crust has that crunch on it and I love when the pep crispy like bacon. The service was a little slow but they tell you that when you order because the pizzas are made to order so no complaints with that. After a quick google search, it turns out that Ex Novo means "From the Beginning", or "Anew". From the beginning of our meal here, it was evident that Ex Novo knows their lane and does it well. Those Detroit Style Pizzas are unlike anything I've ever had... which, to be fair, I've never been to Detroit to have their pizza. So I'm guessing it's pretty on brand? What I can say is, these pizzas are loaded. They are also a bit greasy and a heavy gut bomb, but sometimes that's the meal you're going for! Food came out super timely as well. The On This Date Detriot Pizza really called to us so we tried it. I enjoyed the crispy angular crust and the flavor combo of sweet dates, savory tomato sauce, and balsamic drizzles but the dough was a bit too much for my liking. It's cakey in a way and didn't taste much like bread like pizza dough should be; still a very interesting and enjoyable experience. The Fried Chicken Basket was perfect for sharing with 3 juicy breaded fried chicken pieces and fries. Great pickles! The Brussel Sprouts could have been crispier to me and were too buttery, so much so that that's all I tasted: Butter. But brussel sprouts are delicious to me so I kept going back for more. This dish has a lot of potential, it just didn't quite do it this time around. Beer list was a bit underwhelming too for stout lovers. Packed before the Blazer game, but also quickly realized it was Monday = all day happy hour! While we didn't come to eat, the food passing us by looked tasty. We waited in line to order at the bar...the place itself is a bit tight and line was pretty much out the door! Staff were quick to pour drinks and friendly. It was standing room only, but as we just came in for a couple drinks it was no bother. Their Hazy Pale Ale was absolutely fantastic. One of the best I've had in a while. Second time here for beer! We got lucky as both times were warm weather though 2nd adventure here we sat inside as the outdoor tables were taken/reserved on Resy. Yes you can make Resy's so do look for that online. We were definitely ok sitting inside though the brolife character one table over was dropping way too many F-bombs... especially for being a new dad! Thankfully their newborn was sleeping. I digress, we ordered a flight and 16oz fruited wheat beer... we were hoping they had their saison, gose, ipa sour or the like as it's the summer but they had some more technical mixed cultured and fruited wheat beer... one from gin barrels. I presume they had something in their cans though we enjoyed the flight was sort bummed no classic sours on tap! Hence 4 stars Food in order that we liked best to least: Brussels--Mac n cheese --pretzels. The pretzels were too dry. 3 star pretzel, step up that game! We saw the ladies (with the brolife crew) order salads that looked bomb. The salads went to the dudes end of the table but clearly they don't eat anything besides beef and protein shakes as one proclaimed to the staff "you know we dudes didn't order salads, cha!" (Flexes neck muscles, fist bumps ensued) We'll go back but I'll make sure they have the sours we like so much from Ex Novo before we go back. I was so excited to visit Lazy Days for the first time since the turn over from Ex Novo. This is such a lovely space, and I was excited to try the food. I was blown away! The salads were both delicious and well balanced, and the pizzas rocked. I got The Revival and it's unlike any other pizza. The chimichurri, smoked mozzarella, whole garlic (straight to my heart, so good!) and mushrooms were an amazing combination. Service was great, our waitress was lovely, attentive, and really nice to our kids. The play area was closed because of the Blazers game, but we are excited to return on a quieter night. My kids both devoured their grilled cheeses. I'm honestly so impressed and I can't wait to come back. Oh yeah, the beer was great too. I had the Irish Goodbye and it's everything you could want from an Irish Stout. I'm stuffed and yet I'm still plotting the next time I can get that pizza again. This is another great brewery that opened after I left Portland. I love the ambiance, unique without being pretentious. I love the beer, inventive without making me think "we're going to have to answer for beer like this in a few years" (I'm looking at you, double sour marshmallow creamsicle IPA!). I love the focus on both ales AND lagers. Too many breweries are either fully one or the other. Didn't have any food here, so can't really comment. Definitely a brewery I would frequent if I still lived in Portland. read more

Five stars all day for the food, the beer, the staff, and the atmosphere! We're only in PDX for the weekend, and got in late on a Saturday night. Luckily we're staying only about a quarter of a mile from Ex Novo and we were able to drop gear and head over. They sat us immediately, and we tore into a set of tasting flights. They had so many beers that we did three flights and still didn't taste it all. The favorites of the night were the cream ale with coffee (C.R.E.A.M), the Scotch Ale (What's Love Scot to do with it?), and the English Mild (Where the Mild Things Are). Special shout out to The Ruminator (the barrel aged Doppel Bock). Right, there's food too! The fries.. oh my, the fries.. the malt vinegar french fries are not to be missed, and it is a healthy mound of taters that come on that order. The veggie bowl was delicious - packed with red quinoa, black beans, pickled red onions, and Feta cheese - and served chilled. I was not expecting that, but it was great! The only warm bit was the tempura battered squash on top. Heaven. The boyfriend got the chicken sandwich which was two double fried chicken thighs pilled high on a potato bun. Pro Tip: order the fries and get a cup of the beer cheese and green chili soup as the side for your sandwich. It's thinner than the side of beer cheese which will cost you a bit more, and is crazy good with fries dipped into it. read more

I hosted a group of 13 people here and from the first contact I had with management making sure we had an area to hang out together was nothing but smooth. Really nice people and very accommodating. We had the "grain table". It is a long table with grain under Plexiglass running down the center of it. When I arrived they had water/glasses on the table for us as well as menus. The table was just a bit tight when it came to all of us ordering food but we made it work. They have a super cool space here and in the evening the lighting is just perfect. People...you are right inside the brewery when you are here... There are not a lot of tables/booths so get there early. They also have a large space upstairs that can be rented for events. There are several picnic tables outside for when the weather is decent. They have a very nice menu here over and above their brews/whiskey and other drink choices. They also have a drink and a food special every day. I had to drink special with prickly pear. It was not only beautiful but was delicious. The food special was a blue cheese, red onion and pepper pizza sounded yummy but I went with the wedge salad which was perfect. I also tried a friends deep-fried pickles which were tasty. They were bread and butter pickles instead of dill. Different! Street parking is what you will get here and it was pretty abundant within a couple blocks of the establishment. While several older established brew pubs have closed due to the ever increasing competition of new restaurants, food halls and food truck parks (see in memorandum link below) there is still a burst of new breweries establishing a foothold with great beer, of course, and a modern, homemade spin on what is now considered "Pub food." Gone are the days of just burgers and chicken wings. Yes, you can still get them, but that burger may have caramelized onions and a freshly griddled bun and the chicken will be fried, served on a toasted bun Nashville style, meaning hot! Fries are Malt Vinegar, and if fries aren't your thing (I don't want to know you), then you can order fried pickles. Even the pizza has a fresh take, served "Detroit" style, a square shaped pie cut into four smaller squares. My family is from Italy and we call this Sicilian pizza; either way, its damn good. That's a sampling of the food menu at Ex Novo Brewing, which now has locations in NE Portland, Beaverton and even New Mexico. They have several beers on tap. Disappointingly, no hard cider on tap, just three types of Reverend Nat in a can, served with a glass. Love the modern-industrial meets rustic vibe of the interior. The bar is a slab of a tree, wood is polished, edges are left natural. Beautiful. From the bar you see right into the brewery gleaming with the stainless steel vats. Floors are wood, tables are wood, chairs are wood and metal - point being, there is nothing to soften the noise so it is loud. I like to think of it as bustling! If you prefer your ambiance a little quieter, ask to sit upstairs. There are also a few picnic tables out front. Was there last night with a group of about 15 and everyone had a great time. We sat at one of the long, very narrow, bar height tables. It really works for conversation because you are all on top of each other so can engage with everyone, unlike traditional tables where you really can only chat with the friends directly next to you. Not sure if this was intentional, but its a good strategy. Our group had: - Mac& cheese, raves! Large portion, lots of ooey goodness. f - Fried chicken sandwich Nashville style, high marks - Brewburger, just ok. Meat patty super small - Barley salad - fresh, colorful, lots of chew from the barley! - Wedge salad - great, lots of chew since it was also stuffed with barley - Fried pickles, a hit if you like some crunch with your dill. - A few orders of the beer nuts which were very sweet so if you are not into sweet, but prefer salty, skip the nuts.
