The 365 acre preserve is the second largest open green space in Cape Coral. It was created by the State of Florida when the city of Cape Coral was being developed. The preserve has a 1.2 mile boardwalk that starts off as coastal prairie, a rare habitat in this area that that is a great area for birding. You might encounter eagles, ibis, herons, wading and migratory birds, raccoons and snakes. The closest I came to wildlife was spotting some raccoon footprints on the boardwalk. As I walked along the boardwalk the brackish water of the red and black mangroves let out to the overlook over the Caloosahatchee River. In the distance you can see Thomas Edison's estate, one of the first settlements in the area. Heading back, the boardwalk ends letting you out on a shell path lined by sand live oak, gumbo limbo, and ficus trees before you return to the parking lot. Four Mile Cove also has a small visitors center with map and restrooms. On the south side of the parking lot is a Veterans memorial area with monuments dedicated to the branches of the armed forces. On weekends from November through May there is a kayak rental kiosk. There is also two fishing piers for anglers to try their luck in the Caloosahatchee River. I enjoyed my peaceful walk on the boardwalk. As I walked I pondered how glad I was that the state has the foresight to protect this ecologically significant area. At Four Mile Cove you can enjoy the real Florida like it was when Edison first arrived.

Marissa was a joy and very knowledgeable. She spoke to us in a kind manner and was patient with us making sure we had the information that we needed. Many people surrounding the area were pretty grumpy. Marissa really was very helpful and made sure she did everything with a genuine smile. People like her are gems! She helped make what could have been a chaotic moment into a pleasant and calm time. She really made our day.

The woman known as Tootie McGregor was born in 1843 as Jerusha H. Barber in Cleveland Ohio. She…read moremarried a man named Ambrose McGregor who became the president of Standard Oil. The couple had one son named Bradford who was ill. To improve his health the doctor recommended that the family spend the winters in Florida. They picked Fort Myers because of the excellent tarpon fishing and they purchased the home next to Thomas Edison in 1892. The couple became real estate and business developers in the Fort Myers area, at one point owning more than 30 properties. Ambrose died of cancer at the age of 58 on October 28, 1900. His fortune at the time of his death was 12 billion dollars in today's rates. Bradford died in 1902, two days after marrying his high school sweetheart. With a broken heart and free time on her hands Tootie set about developing Fort Myers. Tootie was heavily involved with the hotels in the area which allowed Fort Myers to become a tourist destination. Tootie is most remembered for her efforts to improve the roads in Lee County. At the time the only road in town was a narrow strip of graded, crushed shell down the middle of First Street. Tootie struck a deal with the county where she would pay to pave 20 miles from Whiskey Creek to Punta Rassa if the county agreed to pave Riverside Drive from Whiskey Creek to downtown Fort Myers. In exchange for 200 to 300 million dollars to build the first road the city council agreed to name the road McGregor Blvd. Tootie died six months later before the road was started but her second husband, Dr. Marshall Terry completed her wishes. Dr. Marshall had been Tooties first love but he was too poor to marry her at the time and she went on to marry Ambrose but the couple reconnected after his death. Tootie and Marshall were married for six years until she died on August 17, 1912. Dr. Marshall decided to donate a fountain to the city in honor of his late wife. McGregor Blvd turned 100 years old in 2015. When completed in 1915 it was the only hard surface road in the city. It was a pebbly macadam road only 50-feet wide, but it allowed building materials to be transported to the south and west areas of towns which allowed Fort Myers to expand and grow. A visit to Fort Myers wouldn't be complete without a drive down this historic road. On McGregor Blvd is Fort Myers most famous landmark, the Ford and Edison Winter Estates. On the corner of Colonial Blvd. and McGregor Blvd. there is a monument celebrating Tootie McGregor's accomplishment. She had the foresight to see that a little town on the Caloosahatchee had the potential to become a major winter resort and tourist destination.

First thing you need to know is that to gain entry, you'll be going through a security screening very similar to that of TSA's security procedures at airports. The Deputies manning these stations were professional and thorough. It didn't take long. Reminder, no drinks can be brought through the checkpoint. After a successful screening, I found the Jurors waiting room and found a seat in a large room that could probably accommodate 300 people. I'd say the room was probably 60% filled and over the next 2 hours, at different times, a bailiff or deputy would take a large group upstairs to where 1 of 3 Judges would be starting court proceedings by first selecting Jurors. Before this however, we received important information from workers in the waiting room such as parking, reimbursement, cell phone policy, and cafeteria location. Everyone was professional and helpful. (BTW, there's a special designated parking lot, free for Jurors. You only need to show your summons to the gate attendant in order to park there. It's about a block and a half away.) I was in the third group called. We went up to the 7th floor where a circuit court Judge was planning on trying a felony case. The Judge was very well spoken, had a genuine enthusiasm for his work, and explained in as simplest of terms as possible what the jurors selection would entail. Two attorneys for the state, as well as two attorneys for the defendant, were given chances to question all 41 of us in what is known as "voir dire", in order to finalize the selection of Jurors. Just before 5pm they selected 7 Jurors out of our group. I was not one of them. Just before releasing us, the Judge thanked us and stated that we had fulfilled our Jurors Summons obligations for 1 year. My overall experience was very positive. Every one was very helpful, positive, and professional. The building and rooms are very clean and modern. One should bring a jacket or sweater as the rooms are quite cool. Hours are: Monday-Friday: 7:30am - 5:00pm

Watched a video on the court process as well as a judge made a presentation. Now just waiting to see if my group gets called. Really well organized and the staff was super nice and helpful. If you lose your summons they can still check you in if you have ID with you . Of course only a judge can excuse people from jury duty but people still asked. Think I'm going to be here all day.... Well at least they have HGTV on.....

The beach is lovely-- clean white sand and all the ocean you could want. There are so many things…read moreto do-- paddle board, boat, kayak, jet ski, swim, lay around, shell hunt (esp. at Lover's Key), bird watch... The beach is cleaned constantly and combed daily so there is virtually no trash. At low tide, you can find all kinds of critters on the beach-- we threw back many a starfish, brittle start, and sea cucumber. Please do not dig up live sand dollars or bother the live crabs! Many interesting artifacts to be found at any time-- horseshoe crab corpses, sea pork, seaweeds, etc. Many birds-- different types of sandpipers and gulls, egrets, pelicans-- some are playful or unafraid of close contact with humans. Loved the beach! Hated the island. The traffic is god awful south of San Carlos and north there is nothing but bars and curio stands. Old people or young people everywhere, not much for the middle-aged. The food offerings are terrible-- only pizza, burgers, ice cream-- certainly nothing veg-friendly or healthy to be found. In town, Ft. Myers is not much better. Probably will not go back, but if I do, I will be sure to stock up on some healthy food in Tampa or Naples to stock my fridge so I can enjoy beach time instead of having to drive off the island every night for something decent to eat.
