A great little gem of a restaurant! Our hotel was right around the corner from this place & one night on our walk home I saw a ton of people drinking wine & laughing out front. I knew I had to find out what all the fuss was about, so i investigated & everyone there was telling me I had to eat here! So I asked if I could make a reservation for 6 that evening at 8pm and luckily they were able to set up seating for us. The guys working here was super friendly & so inviting, I just loved the atmosphere. When we came back at 8pm we were greeted with open arms & glasses of wine. (Well, we ordered the wine, but they helped us choose!) They presented all their delicious menu items & made suggestions per request. I especially liked that we got free water with our drink order, which seems to only happen 50% of the time in this city. And the food was also amazing! We had the escargot (in butter & pesto - SO good!) to start, followed by the lamb, sausage, and steak entrees. Each plate came with a good amount of side dishes, like potatoes, lentils, and roasted veggies. Every thing was so good & everyone really enjoyed their dishes! Prices were reasonable for what we got. Although I do wish they had more moderately priced wines - there were 2-3 bottles in the €20-30 range, but most were €40+ But hey, it's good wine & I'm on vacation! Overall, my favorite thing about this cute little place was the charming people! Everyone here was so friendly, welcoming, & attentive to us, even though we barely spoke French. This place is fantastic. I feel like I had an authentic French experience here. Decision to come here was based on previous reviews. And they're pretty accurate. Apparently there's free WiFi but I never bothered connecting. I'd say the prices are fair, food is good, staff is extremely friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting. The space-- a little tight, but I'd say "intimate" works. There's a line of booths/chairs against the restaurant back wall, meant for dining. It faces the standing bar, where you can stand for drinks/small plates. The staff-- Two men working when I went. Both were SO nice. I don't speak French, so my server explained the menu to me item by item. That was a first. The food-- Generous portions. Ordered a steak with bleu cheese sauce (a touch oily but once stirred, all good). Ordered my steak medium rare, came a little too rare but not a huge issue. Could've used a bit more seasoning. Came with what I'd call, breakfast potatoes. Nice crunch, a little lacking in salt. Server offered to select a wine for me since I didn't know what I wanted. That was nice. This place is amazing. Hands down the best experience I had while I was in Paris. The food is very reasonably priced, especially for the value. For example for 2 people with 2 1/2 bottles of wine, escargot, 2 great cuts of steak, salad/potatoes, french sausage, and 6 beers was only €110. This is unheard of. The food was amazing, the staff was amazing, and they even let us try pours of calvados. I would recommend this place 100 times more. Great representation of their country. read more

In the well-heeled area where high fashion and style rule in the 1st arrondissement area of Paris, one can still find an old-school 1930s dining and drinking establishment to absorb oneself in the yesteryears of old Paris. Just off rue Saint-Honoré is Le Rubis that does not feel outshined by its neighbors and it does not have to. Parisians come here on a workday or after shopping in the area. On the first floor is a standing-only bar with no more than 5 small tables. Men dressed in suits are standing at the bar with a glass of wine and a plate of cheese, perfect for a lunch break on a weekday. The owner who is working behind the bar greets us, opens a very narrow white door next to the bar, ushers us through and say, "Allons-y." We walk up the narrow stairs that lead us into an even smaller dining room with tables huddled close together. No English is spoken here and perhaps that's a good thing because I get to put into practice my French 101 and 102 back from college. C'est la vie. A friendly female server comes over to tell us their three specials of the day. The menu at Le Rubis is written on a blackboard and hung on the wall. As we have been doing at each meal in Paris, we order wine to go with lunch. We get une carafe de vin rouge and at Le Rubis, a carafe of house wine is served in a full-sized bottle, but half filled. Probably one of the most classic French items, we order the oeufs mayonnaise. Two eggs, each of them halved, and then covered with mustard sauce that tastes a little tart. Who would have thought hard boiled eggs could be this comforting? Another traditional French item the filets de hareng (herring fish fillets) is cured and served with boiled potatoes and pickled carrots. I don't recall eating as much lentils as I did in the last year as when the plate of saucisse lentilles are brought to our table. I'm not very much a lentil person but Le Rubis' lentilles are really kind of good in a comforting way. The saucisse (sausage) is cooked in wine and the fragrance from the wine is evident in the sausage. After we are finished, the server comes over and asks if we want cheese. Non, merci, we are full. She offers us tarte aux poires (pear tart) for dessert to which I can't say no to. A slice of the tart, nothing fancy, and just served as it is on a plate. It's homemade and that's all that counts. Hot meals are only served during lunchtime. At other times, Le Rubis serves wine, charcuterie, and cheese are served. Credit cards are accepted here but their machine reader had problems reading our US non-chip credit cards which lead us to believe that they are not equipped with upgraded software to process non-chip credit cards. Cash is of course accepted. If anyone wants a true experience of what old school is, end your visit with a trip to the toilet. It's clean and it's tiny. The fun part is figuring out the toilet flush and faucet at the sink. read more

5 stars for the owners who were warm and accommodating. We tried a variety of different wines by the inexpensive, teeny glass, and in general just enjoyed a relaxed afternoon in a really cool old school place. The other diners in the restaurant seemed stunned that we were Americans and eating there. Or maybe we were just being loud. Hard to say. The overall experience was terrific---they have a dumbwaiter which goes down (?) to the kitchen, and an old fashioned French rotary dial phone near the Turkish toilet. Maybe that sounds silly, but this restaurant was like being a time traveler. The food....lots and lots of sausage and boiled potatoes and eggs with mayonnaise. I had a lovely lentil salad......the food isn't really my taste, but it was well prepared and tasty enough. As for the "you must speak French," I say "why not?" The best tip I got for coming to Paris (and I speak pretty fluent French and have lived in Paris before) was to greet shopkeepers and restauranteurs as if you were already friends, and to speak first with a "Bonjour Madame Monsieur!" as you enter any establishment. I found that doing this put everyone in a good mood.....so much, in fact, that I'm doing it here back in Los Angeles. and if you don't speak French, my 2 cents is to say a happy "Hello Sir and Madam!" in English or some such..... read more

This place was near my hotel and looked inviting thus I decided to give it a try. From the other reviews, I want to think that it must have been my waiter and not so much the restaurant that caused me to not have a great experience. For starters, the waiter insisted in speaking to me in French although he obviously saw that I didn't understand him. I know that I am in France but considering that I was in a tourist spot AND that he spoke English I found his persistent to be unnecessary. The waiter proceeded to laugh and make comments in French to other customers which made me think he was making fun of me and my partner. The food was okay but based on the waiter we tried to finish our meal quickly and leave. read more

Come here just for the potatoes. I will be dreaming about them for a very long time! This is a small bistro with a faithful local following. The service is super friendly and makes you feel at home and at ease. My steak had great flavor but was a little tough. My husband's steak was excellent and you cannot beat the price. Great place to come to get a good meal, lunch or dinner! We came for lunch and started with the tomato salad which was amazing with their red wine vinegar. I had the sea bass filet and it came on an amazing bed of roasted veggies and spinach. It was delicious. My sister had the ham and cheese salad and loved it. Our waiter knew English very well and explained all the menu options to us while keeping playful banter. A little warm in this tiny cafe but worth it. While we were there, one of the locals came in at the stand-up bar with a new puppy in his garment bag and the crowd at the bar had fun with it. I had the leeks and the veal, along with a draft 't German beer. Very friendly bar tender and waiter squeezed us in without a reservation and speak excellent English. If you are looking for upscale ambiance don't come here. With a half bottle of wine, we ate only cheese and salumi on slices of baguette. The little French lady who ran the place spoke no English but was very charming. She is what I liked to come across in Paris, small-business owners who service the public like independent bookstores. Our little French lady kept saying 'papa' to her husband, who came in and out and who tended to things behind the bar. But it was she who bustled about like a robust robin, attentive to her customers, even those too slow to follow her quickened French. Love this place and will always return any time I'm in Paris and usually more than once! OK this is one of those places you stumble upon while strolling the streets of Paris, when you first walk in you get curious glances from the patrons. Hello are you looking for something, the owner asks, he can only assume since he does not know you that you are a wayward tourists looking for directions. We sat and on our first trip asked to sample some wine (something red), and a few apps and charcuterie plates. Looking to the menu of the day I spotted cabbage rolls and added it. What followed was a great sense that we had found a gem.. Very casual and friendly people speak to each other and discuss whatever. One one of our subsequent dinners we were seated on the second floor, beware this is a small room with low ceilings, when we first arrived the room was empty and we assumed that we were being isolated, but within a few minuted the room filled to the brim with locals on lunch break. You are seating at a long ushape table with diners on every side, the noise level reached cacophony levels but the best part is seeing all the various dishes being ordered and eaten al around. On one such trip we found ourselves seated next to a gentleman who turned out to be a diplomat, who had been told about this place by other important dignitaries. so while this place may not be found in fodors or yelp, you can be sure that the people who know good food know about it, and the unpretentious even humble owners don't let that get to them. They just do what they do and do it well. When you go always try something from the daily specials, I have yet (and Ive been there nearly a dozen times) to be disappointed. read more

First, note that Yelp's M-F hours for this place are wrong. We went on a Saturday afternoon at lunch and the place was bustling. Hardcore old-fashioned wine bar in the heart of posh St. Honoré, just a block from the Place Vendôme. Walk in and you get a sense that nothing has changed since the 1970s - maybe even the '50s. There's no English spoken here. Food and drink items are written on yellow signs all around. The wine, especially Beaujolais, which Le Rubis seems to favor, is dirt cheap for Paris. (2.20 Euros will get you a small glass; double that for an American restaurant-sized portion.) Food is served at the 5-6 small tables downstairs (I didn't know they had an upstairs!); if you just want a sandwich and/or a drink, you have to stand at the bar (no bar stools) or consume it on the street at one of their 3-4 big wine barrels (again, standing room only). Or luck out, like my wife and I did, and get seated at the one TINY little table in a very tight corner up front. And when I mean tiny, I mean TINY. But we were happy to sit! The sandwiches are fine and start at 3.50 Euros (there are a lot of other French dishes, but we were just there for snacks); the wine is hearty; the older couple running the place is friendly - and increasingly so, the more French you speak; the crowd of locals, mostly in their 50s and 60s, is very convivial. Also, you HAVE to check out the bathroom/phone area. It may be one of the last in Paris with the old school toilet that's basically a porcelain hole in the ground with places for your feet. You pull a wooden handle on a chain to flush. Yep, women are expected to use this toilet too, so ladies, don't come to Le Rubis if you're dying to pee but want to be comfortable. And yes, the public phone in the little room next to the toilet is a ROTARY phone. Le Rubis is for real. read more
