I was having crepes with my friend a few weeks ago at the Crêperie next door to Au Chalet (same owner) and inquired about possibly having a group to do fondue for my birthday. Adil (the owner) was so accommodating. He was very personable as well. He provided me with his cell phone number to coordinate the reservation. The day before I was terribly sick and we spoke to make other arrangements for the following week. He called me the day of to confirm. My friends and I had a luxurious experience. We had great service, starting with a delicious arugula salad and then two different types of cheese fondue with potatoes & bread. The red wine was amazing. I couldn't have asked for more. Took my mother and grandmother here a few weeks ago. We wanted to go early just to beat the dinner crowd. I hate to say we had a bad experience. We were the only table there and it still took a while to get food and the check. The potatoes were dry and stale as if they were cooked the day before. The sausage was dry as well. This place is an absolute GEM! Situated in the heart of New Haven, this charming hub will make you feel like you're actually in a chalet in Switzerland. It's about as authentic as it gets. The interior is all wooden with dim lighting--very romantic date spot! It is very intimate inside and there are only about ten tables. The head chef, Cameron, came and took care of our party of five. He was absolutely excellent! He ensured we had a great experience. We started with a bottle of wine (they only offer about 6-7 bottles--very small bar!) and some raclette, which was to die for! For our main course we shared gruyere fondue. It was so flavorful and delicious, and was perfect for the chilly night that we went. The owner came to check on us a few times throughout the night. This is a great date spot. I would give this 4 1/2 stars but since I can't pick a half star, will round up to five because generally has been a great experience each time. The place is beautifully decorated and has very nice management. It has a very authentic Swiss feel (we actually went to Switzerland recently and tried fondue there and it was a very similar experience.) The cheese fondue is absolutely amazing. We also can't resist getting the single portion of raclette (which is hot melted cheese scraped onto something-- we did potatoes and bread). Had dinner here this evening with my mom from Switzerland. The Food was very authentic and very good. Unfortunately the main reason For coming is for the raclette. A meal of wonderful cheese over potatoes With cornichon And pickled onions. Sadly there were no coenichon or pickled onions. Also they were out of Swiss wine. And, if that were not enough, they offer two desserts, both topped with meringue which neither were. Every part of the meal lacked something. Note to chef: . Cornichon and pickled onions are available in stop and shop and big Y and meringue is egg whites and sugar...guess where you can buy those exotic items. read more

I almost don't want to write a review, because people don't seem to have discovered Au Chalet yet, but I can't help it. It's so damn good. You'll have a choice between a small variety of dishes. Trust me-- you're not here for variety. You're here for a tried and true methodology for delivering cheese to your belly in the most delicious possible way. You can choose between a cheese fondue pot, or raclette style fondue. Raclette is the specialty. It's a type of Swiss cheese and they slice a wheel of it in half, warm the cut side, and scrape the melty part of the cheese into your plate in one big gooey blop. Mmmmmmmmmmm. The food is incredible and the service is excellent. The ambiance is that of a cozy alpine chalet. I can't wait to come here in the winter (but have no qualms about coming in the peak of summer, to be clear!) As with the creperie next door, you're here to enjoy. Great, intimate date spot (warm wooden interior that feels like a mini ski lodge), yet somewhat overpriced in our opinion. Between a 3 and a 4, but giving it a 4 for originality in NHV and potential. The food was very nice but didn't absolutely blow us away--the bratwurst platter=nicely cooked potatoes, a bratwurst, a couple gherkins, and a mini onion, with a standard warm raclette over the top. I visited Au Chalet with my partner quite awhile ago, so sadly my memory of it isn't as detailed as I'd like for my reviews. We had tried to go a few times and seemed to always come by to find them closed, which isn't uncommon for New Haven businesses to do when business is slow, but it was always frustrating. Plus, one of the nights they had closed for a private event too, so it was growing to be annoying. So, at first, I was admittedly a little biased. I was anticipating either an amazing meal or I wouldn't want to come back again (after dealing with them never seeming to be open). However, after dining there, I'd go back. We came right as they opened so we were the only diners, so our service was impeccably quick and focused (until right before we left, I believe something distracted the waiter and there was a lag with the bill, but no big deal). The raclette was wonderful. Visually, it's a lovely experience and the taste was spot on. I want to visit again and have their other dishes like the fondue that we didn't try, but I did have the sausage and potato dish with the cheese and they were wonderful. The interior is a bit cheesy on the chalet theme, but it is a lovely date spot as it's intimate and cozy dark. I'll be back sometime! read more

My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary dinner at 8 pm on a Saturday night. The restaurant is relatively small (only about 10 tables or so as others have said), so I'd recommend making a reservation in advance like we did. To start, I love the ambience inside. There is warm wood paneling on the walls and counters, with skis candles and herbs as decor, making the whole restaurant feel like a cozy chalet. The food itself was good -- the taste of the fondue with wild mushrooms was delicious and complex, but I was disappointed that the only items to dip in the fondue was bread. A plate of roasted potatoes is an additional $4. We also ordered a raclette portion -- this was delicious again, however the portion was entirely too small. I was not, however, very impressed with the service. I have been to the owner's other restaurant next-door, crêperie, and had an amazing experience there. I'm not sure what happened, but it took about 10-15 minutes for the waitress to come to our table. When she did, she said hello and asked if we had any questions about the menu. We said we did and she asked if she could come back later to address them since she had to go add some raclette to a plate at another table...bizarre. When she eventually came back, we ordered 2 glasses of wine and our food. My glass was gigantic and filled about 1/8 full, whereas my boyfriend's glass was a normal sized glass. My friend and I ordered the fondue. It was $26 per person and we were served with literally nothing but potatoes. Adorable little spot you might just walk right past without noticing. We had a girls night here recently and had a great time. We had a couple bottles of wine, mushroom fondue, and of course we had to try the signature raclette (warm cheese melted tableside onto a plate of potatoes and accouterments). I'll be honest, I'd pass on that last one (just not my thing I guess) but I would most certainly come back for more of that fondue and good conversation with friends! This is one of the only places that I know in CT that does cheese fondue and I have nothing else to compare the experience to. Also, I'm not an avid cheese fan either. So what am I doing at a cheese fondue place, when I don't drink either? Yeah, I don't know either.... We went there on a saturday night at around 5pm, it was snowing out, without a reservation. First thing to notice it is that it can be easy to miss if you are just passing by. The actual place is quite small, with only about a dozen tables. Luckily, we came at a slightly less busy time and managed to grab a table. In the future, I highly recommend getting a reservation as it started to get busy real fast. Also, since we came for dinner, the actual place was quite dark, relying mostly on candlelight. We ordered the cheese nature fondue, which came with bread and 1 serving of raclette, which came with onion, pickle, bread, and potatos. My overall impression of the taste was that we preferred the raclette. The cheese fondue was good as well but it becomes a little too much eating it just with bread. The cons: the raclette tasted better but they definitely didnt give you enough cheese. Using their super hot knife, they scrape a later of cheese which melts onto your plate, but it wasnt enough to cover all the bread/potatoes. Also, it isn't as good when the cheese chills. Another complaint we had was the wait, not necessarily for the food but for the service. For a place that tiny and given that we were sitting practically in the middle of the restaurant , you'd think that it'd be easier to flag a waiter down. We waited a while for someone to stop by but they didn't and we just decided to ask for the check from the next person we saw. I don't know if it was just us, but the waiters seemed to be more attentive to certain tables over others. Note: in case you are confused, cheese fondue serving size is for 2 people regardless of which one you choose, but the price listed is "per person". I returned to this restaurant on a Saturday night. I wondered why the place was so empty? I was very disappointed. The menu that was previously limited has been reduced even further. The waiter said they were out of several items. We ordered the fondu with wild mushrooms. The cheese was bland and no evidence of any kirche or alcohol. The bread cubes were nondescript. The place is small so once word gets out reservations will likely be needed. The menu is small. You're here for the fondu and raclette. It's just a matter of which fondu to choose. We had the wild mushroom, but they all looked good. Only two desert options (chocolate and lemon tarts) small and on the expensive side. (We were too full for desert anyway). Only wine for adult beverage for now. Water and San Pellegrino were the only other choices. If a large beverage selection is important to you then this is not your place. Also should be noted that as of me writing this they are only open for dinner. Although it says open till 10:30, the server was telling other patrons that the kitchen closes at 9. We were first disappointed to get there for lunch to find that they were closed (yelp hours were wrong), but based on reviews and our love of fondue, we decided we would kill 3 hours and come back. The only thing to drink was city water or wine. Call me picky, but I don't like chlorine in my water, and I don't drink wine, and to me just having a soft drink you like, is just as much a part of your meal as the food. The waiter stated that they had no time to shop for their canned drinks, so hence nothing but wine, water or Diet Coke. Maybe they should really look at inventory and getting delivery, but this really was so disappointing to not be able to have a drink....it's pretty damn basic. We ordered an appetizer, which consisted of pickles, pickled onion, a few slices of bread, and potatoes. They bring to the table a cheese block that has been melted (amazing flavor) and then put it on the plate over these items at the table. As we had not eaten there before it would have been great when he dropped the plate off the let us know that he would be coming back with the cheese...an explanation of this unique appetizer would have been a benefit, as we sat there looking at our incomplete app wondering why no cheese. The fondue itself was average and too much nutmeg. It took maybe 5 minutes to get it the the table which was almost too quick...I like to have a little longer to enjoy conversation before I start to eat. There was no way to regulate the heat, so we kept having to take the burner out from under the pot. The two people at the front were pleasant, but all in all, I would have enjoyed Swedish meatballs at Ikea more. First and last time there unfortunately. read more

I've been to Switzerland three times, and I felt transported back there after eating at Au Chalet. Everything from the menu to the decor to the service is spot-on. Small but superb wine list, focused menu (salads, raclette, fondue, desserts) is perfection, and the cheese...oh the cheese. If you're worried another cheese place so close to Caseus won't survive, I hope you're wrong. Nobody does cheese like Au Chalet. Of course, you have to know why you're there--for two very specific traditional styles of cheese--raclette and fondue. We opted for the raclette. Before you balk at the prices, just know this is spectacular cheese, prepared perfectly, and part of what you're paying for is the spectacle of watching your server tableside as the perfectly bubbling cheese is scraped onto your plate of charcuterie. In theory you could buy all these items and prepare them at home, but I doubt anyone could treat them so expertly. Our plate came with generous portions of 4 types of sliced meats, pearl onions, cornichon, and perfectly herbed, crisp, buttery potatoes over which the entire diameter of a cheese wheel was scraped. Twice. With a basket of bread on the side. Some would prefer if the bread was toasted but I've never had it served that way in Switzerland or France. For dessert we had the lemon tart. On the smaller side by American standards but the perfect size for splitting considering we were pretty full after all that cheese and charcuterie. It was a fantastic lemon tart. It was the perfect meal. My husband doesn't even like cheese most of the time and he loved this. Come here if you want to escape New Haven for an hour. Food & Wine selection are all delicious, but not a huge variety. Great staff, well educated & experienced in what they're serving. Still relatively new, so best to get there earlier or they might run out of certain wines because they don't have a big stock. I recommend their Sauvignon Blanc or Rose', good balance of both a dry & sweet wine. Great place for a date night but not so much for a group of 8+ people. Okay, maybe I shoulda ordered the fondue. I wasn't in the mood for a lot of melted cheese, so I ordered the burger. It took at least 25 minutes. And it arrived lukewarm. Maybe just lightly above body temp. And not brown. What do they do? Steam it? It was a light gray-tan color. Then I had to wait to eat it because it turned out they pour--guess what?--melted cheese on it. It took a while for the server to melt the cheese. Apparently there is only one hunk of cheese to melt and only one device to melt it with. So then I had hot cheese on room temperature un-browned meat. The cheese, by the way, was browned. Don't know why they can't apply the same principle to the meat. They say the beef is organic, but it tasted bad: liver-y. I've had organic beef before, and it doesn't taste like this. The potatoes that came with it were fine. The melted cheese was very tasty. And not lukewarm. No sign of any salt on any of the food. Is that a Swiss thing? No salt on the table either. You have to ask. Cold unsalted food. Am I too picky? The red wine I had was fine. Tasty. Not extraordinary. Above average. I could go back and try the fondue. But I'm not encouraged to return. I take it when other diners say the atmosphere was charming they mean it's so dark you can barely read the menu. read more

I have been watching this restaurant since it opened and have been following the press and the reviews. We traveled from Providence to spend the day in New Haven and had an early dinner at Au Chalet. First, it was delicious. We had the melted cheese over perfectly herbed potatoes and other small nibbles. Fantastic! We then had a salad and finished off with fondue. The fondue was good, but only bread was served and the bread was in huge pieces that were too big to dip and eat so we needed to break them up into smaller pieces. I also think I would like the bread pieces toasted so they would have some texture with the fondue. I wish they served apples or vegetables with the fondue - but only bread. The salad was simple arugula with strawberries and walnuts. Delightful! A can't go 5 stars because our waitress kept reminding us that she really just managed the crepe shop next door and was just filling in. She was nice, but not helpful and took away from the experience a little bit. When we return - and we will, I think we'll have just the cheese wheel appetizer and a salad and a bottle of wine. Came here with my family as a pit stop before going home and the service was awful. We were in a rush because we had to return our car by 9 and had to eat quick, so we told the waiter. He kept passing by us and completely ignoring my hand motion that we were ready to order. After his eighth time passing by, I politely told him we were ready to order. He rudely told me to hold and on continued to float around the other tables that didn't need anything. Reading the menu we understood the price of our fondue to be for 2 not X2 and we were quite surprised to see we were charged double the price on the menu. I understood that the raclette portion was $8 and that was correct and priced per person. We were seated promptly for our reservation but waited 25 mins before anyone paid attention to us. We were told twice "thank you for your patience." Wine choices were unremarkable. Service was haltingly pleasant yet unprofessional. Menu pricing/confusion inexcusable. I really want to love it BUT, made a reservation for our anniversary dinner. 1st course came out and they forgot the cheese wheel ~ waited so long I actually went UP to the waitress to tell her bc she forgot to come back. Fondue was really good until the gas ran out on the heater and it got hard and cold. Again, never saw a server. Dessert was really good and the comp'd us our 1st course (which we really didn't get) and dessert. So we basically paid $130 for a bowl of melted cheese and bread. New place for fondue or raclette. Don't get too excited. It's not like the videos you've probably seen over Facebook with huge mountains of cheese. Quaint, adorable, and tasty. Great date spot or intimate dinner with friends. The menu is limited, but that is part of the charm. The raclette is a decadent experience. Potatoes cooked to perfection. Pickles and onions and side salad was as delicious as the memories of my childhood. Service was great and our waiter spoke French, which was a delight. There was a private party in their back room and the service was  continuously outstanding despite having only two people working.
