I've been going to Le Fournil for several years. I go there for the scones, especially the mixed berry (or blueberry) which are fabulous, for their quiches and, for their chicken soup which from our experience, blows away all others -- as close to home made as we've ever been able to find anywhere in Montreal. And contrary to some other reviewers, I've found that their service, the attitude of the people serving behind the counter, to be consistently helpful and polite. I had not been to their new location, which isn't really new anymore, since it's been there for many years - so better yet, I'll say it's my first visit to their Sherbrooke St. location. It's only down a few stairs; so I'd really call it a half basement as there is a lot of natural light, which adorns their baking racks right behind the front windows. They have squares, brownies, cookies, pain au chocolate, croissants and scones and more to choose from. It was mid-afternoon so many of the trays were empty, but I got the last berry scone and a darn good looking bread pudding square. They also have a bunch of quiches and even matzoh balls which were a surprise; plus a section of dry goods, including what looked like those round Italian breadsticks called Taralli. I ended up turning the bread pudding into my on-the-go lunch and boy was it satisfying. Semi-sweet with a great consistency and moistness. Needless to say I ate the whole thing. I had the scone the next morning with a hot beverage, but in truth it was pretty dry and somewhat tasteless. I'd say a proper disappointment. The service was also a mixed bag, the counter person was patient and kind, while one of the owners came across as pretty curt and unfriendly. Not the kind of personality befitting a welcoming neighbourhood bakery (seems by quick perusal this vibe is noted in other reviews). With all that to distill, choosing an overall star rating was a bit challenging so I let math decide. I just happened to be close by and was craving a treat, so I popped in and got the cinnamon roll. Lord have mercy it was decadent: dense but light at the same time, moist, and the caramelization top was rich and gooey. I've had a lot of cinnamon rolls and bake them myself, too, but this one really stands out. The sourdough flavor was gorgeous. I'm going back in a couple days and getting a whole bunch of those buns to take home with me for everyone to try up in the Laurentians... Clearly this baker (s?) has a gift. So.. you'd think in a fancy ass area of town, you'd get a killer bakery and be all like - I NEED to live here to eat these things.. Unfortunately, the best bakeries remain in the less chic areas of town because they're less likely to screw you on quality. I will give 1 star for location (convenient and nice) 1 star for quantity - these squares are HUGE 1 star removed for the sullen girl behind the counter that basically had the demeanour and attitude of - who the eff do you think you are, wandering down here to eat these squares? Eff off. She very VERY reluctantly gave me the names of the squares (if you're so annoyed doing it, then make little fking signs for them so I don't need to ask you)... 2 stars removed for the food: Lemon square - too much lemon tends to ruin any lemon dessert because it gives it a chemical-y cleaners sort of taste. It was pretty hard to eat. I scraped off most of the lemon part and it was much better. I've had better lemon squares at Trader Joes, frozen in a box. Brownie - this was more of a blondie with a hint of cocoa. I tasted NO discernible flavour of cocoa, no chocolatey goodness (cocoa costs money...), and found it kind of gluey. Not cakey. Ive walked past this place for many years and today was the day that I decided to give it a try. First of, no bathroom. Secondly, by far the worst croissant I have ever had in my life. I had high expectations since the outside looked cute, but the service was horrible. Some employee (likely the owner) was screaming on the phone while I was standing there. After taking their time to finish their call, they acted like I was an annoyance when I ordered. So disrespectful. I got a chocolatine and a piece of coffee cake. Both tasted as if they had been frozen for days and someone decided to thaw them and serve them. Not happy, and I will not be back. read more

Reason for the 1 star is because the coffee is good. The place doesn't deserve more than 1 star when you are paying good money for coffee and dessert and are being talked down to by an employee who acts like the owner by asking me "is that your husband who ordered a latte" and I responded I am not sure ... she immediately responded in a condescending tone "This is not Starbucks you know" making me wish I had actually gone across the street to Starbucks... less money and less attitude! Very poor experience... I am sorry I did not respond right away in person. We won't be visiting this non latte friendly environment anytime soon. They NEVER have any regular bread. ALWAYS out of whatever you want, and I'm talking white, whole wheat or multigrain, nothing fancy. I've been there at 8 am and they've been out of whole wheat. But they always have tons of sour dough for some reason. Why not make less sour dough and more of the popular varieties? Anyway, it's a waste of time going there because they are always out. read more

Cinnamon rolls are dry and tasteless, covered in some repulsive caramelized cinnamon gunk. Lemon squares are cloyingly flavoured. Apple pie square had tiny spots of mold on it!!!!!! Do not recommend. Looks can be deceiving! This place had me fooled by its exterior but the products were underwhelming... especially the moldy apple pie!! read more

When walking along Sherbrooke street in Westmount I dare you to resist the tempting deserts in the window of this friendly bakery. Everything looks to die for. Having just ate pastries I opted for their fresh summer pizza. Full of yellow peppers and cherry tomatoes it was very good. Their pies look amazing as well. Why Le Fournil feels it deserves to describe itself a "boulangerie" is beyond me! Their bread is a disgrace to the title - everything is wrong with it: the crust is not crispy, the inside is too dry, and flavor-wise it lacks any flavor but that of yeast. When I asked for a sourdough bread, they presented me with several options but none actually tasted like a proper sourdough - all were under fermented. I went on a Saturday morning and they had no baguettes, no croissants, nothing that you'd expect to find in a French bakery and the name certainly leads you to believe that they are such. There were other customers but they were surely not there for the bread! Some of their pastries looked interesting, albeit dripping in sugar syrup and glazes to enhance flavors. Needless to say, I will not be going back, and I'll definitely be spreading the word that they're to be avoided. This neighbourhood lacks a true French "boulangerie" (Gascogne is passable but their bread is far from noteworthy) and so I'll be taking my business over to the Atwater Market area where I can find real good sourdough baguettes. read more

If you love over the top baked goods, this is the place for you. They make amazing little pasties. My favourites are their : Smores (ginger graham base with a layer of fudge and then topped with melted marshmallows - Unbelievable! I was skeptical at first but the guy working behind the cash cut me a sample to try. I am hooked! ....2nd favourite pastry is: their Lemon squares. like a little lemon meringue pie concentrated into small square the size of a deck of playing cards. If you like lemon pie/cake etc...you will looooove the lemon squares. They also make amazing pies, cakes, cake pops etc... My only complaint about the new location is that it is on Sherbrooke in westmount, so it can be a bit hard to find a spot during the day. read more

Part 2 I brought the moldy pie back Monday morning at the opening to this place. The lady was NOT client centered. When I showed her the pie and explained, all I got was a "oh" and she promptly texted someone and sent them a picture. After several minutes, I finally got my money back-no questions asked, literally. The lady didn't apologies or provided any explanations or anything. I didn't feel there was any regret what so ever. So decided to try this cute looking neighborhood bakery. When I walked in I was taken aback since the owner was proceeding to have a loud and disturbing telephone argument. When that finally ended, i was eager to buy some pies, but given some health issues I had some questions about ingredients etc ( because they are not mentioned on the packaging ) well my questions were not well received. I was answered super rudely. Still willing to support a local business, I chose 2 pies and when i was readying to pay, I asked the for the prices . Gently mentioning to them that they seemed expensive ( considerably more than everyone else) she freaked out and yanked back the bag. Then told me to get out of the store and never come back. Still I decided to support the shop but now had to deal with the co-owner since she stormed away . Vile rude service aside it is worth mentioning that these over priced pies were very disappointing ( being polite ) Big fail. I Will never go back under any circumstances. Bought croissants and pain au chocolat. More of a Eastern European taste (as opposed to French). the croissants were heavy and dense.

Their cakes and pastries look very good, but I haven't tried them. Their bread on the other hand is not great and quite pricey, so definitely not worth it compared to other Montreal bakeries. Also, the service is very unpleasant. I might go back to try their Challah bread which looked good, and to see if the employees are always unpleasant or i just caught them on a bad day. read more
