We were visiting for the weekend and decided to book brunch here. We found the food delicious. Their scrambled eggs are the fluffiest I've ever had. I had the lobster Florentine, and hubby had the Mediterranean omelette. Each entree came with crispy potatoes, crisp outside, and still tender inside. Service was attentive, in a nice atmosphere! While we didn't imbibe, the mimosas were flowing all around us! We left feeling full, and satisfied. Nice brunch for a very modest price. read more

Upon entering the restaurant, I had high hopes for a delightful dining experience. Unfortunately, the service was considerably slow, friendly, but slow. While I understand that busy times can affect service speed, the delay in our orders was quite noticeable. My party and I decided to order the steak and filet mignon, regrettably, both dishes were served overcooked, which was a major letdown. This was particularly disheartening as I had paid an additional amount for the filet mignon, expecting a premium dining experience. Considering the overcooking of both the steak and filet mignon, I contemplated sending the dishes back to the kitchen. However, I hesitated, not wanting to contribute to food wastage, especially when it seemed likely that the meals would be discarded. I am puzzled as to why both meats were overdone, and this has left me questioning the overall quality control in the kitchen. As a patron, it is disconcerting to have such a disappointing experience, especially on a first visit. While I understand that occasional lapses can occur, the combined issues of service and overcooked dishes have left me hesitant about returning to Le Sud in the future. Not sure if the oversight was due to restaurant week and they were too busy for quality control issues? Either way, not what I expected. read more

Service given by Amanda was very professional and knowledgeable. Limited liquor offerings, extensive wine list. Interesting and beautifully presented dishes. We three had the marinated olives, salad greens with cheese and grapes, delicious and seductive panisse frite (chickpea frites with a lemon vinaigrette), and chicken liver mousse as our shared appetizers. I ordered the scallops which were perfectly cooked, if a tad over-salted, plated with shishito peppers, oyster mushrooms, and flavorful garnishes. My companions both ordered the duck which was beautifully plated, and delicious! We ordered buttermilk ice cream (delicious), peach sorbet, and the Breton cake. We shared bites of the desserts. All were scrumptious. When we left, very happy and sated, we decided that Le Sud is a new addition to our list of repeats! Street parking may be difficult later in the evening, we arrived about 4:45 pm and found a space right away. I highly recommend Le Sud. read more

A friend visited from out of town, and we had the most delightful dinner experience at Le Sud ! First , the decor was perfect -- a textbook could not have described "French country" with more accuracy. Secondly, our server, Raphael was extremely knowledgeable of the menu, and guided us in the right direction for every course. He was so personable and despite it being an extremely busy night, made us feel like we were his only table. Third, and most important, the food was delicious. The fava bean creme fraiche was unexpectedly my favorite dish of the evening. It tasted like how summer love feels : bright and delicate. So glad that we discovered Le Sud. It came recommend via a Lakeview Facebook group, and we were able to snag a reservation, which felt like a feat given they always seemed to be booked. As luck would have it, they are able to seat us outdoors on a beautiful May Chicago night. Ambiance was fantastic ans the food even more so. I had the salmon, which was perfectly cooked. Literally haven't had salmon seasoned so well in a long time. My husband had the beef, which was also perfectly seasoned. We split the crème brûlée for dessert - heavenly. Will definitely be back. Stale bread starter, over charred octopus not charred burned, truly miserable cut of unchewable steak but to end it all a likely day old donut. Yeah I order it and it said donut but really?? Nothing close to fresh or flavorful. Presentation a donut on a plate with half a strawberry. And Yeah again it said donut and I ordered it. Wanted so much to like it. The fried artichokes and kale salad were both huge hits. Loved the warm French bread too and decent service: The entrees though (simply grilled fish and scallops were big misses though). A little cold, over cooked and just not good. The manager removed one of them from the bill proactively and offered free coffee and dessert (creme brûlée which was also bad) but this place has to keep working out it's kinks to compete with the better French places out there. read more

Fabulous Brunch! I recently hosted a small family brunch to give my extended family an opportunity to meet our 2 month old baby grandson. Owner/Events Manager Sandy was easy to reach and most helpful in advising on menu selections. Special dietary requests were cheerfully accommodated. The timing of our event was such that the Holiday decorations had just gone up and the first snowflakes of the season were falling outside the picture window. We had a cozy, semi-private space in the front of this lovely restaurant. The ambiance plus the delicious food and hard-working staff elevated the whole experience to amazing. Servers Tim and Brandon and others were extremely friendly and attentive and kept guests happy with bottomless Mimosas and other festive beverages and platters of brunch favorites. With food this great and the perfect atmosphere you just know something had to be lacking, wrong! Restrooms were clean and service was superb! My friend and I visited Le Sud earlier this year for CRW. We started our meals with the roasted sunchokes and arugula salad. The arugula salad, but the sunchokes were outstanding. First of all, I've only had sunchokes another time in my life (I think) but the roasted sunchokes at Le Sud were so flavorful and addictive that it is now my favorite vegetable. If anyone knows where I can buy these little suckers in the grocery store, please let me know ASAP. Moving on to the main entrees, my friend and I both got the duck breast. To no fault of Le Sud, I did not love it. I always forget that the only duck I like is Chinese roasted duck. Duck, cooked Western style, is usually too rare for my liking. The flavors of the glaze and the lentils were great though. Finally, we loved the chocolate mousse but the Basque cake was really not good. I would come back to try different dishes next time...or maybe just get a couple of bowls of sunchokes. read more

We had a great weekday dinner recently at Le Sud. It was a lovely evening, and the outdoor seating was a delight. And the food was nice... VIBE: The patio was pleasant, and a lot less noisy than the dining room. As it got darker, though, I wished they had more lights out there. SERVICE: Servers were cordial and attentive (after a slow start due, I imagine, to the unexpectedly busy patio on a lovely evening). Once things got going, the food came a perfect pace. FOOD: We had a few small plates, and enjoyed everything. A fresh baguette, littleneck clams, shaved veggie salad, grilled octopus - all tasty! The only ill-conceived dish was a nicoise tartine: the tuna was overdone, and the dish was messy to eat. There's a nice selection of wines by the glass. "Le Dud" Stopped in during restaurant week and was really looking forward to adding a new favorite to our list. However, the food was just okay and over priced - even during restaurant week. The worst part was the stalking manager (potentially owner) who hovered over guests as we ate and the unkempt staff hanging out as if they were in their own living room in the back of the dining area. Lastly, the staff began to clear tables and "close up shop" before close, as if everyone was just itching to go home. People were literally just being sat at this time. Weird environment. It's ok for a weekday dinner. First star goes for the nice outdoor patio. Second star goes to the friendly staff. They had some issues in the kitchen, it took us 2 hours for 3 dishes. Looks like it was something unexpected, people next to us were notified about the delays. The dishes were ok, on a positive side it was light and fresh, with lots of greens. The presentation is cute, very similar to many other places in Chicago. Portions are 'full size', we've shared 3 dishes for 2 people plus one desert, it was just the right amount of food for us. What did we eat? Spanish octopus - very good. Mussels Provençal - could be better. This dish needs side of fresh baguette, otherwise the broth is wasted. Some mussels came close, I think the cooks should pay attention and remove them from the plate before serving. There were 2-3 'crunchy' slices of bread or croutons, but they were soaked in the broth, swimming on the bottom of the plate. Duck breast - was ok, just ok. Chocolate & Orange mousse was pretty good, not too sweet. My conclusion - onetime place, makes sense to try. No more no less. read more

Le Sud would have been perfect but my Girlfriend and I both got food poisoning. I love the atmosphere of Le Sud, it's like eating at a upscale country cottage if that makes sense. The service was amazing. Our waiter/bartender was super helpful and informative about the menu. Staff worked as a team to keep water filled and table clear. We had the baguettes and the sunchokes for apps AMAZING!!!! The sunchoke dish seems so out there but it's so so so good. The baguette and butter were also house made and you could tell. Yum! My gf had the steak frites Which she felt was cooked perfectly, and you could tell the quality of beef was superior.... the frites were more or less regular fries tho. I had the seafood stew type dish. Very very good. Rich butter herb flavor and packed with seafood. There was one type of fish that I'd never had before that was too gamey for me but overall very good! We each had a different cocktail with dinner. Can't recall the name but they were again amazing and the server was again knowledgeable. It was almost all worth my GF and I crying out of our butts for 2 days.... almost. The dining and guest experience at Le Sud is outstanding. We had an early reservation at 5:30pm. We were celebrating our anniversary (we stated in our rsvp) last Friday. Chris C. welcomed us with champagne that really made a remarkable first impression. The rest of our time was lovely as ever and we enjoyed every detail. And I also want to say everyone of the staff we encountered were super nice humans who made sure we were having a great time. Our cocktails were Floraison and Glass Joe. First course were the croquettes and shaved spring veggies. Our entrees were the scallops that were wonderfully paired w/the Burgundy Chardonnay and the trout w/the Vouvray. All thanks to Chris' recommendation. We ended dinner w/the most delectable lavender chèvre ice cream and rhubarb sorbet (wow!) paired w/a Madeira. Came here on a Thursday for their HH special ($6 select apps/drinks). For the apps we got two orders of the duck fat fries (come with a fried egg and duck fat gravy) and it was fantastic. We also got two orders of the cauliflower, which i thought was okay but my friend loved it and he got an order of the sausages which he liked. We split the duck entree and it was delicious, i'm mad i filled up on fries bc I could have eaten it all by myself. We also ordered a few of the HH drinks which were just ok so we switched to the regular drink menu. our bill with tax and tip was $200 which was pretty inline with what we expected. As for the service it was great, Soloman (sp?) was our waiter and he was great - very knowledgeable, attentive and had great recommendations. I entered in this warm atmosphere filled with the Bouillabaisse smell and I was having flashback of my childhood raised in Provence where smells of garlic flirt with tomatoes and eggplants, peppers and herbs such as Thyme and romarin. We sat at the bar and welcoming bartenders and servers glad to help us what to decide from the menu. Very French interpretation but a zap of creativity for the sturgeon on salsifis roots left me in heaven and dreamy. What else did I like? The bread home made and butter added to my snails that were on a skewer and really delicious not chewy at all. The interpretation of French cuisine is what makes it at best. Wine list is great too!
