The Definition of a Hidden Gem Near JFK I'm writing this specifically about the restaurant side of OB's. I was on a work assignment at JFK Airport, and this quickly became my absolute go-to for Caribbean food--I've eaten here for lunch and dinner more times than I can count. If you're looking for a fancy sit-down spot, keep moving; there is no ambiance to speak of as it's strictly take-out. But if you're looking for authentic, high-quality food, this is the place. Here is why OB's is a standout: The Consistency: I've had nearly everything on the menu at this point, and I have yet to be disappointed. The quality is hit out of the park every single time. The Portions: They are amazingly large. You definitely get your money's worth here. The Staff: The folks behind the counter are always friendly and welcoming, which makes a difference when you're grabbing a quick meal. The Price: In a city where everything is getting expensive, their pricing is absolutely spot on. Our family always pick up cakes from OB's for special occasions. This time we needed to order a custom cake for our mom's 80th birthday party. I gave 4 stars due to the beginning communication. It took about two weeks to get in contact with someone to order and finalized. In the event planning business that's unacceptable. Nonetheless, the order was finalized and upon delivery we were are all very pleasantly surprised and happy at the outcome. A friend recommended this place because she really likes the carrot cake. So I thought, let me give it a try. This is an in and out unless I overlooked gseating arrangements, so dressed or casual will fit. I noticed one side is a Jamaican restaurant serving traditional dishes and the other side is a bakery. I also noticed that there where 4 workers in the bakery, one worker was helping a customer, a second taking pictures of the product, a third singing and walking around, and a fourth was putting pastries out. NO ONE acknowledged me or any other person that came in after me. I guess the assumptions are that the customer doesn't have a choice, so they have a definite sale. The gentleman finally finished and waited on me. The cake I chose was vanilla with white icing and red.(Pictured) The cake was very delicious and semi sweet weighing more on the less sweet side. The improvements needed are, greeting your customers or potential customers when they come in. Even if the worker has no intention of servicing the customer. Just another day! I went here for the first time today after always hearing good reviews. The place had a line but it moved fairly quickly. There was a variety of foods available to try including oxtail, jerk chicken, fish, curry chicken, stew chicken, etc. I tried the oxtail which was good. A small oxtail was $20, which seems a bit pricey. The jerk chicken was also good and had a nice spice to it. A small jerk chicken dinner was $8. For oxtail gravy it is an extra 75 cent. But the customer service was horrible. Both employees were rolling their eyes and obviously impatient when a customer had a question or was indecisive. I had to ask one of the employees what her attitude was for after she had to repeat her question because I didn't hear her the first time. DO NOT ORDER ANYTHING FROM THEM. I ordered a birthday cake from them and it was horrible. It was not ready by pick up time. The icing, frosting and lettering was completely wrong on the cake. When they went back to fix it , they just scraped off the icing and just wrote letters. They misspelled the name wrong on the cake for the second time. When they scraped off the frosting, instead of fixing the cake by adding more frosting, they left it bare, so parts of the cake had no frosting on it. Customer service was horrible and lazy. They have to have a different chef or change the recipe bc I found the food to be a little on the bland side. Other than that I have been here countless time since I moved in the area 7 years ago. They serve food buffet style and it's pretty good. Sometimes it's a long line and they have a very decent selection of Jamaican food. I go there for porridge sometimes and sometimes soup. Today I got curry shrimp and soup and a ginger bear and a fruit punch from tropical rhythm. Their prices sometimes I think is high but I literally walked from the Door to her and chose here over the Door definitely better price points. Added bonus is that they're a bakery so they have cake. A family friend recommended this place to me. For me, I love Rasta Pasta and I haven't had it in a while, so as soon as I saw this place sells Rasta Pasta, had to try it. From the workers to the food to the atmosphere it was great. The workers were exceptional and the food was amazing. I of course had to order their Rasta Pasta and I loved it. It was so creamy and had the perfect consistency. I also ordered their oxtail and it was very good. While eating the oxtail, it easily fell off the bone which is what I love. This place has a variety of foods to choose from. I was having a hard time choosing what I wanted. I will definitely come back to try the rest of the food. I was in the mall at the Western Union and my cousin said she smells oxtails. She followed her nose and found this restaurant with a line of patient customers waiting to be served. This place is ok with me. Let me say 1st that I overlooked this place because I am petrified of "mall food" because I am afraid of food poisoning which almost claimed my life. Anyway, a a friend recommended it and I tried breakfast 1st. Compared to The Door the portions are slightly smaller and about $2 cheaper. I had codfish and fry dumplings with bananas and it was delish. Next time I had escovitch fish and spinach rice, so so so good. On this my 3rd visit I got food for my daughter and myself. Just for comparisons sake we switched up. I got Jerk chicken rice and peas and she got yellow rice. Both of us liked our chicken except for me they don't have a real Jerk sauce and they really didn't have enough spice in it. To me I would stick with The Doors Jerk chicken. The yellow rice was much fresher than the rice and peas. I added a slice of the toasted coconut pineapple cake, two of my favorite things. it was good but I couldn't eat thr filling, way too sweet. I venture out there just to get a half pound to a pound of their Sweet Chili Chicken. It's worth it trust me. I also enjoy their plantains. Best curry goat in New York State. I literally mean that!!. The rest of the food sell off!!! There is no other Jamaican restaurant right now competing with these guys. I tried the door, Sally's, OG's, smokehouse, Jamaican flavors etc etc. they can't stack up to this place. The food is fresh and hot. They have so many mouthwatering dishes. You know those places that the food is so good that you ignore the wait in line and the short tempers of the wait staff because you know when you finally get your food it'll be so right! 3 stars is being generous, this is the only restaurant without a menu posted, you basically point at what you want, and they charge you whatever they want. They have a large variety of food too choose from, which looks good but looks better then it taste. I ordered fried chicken dinner with white rice and salad. The chicken had more breading then meat, and cut into Undistinguished parts. Ordered a festival (Fried dough) $1. Was hard as a rock, and was uneatable. I've seen a team of rochdale maintaince go over look at the food, and turn away. Minutes later I see them ordering from key food hot food section, smh LoL. The food tastes OK and the portions are OK. What bothers me is the pricing (not the cost). I pass this place at least twice a week. They have a new electronic price board. For months, they had nothing, not even a flyer, and the prices seemed to change every day depending on who the cashier was. Now they have the price board with the prices, but they don't charge those prices. Oh no! They charge much more, but you don't know this until you reach the cashier, after you have ordered the food. The price on the electronic board for my red snapper dinner was $13, but the cashier said that with the tax, it was $17.42. Really? $4.42 in tax? I knew that wasn't right. It should have been $14.13. When I questioned why I was not being charged the price on the board, I was told "the price on the board not right." Other customers were complaining as well. $9.00 items were coming up at $13.04. Some people walked away, some made their order smaller, but most grumbled and paid the higher price because they had already been standing in line a long time to order. Beware of the pricing. No matter how good the food might taste, posting wrong prices on a new price board is not right. Seems like a bait-and-switch. It's not like you're getting sit-down service. This is take-out. OB's is the best place to go for a hearty meal after school, work, or on the go! With an array of Caribbean cuisine, you are bound to try something new from their menu items on each return. The buffet style presentation is appealing to the eye and allows you to see the exact food you want to eat, as opposed to blindly ordering from a traditional menu. The food always has an abundance of flavor, and they are never stingy with the serving size. I'm a veryyyy regular customer! The only room for improvement would be the speed of service. All my years of going to Rochdale mall for numerous amounts of errands and purchases. I never stop at this hidden gem because I am very skeptical bout mall food. I heard they have wonderful bake goods and custom cakes. Today I decided i give it a try since I was in the area and wanted some Caribbean food. As I joined a line there were two workers very helpful , prompt and friendly. I asked the worker if they had sweet chili shrimp she gone to the back and told me it'll be out in15 min which i had no problem waiting. Everything on the steam table was fresh and presentable. I got tempted by so many items while i was waiting. Every two mins a different meat was coming out smelling like heaven lol. I never order fish outside unless it's shrimp. But when the chef brought out the salmon and I saw the glaze sauce my mouth started to water. I couldn't wait no longer so I decided to go with the sweet chili salmon. I spent 17.00 on a drink and meal. For the price you pay it's def worth every dollar. you get a huge portion of salmon. Along with the sweet chili salmon I got yellow rice and sweet plantains. I opted out on the veggies which was cabbage since i had mixed veggies in the yellow rice. The sweet chili sauce was not to sweet nor spicy and it was a perfect consistency in the gravy. I love how lightly fried the salmon was to give it a little crisp texture then top of with sauce. When i got to work i saw how much food i got i was very impressive. I came here to pick up a cake for a co-workers birthday.. it's inside of a really shady looking "mall" in Jamaica. I came in and was completely ignored by the staff. When I asked questions about the cakes I got lots o' 'tude. I asked what was in 2 cakes and you would have thought I was a bitch with a gluten allergy in panera. Finally, I chose a red velvet cake, she boxed it up, tied it up with a string (with a lot of puffing might I add). I then remembered that I needed the cake written on (just a simple 'happy birthday') so I apologized, with a smile, and asked her if she could write on the cake. She said no and continued to argue with me that she couldn't write on the cake because she already tied it up (it's a piece of string - come on). Arguing ensued, I took my cake and left, vowing to never go back. The cake was actually pretty good - hence the 2 stars.
