Despite this when we…read morearrived for our 8 PM dinner reservation last night the only table offered to us was probably the WORST in the entire place which included numerous outdoor spots as well. It was directly in front of and below the bar such that you could both eat dinner and drink at the bar simultaneously. Totally unacceptable. We requested a change to either outdoors or another indoor table which was away from the bar in a corner toward the front of the place. Both were instantly denied with no reasonable alternative suggested by the owner himself, short of waiting an hour for a different table to open. I understand places like to get rid of their undesirable tables but do not foist this onto patrons who have booked weeks to a month in advance! We ended up not eating there at all and went to a vastly superior spot near the FRONTENAC , LE CONTINENTAL- excellent in all aspects! Bottom line - stay away from BISTRO St- MALO- un accommodating and using totally undesirable tables so close to the bar that you may as well be drinking your dinner instead of eating it! This place is NOT recommended by me.There are numerous better choices in QUEBEC CITY with its hundreds of wonderful places to select. Who needs this type of aggravation? Zero stars from me!

What a sumptuous meal! It included: lobster tail with caviar, handmade pasta with crab and uni, wild mushrooms with egg, stuffed quail and foie gras, and chocolate hazelnut mousse. The portions are generous sized and they make sure to give time in between each course so it's definitely a good 2.5-3 hr affair. The service strikes the right balance of attentive and also providing privacy and peace to enjoy the dinner. The flavors are excellent and the quality of the food is high. The price is also fairly reasonable for the quantity of food and quality. A great restaurant in a charming city. Highly recommend a visit if in the area!

We had: - house lemonade - the foie gras seed butter and blueberry jam app; this is served on a broiche with a large amount of foie gras and homemade roasted sunflower seed butter; this was a very flavorful and filling starter for two - Poulet de Cornouailles - cornish roasted hen (the whole bird, small); was very delicate, served on mashed turnips, topped with an artistic grilled turnip and other veggies to cover the protein, it was a great experience to taste each component of the dish and have it come together well - veal flank steak with sauce on carrot puree and bitter vegetables - dessert (which changes frequently) was an artistic experience, a spiced cake with sauce, a uniquely (not my favorite) ice cream with candied bitter citrus peel served on top of toasted granola/sweetened biscuits The serving staff was super knowledgeable and presented each course and dish when served with further explanations on the ingredients, process, as well as how to best experience the dish. We cannot complain about that. Our server was friendly and very charming. The meal was beautifully paced. The restaurant itself is very noisy. The food itself was disappointing. On the recommendation of our server we started with the carrot doughnut. The doughnut itself was lost under a mountain of ricotta. I would not have known that it was carrot, except that she had told us. We ordered two other starters : I ordered the foie gras pate and my boyfriend ordered the fried oysters. The pate was served on a small layer of sunflower butter, which was unnecessary. The pate itself was surprisingly flavorless. Homemade bread and blueberry jam served alongside was quite good. The fried oysters were completely drowned in buffalo sauce, another green sauce and "blue cheese foam". I would not have even known they were oysters. They were served underneath some cucumbers and peppers and lettuce. For our main course, we shared the blood pudding, which, despite the crazy number of ingredients actually was delicious. It was the best thing we ate. It was served with homemade bacon, a roasted artichoke heart, and some mussels croquettes. Seriously a lot going on. For dessert we ordered the spiced orchard dacquoise. Another complex, and I thought overly complicated dish, that my boyfriend felt worked well. It was presented nicely, and I remembered to get a picture of it. All in all, it seemed like there's just way too much going on in each dish and no particular flavor stands out. I will have to say that prices are on the higher end, but so is the food. It's not easy to find good food in the area that doesn't classify as ´fast food'. Also most of the food in the area is poutine, pizza, burgers and chicken. It's nice to experience more unique options and the tasting menu is a must try. Some evening like Christmas and new year require reservations. Good lunch or dinner place. We never stayed in the inn but it looks charming as well. Ski mountain and st Anne Cathedral aren't far away. They are also famous for their Sunday brunch. That requires reservations as well. I know it's a thing but I have never tried it.

The dinner is in a building next door, large long tables and you dine family style and as much as you want. We enjoyed this as we met other people, both local and from another country. There was also this night a large school group. They were well behaved and we enjoyed watching them when the entertainer who was playing music got them all up for a line dance. The food was delicious and when you add maple syrup to anything it did taste wonderful. We loved it and it was an experience we are happy to have done.
