Came for breakfast with my parents, left after a cup of coffee. The thing is, we were lured in by…read moretheir expansive menu, hoping for a good, filling, southern breakfast. But when we arrived, right after they opened on a Sunday morning, we were told that they only serve "what we refer to as 'brunch' on Sundays", and were handed paper menus with five items on it. Slightly confused, hoping we could still order off of their main menu, we waited for the waitress to return with our coffee (three Americanos and one latte). And we waited. And then we waited. And we waited some more. While we waited, three other parties came in, sat down, questioned the menu, then got up and left. Had it been just us that had that reaction to the abbreviated menu, I would have voted to woman up and just stay put. I didn't want to be "those tourists" who get all riled up about something local that doesn't fit their expectations. But once we (finally!) got our coffee and asked the waitress for clarification, we realized we had to go. The menu was the menu. Their sides - which are referenced on the menu but are never explained - were lackluster for the "base" and even less impressive for the "premium" options, which of course would have cost us even more money. That, paired with the uninspired and surprisingly one-note menu just drove us right out the door. My latte was at least delightful, but that's all I can say. Also, the place was likely very clean, because we were hit by a powerful smell of disinfectant and/or cleaner when we walked in. And finally, the waitress removed my menu after she saw me taking a picture of it. She didn't touch anybody else's menu, just mine.

Amazing food and service. We were looking for a small,…read morelocally owned breakfast spot and we hit the jackpot with this one.

Traveling through Kingsport we stopped into two dads for a quick lunch. I was pretty surprised as…read moreit was not the Two Dads that we had picked out from the other Yelp restaurant. Kinda confusing. The other Two Dads has a bunch of different sandwiches, wraps, pimento cheese etc. The menu is pretty limited to burgers, a couple other sandwiches, and breakfast. I got the burger and tater tots. It was fine. Nothing to write home about, but certainly a filling burger. Wife got two hot dogs with chili and fries. Her fries looked better than my tots. It looked fine. The service was dry but, fine I guess. There were some flies, but hey, every restaurant, especially this time of year has those. The most memorable thing however was the Confederate flag stating "Git R Done" on the wall and the Uncle Remus ad. I get it, you're going for that 1959s diner vibe, but I wouldn't recommend this place, especially if the other Two Dads, without the outdated decor, is open across the street.

Located on the corner of Sullivan and Charlemont, it's pretty easy to find. There is a small…read moreparking lot adjacent to the building, but the surface is pretty bad. It's paved, but there is a major broken hump you would need to drive over to get into several of the parking spaces. The hump was high enough to scrape the bottom of the vehicle. It had rained previously so there was also a six inch deep puddle next to the hump. Taller pickup trucks or SUVs could park in these spaces but not regular sedans or minivans. Other parking is available on the street, with parallel parking spaces as well as angled spaces. In general, you won't have much issue finding a space, but there were no handicapped spaces noticed. Access to the entrance door also requires a step as no sidewalk ramps were observed. This is not a restaurant issue but should be noted for the mobility impaired. We were greeted as we walked in and taken to a small table. Seating is somewhat crowded but not bad. The decor is very homey and eclectic. It also seems they change decorations based on the season which would keep the interior fresh. There were a lot of boxes of various items taking up floor space which did impact maneuverability, so please be aware as you go to and from your seat. Our server took our drink order right away and brought the drinks back quickly. We needed more time to peruse the menu and our server was very gracious and came back after an appropriate time. I did not get her name but she was very good. Our order took 10-15 minutes to arrive. The 2 eggs, meat, and biscuit with gravy was fine. The eggs were a bit undercooked from what was ordered. The sausage patty was a bit overdone and tough to cut. The gravy needed additional pepper, but this is a personal choice. The biscuit was good and easily the best part of the dish. The French toast was cooked perfectly, as was the bacon. The eggs were also cooked to order. The Jeremy's western omelet was not as expected. My dining partner did not want home fries (as included in Stacey"s western home fries bowl) but when the dish arrived it was on a bed of home fries. We re-checked the menu to be sure the correct dish was ordered and then called our server. She indicated both the Stacey's bowl and Jeremy's bowl included home fries, even though the menu does not include home fries for the Jeremy's bowl. Our server talked to both the kitchen and one of the owners to confirm and then offered to re-make the Jeremy's bowl without the home fries. We were told they made a mistake on the menu and both bowls included home fries. Apparently the Stacey's bowl does not include eggs while the Jeremy's bowl does. Since it had been some time already my dining partner did not want to wait for a re-fire. She wound up eating only about half the order, partially for time and partially because of a large amount of grease pooling on the plate. The take home container had a good amount of oil on the bottom when arriving home. Their menu does offer a decent array of dining options. The execution was a bit spotty, but the service was outstanding.

The entrance has some significant potholes so watch as you enter or leave, but the opening is very wide so you can maneuver around them pretty easily. This area is also used for the stockyards so there were several trucks with trailers but they tended to park further away from the restaurant. There are steps to the entrance, but there is a ramp on the left side as well. There is also a handicapped space at the bottom of the ramp, but you will need to walk through the gravel lot so plan accordingly. The entrance is at the bottom of a U-shaped bar. All seating is at the bar so large parties will be spread out. It you do have a large party, try to get a corner so you can talk easier. I was able to find a seat along the right side. There were quite a few regulars, evidenced by the joking between them and the staff. The place can get loud with all the conversation, but everyone is friendly and the staff is accommodating. While the kitchen is in the rear, the drinks, cups, silverware, etc. are all in the middle of the bar. This area is quite busy as all the staff maneuvers through here. It did seem waitresses were experienced and took care of both sides of the bar. The building itself is pretty run down but "well used" does not indicate dirty or unsafe, just that is has a lot of history. I ordered the biscuit with gravy and sausage and added two eggs for an additional dollar. The food came out in about ten minutes. The biscuit and gravy were very good and the eggs were cooked as ordered. The sausage was dry but was OK when added to the biscuit and gravy. My coffee never got below half a cup. It was a relatively warm morning, and the restaurant started to heat up while I was there. It appears they only have a wall air conditioner which cannot keep up with all the heat generated in the restaurant. It was not uncomfortable but could be that way in the summer. Betty's is a homey local spot with a decent breakfast for a good price.

If it was bigger and had tables, you'd feel like you were having breakfast at your grandmas house. The staff is friendly and the little time you do wait you can peruse all the wall decorations. We drove from Johnson City to Kingsport one morning looking for something quick, and as always, I trusted my Yelp peeps to point us toward something good. Big As Biscuits & Burgers is tucked inside a gas station but don't let that deter you for a second. These biscuits are no joke. We were originally thinking of a sit-down breakfast, but my partner is a full-blown biscuit enthusiast. If we see biscuits, we try the biscuits. So we stopped in, and the woman behind the counter was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We grabbed a ginormous biscuit for just over $3. She had all the single-serve jams and jellies ready to go, which I appreciated. We took it back to the car to eat. First impression: this thing requires two hands. It's massive. She had already sliced it for us, and when I opened it up, you could see the buttery pockets where it melted into the dough while baking. It wasn't ultra-layered and flaky like a laminated biscuit, but it was perfectly soft on the inside with a beautiful crunch on the outside. The flavor was spot on!!! Soft, warm, buttery and comforting. We added a little jam, though honestly it didn't even need butter. It was that good. If you're looking for a quick, satisfying bite that will absolutely fill your belly, stop at Big As Biscuits & Burgers. We're already talking about grabbing a few more to bring back to the hotel before we leave town. Sometimes the best finds are inside a gas station and sometimes a biscuit really can make your morning.
