The only part of France this place actually nailed was the decor and the slow service. The food was fine, but you're paying a fortune so I was expecting great. The oysters didn't have much flavor and a lot of broken shell. The escargot just was garlic. The steaks were cooked perfect so that was great, the Mac and cheese was very very rich but good. Service was quick to start and then one they realized we were getting 3 courses the service was no where to be found. Wouldn't spend these prices to go here.

Brunch at La Grande Boucherie felt like stepping into exactly the kind of understated French bistro you hope for, elegant without trying too hard. We went with friends and were genuinely surprised to be the first ones there at 11:30, which made the experience feel a little more relaxed and unhurried. The space itself is beautiful. The bar takes up a good portion of the first floor and is a standout feature, really something to take in when you walk in. The overall vibe leans classic French bistro: lively in design, but still polished and restrained. Service was attentive and efficient, though not overly warm, very much a no-frills, get-the-job-done style, which honestly fits the setting. Food-wise, everything was solid and reasonably priced for the atmosphere. We both ordered the croque madame, which was much larger than expected. The bread-to-filling ratio skewed a bit heavy for my taste, and notably, it didn't have that rich mornay sauce you might expect, so it leaned drier. Not bad by any means, just something to know going in. The standout was definitely the Wagyu beef carpaccio. It arrived beautifully presented on a salt block with two slices of toasted sourdough. It was one of those dishes where the flavor absolutely delivers, truly incredible, but at $28 for a small portion, it felt more like a few luxurious bites than something substantial. Overall, I'd recommend it, especially if you're looking for a chic brunch spot with classic French energy. That said, with so many great places in Chicago, I'll probably keep exploring before making a return.

A friend and I ate here before a show at the Chicago Theatre. It is two level and the second level where we sat is a mezzanine, which was beautiful. We ordered soup and salad to start and for our mains we had mussels and a steak. Everything was delicious another service was efficient and friendly.

This is an absolutely beautiful space and I wanted to love it so bad! I would still come back to try it again for dinner. However, we made a lunch reservation during a work day and we waited 30 minutes between being seated and a server coming to our table. Other tables that were seated after us were had appetizers out before we were greeted. Once our server came around, timing and service WAS very good though. About halfway through our meal, they seated a loud party directly next to us (so close our chairs kept bumping into each other). It's a HUGE space and it was pretty empty around lunch, only about 5 parties throughout. I'm not sure why they couldn't seat them literally just one more table away. I get it if it's busy but it just seemed unnecessary. The food was pretty good! Big fan of the onion soup. Very cheesy, definitely worth another basket of bread for. I had the chicken paillard and it had great flavor but I didn't love the chicken cut/prep itself, a little tough. My partner has the boucherie burger and enjoyed it! One great positive is that he had asked for no pickles and they were proactive to put the burger sauce on the side since it was very pickle forward. We did come in for restaurant week so it was $30 each for the appetizer and entree. I thought the value was right around equal, whereas other restaurants in the area had better value deals. Again, while I was a little disappointed with this visit, I would be open to giving it another try for dinner service.

La Grande Boucherie located here in Chicago. It was our first time visiting and it was a disaster! Here on Valentine's Day my kiddo & I decided for last minute plans to go visit this place for brunch. Never again, respectfully. It was so packed and when I say packed, like sardines LITERALLY! Felt like a sit down bar. We could barely move to feed ourselves or even had room on our table for drinks and entrees. One or the other, literally the tables were that small! I could hear everyone's conversation next to me behind me and beyond yonder! It was so loud and unsatisfying. Our server was a disgrace! He decided to snatched a cup of lemonade that my kid never touched out of my hand because I asked to remove from the bill! How silly. The way he responded I would have thought he was paying for our meals. Not to mentioned, he was only serving three tables including mine. The server seemed terribly flustered and unorganized. There are some people that are customer friendly and made for serving and others that are simply not. Catch the drift. I handled him appropriately and decided to tell the manager at that time and he spoke with the server briefly and handed me his card for any more concerns. Thanks, but no thanks we will NOT be back. Lastly, the manager was nice enough to take our pictures for me. We ordered the boucherie burger and bolognese pasta. Burger was tasty, pasta not so much. The pasta was Dry and the portion of the pasta was a joke! It was more noodles than sauce. I also order the raspberry cocktail . It was okay. Everything was an 1/5. No kids menu either. I just simply didn't enjoy the ambiance food nor the service. Thank gosh for candy and chocolates that made our Valentine's Day! Hahah! Perhaps another day another time, and another server.

Always love the vibe here but the food is fabulous! Love their French onion soup & those mussels & foie gras I can't get enough of! Such a nice touch when the chef comes out to say hi & check in. Now that's class!

We came on a Monday around 2pm and were the only ones in the restaurant. The server was very friendly. The french onion soup was well presented, but the onions could have been more caramelized. The fries weren't anything special, but the truffle aioli was so delicious and savory. The restaurant interior is definitely a vibe, and I'm told by my friend who's a regular that it gets very lively during happy hour and weekends.

Pretty good value for restaurant week for steak dinners. La Grand Boucherie was offering $45 for the dinner meal! We had a big party (10 people) and the restaurant gave us a private room upstairs. The only con is the room was super cold and we wish we brought our jackets. I ordered the French onion soup, flat iron steak, and the tarte at chocolat/caramel. Overall, the food was alright. I was pleasantly surprised with how big the French onion soup was and the fries from the flat iron steak were super warm. Nothing really stood out to me, but I enjoyed the vibes with my friends.

restaurant week 2026 - la grand boucherie Drinks: old fashioned 9/10 and Boucherie French Martini 7.5/10 | fiance reports the old fashioned was delicious and great orange flavor. martini was fruity and spirit forward. Fun mix up from my standard orders! 1st: French onion soup 10/10 | ohhhhhh god this was unbelievable. The crusted cheese. The full bread submerged in the soup. The FLAVOR. Yeah I'd come back just for this. $18 for a bowl on reg menu and ykw that's worth it Main: 8oz flat iron steaks 8/10 | beef girl here who has been raised on steak since '04 and this was pretty good. Seared then oven finished if I had to guess. Garlic butter was insanely good. No complaints here (but my fav steak is always one I make for myself) Add on: brussel sprouts with bacon 9/10 | perfect veggie addition. Nice balsamic glaze. Big bites of bacon. Very pleased with their take on the sprouts! Dessert: chocolate and caramel tarte 10/10 | I could eat 7 of these in a row. The ganache was supreme. The caramel gives a slight twist to the whole flavor profile. I was STUFFED and I still finished my whole dessert. Overall: 8/10. Very cohesive interior design that parallels into the menu and into staff/service interaction. this "elevated" experience is definitely a fun little dining experience. It was PACKED on a Wednesday night at 7:30 pm. We had to wait a bit for our reserved table, but I won't dock any points for that. The staff was so great here. Definitely worth revisiting in for any guests I want to impress!

    Cherrywood Maple

Do you know how I can tell La Grande Boucherie is fantastic? The bread. There is no shortage of places that, despite a potentially fantastic meal otherwise, offer a loaf which has a robust crust and an underdone interior that can be shaped like play-dough. The sliced baguette I received with my French Onion Soup was, without exaggerating, the best bread I've received in a restaurant on this continent. The crust was thin and bestowed its gentle crispness before bowing to the gods within. Within the crust lay a savory, light, airy, and most important thoroughly cooked dough, that bounced back after a little pressure, rather than devolving into a children's toy. Before we get to the food, let me touch on the drink. They run happy hour daily, 2-7p, even on weekends! From that menu, I ordered a Cherrywood Maple, a drink with Rye, Cassis, lemon/lime, and maple. I loved how this cocktail was truly unique, and unlike anything I've had before. High level, it was right in the goldilocks zone between refreshing and boozy. The interplay of whiskey, citrus, and maple+blackcurrant led to something with a little sweet, a little tart, and a lot savory. My only note is that I would have personally liked the maple to be a little more prominent, but this is entirely personal preference, and not a critique of the drink. So... about the soup: The French Onion Soup (excuse me, "Soupe à l'Oignon") was a simple yet fantastic traditional dish. Up top we find a cheese-lover's-dream amount of torched gruyere with a sprinkle of herbs for posterity. Underneath the blanket was a broth with rich, dark flavors, and maybe a whisper of red wine used in cooking (though, I could be way off). I also appreciate that it wasn't oversalted, and was heavier on savory notes than sweetness. Then, the main event, the Eggplant Gâteau. I was initially skeptical, but not feeling beef, chicken, or shellfish that night, and hearing this was the chef's mother's recipe, it was decided then and there. Some friends are always telling me to get outside my comfort zone... this is as far as I go. This dish blew me away... far far away! To start, the ingredients were of unbelievable quality! The tomatoes taste like tomatoes instead of tomato shaped, gas-ripened rubber balls masquerading as Solanum lycopersicum. The other veggies have similar notes, though the tomato was most prominent. As for the eggplant, I could have sworn I was eating a healthier lasagna! It was layered with care and perfection, and with how it was prepared there seemed to be a slightly doughy nature to the layers. Shoutout for the cheese toppings, because you really can't go wrong. When we arrive at dessert, I ordered the Basque Cheesecake. This was unlike most cheesecakes I'd had before. It was crustless (by design), and the cake part wasn't extremely dense and sweet, instead being velvety. The torched exterior did make itself known, introducing some complexity and Maillard-iness to the flavor. While just a little more contrast would have been welcome, research indicates it is a smaller portion due to being from the Restaurant Week menu, as opposed to their main menu. When it comes to service, it was excellent! The service staff, from the waiter, Dimitriy to the manager, Matt, all worked extremely well as a team. Everyone on staff (incl the host, by the way), was extremely professional, welcoming, and personable. This was especially on display when I bought shots for, and joined a newly engaged couple! All food items came out fast, and mains weren't prepared until the appetizer was finished (plus, they asked if they could start preparing it). Even how the place settings were taken care of showed the level of care that goes into creating a great experience for patrons. Finally, we have the vibe: It is as elevated and high-end as the rest of the experience. Gentle lighting, light and dark earthy tones, beautiful design in the stone, and no obnoxious blue LEDs or blaring TVs to go against an otherwise fantastic vibe. Final Verdict: The only notes/critiques I was able to levy are entirely related to personal preferences. La Grande Boucherie delivers absolute excellence across the board. Rich, flavorful, velvety, savory, and quality everything Though I ate during restaurant week, looking at their menu their prices seem reasonable.

We visited as a party of three on a Saturday evening with a reservation. While we were seated promptly, our table was unfortunately located directly next to the kitchen doors, which significantly impacted the ambiance. It was disappointing to be placed in a high-traffic area despite having booked in advance. Regarding the meal, we started with the escargot and steak tartare. The steak tartare was more like a hamburger patty, to big and thick. For mains, the scallops and fillet received rave reviews, though the bone-in ribeye was unfortunately a letdown. We finished with the crème brûlée and Paris-Brest, both of which were delicious. Overall, it was an enjoyable evening, though the high noise level is worth noting for those seeking a quieter dining experience.

A midscale "french" restaurant with over attentive service, good aesthetics and mid food. Rating 6/10 Price $60 Pros: Pretty, good service, valet. Cons: Food is not worth the price, I don't like being asked every 2 minutes if I liked the food (sometimes before I even got to take a bite. I think I was asked 7 times by 2 people over a 3 course meal.

My friend and I came here for the New Year's Eve experience and had such an amazing time, largely thanks to our bartender, Dimitriy. He was incredibly attentive, gave us great drink recommendations, and even helped teach us how to properly enjoy oysters since it was basically our first time trying them. The food was excellent, the gnocchi melted in our mouths, and you truly can't go wrong with the pomme frites. The champagne they provided for the night was also amazing, and we loved that they gave out party favors to help everyone ring in the new year. Such a fun and thoughtful touch! We stayed for about four hours because we were having such a great time that it flew by. The atmosphere was beautiful, especially with the holiday décor, and made the night feel extra special. Huge thanks to Dimitriy for helping us start the new year off right, can't wait to come back!

Unlike some places that just make variations of existing classics (except for items specifically so named, like the Old Fashioned or Espresso Martini), all of their cocktails are unique and interesting. Time for a punch card? I ordered the Maximillian the Imposter. While I'm not typically a fan of banana (except for banana bread), I thought I'd step out of my comfort zone, and I wanted to try something 'flaming'. Flaming it was! The preparation of the drink involved a surprising amount of fire. I initially thought this was just for show, but no, this translated into a noticeable smoky flavor. Beyond that, the drink was strong, not overly sweet, and an all-around delight. There was one bartender on the night I was here, and while it was busy, I was still able to get my drink in a reasonable amount of time. A guitarist sits somewhere against a brick wall and plays music lightly but energetically. Service is friendly from start to finish and smiles are on everyone's faces. The menu is pretty easy to understand. You can get a three-course meal, or you can get each entree à la carte. You have two fondue candles in front of you, one for the cheese and dessert, and the other for the oil. We chose the three-course meal, and it was delightful. We started with the cheese appetizer. You get a basket of bread and fruit and we chose the seasonal cheese to dip. The oil for our meat was then left to heat, and we received a massive platter of veggies and meats for our main course. We chose the option for all selections of meat and seafood. After trying all the meats, I would opt for the lobster and shrimp. You can also substitute the oil for a broth. I would like to try the broth for next time. In one of the shakers, Gejas makes their own meat spice mix. It's recommended to put on the meats and even the desserts. It's a mix of tangy and savory and was a great compliment to the meal. We then chose the seasonal dessert, a white chocolate with vanilla cookies. Fruit, marshmallows, and churros to dip. We were so full by the time dessert came, but we enjoyed a few bites and took it home. The three-course meal, with five types of meat, came with about 10 pieces of meat. It doesn't look like a lot of food, but it truly is, with the apps, veggies, etc, your stomach will be full when you walk out of here. They also start the entire course with a mixed salad (so technically it's a four-course meal). It was very fairly priced, as well. Initially looking at the prices, you may think it's expensive, but it truly is a value with the amount of food they serve. This was rated as most romatic restaurant in Chicago. Its ambiance gives you the romantic feel, the guitarist adds to the atmosphere, and the staff is professional and friendly. This really was a great place and we enjoyed our time and meal.

The transition was seamless, the walk through the kitchen was very cool, everyone was very friendly and excited to see guests. Our dessert came quickly to Le Mistral instead of S.K.Y. and was superb. Our waiter at Le Mistral was very friendly, gave some good advice on the cocktails, and was consistently attentive. My cocktail was just OK - sherry-based martini. I don't normally like a martini but all the ingredients actually seemed very much up my alley - the sherry, benedictine, rose vermouth. But the olive just overpowered. And definitely not worth the price of $24... Would definitely return and try the food next time as well.

I don't know if every Monday is Metal night, but it was that Monday - Black Sabbath, Nu-Metal, everything but the live goldfish. Perhaps they should advertise "Monday Metal at Mistral" if that is to be a regular thing. It does flow off the tongue. To be fair, there was a full house and the other patrons did not seem to mind. We were not looking to feel the noize, however, and so stayed for just one cocktail. Mine was a Sazerac adjacent mix, and it was very high quality. The decor is very low light, but the vibe is pretty basic - more Paint Your Dorm Room black than Parisian Opium Den black. A bit of a missed opportunity for romance.

Esmé, consistently One of Our Favorites in Chicago…read more We went to Esmé last night on a Monday and were pleasantly surprised to see both an event happening in the bar and a solid number of diners in the dining room. Not many Michelin starred restaurants can pull that off on a Monday, but Esmé always seems to have energy. This place has become one of our most reliable favorites. They change the menu a few times a year in conjunction with rotating local artists, and the restaurant itself feels more like a refined art gallery than a traditional dining room with white walls, clean lines, simple and elegant. Last night was no exception to their usual excellence. The experience is really anchored by Chris Gerber, a longtime Chicago hospitality pro, and his team. They are flawless. This is true hospitality in every sense of the word. They usually keep two signature dishes, and for good reason. The caviar supplement sounds odd on paper, but in your mouth it is absolute perfection. The cod sounds simple, but it is anything but, rich, decadent, and always one of the highlights. Everything new on this menu was also outstanding. Every course had beautifully balanced sauces that made sense with the dish, and the presentations were creative without being gimmicky or over the top. The plating always ties in with the featured artist in a way that feels thoughtful, not forced. One tip. Be careful when choosing your beverage pairing. We did not read closely enough and ended up with the more inventive pairing that included cocktails and a beer. It was fun, but afterward we wished we had gone with the higher end wine pairing instead. Bottom line. Esmé remains one of the most consistent Michelin starred experiences in Chicago. It is not just very good. It is reliably excellent every single time.

My rating of a 3 is specifically for the Restaurant Week menu though I'll say it definitely didn't…read moreinspire me to come back. I really wanted to like it; this was a nine-year anniversary dinner. Service was really attentive and friendly and I did appreciate that they brought out specific utensils for me as a left-handed person, never saw that before! The restaurant felt a bit bare and sterile, I think I was maybe expecting a little more decor on the table for a Michelin star restaurant. To echo several of the reviews below, the salad was awkward to share and scanty, the soup was good but the bread served with it felt like an afterthought, the sturgeon wasn't anything special though the sauce was quite good, and we are pretty sure the cut of beef was not wagyu or if it was it was not cooked the right way. The beef was the most disappointing part, I couldn't even chew through all of it. The add-ons were the best part - pasta was great and our dessert was delicious. But the rest of the meal was unfortunately mediocre. Hoping that others have a different experience with the regular menu!

Chicago Restaurant week. I reviewed various dining options in search of a good place for dinner…read more Reddit gave me some ideas. I'd never been to Willow Room and liked that they had a four course dinner menu, with items I liked. I was able to make a reservation for a Saturday night at 8:15pm. PARKING Parking on Halsted on a Saturday night can be a nightmare, and it did take a minute to find street parking. North of the 1800 block is busier because there are several restaurants within a two block radius. Side streets are permit parking after 6pm. Meters on Halsted are $2.50/hr. ATMOSPHERE Willow Room was pretty packed. We had a reservation for 8:15pm and my party of two was seated right away. The restaurant features a full bar, dim lighting and is nice and roomy. They have banquette seating around the perimeter, in addition to tables in the middle. SERVICE Our server, who was very nice and accommodating during our dining experience, came by and gave us our menu's. I had already decided on the RW menu and after review, my friend was interested in the Beef Wellington (not on RW menu). Our server informed us that normally the whole table had to order off of the RW menu if one person does, but said she would check with the kitchen since this was the last day of RW. Luckily, we were able to proceed with ordering from different menu's. FOOD I ordered a raspberry Cosmopolitan. I'm a Riesling/Moscato girlie, but I tasted the Riesling and didn't like it. RW dinner was priced at $60. I ordered: First Course: Caesar Salad (Typical salad, was good) Second Course: Mussels (Tasted fine, came with a baguette) Third Course: Short Rib (Could've been slightly more tender and better seasoned. I've definitely had better. Wouldn't order again.) Fourth Course: Orange Ricotta Donuts (Donuts were very good. Three were served, a few more would have been more filling.) My friend ordered a glass of Pinot Noir and: Truffle Fries (Fries were very tasty. I would order again if I went back.) Beef Wellington (The breading was buttery and very good. The beef could've been more seasoned. I wouldn't order.) Key Lime Pie (Was not sweet and had no taste. When our server came back and saw it was uneaten, she offered to take it off the bill. It should be removed from the menu altogether.) The busboys and server were very attentive. Our water glasses were always filled. OVERALL The atmosphere was nice, our server was great. Of all the food we ordered, I would order the truffle fries and Cosmopolitan again. I did leave full and did take my leftover Short Rib to go. Main dishes needed more seasoning. I would dine here again and try a different menu (brunch/lunch), or Happy Hour if they offer it.
