    Fried Chicken Sandwich
    Alex K.

I want to start off by saying that I love the location being an old church converted to a bar. It is roomy and spacious and can handle large groups, kids allowed, and you can reserve rooms with no fees or minimums for special events. Parking is a bit of a pain as it's very limited street parking so you mostly likely need to find street parking further away and I parked a few blocks away. This is going to be typical of businesses in the downtown area. A group of 4 went last night on a Friday. It was so loud in there that it made it very difficult to order to our waitress without yelling. I tried to order two beers. One was their dreamweaver stout which I missed was only a 5 oz pour because it is listed at the very end of the description and in tiny font. Fine I was accepting of that. I then asked for the 5 oz pour followed by a 12 oz shortie of the Stonewarden. We also ordered the fried chicken sandwich which is $17 and didn't come with fries which are an extra $3. Our waitress returned with the 5 oz Dream Weaver but also a 5 oz Stonewarden. I told her I asked her for a 12 oz Stonewarden and said I didn't. I still wanted a 12 oz and she flat out said no she can't do that. She may have explained why but it was too darn loud to hear it. I looked up the menu which I posted a pic of and it didn't say anything about only being served in a 5 oz. It's half the ABV of the DreamWeaver. I don't know if these are brewery rules or what. It was my first order so it's not like I was being cut off. I honestly don't know why she flat out refused. This single experience tarnished my whole experience with SteepleJack last night and thus a 3 star. If these are brewery rules , it needs to be made more clear on the menus and maybe choose a bigger font or bold it or just somehow make it more noticeable. Anyway the food itself was delicious. Absolutely loved the chicken sandwich and fries. The rest of the service was good by our waitress and despite my meh experience, I chalked it up to brewery rules which aren't clearly stated anywhere and the loud noise. I still tipped her well as the service industry works hard and deserves, but with so many breweries in Portland to choose from, I may not consider Steeplejack a place I want to come back to for awhile.

My wife and I were on our last day in Portland and found this place in an old church that makes its own beer and has a wonderful menu. We sat at the mostly empty establishment right after opening on a Monday and the bartender was super friendly, and I ordered an IPA to start. Of course it was awesome. After perusing the menu, I decided to get the pulled pork sandwich and a side salad. It came out pretty fast and it was huge and flavorful. Lots of meat and a perfect bun. The side salad had some pickled asparagus that were a nice surprise, and everything was fresh and made for a perfect lunch. I got one more delicious IPA to finish it off. The church setting with the stained glass was a wonderful touch.

Excellent service, great food and drinks in a one-of-a-kind old church. Casey, is a wonderful human being, so welcoming and great drink recommendations. We got two espresso martinis, two lemon drinks, the chicken sandwich and a burger. The chicken had a great Korean influence, with a tangy and sweet sauce. And the burger, I added tomato, was a surprise, that it was a thick-cut yellow slice! Wow, tasted like a fresh farmer's market find. Will be back with our pup, dogs are welcome outside, and I was, while not in need, impressed by their excellent wheelchair access, lots of signs around.

    Awesome place.

Didn't try the food, but the beer is amazing, with cask and nitro options. Lots to pick from and it's very good. The ambiance is REALLY cool. Nice stained glass and lots of room. Service is great too!

This place was so cool to walk into. It's an old church turned into a brewery and the inside and outside could still pass for Sunday service. When I walked in there were only a few people and I sat at the bar to do some work and the bartender was nice and showed me the outlets and gave me the wifi. He recommended the lunch special which was a beer and burger for $14, so a good deal. The burger was really good and the fries were amazing. Would definitely come back again if they have a band playing or when I'm in town again.

Steeplejack brewing is the perfect place to grab a beer and some bites on a rainy day. It's inside a church that was saved from being demolished and has a beautifully restored stained glass window as the centerpiece of the main hall. There is a fine selection of beer, including a few light beer options in case you are making a few other stops, plus a substantial list of hoppy beers, plus cocktails and some delicious Bauman's cider. We came for happy hour and really enjoyed the variety of the Bar Sampler. The steeplecheese was particularly delicious and the salty almonds really made us want more beer. Finished with a 5 oz pour Dream Weaver Imperial Stout as a delicious, flavorful strong stout.

Super groovy place. Decent beer and interesting menu items. Busy place.

Super cool spot. Chicken sandwich was delicious. My dad loved his burger. Good beer. The place was packed on a Monday night.

Food was good but I've had better bar food. I really like their sweet potatoes fries. They also have tacos, and many other entrees, and sides. They have soft serve and cookies for dessert. Service was great. The place/ambience itself was great. It's large, lots of seating and space. The giant stain glass window is gorgeous. Street parking. The neighborhood is nice. Some parts of the streets are quite wide.

I love the inside of this place. Turning a historic building into a brewery with great beers and food is perfect. Our server was really nice. This was our first stop after landing in Portland and it was definitely a good choice!

4:59pm and we were not charged happy hour prices.

A couple of friends and I stopped in for happy hour but unfortunately our experience was really disappointing. We were charged full price instead of happy hour pricing which was frustrating especially since the food itself missed the mark. I ordered the poutine fries and the crying tiger (Caesar salad) The poutine was honestly pretty hard to eat. The "gravy" didn't really taste like gravy at all it had more of a chunky curry like flavor that just didn't work with the fries. Even my friend who ordered the same thing agreed it was rough to get through but she was starving and didn't want to wait for something else. The Caesar salad was also not what I expected. It started off creamy but had a really spicy aftertaste that really didn't fit a Caesar salad. The croutons were tiny crumbs like the end of the bag instead of actual pieces. It does say on The menu breadcrumbs but just not for me. Our server was really nice but disappeared and didn't check on us and our food. Someone else ended up checking on us and when I mentioned that the poutine wasn't tasting right they did kindly remove it from the bill which I appreciated but when I received my receipt via text walking to our cars, we realized we'd been charged full price instead of happy hour prices. I still left a good tip because I know restaurant work isn't easy but feeling really disappointed. Between the food quality, the service , and the pricing mistake, it just wasn't a great experience. The space itself is awesome the food just didn't work for us.

The location is awesome (minus parking), love the friendliness of the staff. However........was shocked at the menu and prices. Went on a random week night to grab a beer and after perusing the menu decided to jump ship and relocate to Stormbreaker for one of their famous burgers. Which, if you haven't tried....you should. We realized we could get a burger (twice the size) and beer there for a significant amount less. Which is too bad since Steeplejack's venue is the best time I've had in a church since Sunday school.

Pretty neat spot for a brewery. Service was friendly. James did a great job. Beers were good. Olives were heavily herbed. It was between that and the almonds and both bartenders said the almonds would be extremely salty if I wanted that salty taste. I went with the herbs and there were chunks of herbs bunched together in the olive oil. And both skewers were unfortunately splintering...

If you are not playing Magic the Gathering or D&D, you will feel like the 'weird one'! Beers are good, with a couple lagers, a stout, and some IPA's. The food is surprising! You'd think they'd phone-it-in, but there's a great selection of Latin food. Everything from Cubanos to bowls to burritos.

The fantasy and the Dungeons & Dragons themes are really fun and totally calls to me. So therefore with our first experience here I stocked up on a lot of swag- shirts! My first beer with this brewery was a Red Ale or Amber Ale, The Lady of Embers. This was a very enjoyable first time beer with this brewery. Flavor features in this beer are Caramel, a roastiness, maltiness, biscuity and a dry finish. It proved to be a fun beer to try out for the first time and we were eager to come back and try more of their beers. A bit of time passed and we were able to do that. This time we got three different beers of different types to give us a well rounded experience with their beers. Cascade Falls was the first beer on the second experience that we delved into. This beer is a Cream Ale and I haven't had one in a while so I was quite eager to get a hold of another one again. This particular Cream Ale had peaches and vanilla as the primary flavors and they were pretty good. It was sweet but not heavy handed which made this beer pleasant. This beer was a collaboration beer with another brewery, Thunder Island Brewing Company. After that I moved into dark beer territory and got a stout by the name of The Ashbringer. This one I rated very highly on Untappd because I enjoyed the flavor profile so very much! This stout has flavor highlights of roastiness, a spiced presence, coffee, chocolate and some clove. It was a really well made stout...well balanced and one I really got into. I believe actually this was my favorite beer out of the several I have tried. The last beer was a Marzen beer, a type that isn't too terribly common but always a good one when I can get a hold of it. The name of this beer was the Hasta La Raiz. This is a nice light bodied beer that has maltiness, roastiness, some fruitiness and a bit of a floral presence. It was a fun one to try out for sure. TPK Brewing also serves food and it's quite good! We grazed off of several different appetizers here that we really enjoyed. The first one was the Yuca Frita which was Yucca cut into big, thick French Fries sort cuts and we dipped it into a green sauce as well as a pico de gallo type of dip which enhanced the experience. In addition to that we got a beef empanada that Steve and I split along with the same sauces...also excellent and then to round out our snacking here we got the Arepitas De Queso which is a white masa cake mixed with cheese and then deep fried. It also had the same sauces as the previous two appetizers but we were fine with that... we were all about it and deep into it. Steve and loved this place and would be thrilled to come back to enjoy more of their food and beers !
