Pretty flowers and fun walking trails, but probably worth less than the $12 (optional) admission.

I just recently became aware of this garden's existence and was determined to go soon so we took advantage of a mild but nice day. I loved all the different flowers and plants around of course. They have a bunch in the parking lot even (which there is actually a decent sized lot). Lots of paths to wander around and there's even a little stream, some old buildings, artistic benches, fountain etc to see. It's not a huge place so you can experience it in an hour or two but it would be a nice place to enjoy lunch or something as well. Very affordable compared to most places and the staff were super friendly. It's a great place to get outside and I highly recommend checking it out.

The Leach Botanical Garden is a beautiful hidden gem in Portland area. It was very nice to know the history of the couple who bought the 4.17 acres property for $10 in 1936. Michael was our tour guide and shared more information. It was very peaceful and nice to hear the water running in the creek. Leach Botanical Garden was donated to the city of Portland in 1980. The Garden has been hit by a slashing of funding from the city of Portland, as well as the same inflation that has hit everyone else. They're cutting their staff and services to a bare-bones minimum in an attempt to just survive. Please help if you can by visiting or becoming monthly donor.

Beautiful, free garden to explore outside of Portland. Lots of different trails at different elevations and plenty of flowering trees and plants. We also saw a Banana Slug, basically the mascot of the Pacific Northwest.

I went on the Honeybee hike and absolutely loved it ! I have gone a couple of times since then and loved everyone who works there. I only wish Honeybee hike had a time slot for smaller honeybees.

Beautiful and peaceful botanical garden oasis located in SE Portland. I'm so grateful for this gem. The tree walk is worth the visit alone. I love strolling through the pollinator garden. I would recommend taking out of town visitors here for a nature break from the city. Admission to get is very reasonable and we found parking easily. We went on a really hot and sunny day but under the shade it was just fine. There are lots of cool events here.

Believe it or not, I learned about this place on IG. It's a little bit out from where we live but I'm glad we made the trip on a sunny day! It's a beautiful and well-kept garden with lots of space for kids to run around and explore (and find the hidden dinosaur!) The wooden bridge loop is fun to walk around in for a break in the shade and it looks like they have event spaces you can rent for special events. There are little trails by the water and pockets of resting spots. Unfortunately the walking bridge was not open during visit to go to the stone cabin kitchen area but hopefully it will be when we come back next! There was a friendly volunteer who loved to share the history of the garden and they also offer guided tours as well. Come check this place out if you want a nature break or a new fun adventure!

Hi, can't believe I've never seen this excellent place before! I decided to check it out today and I am so happy I did! Although it is not in full bloom, yet being only the beginning of April, there were plenty of things bursting and coming to life! Full of old growth, trees, and plenty of plants, flowers, and a really nice creek area. This garden was established in the early 1900s by a couple of botanist. Their house is still here and it has become an event space. There is a small gift shop with tons of cool things to look at and purchase. Lots of children's books. The grounds themselves are full of manicured paths. I had the most enjoyable time in the fresh air and the rain forest. So fresh and invigorating I would really enjoy returning in the summer when everything is more in bloom. The staff there is very helpful and they are very nice people. There is plenty of parking and the fee to get in is very reasonable. Seven dollars for a senior :-) I'm definitely going to bring a picnic lunch next time and enjoy this wonderful outdoor space with a friend.

Went to see some fall colors at the garden on the Veterans Day weekend. The sky was cloudy, the air was chilly, the garden was going to sleep. The evergreens were so tall there was no room for the sky. Slashes of gold and fire red leaves painted the shadows.

Admission is $5/ adult. We walked around on all the paths within 20-30 min. It's nice and quiet and not crowded either. The flowers in the garden were still in bloom.

Im trying to experience every park in the area, so today was botanical garden day! Being completely unfamiliar with Leach I had no expectations, but I really enjoyed my visit. It's quaint...especially small feeling right now as a chunk of the gardens aren't currently accessible and/or are under construction. Nonetheless it's a sweet lil garden for sure. A gorgeous and prominent tree walk provides a stunning perspective of the grand evergreens that make up the park. There are also multiple winding trails throughout the property, taking you through the trees and down to the stream below. I was definitely sad to not get the opportunity to check out the cabin beyond the stream up close, but the bridge is washed out from flooding. I'll look forward to returning to see it and the buildings when renovations are complete. I'm sure spring will be gorgeous, but wintertime is still very pretty. Clearly a lot of pride goes into maintenance, as the grounds were pristine. Every employee we encountered was friendly and helpful. We even got to visit with an especially cute chicken, currently taking up residence within the garden. Leach isn't huge but it's lovely, and with a low $5 entrance fee, it's a fabulous and peaceful way to spend an hour of your time!

I really enjoy visiting Leach Botanical Garden! During COVID at least, it's been free to enter and wander their lovely grounds. A well-maintained garden with native plants and ornamentals alike, it's got a variety of zones - from forested to hillside to riverside. My favorite parts are the sky bridge through the huge pine trees, the creek side, and the adorable buildings for events or cottage core vibes. It took us maybe an hour to wander through everything we wanted to see - you could bring a picnic or book and spend a little longer. The heavy rains of winter 21/22 washed out the bridge across the river. Hopefully they'll be able to restore that soon so guests can access the other side and the miss-covered building! It's a great bonus that they've got plenty of free parking. (Enough to host a Sparrowhawk Native Plant sale, which I've also been to here!)

5/14/2023 - Renegade Opera presents Bird Songs of Opera at Leach Botanical Gardens
    Mikhail H.

I have been meaning to go here for so many years but always felt like I needed to experience it with another person. Have some lunch after or before....something. I live in Beaverton so the location is a commitment that just feels more like a non drop in for me. The last few years have also been more of a challenge with mobility for me. I have ruptured tendons that are very slow to heal but I get nervous checking out new places since I usually can figure it out but some places are not ADA friendly. I found the most wonderful excuse to grab a friend and visit. Renegade Opera did a Birdsong event where some incredible opera singers were wandering around singing some of the mo5re popular arias from various operas in the garden. It was the perfect sized group and at a lovely leisurely pace with plenty of opportunities to sit down. I will be very honest and say that this may not be the best garden to visit if you struggle with mobility because the walking paths are up and down with some stairs and gravel. I loved it for all the shade throughout the walk through and it is stunningly beautiful. There was a family having a picnic in a very nice grass area which is a great idea! They had quite the tale later probably since suddenly there was opera and a group gathering with their picnic. I was impressed and genuinely surprised just pulling up to the front of the garden. I was expecting something completely different but this was beautifully paved, groomed and looked so new. I did hear that they may have recently made improvements. All I know is this is a really great place to spend an afternoon or take a friend to have a slow stroll throughout some beautiful nature.

Portland Japanese Garden Find Your Zen... Even If You Have to Sit on It…read more The Portland Japanese Garden is one of those places that looks small on the map, and you think, "Well, I'll be in and out in 20 minutes." Yeah... that's adorable. You could walk through it in 15-20 minutes, but you'd miss half the point. I spent about an hour to an hour and a half wandering around, sitting down, taking pictures and videos, and just soaking it all in. There are little plants tucked into every corner, waterfalls, ponds, bamboo, statues, staircases, temples, covered bridges, sand gardens, and all these little details that make you realize somebody has spent an unbelievable amount of time maintaining this place. It's less of a garden and more of a full-time job for Mother Nature with a landscaping crew. And speaking of Zen... I came across two couples literally sleeping on a bench, leaning on each other. At first I thought, "Are these people okay?" Then I figured, nope... they've achieved the highest level of Japanese Garden Zen. Everybody else is walking around taking pictures, and these folks are like, "Wake me when enlightenment is over." The location is fantastic, sitting above the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park and just below the Oregon Zoo. You can easily combine all three into a full Portland day. And apparently everybody else had the same idea because it was packed with tourists. I never really thought of the Japanese Garden as a tourist attraction, but if you're visiting Portland in the summer, trust me it is. Still, the crowds don't take away from the experience. The atmosphere is peaceful, the staff is friendly, and there's something around every corner worth stopping for. There are multiple ponds and waterfalls, bamboo groves, statues, temples, sand gardens, staircases, a beautiful covered bridge, and enough carefully placed greenery to make my own yard look like it was abandoned during the Clinton administration. The ambiance is incredible, the location is gorgeous, and for what you get to experience, I think the value is good. 100% recommend it if you're visiting Portland. Just don't rush through it. Sit down. Take some pictures. Watch the water. Find a quiet corner. And if you see somebody sleeping on a bench, leave them alone. They may have already found what the rest of us came there looking for.

The plants and water features are outstanding, and it is such a delight to just wander around and soak it all in. Really, what can I say that hasn't been said by many other visitors? If you aren't captivated by the running water, the intricate rock gardens, or the lovely koi fish, then there is something wrong with you. This is such a gorgeous gem, and a must-see attraction in Portland, especially if you are already wandering around the Washington Park area. Some of the changes in the years since I visited are a whole new entranceway, with an amazing water foundtain. Plus, a redesigned plaza with new gift shop, cafe, and a library. Oh, and speaking of the the cafe, do try out some of the excellent teas and Japanese snacks on offer here. Plus, all the staff and docents working here were very friendly and helpful. As for a few things to be aware of: First, the parking situation is a pain. There are pay-to-park spots, but not enough for the crowds. So you should really plan to either walk over to the gardens from somewhere else in the park, or take the park shuttle service. Also, as some have also noted, the number of people visiting can sort of harsh the serenity a bit. So do your part, and be a courteous visitor, and try to keep things mellow, chill, and quiet enough for others to also enjoy. In a city so full of other gorgeous gardens, I have to say these stand out. It's a city favorite for a reason.

More than 10,000 rose bushes and over 610 varieties fill the International Rose Test Garden, including some seriously beautiful colors and varieties you probably didn't even know existed. And yes, you'll even find roses that are so dark they look almost black. It's absolutely gorgeous. I happened to visit when Portland was putting on its best hot-and-muggy summer impression, and the garden was packed with tourists. But honestly, once you're surrounded by all those roses, the heat and crowds become part of the experience. The garden has been around since 1917 and was originally created as a safe haven for European roses during World War I. Today, it's the oldest continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States, and new varieties are still tested here before they hit the market. The location is hard to beat, too. At the bottom of the trail when you cross the street, there was a porta potty. Map as well. Parking is expensive: weekend Saturday it was roughly $24 for all day! There are benches and picnic tables towards the view! Staff are very nice! Gift shop as well with snacks, plants, jewelry, postcards, and all sorts of items.

They are truly service-oriented from the moment you reach out to them, and it starts with Dan. He's friendly, responsive and provides detailed estimates immediately for whatever work is needed. We have a 5-zone sprinkler system with a combination of drip lines and sprinklers in the front and backyard. It's a funky arrangement that needed a serious upgrade. His crew (Marvin and Jose) are miracle workers! They are real problem solvers who managed to reroute some existing sprinkler lines, fix several hidden leaks and provide more water coverage in several zones. Marvin and Jose are a joy to watch. They really enjoy their work and it shows. Marvin will even sing while he's putting in new drip lines or tying off others, and nothing seems to faze him. Both men are polite, courteous and appreciative of drinks and snacks while they work. They say "Thank you, so much" every time. After spending the entire day at our home, we tested the system and everything worked well, but there were a few dry spots I noticed the next day. Dan came by today to collect payment and I showed him the areas where water wasn't quite reaching and he said, "No problem." Marvin and Jose will come back to make a few adjustments -- at no extra charge. Best of all, the new parts they install are guaranteed for 5 years instead of one. Who does that? All in all, this was a terrific experience and I wish I had hired this company 13 years ago when we landscaped our yard. I'm so impressed with them and you will be, too.

This is the first time I've had sprinkler issues so not sure how the pricing compares but overall we were happy and would recommend them. Ask for Marvin!

So, within the "park", there's Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum, International Rose Test Garden, and Children's Museum -- all require admission feee. The park and trails are free. Washington Park is hands-down one of the most incredible urban parks but I only had time to check out Portland Japanese Garden (separate review). I did walk the perimeter of the Hoyt ArboretumFor hikers and nature lovers, this is a gem.Washington Park has a free shuttle that loops around all the major attractions (seasonal). Parking can be a little tricky during peak times, so plan ahead or take public transit. The cool thing is getting around Washington Park -- there's free shuttle that's takes you to all these places within the park so you don't have to stress about limiting parking spots. Yelp Tip:There are plenty of quiet spots with tables and open lawns to relax between visits -- so do a picnic. Highly recommend carving out time in your Portland trip to explore it properly.
