We were lucky to hear of this gem from some locals, and we were not let down. This was a wonderful experience in every way- the ambiance was charming, the hospitality was excellent, and the food was beyond. We got the bistecca alla fiorentina, which was beautifully tender, flavorful and juicy, and the seafood risotto which almost brought a tear to my eye. Additionally, one in our party is gluten free, and they were helpful in pointing out which items would be safe. All in all, a great find and one of our favorite meals while in Florence. read more

Wow! Wow! Wow!!!! This little restaurant delivers big on flavor and hospitality! A butcher recommended this place to us and we are so glad we went. We have the peasant ravioli and the Florentine steak. You must eat the steak rare. Omg THE BEST STEAK I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE!!! I am going to be dreaming about this steak. This place was literally behind the hotel/hostel that we were staying at and 50 feet away from a great Irish bar that we spent a couple hours at before dropping in here. The food came out fast and I did enjoy the meatballs. I just didn't realize that the entire entree was two meatballs. Probably would have ordered a second dish. read more

It's been almost a month since I had lunch here and I can't stop thinking about the lovely service and incredible food at Acquacotta. At my friend's urging, we made lunch resos, despite the menu not seeming to have many vegan options. My friend (not vegan) had been several times before... Actually on her first visit, she loved her lunch so much that she immediately made reservations for dinner. If that's not an indicator of how spectacular this place is, I don't know what is.So, if you're inclined to skim over this review because I stuck to the vegan options, please don't! When we had made reservations the prior evening, we asked if the kitchen could accommodate a vegan diet. "Not a problem," we were assured. After we were seated, an extremely welcoming lady came over to us (I'm not sure what her name is, but I believe she is the owner) and said, "one of you is vegan? I take good care of you." I believed her 100%. She went over the menu and described how the dishes on there could be altered. And then she uttered the magical words, "also, you tell us what you like, we try and make it for you." Even though that was enticing, I couldn't resist ordering their ribollita, one of my favorite Tuscan dishes. I also couldn't pass by a fresh baby spinach salad with sliced truffles, lightly tossed with olive oil. It's such a simple salad (normally comes with cheese), but with everything so fresh (and hello, truffles) it may happily haunt my food memories for a lifetime. The ribollita is perfect as well, extremely savory and creamy (from the bread and cannellini beans), the right amount of vegetables and spices taking the bread soup to its fullest potential. I realize the lack of bells and whistles in this review and perhaps I leave you scratching your head as to the five stars. Simple: Acquacotta is one of those places that one leaves feeling only the warmest feelings. I think that people overuse, "you feel like you're family here" (oh wait, isn't that the Olive Garden's motto?) and if you want to know the truth, I don't want to feel like I'm part of a big family at a restaurant, but with such accommodating and friendly folks behind the operation, this is one of the rare exceptions to that rule. read more

Acquacotta is a nice restaurant in the Santa Croce area of Florence. Kind of far from where we were staying but is supposed to be accessible by foot from Ponte Vecchio. Four stars for the excellent service by Ella. She was friendly and extremely nice. Far from what we've experienced in Rome and even in Florence. We got two pastas, meat to share and desserts. Frutti de Mare - mixed seafood spaghetti comes with shrimp clams and mussels and is pretty standard Shrimp risotto - pretty plate and a great selection. The risotto was cooked perfectly and the shrimp was fresh and sweet The steak that we got was kind of interesting. We should've gotten the hint when we were asked what temperature we wanted. She asked "medium or rare?". I guess medium rare isn't the norm here? Idk. Temperature of the meat was uneven. It went from rare to medium from one end to the other. We got two desserts. A chocolate cake and some type of frozen fruit cake. The chocolate is rich and decadent while the other I couldn't care much about. Sorry. I'd recommend Acquacotta for the shrimp risotto and the chocolate cake and maybe the other selections would be better. A definite four stars for Ella. read more

A family restaurant where you can taste the care and deft hand of the husband-chef, and benefit from the attentiveness and knowledge of wine pairings of the wife in the front of house. Highly recommend the pigeon and, believe it or not, the potatoes (aka French fries seasoned to perfection). If you're staying by the Florence train station, Acquacotta may be a bit of a hike but it's relatively close to Ponte Vecchio if you plan on visiting there at night. The owner of the place may be the friendliest person in all of Florence. We skipped the appetizers and order one pasta, one seafood risotto and grilled steak. - Spaghetti with mixed seafood was good but once again the noodle was a bit too all dente and undercooked. - The prawn risotto was quite good and had bold seafood flavors in the rice - The steak was cooked from end to end, well done, medium, to medium rare. I wonder if the grill had uneven flames cause it was quite inconsistent. However, still good. - the chocolate cake was very rich and delicious - one of the pictures on yelp deceived me. Don't order based on what people are calling it. I ordered what was suppose to be a creamy pastry and ended up with a half fruit cake and ice cream combo that wasn't that great. We had the wild boar ravioli, prosciutto with melons, stuffed lamb loin, stuffed rabbit and the Branzino (which they call sea bass). The host filleted the fish perfectly. If there was an option for six stars, I would be all over it. During my 11 day trip to Italy this was my favorite, and best meal I experienced. From the minute you walk in you feel the family vibe in this place. The service was amazing, Ella is a real treat, and the food was OMG status. We started with a vegetable in a fondue sauce that had me drooling and wishing we ordered at least two more servings. We washed the appetizer down with bottle of wine we chose was easily one of the most tasty we had in Italy. For the main courses I went with the lamb dish and my fiance ordered the beef covered in sauce- we each just stared at each other when we took our first bite. As for dessert we couldn't decide between three, Ella said she would surprise us and upon her return brought us tiramisu (that she explained was her grandmas recipe) and half of a piece of cheesecake and a part of a serving of a puff pastry with Chantilly cream. I'm 99% sure I will daydream about that Chantilly dessert many many times in my future. Not just amazing food but a really great experience. I highly recommend scouting out this gem! read more

Came here thanks to a friend's advice. As a Florentine we know that in the centre there are plenty of little restaurants that are made just for tourists so we tend to avoid these places if we can. Well, Acquacotta was an incredible surprise under this point of view, the food was great, mostly traditional Tuscan dishes. The restaurant is family run since many years, acquacotta is simply perfect (the soup) so are the homemade cakes. A great find, will come back for sure! read more

This place was right around the corner from us and I waited until the last night to go. We were seated quickly despite not having an reservations. This place gets booked up fast! We came later around 8:30 to 9pm so there was no wait. We ordered an the Tuscan soup and truffle ravioli, as well as the Florentine steak (we had to since we were in Florence!) anyway, our waitress warned me that the soup wasn't a typical soup consistency, and was more like a thick stew, but I read plenty of reviews coming into here and knew what I was getting myself into so I told her to bring it anyway. The soup was very very thick, it was like a porridge made of veggies. It was thick and filling! Really good. The truffle ravioli was also very good as well. The steak took awhile but it was HUGE and came with potatoes on the side. We barely finished it. Since it was so big, it came more rare than I wanted but luckily they took a few pieces back and cooked them a little more for me. We finished our meal with a tiramisu. Maybe I'm not a big fan of tiramisu but I thought it was plain. However the service here was unparalleled. Our waitress was so fun and entertaining, and the food was amazing. Ella's service is delightfully homespun, and being able to watch the kitchen adds to the feeling. This was easily one of the best Italian meals I have ever had! This is a family owned restaurant, and the staff was really friendly. It's a good thing we are just visiting otherwise I would come here all the time! I can't remember what the appetizer was called but it had vegetables and was in a cheese fondue. First time I have ever ordered a second helping of a dish at a restaurant. So try the soup! Everything else looked great on the menu. My husband and I ate here tonight while visiting Florence. It is close to the city center, but is on a quieter street and does not have outdoor seating, which was a plus for us. There have been too many close encounters with pigeons for my liking. It was nice to get away from the crowds. The service was PHENOMENAL! I am lactose and gluten intolerant, and the chef and his wife (our waitress) took great care in accommodating me. It is possible to enjoy great food in Italy with dietary restrictions! My food was absolutely delicious (I got the lamb), and my husband enjoyed his stuffed rabbit. It was a great atmosphere. Many of the dishes are old family recipes. This place was recommended to us by our local Airbnb hosts, and we were so happy we decided to try it out. If we are in Florence again, we will come back. read more

Though we arrived at 10 pm (and the restaurant closed at 10:30), they were kind enough to welcome us. We split the Florentine steak special: 1 kg of meat for the two of us. My husband tends to go for medium rare, and I like medium steak, but this was the best rare steak that either of us has ever had: juicy, tender, and delicious. For dessert, I had something that might have been called black forest cake with cherries (more like cherry mousse in a cake shape), and my husband had the meringue filled with semifreddo - both great. And the family was incredibly nice: the little boy of the owner was precocious, and the owner got us a new bottle of wine because she wasn't satisfied with the smell of the cork from the first one she opened for us. Great little family-owned intimate restaurant near the Duomo. The saffron risotto is something I'm still dreaming about. In fact, I purchased a Tuscan cookbook so I could remake the recipe at home.
