I love this place. I just wish they had a location closer to the city. It's so far. It's my favorite place to get Haitian Patties but I can't go as frequently as a I want. When I do go, I get a box. Stopped by today for a late afternoon snack. Picked up 3 apiece of the beef patties and chicken patties plus 2 currant rolls. Patties were still very warm and at a perfect temperature to quickly chow down. The currant rolls were delicious, too, but not overly sweet. The gentleman who took my order and my money was pleasant. It was very quiet in there when we got there close to 5pm, and some of the shelves toward the front were empty, so not sure how much more and what else they stock. Pricing was super fair as everything I ordered came out to only $11.00. If you're not very familiar with Haitian cuisine, try several things. With these prices, you can try out several items without breaking the bank, which is what I intend to do next time. Definitely coming back here when I'm back in the neighborhood! I remember the first time I stepped foot into this bakery about a year ago... It was an early Monday morning and I was on the hunt for some breakfast in this new neighborhood. As I was walking past Le Bon Pain I decided to take a peek inside thinking I could find a decent breakfast pastry or something. Upon entering I was quickly greeted by a man in a black Chef's outfit and I'm assuming he could tell it was my first time in there. I expected it to be the typical bakery with pastries and cookies etc. but there were not too many visuals on display. I'm not familiar with Haitian food at all so after looking around for a minute I proceeded to leave but the man that had greeted me stopped me and handed me this puff pasty looking thing which I now know is a Haitian patty. He told me to try it and that I wouldn't regret it... Well my friends, that man was absolutely right! So these little delicious buttery flaky wonderful patties are only a $1 and come in a variety of fish, vegetable, chicken, and beef. I have tried them all and my favorite is the vegetable and fish. They also have a fair price of $10 for a dozen of your choice. I literally stop by once a week every week because a year later I still can't get enough. Unfortunately I have to take away star for unsatisfactory service because I have witnessed the staff members on numerous occasions moving at a snail's pace or indulging in side conversation when the line is practically out the door. They have an assortment of freshly baked breads which, on occasion, I have gotten. They make a raisin challah that I use for French toast that's amazing. I don't really bother with much else, though I'm sure there's more here, but, I come for the patties! They have a delicate and flaky pastry crust that can not be found on your typical Jamaican patty. My family has been coming here for pate since my birth. I remember people used to fight on the line for pate and bread on Christmas, Easter, and Haitian Independence Day. The place has seen its better days, with the quality of pate and cake. When I was younger the pate had so much meat and I would take two and have it for lunch. Now, the pate is banal. Update: The coronavirus pandemic is the reason for the plastic dividers that divide the employees from the customers. FOR SAFETY! With that being said, I'm gonna need those two plus-sized people that are ALWAYS sitting on that stool by the cash register to STAND UP or move that stool a little close to the plastic divider so they're able to reach their hands to take my money from me or meet me half way. I put my $10 bill HALFWAY on the counter so the lady can pick that shit up and do her job. The employee starts pointing at the bill and pointing at the lady sitting in her stool like I need to give it to her....how far do you need me to reach under this SAFETY DIVIDER?! THen when she gives me my change she puts it down right next to the register so I have to reach under this damn divider again for my change. This happens every time since they got those dividers, like what is the point of it. Last time I went the guy damn near threw the quarter at me instead of putting it in a reachable section of the counter. These people honestly have poor professionalism as business owners. I don't expect them to change now, they've been this was for decades. ---------- I only come here for the patties and bread. Occasionally a phascao. And they're all really good. BUT THE SERVICE!!!!!!!!!! With all due respect as a fellow Haitian, I fucking hate these people. I've known about this bakery for maybe 2 decades now... the service has always been the same. You walk out in and no matter who's sitting right up front, the won't bother acknowledging you until you've stood there waiting for them to finish texting or scrolling through their phones. Sometimes they won't say anything and just be looking out the window until someone else comes and helps you. If you're not the person that's gonna be taking my order, that's fine. But at least acknowledge a PAYING customer that's standing here waiting to be served and let them know someone will be with them in a minute. This is my issue with Haitian and Jamaican business for example. Because they're the boss of the establishment, all sense of decent customer services goes out the window. Especially if they can smell that you're an islander as well. The service alone is the reason I have never returned and it's actually pretty sad because like I said, their product is good. So, if you're looking for authentic Haitian Baked goods and foods, this is the best spot in NYC, bar none. They've made some upgrades like accepting credit cards (Finally) and the food especially the Pattés (Signature item) are five star caliber all the way. I don't like the fact that their prices have slightly increased since their early days but that's to be expected and it's not the reason I took away a star. The reason for the loss-of-star is their customer service. The staff demeanor is generally not pleasant and they have some bad habits like carrying on side conversations while you wait or speaking in such a low voice that you question what just happened but you don't want to cause problems that'll lead them to going all Soup Man on you (They won't). Ignore the lack of customer service skills. Whatever day you go, just go early (before 12 or 1 pm) to avoid the lines of customers and to get a chance at parking for a minute. Speaking of parking, don't double park. The NYPD are cracking down on that (and it's just plain annoying that people block an entire lane). If you go early enough during the day, you can park, buy and leave in a reasonable amount of time. All these issues aside, GO. The food is addictive. Go get some! read more
