We went for lunch last week and had our first "less than great" experience due to the service. Not sure if our waitress was having a bad day (the restaurant was not overly busy), but we felt rushed and asked her to come back for our order as we hadn't decided. Even though we apologized for the delay in ordering, it seemed that nothing was quite right after that. Waters came out later and were not refilled during lunch. Salad came just a couple of minutes before main course. The food was good but no one checked on us. Plates were taken and check was on table before everyone had finished eating. We started with two half-appetizers: Sweet Tamale Cakes (they were delicious) and Onion Rings (these were also delicious). The Chopped Salad was very good. The steaks were excellent (they were as good as any I've had). The blue cheese butter was superb! Where things went "off" was as we were eating our appetizers our salads arrived. So now we had appetizers and salads, we were about half-way into our salads and our steaks arrived. The "pace" of the food was way too fast. We asked our server about it and she apologized and noted that appetizers were a little late coming out but everything else came out on time. The courses felt disjointed. We had reservations but was seated in a booth back by the large business meeting and family with kids in the rear of the restaurant. First impressions: not a very classy place. No white table cloths. Told the waitress it was our first time here, yet she shared minimal information about the menu and specials. Appetizers: onion rings and corn fritters. Both delicious. Hubby and I both ordered the Filet Mignon. One of each size cut. He liked his blue cheese topping and chopped salad. I loved my filet. It was fantastic. Now we know that you really need a reservation so that you don't have to wait for an hour for a table. The server was very sweet and attentive. When she heard that it was my daughter's birthday she went and ordered a piece of cake with a candle and brought over some other servers to sing to her. It really made her night.. I ordered my steak medium well and it came out charcoaled. I could tell the steak was seasoned well and when cooked properly would be delicious. Unfortunately, for me that was not the case. I visited here on a Monday evening and the place was packed. Either they're really good, or the other restaurants in town are really bad!! Actually, it turned out to be one of the best meals during my 3 day stay in Kingsport. I had about a 5-minute wait to get a seat. This restaurant has homemade soups, salad dressings, onion rings, and crab cakes. Their steaks start at $23 (for choice) and go all the way to market for their prime steak. For prime, they don't specify on the menu what the cut is though. The meals start off with a bread, but since I had a late large lunch, I skipped the bread service. I ended up ordering the 10oz ribeye with a chicken and sausage gumbo and loaded baked potato. Coming from the south, the gumbo left much to be desired, and is not great, but if you're from Tennessee, then it will probably do. The steak on the other hand was pretty good and I enjoyed eating it. I was tired, so I didn't stay too long, but I felt I had a good meal that was worth the price. read more

The only reason I'm giving this place even 2 stars is because our waitress was outstandingly good. We visited The Chop House while in kingsport Tennessee last weekend, and on the advice of a friend, and because of the good ratings we decided to give it a shot. I ordered the Prime Rib with Au jus, loaded Mashed potato's, and sautéed mushrooms. My wife ordered the Mahi-Mahi, my daughter the filet mignon medallions, and my son got the New Zealand Lamb Chops. All of the red meats was ordered medium rare. The disappoint began at the first bite of my prime rib which was so dry that if it weren't for the au jus it would have been inedible. It's as if it were cooked earlier in the day or that week, and sat around drying out. My wifes fish smelled overpoweringly fishy- not a good sign, my daughters medallions were undercooked and some of them were raw...but the worst was my sons lamb. Not only was it undercooked, it was stone cold RAW in the center, every single lamb chop. We sent his lamb back right away, 10 minutes later it comes back STILL RAW. We let the manager know but she didn't see all that concerned. My son was starving at this point and just ate it anyway. Being a bit disgruntled, we passed on desert there, paid our bill and left. It wasn't until later on that night that I realized they had forgotten my Mushroom Side. I doubt I'll be visiting this place again. I get that sometimes the kitchen misses a meat check and it goes out undercooked, but sending the same dish out a second time still raw, is inexcusable. read more

We just got home from dinner at The Chop House. We live in Bristol but had errands to run nearby. To my surprise, my hubby decided to stop for dinner. I am so glad he did. First off, every time we come here the food is delicious and the service is always good. But tonight, we had the privilege of having Christopher as our server. He was awesome. Very attentive, without hovering. Refills on drinks before ours were empty. He turned my hubby on to the best filet with horseradish crust he's ever had. That is saying quite a lot, as we eat out about 2-3 times a week. I had a delicious prime rib that was hard to beat. The third time here, the food and service is simply excellent. I ordered the large sirloin steak and it was cooked perfectly. My wife had the crab cakes and she said they were delicious. There were two large birthday parties happening, but they were all respectful of the other guests and were not loud. Also, sometimes when a restaurant gets large parties, the other service drops. One of my sides was sugar snap peas. They were fresh, crisp and so much flavor. I almost felt like it was a treat from the summer garden. My husband and I were in Kingsport to attend our daughter's college championship swim meet. The drive was long and there were very few places open after 9:00pm. Fortunately The Chop House was open and close to our hotel. We were seated promptly by staff that were masked and we were not close to another table. The vaulted ceilings with wood beams lent a cozy and classy ambiance. I started out with a Whiskey cocktail and my husband had a beer. My drink was tasty and I loved the oversized ice cube. My entree of sliced tenderloin with Caesar salad was just right. I ordered a small version and it was perfect. My husband had the chop house steak burger loaded with blue cheese, bacon, mushroom, onion on a brioche bun. So good! Sweet potato fries came with it and they were crisp and delicious! Very disappointing! Fruit flies buzzing our heads, untrained server who couldn't answer questions without leaving the table and 3 overcooked steaks. My husband and I ordered medium rare. His was medium, mine was well done and gray first attempt and medium on the recook witnessed by the manager who admitted it was overcooked. After telling him I would just eat it since my family was almost done. He said something about the kitchen must be having a bad day and walked away. Nothing was comped, not even our dessert.
