This restaurant was recommended to us by our guide on a boat tour at St. Mary Lake in Glacier National Park. She made mention that it was locally owned, AND it was the only one of the 3 restaurants she named which was open before 4pm, which is when we were there, so we trekked on over. We arrived behind a large party of about 8 people and were the only other table in the restaurant. They - or should I say he - took our order quickly and were willing to accommodate a special request (to have a breakfast dish after their stated cutoff time due to a wheat allergy; almost everything on the lunch menu is breaded/fried, so I couldn't eat it). It was clearly Native-owned, which I was happy to support. However, the poor guy who took our order was the only one in the place. He was doing everything: stocking, cleaning, taking orders, cooking. We were there for nearly an hour when the other party's food came out. By this point, we had figured out that he was flying solo, so we were sort of hoping our food would come out at the same time. It didn't. We asked if ours had been started yet, and it hadn't. Seeing that we were staying 3 hours from the park, we had to leave to meet up with our family without having any lunch. This could easily have been avoided with a little communication from the get-go: "Hey, a large party just came in ahead of you. Just so you know, it's probably going to be an hour or more before you see any food." We would have left then and had time to get lunch before starting our drive back to Augusta. As it was, we paid for our 1 drink, made do with whatever snacks we had, and hit the road. Can't comment on the food and the guy was super nice, so I hate to leave a not-great review, but I can't imagine what would have happened if 2 or more of the parties from our boat ride had arrived at the same time we had. I think a little work on the staffing side would do wonders. read more

Great spot on the east glacier side. The guy serving us was super nice and made sure we were taken care of. I got a Philly cheesesteak and fries which ended up being really good. I definitely would recommend to anyone looking for a family friendly place with great food. read more

If you are ravenous after an early day on the trails, this is a great choice! Family/Native run and in the morning it was a one man show. Russell was running the whole place. He was stocking when we arrived, then took our orders and also cooked our delicious breakfasts. Portions are hefty and tastes just like a home. The drip coffee is perfect and they have an espresso bar with every flavor syrup you can think of. When we were the only people in the place we chatted with Russell and he was an awesome guy. Another AMAZING meal thanks to Yelp! This meal and the people we met were one of the dining and experience highlights of our GNP trip. I'm not usually one to make small talk with restaurant regulars, but we walked in and were promptly greeted by friendly locals, as well as restaurant staff. We chatted throughout our wait for the meal, which was welcomed even by the teenagers. The fryer broke and the gentleman (Aack--didn't get his name) apologized profusely for the wait. Never sure if they were open or not. I was there two nights and traveled into Glacier NP many times. Finally one evening, I saw the OPEN sign illuminated. Ordered a burger. If you end up in Babb before the super busy season begins (aka when Glacier National Park isn't over run by tourists) you'll find a lot of stores closed but The Leaning Tree Cafe is open year round! I only went for breakfast, but 1) their bacon is huge and delicious and 2) they make gigantic pancakes. Aside from that, it's pretty standard breakfast food and options from a place that has a great local, small store vibe. No weird gimmicks. C - List. Highly Not Recommended. Stepping into The Leaning Tree Cafe is like walking into an episode of the Twilight Zone. Nothing much matches or makes sense here - from the decor, to the service, to the food and to the restroom. While eating breakfast I was wondering if they practice good hygiene, clean their grill or pans or even throw away expired food items. Their hashbrowns are from a bag, likely at the bottom of a freezer from last year, cooked in something indescribable. If you want to see something freaky, then please check this place out. Otherwise, stay clear. Next year, I will be heading back to that nice restaurant at St. Mary's - The Park Cafe - they know how to cook and please most everyone. read more

Shoulder Season is a bit of a drag in Glacier - but only a little bit. We chose (and will continue to choose) the Shoulder Season because as bad as it gets - dodgy weather, dealing with the closures of roads, restaurants, attractions, border crossings, etc, - it is FAR PREFERABLE to rubbing elbows with hoi polloi during June, July and August! Far, far preferable! Mary's delightful little boite in Babb is open year 'round. And serves breakfast all day! And a fine breakfast it is as well as a kickin' luncheon: Fish and Chips is out of this world - although we cannot understand why it is served with toast. We ate it anyway, of course! Onion Rings are out of this world. The cheeseburger was an O so healthy portion and delicious. Omelet with ham and peppers was so yummy and the Bs&G (biscuits and gravy) were EXCELLENT! I'd say practically perfect in every way. The room itself is unprepossessing - just the way I like my restaurants near the entrances of National Parks. The owner Mary is a delight. Right out of central casting and a reason to visit! PLEASE DON'T MISS THIS PLACE. We ate there twice. And on the day they are closed during the week try The Hun's Den. We really enjoyed this cafe. The cook is great and the waitress friendly, and they make you feel welcome. I read the other review and was shocked. Just because of his remark about the Park Cafe. We recently tried it and wrote a review, not recommending the Place at all , read it . Anyway I loved our breakfast at Leaning Tree and we have gone back several times. It is a quaint cafe that you would expect to find in the mountains. The bacon is delicious, and the cook knows how to cook eggs. They offer several choices of bread for your toast. I liked the hashbrowns and fresh fruit that came with breakfast. And the menu makes much more sense than the Park Cafe. This other review was from 2011, and I have heard the owners of the Park cafe have changed. I highly suggest not eating there, and highly recommend the Leaning Tree Cafe for breakfast. read more

My husband and I just returned from this beautiful area. We ate at Leanin Tree Cafe three times because the food was good, the price was very reasonable and we are fond of the type of decorations that they had. We care about the Native Americans and if we ever get a chance to go back we will eat there again. We stayed at St Marys and it was beautiful but the prices for food were a little high for three meals a day. read more
