Went here at the last minute on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I failed to see the prior reviews of this place, many of which pointed out the poor service. These reviews were spot on. Le Charlot means clown in French. How appropriate for the place. Yes, the service was poor and the food overpriced. When we complained about the long time to get our lunch entrees, the staff was rude and dismissive. When I spoke with the owner, he too was not respectful. I told him that he was not respectful, and when he responded to me, I truly felt he wanted to physically strike me in front of my family. There are other options on Main Street and I recommend that you avoid this place. read more

Making the effort to write to try to offset some of the negative reviews here. First of you click on some of the one star reviews you see that a lot of those reviewers go around trashing nearly all restaurants where they eat often with similar complaints about price and service. Those reviews have no real credibility to me. Le Charlot is a classic French bistro with a small, mostly traditional menu (steak frite, boueff bourginion, duck, cod etc. ) and a few unusual items Thai Mussels, chicken curry). We found the foot to be prepared very well, the service friendly and prompt and the room charming. Prices are of course high (it's the Hamptons for goodness sake) but not ridiculous. 10-20 percent above Ny suburb prices for similar places. We will be back for sure. read more

Unfortunately I didn't read the prior reviews before dining here. Nothing upsets me quite as much as a restaurant that holds itself out to be exclusive, sophisticated and expensive, and then provides CRAP food and service. I've been to so many modest diners that take much better care with food preparation. For some reason this place is hyped in Southampton (God knows why), so my friends and I (six of us) made a reservation. We ordered our over-priced cocktails when we sat down. I would say the restaurant was about 20% full at that time. It took them 20 minutes to bring us the first round of drinks. We ordered french fries as an appetizer and they came out completely cold and inedible. The waiter apologized and quickly brought another order of fries. The second order was piping hot but completely overcooked, brown, hollow, and dried out. It didn't seem logical that they would come out again so quickly... they must have stuck them in the broiler to heat them. Almost inedible as well. The restaurant started filling and it was clear from the service that they were completely overwhelmed. Our waiter was a very nice guy who was trying his best and certainly the poor quality of the food and the clear lack of management, organization and preparation was not his fault. Nevertheless, you could tell he didn't have enough support and he was stressing us all out with his own stressed out energy as he was running around trying to do everything by himself. The burgers were unremarkable, the beef bourguignon was okay (hard to screw that one up). One of my friends ordered the Mahi-Mahi medium rare and when it came out it was charred to crisp and completely dry and overcooked. We sent that one back. and another one came out that was only marginally better but still clearly overcooked and did not taste good. Terrible experience. Even if they cut their prices in half I wouldn't bother eating there again. This is the worst dining experience of my life. Arrived at 7;30, restaurant was virtually empty -no surprise. We ordered right away. An hour and a half later everyone in the restaurant had been served but us. We kept asking about our meals and the waiter and manager didn't even apologize. Very nice place on main street. I had a tasty tuna tartar and escargot which looks good and also very tasty. Our waitress was french (her name is Zoey) --hope I spell it right..so friendly and so nice ,attentive. If you go there ask for her. The other meals were tasty as well. This place deserves 5 stars .The stuff was very professional from the busser,waitress to the owner who was always around taking care of customers to be confortable during dinner. The home made ice cream is delicious!!! I will come back deffinetly!! Good job !!! read more

My girlfriend and I went here this weekend. The waiter was phenomenal and the food was to die for. We had almost everything on the menu. We started with the Tuna Tartare which was one of my favorites. The tuna was so fresh and the portion was just right. We also had the shrimp ceviche. We liked the tuna tartare so much we ordered the salmon tartare as well. We were hungry so decided to have tomato and mozzarella appetizer as well. For our main course my girlfriend had the filet carpaccio with parmagiano reggiano cheese and I have the lobster salad with grapefruit, pineapple and couc cous. We really enjoyed the meal. The best part was we were able to enjoy ice cream after because we weren't too stuffed. I can't wait to come back! read more

Wow. Wildly overpriced with very uneven food. The Cajun Mahi Mahi was dry, hot with spices but somehow absolutely flavorless. The lime grapefruit sauce made no sense and the flavors didn't meld at all. Nor did the flavors of the sauce make any sense with the fish. The cous cous was also dry and flavorless. My wife's mussels were tasty, but 50% is not an acceptable batting average. read more

I am shocked by all the negative reviews. We dinner here several times during the summer and always had a great experience. Came here again last night Sat before Valentine's Day. We got there a little before our reservation and were able to sit at the bar for a drink since the bar was empty. As people were arriving for their reservations we were asked which table we would like once we are ready to sit and our preferred table was held for us. Also the tables are very far apart from each other and we felt very comfortable. The service was great, and the food was better than we remember. We didn't see steak tar tar on the menu, but we asked and it was made for Us, was a very generous portion and was accompanied by perfect fries. We also opted for the cheese soufflé, and hearts of palm and avocado salad all of which were fresh and delicious. For entree we had the duck confit and sea bas special which were also Amazing. Overall a great experience and we can't wait to return. read more

Season after season this place never fails to disappoint. The service at Le Charlot has always been helter skelter, but this evening it reached a new low. Tonight we walked in at 8:30 pm, and were told we could seat ourselves at either of the tables in the window. After 12 minutes, we hadn't been handed menus or water, nor had anyone approached our table or taken a drinks order--anticipating an evening of frustration we got up and left, and worst of all, no one seemed to even notice as we walked out. I saw no familiar faces among the servers, and that implies something very negative about the management. Every season I get the impression that the staff at this restaurant are just left to train themselves--it never seems like there's a captain steering the ship. That's odd for a French restaurant because servers in France are generally very professional, and French restaurants are typically very well managed. Beyond that, the food is pricey and yet the taste and service don't justify the cost. I don't mind paying for an expensive meal, but I do mind overpaying for a meal that is just okay. The menu is predictable French fare, and generally good, but not great. The reason that I'm giving it 2 stars, as opposed to 1 star is that the ambience is generally nice, it has a nice bar, and they brought back the Chicken Curry this season, which I think is the best thing on the menu.....and even with that, I'm amazed at how one week the Chicken Curry is over-seasoned, and the next it's under-seasoned. Because Southampton has so few restaurants, there's a captive audience for this place, but I sure wish they'd step up their game (or that more competition would move in to force them to be better). read more

You don't get the difference between a guest and an employee? He then plopped down menus and when we thanked him and mentioned another was joining us he was silent, as though he was "punishing" us for mentioning the heat! Drinks came, they were poorly made martinis and it was time to leave. The tension I felt in this place was not conducive to digestion. I don't know about the quality of the food. Two stars is generous in my opinion. A friend and I went to Le Charlot a few weeks ago for a late dinner at the bar. The place was busy, even for after 9PM. Good bartender, service was attentive. BUT, the food was far below my expectations in quality while far exceeding my expectations in price...expensive, mediocre food at best. The bread was petrified, possibly cut the previous day. Lobster salad was dry, lobster slightly overcooked and UNseasoned, served with a heck of a lot of couscous and not much of anything else. My friend ordered a salad that was ...not memorable. Also, the owner was quite rude to friends of ours who stepped in to say hello to us. I won't be giving this restaurant a second chance. He could have approached with a bit of congeniality. We might have stayed for more drinks if he had. Oh, and the red wine was served a bit too warm, certainly warmer than room temperature. read more

Great place to eat! I am glad for once that I did not follow the Yelp reviewers. I am sorry but for a lunch $20 for app + entree is very acceptable. Also quality was excellent. My wife and I are both French so we know how it should taste and it was excellent. We had soup of the day and fish of the day served with delicious veggies. The Beet & Goat Cheese Salad was presented as a circular terrine of diced beets from a can (.89) and half a log of goat cheese (2.50) smushed together, and they called it 'salad'. $17.00 The onion soup was not made with gruyere, but maybe mozz or swiss. Very disappointed. Came in for lunch, and the staff, except for the manager, seemed to be summer interns who are around mainly to pass the time. Ordered 2 filet mignons, medium, and it took a really long time for them to come out, over 30 mins. When they did, the steaks were lukewarm and the fries were cold. We were in a rush so we just decided to eat. My steak was ok, not great, just ok, but my daughter's was undercooked and full of fat and tough nerves, so she left more than half since it was inedible, and she was nauseous the rest of the afternoon. All this while stressing over yellow jacket wasps that were behind us and flying around us inside the restaurant. We were offered no drink refills and had to flag down someone to get the check. If I could give no stars I would! I've never experienced racism in my life the way I felt when we walked into this restaurant. Mind you, I never use the racism card ever because it's never necessary unless it's obvious. My friends and I went to this restaurant after a mandatory stoke meeting (Wednesday night). I came here today and ordered the pre fixe lunch menu. It was $20 for a soup and entree. I had chicken salad for my entree. I ate two strips of chicken that tasted a bit off. We were sitting outside and I had my sunglasses on. When I cut into the third piece I looked down and realized the chicken was completely raw and pink. I told the waiter and said I don't want another salad I only want to be reimbursed. They gave me $10 off the bill. So they charged $10 for a soup and potentially getting food poisoning. On top of that my glass of rosé was $15. When you realize you serve someone RAW chicken, you refund their ENTIRE bill. I am completely appalled by the service and the food here. We were surprised aboutt our dining experience at Le Charlot this past weekend with a party of 4. We ordered drinks...... the glasses were literally only half-full. We didn't complain. We ordered 3 appetizer salads for $19 each and asked for an extra plate so that two people could split one of them. Three of the four main courses were almost inedible..... the mussels were drowned in butter, the salmon was cold and the cassoulet was extremely overcooked. Then the check came........ $334 - the drinks were each $20 and there was a split charge of $8 for splitting one of the $19 salads. We asked to speak to the manager. He told us that the drinks are $20 because they use the best brands, but in fact we had asked for House Brands, not fancy ones. He took one drink off our bill and we paid and left 15% gratuity. We felt that in light of the overall experience, that was the amount of gratuity warranted. The manager came back to our table and complained about the amount of the gratuity. First time that ever happened to us in a restaurant. To say that we were disappointed in Le Charlot is an understatement. read more

Had dinner there with my husband Saturday September 24 We started with a drink at the bar .The bartender barely acknowledged our presence. To be honest she was a little rude . Our dinner was actually good .I have no complaints about the food. My biggest complaint is with the staff. When I asked a female server if she could get someone to attend to the ladies room she said ok.When I went back it was Not attended to at all( no toilet paper no paper towels to wipe hands etc)I was then told " We can't attend to the bathroom The cleaning people will tomorrow "So basically that ment the staff were not cleaning up after themselves and then serving food - gross. The female server then went over to the bartender whispered something they both looked at me and laughed. My family went to this restaurant this past Sunday for lunch and let's just say we are never returning. I will write this review and most likely the arrogant , bully of a manage will rebuke my story but suffice to say if you have children with you, DO NOT ENTER THIS RESTAURANT . We entered the restaurant and ordered our food which did take a while to come out. The waitress was pleasant enough but a male waiter was a bit of a jerk even though not serving us. He had the sneers and the comments under his breath going on. We were there with 3 adults and 3 children aged 4 and under. My youngest was quite excited to be there( 15 months) but we were seated off by ourselves when we were seated. If any of you have young children then you know that they can be a little sloppy but we have been at many restaurants around the world and never had an issue. Lunch was almost over and I had left the table when the manager approached my wife and complained about our kids behavior. He acted as a bully towards her. She was not happy obviously but I told her it was time to go . The food was OK but the steak was put gristle. Horrible. I will say it again , DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN . I would give zero stars if I could. Thoroughly over-priced, terrible service. Literally paid $16 for a bloody mary and they charged me for a refill of my coffee! The food was bland, uneventful and not worth the price. In addition, the servers are inattentive, slow, and have bad attitudes. Met friends there a few days ago for drinks at the bar. Bartender was great, service was great and the food also very good, expensive (what isn't in the hamptons), but very good. My problem was the cleanliness of the establishment. The place is tired! They need to close clean it up and reopen. I made 2 very serious observations...bathroom was filthy and no soap, sink did not drain properly and the room looked as if it had not been cleaned in weeks. My thought is that if the bathrooms are dirty, what does the kitchen look like? The other, which I find appalling, you have to walk through the "bus area" to get to the bathrooms. Not that that is a bad thing, however, I noticed used butter ramekins next to the unused ketchup ramekins. My question is, why are they keeping that butter? It SHOULD NOT BE USED AGAIN!
