Steeplejack Brewing is absolutely in a renowned church. Located on the eastside of Portland, Steeplejack blends into the surroundings, masking itself as a larger church than what the business actually contains. We walked up the steps and were in awe of the stain glasses windows. The interior is preserved and still has remnants of it being a church, although the altar may have been replaced by beer brewing and across the way is a bar. This place is magnificent in architecture and design. It feels like we're sitting down in the pews while having a drink. Perusing the menu, I chose a Hazy IPA and decided I wanted to try their peach cream salad. My fiancé chose to have their lunch special which entails a beer, a burger, and their fries. The beers were great! Hazy as it should be with hints of fruit. Yet, their salad was not good. Do not get their salad. Their salad was very salty, the peaches weren't sweet nor was the cream. It was salty overall as if the kitchen accidentally doused it with too much pistachios and couldn't clean it up, I'd say skip it. My fiancé's burger was way better. Service is okay. They don't really check on you at all. Overall, it was a cool experience to drink and eat in a church. I'd recommend it! read more

The major draw is that it's in an old church and it truly stands out as unique in Portland. It's mad spacious, airy inside and thoughtfully renovated. The beer selection is also pretty good and you can even take some to go. Food was mid. Gochujang Honey Wings were pretty much just honey and not enough gochujang, but it's maybe toned down for folks who can't handle spice? The wings had a chance to redeem itself with a good fry but the sauce made the wings a bit soggy--still juicy wings though. The Asparagus and Hummus Plate were just ok too, nothing special. Service here was absolutely trash. We were seated for 20+ mins without anybody checking in on us while all the other tables were the opposite. We gave up being patient and just waved someone down. I hoped they would make up for it with faster food and drink times, but no, they didn't. Parking situation is also terrible. You'll likely have to circle the block once or twice. read more

I want to start off by saying that I love the location being an old church converted to a bar. It is roomy and spacious and can handle large groups, kids allowed, and you can reserve rooms with no fees or minimums for special events. Parking is a bit of a pain as it's very limited street parking so you mostly likely need to find street parking further away and I parked a few blocks away. This is going to be typical of businesses in the downtown area. A group of 4 went last night on a Friday. It was so loud in there that it made it very difficult to order to our waitress without yelling. I tried to order two beers. One was their dreamweaver stout which I missed was only a 5 oz pour because it is listed at the very end of the description and in tiny font. Fine I was accepting of that. I then asked for the 5 oz pour followed by a 12 oz shortie of the Stonewarden. We also ordered the fried chicken sandwich which is $17 and didn't come with fries which are an extra $3. Our waitress returned with the 5 oz Dream Weaver but also a 5 oz Stonewarden. I told her I asked her for a 12 oz Stonewarden and said I didn't. I still wanted a 12 oz and she flat out said no she can't do that. She may have explained why but it was too darn loud to hear it. I looked up the menu which I posted a pic of and it didn't say anything about only being served in a 5 oz. It's half the ABV of the DreamWeaver. I don't know if these are brewery rules or what. It was my first order so it's not like I was being cut off. I honestly don't know why she flat out refused. This single experience tarnished my whole experience with SteepleJack last night and thus a 3 star. If these are brewery rules , it needs to be made more clear on the menus and maybe choose a bigger font or bold it or just somehow make it more noticeable. Anyway the food itself was delicious. Absolutely loved the chicken sandwich and fries. The rest of the service was good by our waitress and despite my meh experience, I chalked it up to brewery rules which aren't clearly stated anywhere and the loud noise. I still tipped her well as the service industry works hard and deserves, but with so many breweries in Portland to choose from, I may not consider Steeplejack a place I want to come back to for awhile. read more

My wife and I were on our last day in Portland and found this place in an old church that makes its own beer and has a wonderful menu. We sat at the mostly empty establishment right after opening on a Monday and the bartender was super friendly, and I ordered an IPA to start. Of course it was awesome. After perusing the menu, I decided to get the pulled pork sandwich and a side salad. It came out pretty fast and it was huge and flavorful. Lots of meat and a perfect bun. The side salad had some pickled asparagus that were a nice surprise, and everything was fresh and made for a perfect lunch. I got one more delicious IPA to finish it off. Excellent service, great food and drinks in a one-of-a-kind old church. Casey, is a wonderful human being, so welcoming and great drink recommendations. We got two espresso martinis, two lemon drinks, the chicken sandwich and a burger. The chicken had a great Korean influence, with a tangy and sweet sauce. And the burger, I added tomato, was a surprise, that it was a thick-cut yellow slice! Wow, tasted like a fresh farmer's market find. This place was so cool to walk into. It's an old church turned into a brewery and the inside and outside could still pass for Sunday service. When I walked in there were only a few people and I sat at the bar to do some work and the bartender was nice and showed me the outlets and gave me the wifi. He recommended the lunch special which was a beer and burger for $14, so a good deal. The burger was really good and the fries were amazing. It's inside a church that was saved from being demolished and has a beautifully restored stained glass window as the centerpiece of the main hall. There is a fine selection of beer, including a few light beer options in case you are making a few other stops, plus a substantial list of hoppy beers, plus cocktails and some delicious Bauman's cider. We came for happy hour and really enjoyed the variety of the Bar Sampler. The steeplecheese was particularly delicious and the salty almonds really made us want more beer. What a great place--the atmosphere is especially wonderful. I was in a meeting room and just had drinks, so this review is not about the food. Our service was attentive and professional. It could have been easy to have forgotten about our group, tucked away in a private room, but we received wonderful service all night. The organization I was with prefers Steeplejack for the easy booking and great treatment before, during, and after a meeting here. After the meeting, I had to explore the rest of the building: it did not disappoint. Stunning stained glass, very clean bathroom, other private meeting rooms, a quiet place to sit on couches to catch up with friends--it all looks inviting. The outdoor seating didn't look appealing to me--it's basically curbside next to busy Broadway, but it's better than nothing, if you're craving outdoor spaces. I'll be back to try the food. A couple of friends and I stopped in for happy hour but unfortunately our experience was really disappointing. We were charged full price instead of happy hour pricing which was frustrating especially since the food itself missed the mark. I ordered the poutine fries and the crying tiger (Caesar salad) The poutine was honestly pretty hard to eat. The "gravy" didn't really taste like gravy at all it had more of a chunky curry like flavor that just didn't work with the fries. Even my friend who ordered the same thing agreed it was rough to get through but she was starving and didn't want to wait for something else. The Caesar salad was also not what I expected. It started off creamy but had a really spicy aftertaste that really didn't fit a Caesar salad. The croutons were tiny crumbs like the end of the bag instead of actual pieces. It does say on The menu breadcrumbs but just not for me. Our server was really nice but disappeared and didn't check on us and our food. Someone else ended up checking on us and when I mentioned that the poutine wasn't tasting right they did kindly remove it from the bill which I appreciated but when I received my receipt via text walking to our cars, we realized we'd been charged full price instead of happy hour prices. I still left a good tip because I know restaurant work isn't easy but feeling really disappointed. Between the food quality, the service , and the pricing mistake, it just wasn't a great experience. Went on a random week night to grab a beer and after perusing the menu decided to jump ship and relocate to Stormbreaker for one of their famous burgers. Which, if you haven't tried....you should. We realized we could get a burger (twice the size) and beer there for a significant amount less. Fantastic space in a remodeled church. The beer is great and the servers are nice, but service takes forever. We got our first round of drinks fairly quickly, but then waited for 45 minutes before we got our food and almost that long before the waiter came back to ask about another round of drinks. This place is so beautiful! It's a fully restored church with gorgeous ceilings and stained glass windows. There are several rooms where you can host a private event. The staff are all amazing, friendly, and you'll feel right at home. It gets really busy here, but the wait time isn't too bad at all. The food is fantastic! The chef does an amazing job. I got the cucumber pea salad, it was so yummy! Also, the veggie tacos were fantastic, as were the croquettes. I love all the veggie options I'm not a beer drinker, but they have a full bar and I heard the beer is pretty good. Food's solid.. the wings are always great, and the beer never disappoints. This was my third time here, and while I keep coming back for the food and drinks, the service vibe is just... off. Our order was almost right, but every time I visit, I feel like simple things (like asking for a napkin or double-checking something) come across as an inconvenience to the staff. Daily happy hour specials until 4pm was one of the highlights for me. This was my first time visiting and our server was very kind/patient with questions we had about the menu. We have driven by often and thought was this brewery a church or was is a masonry temple. Ok they reveal the history on their menu it was a church and the glad stained windows are in honor of the aids pandemic. The brewery saved the building from getting taken down - a good reason to support them. But of course if the drinks and food not holding up to standards that would be hard. So happy to say it holds. It's great bar food! We had the steeplejack cheese with crackers and two burgers. You can have the burger with a beyond plant based paddy instead of a meat one as well. The burger I had was the classic beef burger patty with Monterey Jack cheese, caramelized onions, Tajin aioli, and pickled jalapeños. The jalapeño are not kicking it hot just slightly adding a little spice to the Burger. I was not a fan of the bun I think it is a oh fluffy bun but just too much of it. It only adds volume to the burger but not really taste. Of course that's just - as always - my opinion. I had the side salad and that was so surprising it even came with pickled asparagus spears and almond crunch. Hubby had the same burger with the behind paddy and shoestring fries. They have been perfectly crisp and a tip - you can ask for their mustard aioli to dip the fries in! And the man the drinks of course they have plenty of beer and some cocktails. But they have also two non alcoholic cocktails and a great selection on other non alcoholic drinks - so bring all friends in :). New policy of making people wait "somewhere else" for unknown reasons while there are many empty tables is a bit absurd. We stopped by on a slow day, and there were plenty of empty tables within the primary seating area...but they instead put everyone on a waitlist. More tables left than were people waiting and they still weren't sitting people Would have been a much better review, if it wasn't for this new seating policy. Have been here many times as we live close by, but if this is the new practice we will won't likely return. When we finally did get seated everything was great and the food came out quickly, but would have preferred to sit in one of the available tables with water and even getting our own drinks from the bar counter. read more

Feeling like a heathen drinking beer in a church. It's acceptable here though. They converted a church into a brewery, quite beautiful interior with tons of seating. I ordered a flight of 5 beers, lots of cool flavors to choose from. My server was nice but a little cold. I felt very rushed to choose something even though it wasn't really that busy and not really given any suggestions but he seemed that way with a couple of people while I was sitting at the bar. As opposed one other server was actually quite nice and much more attentive. I ended up going with: the cantaloupe cream, the alewife, dank IPA, mega Mouteka triple ipa, and science maverick. My favorites of the batch were the triple ipa and the cantaloupe cream. The alewife was a little too warm for me. I also ordered a Winters Hill Pinot noir, and it was also a bit too warm, not room temperature. Overall cool spot to hang and bring a group of friends to try all the flavors of beers. read more

Everything in my original review holds true for how great their beers are and what a fantastic space it is inside an old church. Writing an update because we finally got back here to try their food menu, and it was darn tasty! Their staff were upbeat & friendly, despite them being very busy at lunch on a Saturday, and our food came out pretty quick. The Hubs and I shared the fried chicken sandwich and added on shoestring fries for an additional $3, along with their grilled asparagus, and their gluten-free brownie. Everything was delicious! Their gluten-free brownie reminded me more of the texture of a warm flourless chocolate cake, but that's a good thing! My only complaint is some of the food prices were high for the portion, although prices are going up everywhere these days. It was $16 for the chicken sandwich, without any sides, and the sandwich was on the small size compared to how so many places are making ginormous sandwiches these days for a similar price (the sandwich was definitely an appropriate serving size for one person, though, just expected it to be bigger or include a side of fries for that price). Awesome brewery inside an old church. It's gorgeous, has good beer, good food, and good prices, what more could you ask for? Service was quick and efficient. It's a large space able to handle a lot of people so even when busy it's still relatively easy to get a table. Great for all ages even kids. Full bar so even if you're not a beer fan you can still grab a cocktail. I thought the food was very good. We started with nachos and the queso is absolutely wonderful. It almost tasted like a beer cheese soup. We split tacos. My friend got the verde pork tacos and I had the vegan gochujang ones. I'm not vegan nor even vegetarian but I LOVE gochujang and these did not disappoint. Helpful hint, order a side of that queso for your tacos and you won't be disappointed. read more

The brew pub is located in an old church with high bean ceilings and stained glass. Side rooms to get comfy. Steeplejack was named Best New Brewery at the 2022 Oregon Beer Awards - Hallelujah brothers and sisters! So my wife and I "holy rolled over" on bikes to taste the IPA. We loved the northwest IPA - "Praise be" to the delish hops of Citra, Simcoe and El Dorado, 6.6% ABV IPA with marmalade, pine resin, and gummy candy notes. Rating a beer alone in the old church I'll give it an "Amen" because it delivered the dank bitterness I love in a NW IPA. Next time we'll try the grub and update the review. I came here to check it out for I loved the pizza at the other location. Pretty spacious place and the customer service is excellent. I had the hummus and tzatziki and though it was delicious I was a little bit let down. There was 3x more hummus than tzatziki. Two pieces of sad looking asparagus, and a few pickled onions, 2 pieces of pickled cauliflower, and pita bread. Not enough to cover the massive amount of hummus. I'd have appreciated some olives, and some other veggies. C'mon you couldn't afford more veggies? I do like this place though. We'll be back! Generous portions too! read more

Hosted a book swap/dinner party last night and it was a SUCCESS thanks to Steeplejack! I hadn't made reservations thinking there would be enough space without them. To my surprise, it was a packed house especially with additional holiday gatherings going on. Fortunately, I was able to request a table for a party of 11 last minute and be seated before everyone else arrived. Thank you to Lauren for accommodating a large party so last minute and GREAT service. It was so nice to have service in the main hall rather than needing to scan a QR code. However, it was mentioned service wasn't available in every space. I was pleasantly surprised to see they revamped their food menu! Really more of a sit-down restaurant now. The food menu includes gluten-free and vegan options, including a beyond burger and tacos - YAY! The drinks menu also got revamped - including gluten-free and non-alcoholic cocktails and beer. What a great place to have a drink and a bite to eat. As I was told by our server and friends from the area, the building the restaurant occupies is an old church. It still has the stained glass "Rose Window" at what would have been the pulpit. We were there for dinner, the restaurant was busy but the service was outstanding. Thank you Christian for your great service and personable interaction! I had the pork belly bon mi sandwich. It was exceptional! Everyone in our party praised the food! The shoestring and sweet potato fries were a good accoutrement to the burgers that were ordered. The majesty of the architecture alone is worth the visit! I'd be a regular if I was local. Did you hear about the church that started brewing beer? They call it "Ale-lujah!" This place was so popular at Reddit a few years ago and now having seen it firsthand , I can see why . Beautiful setting and a very unique vibe is what will impress you when you first enter ,but the great beer and food is what will bring you back . The place was empty except for one more party. We were attended immediately and they let us know that they would be closing soon before we ordered which is something I appreciate . We ordered everything at once and the food arrived promptly . The beer was fabulous, and I loved that they had so many options for every kind of beer lover. I got the Peach lager which was very light and refreshing .The burger was everything I was hoping for -soft ,juicy and very filling . The bun was the USP according to me . We also got the Vegan tacos that I struggled to finish and so they went back home .I was surprised that they heated up really well for breakfast the next day . The tortillas didn't turn soggy and the filling stayed pretty good . The steeplecheese and crackers was perhaps not something I would order again . Not a fan of the crackers they used .
