What a AWESOME experience with Eat Right Atlanta…read more Before heading into a recent checkup at Emory, I saw the Eat Right Atlanta table setting up and wondered what they were offering. Once I finished my checkup and headed back downstairs, I was so excited to see two tables full of some beautifulllll produce. I had things to do and people to see... but that produce was calling my name. So I answered! I was a bit confused at first as to the process, but one of the team members took the time to explain the process quickly and it all made sense. They offer a long sheet of paper that allows you to choose produce in single-serving sizes, prepared packages and more. The offerings seem to vary based on the day, but the offering for the day included over two dozen options! I was tempted to go overboard but ended up going with: a single-serving size of bell peppers (which = 2 huge peppers), a single-serving size of mini cucumbers (5 in a bag) and a 5-variety fruit bag where I chose: peaches, cherries, kiwis, pink lady apples and barlett pears. In total I spent $32 with tax and WOW - did I get my moneys worth. The produce was plentiful, delicious and high-quality. I was so excited to get home to eat them and find different ways to use them. This is truly a wonderful pop-up to support and now that I know where and when to find them, you can bet that I'll be relying on them for my produce needs!

If you want to do some shopping for some food or maybe just some shopping for a bite to eat, then this is your spot. You'll come into the market but you have to worry about parking because it's not free but if you're in the city you already know that. They have a validation for parking system there so you can make sure you use that, which is right by the door. There's also other places to park, which is street parking, that you could use your park mobile app as well if you'd prefer to do that or if the parking lot is full. This market has tons of items and things and anything you could think of for the most part. If you are feeling steak or Caribbean food then this is your spot to go to. If you just want some French fries or some oxtail then this is going to be a great place for it as well. There's a myriad of different stalls that you can buy food at that are ready. There's also places that you can actually buy fresh meat and seafood to cook at home. If you're trying to figure out where to go for some steaks or some oxtails or shrimp, you should check this out for sure. So overall I would say this is definitely a spot you should for sure try if you're trying to try some new dishes or if you want to buy some food to make at home. If you're trying to find something that's similar to an Asian market, for example, something off Buford Highway, this would be a good spot to check out. Picking up a couple of steaks and some shrimp is easy work for a spot like this. I actually would probably go for a holiday situation to where I was buying meat to put on the grill. If you don't want to get locked into something like Publix, this is a good spot so just keep that in mind.

If you love flowers and plants but can kill one just by looking in its direction *raises hand in…read moreshame* the Metro Atlanta Urban Farm (MAUF) can give you a greener tomorrow. They've been turning brown thumbs green since 2009 at their operation in College Park on the MARTA line between the East Point and College Park stations. I'd passed by before without paying attention but I wish I'd known about them before today's MLK Day service project. During our orientation, Mr. Wilson explained that they teach people in the community how to grow their own food. Adults and children can get hands-on experience at MAUF that they can use to cultivate organic gardens of their own. They learn which vegetables to plant in each season and how to nourish the soil. They also get information about cooking and preserving/canning their produce. MAUF is focused on self-sufficiency and farming of high quality produce. Everything they grow is non-GMO and is free of hormones, synthetic pesticides and fertilizer and the majority of what they plant are heirloom seeds. They have a well onsite and they're in the process of going off the grid with solar power. They sell fresh, in-season fruits and vegetables to the public, including to several of the restaurants in the area. Low-income EBT and food stamp recipients can buy $20 worth of produce for $10 through their 2-for-1 discount program. I encourage everyone to support this organization's work to educate people in the Atlanta community and help them eat nutritiously. Today we pulled weeds inside the hoop houses, tended the compost pile and stained tables in furtherance of their mission. I plan to return (when it warms up) to learn how to grow some of my favorite veggies at home! As we were walking through we wanted seeded yellow watermelon. As we're standing at the booth another gentleman walked up to help us and said that he had some. He told us to drive up and over to his booth. Great gentleman and really appreciated talking with him. His name is Walter and gave us a good deal on the watermelons. We ended up leaving with 5 of them. Two yellow, three red ones and they were very good. We'll definitely be going back for vegetables and possibly some plants, as they had a nice variety of those as well.

We went on a Saturday afternoon (the market closes at 3 PM), and strangely, it felt empty. There's no public restroom. If you need to go, your best bet is to find a nearby restaurant and buy something to use their bathroom. If you choose to walk, be prepared for strong smells and scattered trash. There's a plant nursery tucked away in the back with beautiful flowers, but unless your car is right there, good luck carrying a big pot back. That being said, the produce is fresh, local, and often better in price and quality than what you'll find in the supermarket and other grocery stores. You might find tropical fruits and vegetables not found anywhere else.
