    A kilo of meat

After being in Italy a few times I learned a very valuable lesson today. Screw the pasta and get the steak! We had the bistecca alla fiorentina and it was mind blowing. I'm actually pissed we got sides and didn't get a bigger steak. Next time it will be 100% meat sweat's Service was great, everyone was very friendly.

I may not be the best person to review this place since I'm a pescatarian and this place is known for their meat. I'm giving this 3 stars because although the baked eggplant and baked sea bass was fresh. They were pretty mediocre. The wine was good but it's almost very hard to find bad wine in Italy. The service was also so-so. 1 guy was quite rude when I asked about their dishes in the menu while the other was very sweet.

I'm speechless. The food, the atmosphere and specially the sever were amazing! Mario really went above and beyond to make sure our last night in Florence was as expected. We ordered bass and Rissotto. Perfect! And we will be back for lunch tomorrow before we leave because of how amazing this place was.

Slices chicken breast (bottom) & Tortelloni (top)

First of all, the map Yelp has isn't quite correct - this is on Via Nazionale closer to Via dell'Ariento. They were able to seat us without a reservation but it seems like they prefer people to reserve their seats. Regardless, the food was delicious and the service was great! My fiancé and I started with a cheese plate (that I didn't get a picture of because we ate it too quickly). He got the Tortelloni stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach with truffle and creamy cheese sauce, and I had the Slices chicken breast with wild salad and Pecorino cheese sauce. Both were amazing but in very different ways. His sauce was very rich (which I finished off with the bread) whereas the flavors with the chicken were more subtle but still sublime. The pecorino cheese sauce was delicious, but I understand why they only included a small cup - more would have overwhelmed the flavor of the chicken itself. Finally, we split a tiramisu for dessert, which was just an incredible taste and texture. We also heard people saying that they had come by for lunch and liked it so much they came back for dinner. While I myself would rather try new places given a short amount of time in the city, I understand the temptation here. Definitely visit at least once.

Friendly and semi-casual Dinner location with great service and delicious food! Great dinner location. The front looks small but the main part of restaurant wraps around towards the back.

This was by far our best meal in all of Italy! The service was amazing, the food was to die for, and the atmosphere was perfect! We got the Fillet's and the house specials and the pear desserts were delicious as well!

    Pork steak and Swiss Chard
    Joanne A.

We were a group of four visiting Florence after spending a few days in Amsterdam and Paris. This was our first enjoyable meal in Europe. I had the pork steak and Swiss Chard and I devoured it all. My girlfriends had eggplant parm, lamb chops and beef with salad which they all enjoyed. For dessert I had the Tiramisu which tasted sooo fresh. Service and atmosphere were impeccable. A very cute and charming restaurant.

When in Florence, well, you ought to have a bistecca alla fiorentina! This place is the perfect place to do it! Service is impeccable but the food is even better. I was alone and hesitant to order an obscene piece of meat. But, well, you only live once. So I went with the bone-in! Enjoy!

This place was all around fantastic. You won't be upset coming here! (Especially if you're looking for authentic bistecca alla fiorentina). My husband and I shared the pappardelle pasta with boar- it had a very good flavor and was made with delicious homemade pasta. Then we split the bistecca alla fiorentina- to put it this way, we both agreed this was above and beyond the best steak we've had and much better than our favorite steakhouse back home. This was our first time trying this in Florence, but it was amazing and I can't think of any reason to go get it elsewhere. Worth every euro! Also, although we visited at a slow time, the service was great. I highly recommend it!! (The picture shows the steak after they cut it and split it for us)

I don't know why this place is so highly rated. The service is near to none. The food has some space to improve.

We ordered the 2.6 lb dry aged Florentine steak and gnocchi. The Florentine steak is a must try steak here. It was very juicy, tender, and it was bursting with flavor. The meat was nice and chewy. The steak was gigantic and it is bigger than my head. They first bring out the raw steak and weight it in front of you. The steak is enough to share for three people. The gnocchi was also very delicious. It was cheesy and rich. It was also in a way creamy and the cheese just melted in your mouth. One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth and eaten. The cheesecake is very famous in this restaurant. We tried it and understand why. The cheesecake was super creamy and soft. I had a great time and experience here. Definitely will be back sometime soon hopefully. This is a place I highly recommend to everyone. Come and try it out for yourselves.

He was awesome and had us laughing the entire night. We peppered him with a lot of questions about the menu, he answered everything and also accommodated my father-in-law, who is GF. He had his own GF bread basket and was able to order almost anything on the menu. We ordered a nice bottle of Montepulciano red for the table that was $48. Others had the Hugo spritz. For app I had the anchovies with roasted red pepper, sea salt and oil over grilled crostini, very good. I skipped first course and ordered the ribeye steak for my main course. Bone in, medium rare, sprinkled with sea salt and a side of onion marmalade. The steak was very good and had way less fat than I expected. The waiter suggested a huge steak for the table, but I was the only one ordering steak that night. Maybe next time. Others ordered the fillet and it was cooked perfectly, the angels and demons gnocchi, and the veal scallopini. Everybody was pleased Really cool spot with a very good wine selection, drinks, excellent food and a fun atmosphere that you don't find at many places. Nugo was an A+ server.

I went to the internet for the best Florentine steak and Trattoria Mario consistently popped up as highly rated. I reached out to the restaurant via email to make a reservation for a Friday. I wanted to get the earliest reservation possible, so the restaurant reserved me for 7:30pm, which was when they open. I was advised to show up on time - even a 2 minute delay would make me miss my reservation. I can see why Trattoria Mario was strict on reservations. They open on the dot, and then a staff member calls out each reservation at 7:30pm like a roll call. Seemed to me that if you don't have a reservation then you're out of luck, because there was no waitlist and the restaurant small and space was limited. Service was great. Our waitress was highly attentive and got us in/out of the restaurant quickly, which was what we were going for. Food came out in a timely manner. We ordered the penne al ragu, salad misto, and a Florentine steak to share. The penne was perfectly al dente, and I liked the meat sauce. I did find the pasta sauce salty, but it could've came from the grated parmesan. The saltiness was not a fluke. The Florentine steak was just pure beef and a ton of salt... too much salt for my liking. I also decided that I'm not a fan of Florentine steak in general.

This restaurant is such a VIBE. Cozy, romantic and a total scene. Service was great as was the food. It was tough because there was so much on the menu that I wanted to try but we couldn't not order the pear ravioli and the Florentine steak. If I went back I would want to try the ossobuco which I saw at the table next to us and looked dynamite. If you only had one night in Florence this is the restaurant I would recommend.

I shared two pasta dishes with my daughter (the handmade Pappardelle with Maremman Wild Boar Ragu and the Carbonara). Both were very good but not the best we've had. Appetizers were good: Salad with pecorino cheese, oranges, pine nuts and walnuts. We ordered the Octopus appetizer as well. The Octopus was beautifully prepared and presented, but didn't have much flavor. They nailed the Espresso Martini! One of the best I've ever had! We ordered the huge Florentine steak to share between 4 of us and it was more than enough. Ultimately what knocked this review down to 3 stars and what was really disappointing was how they targeted us as tourists with the note at the bottom of the bill (see picture). It read "GRATUITY NOT INCLUDED" in all CAPITAL LETTERS. Also note it was the only thing in English on the entire bill. If it had been our first meal in Florence we might have fallen for this tactic, however it was our last. There's definitely some hostility towards tourists in Florence. Don't get me wrong, some of the people and restaurants we've visited have been very welcoming and friendly. However we recently saw tourist taxes go up significantly, and then you see tricks like this on the bill at La Giostra. This was the ONLY restaurant in Florence where we encountered this. Once jet fuel prices make flying a relic of the past I would argue that some Europeans who depend on tourists for their livelihood may not miss our presence but will certainly miss our spending. Save your money and go research the many other places to eat while in Florence.
