The new name is "Dorothy Hair". Worst haircut ever! Helen has no idea what she's doing! I decided to go much shorter but not too short. But she cut it so short that I look ridiculous now. I told her it looks nothing like the pictures I showed and she says it looks similar. I showed her pics of what I wanted(which were my own hair pictures, so I know what to expect) and she held my hair like pony tail and cut all of it at once. I thought it was okay since I was going shorter but even then she cut way too much and proceeded to keep cutting and keep making way shorter layers. Since it was a Korean shop with a higher price, I trusted them when I walked in there. I really regret my choices, I literally cried after coming home. During the haircut I already told her it's too short and she proceeded to keep making the layers shorter. After the haircut I told her how much I hated my haircut and she said "it's okay, it will grow in a month or two" who the hell says that? Oh and she asked for tip when I paid. I actually want to go get my money back. I have curly hair and she has nooooo idea how curly hair works it seems like. She cut the layers too short so it becomes even curlier and she says my hair texture is different than the picture I showed. It was MY pictures I showed. It looks different because YOU cut it too short. I'm disgusted at the service she provided and the comments she made. Instead of saying sorry, you say, "it's okay, it'll grow in 1 2 months"? This salon has changed its name. I took my boyfriend here for a quick cleanup before his grandma's funeral. Didn't expect much from it, but actually turned out really nice. I think this will be our new place as long as the gentleman named Sky is there. The difference from this guy and other places is that he cuts hair first before washing the hair. I really appreciate that because of all the hair in the ears and around the neck is usually left there after a haircut. I see there are reviews about the stylists not speaking English. Yes, Sky didn't speak much English but he knew what we wanted just by giving him keywords. The haircut cost $25, pricey but so worth it. read more

I first came here a year ago to get my hair cut and straightened (Japanese Rebonding method) and the stylist Sharon was amazing. My hair looked healthy I told everyone who asked where I got my hair done. Fast forward a year later, I went back to the this salon (take note, Sharon's work was still great after a year!) Sharon was no longer there, but another stylist, a nice man who seemed very knowledgeable worked on my hair. Unfortunately, the results were not the same. My hair is now damaged, looks like it got a bit "too cooked" My hair tangles easily, breaks easily, it feels rough. I never had this problem before. I don't know if I should go back there to fix it as they may damage it more. I called a few days after the treatment but they wanted me to go there but it is not easy for me to go there. I'm really really bummed about the condition my hair is in now. I'll have to wait about year before I can get it done (somewhere else) correctly again. You come in, you are instructed to wear a robe and taken to the shampoo area to get your hair washed - BEFORE they take a look at your hair and ask you what the issue is or what you want fixed or how you want your hair styled. They ask you this after your hair is washed and you're sitting and facing the mirror with your hair all disheveled and unkempt. So if you don't care about how you style your hair and just want a trim off your straight hair, then you'll have a splendid time. But if you're particular about your mane, even if you show a picture or drawing, there is no guarantee that they they will follow that. This is simply because I think they believe they know what is best for your hair type/texture/length. But they are not the smoothest to tell you this (they are the sharpest "no, this is not good" when I told them that I trimmed my own bangs). The language barrier is also a challenge sometimes. So it's a hit or miss. I loved going to this salon and have gone for years even when my choice stylist has left, the ones like Eunice and Skye are skilled and great. But like I said, when I want something styled in a certain way, I don't always get what I want. read more

I've come to Lee Ka Ja many times to have eyelash extensions done. You spend two hours in the lady's chair (who is so incredibly nice), maybe doze off a little and come out looking like a superstar! Eyelash extensions are $150 initially and fill-ins are $80, these should be done monthly. They come out looking extremely natural and it's well worth the money in my opinion. A couple of years ago I was coming monthly for my extensions but have since laid off on them. The salon was always packed to the brim. I went recently with a friend to have hers done & the same awesome girl was doing the extensions. The salon was not nearly as packed as it once was and the waiting area is non existent now. My friend came out looking absolutely beautiful. It's crazy what the extensions do & Lee Ka Ja is a reliable place to get the extensions done. read more

Yes, Tony did not speak English (I see other reviewers complaining about that) but he was very professional and courteous. He let his scissors do the talking. He is a hair cutting ninja. Thank you. Vaguely remember I came here 3 yrs ago for a haircut that turned out decent, so I returned last Saturday. While the service was nice and friendly, I will sadly never return. The guy who cut my hair did not understand English very well, which is a disaster for this kind of business. How can you give the customer what he/she wants if you don't understand what he/she's saying? When asked if I want layers, I told him I want some but not high up because I want something I can brush and go in the morning, not spending hrs styling. This fell on deaf ears and he proceeded to cut layers starting from the top of my ears to beneath my shoulders, perfect for kinks and curls in all the wrong places. To add insult to injury, the layers did NOT blend smoothly into each other at all. Definitely my most disastrous haircut in years. Extremely disappointed. read more

My hair is naturally super straight and super dark. I've been wanting to color it for months now, since the weather is warming up and I'm sick of my hair blending into dark-colored clothing and backgrounds. So, when my friend (who has a car) mentioned she wanted to get her hair done, I jumped and convinced her and another friend to get their hair done on the same day. We drove out to Niles and ate at Hmart, and then I got my first major professional hair coloring. The colorist (she was young, with long, highlighted hair, but doesn't speak English well--my friend had to translate) told me I should have my base dyed brown, and then she would put blonde highlights in my hair. I was a little scared, but I figured I had waited months to get to a Korean salon and got myself all the way to Niles, so I wasn't about to chicken out now. I let her do her work. The brown base color barely showed. I worried silently. Then the full head highlights went in. They came out very bright (the salon lights shined directly on the top of my head). I worried again, silently. Then a few days passed, and I now have the effect of brown hair!!! I am very excited about my new hair color and wished I had done this years ago. My friends both got digital perms. One of them has long hair and the other has shoulder-length hair, so the finished look was different for each of them. They both looked very different and very cute after the perm. This was my first experience at a Korean salon, and I'm glad I took the plunge. I will probably look around for other salons, but in the meantime, I would feel comfortable returning to Lee Ga Ja Hair Bis for a touch-up or new color. Cons: expensive, especially considering it's not a fancy salon, and the hair washing is a little rough. Also, you have to bring a Korean-speaking person with you if you don't speak Korean. read more

A friend recommended this place on a visit to chicago and i've been coming here all the way from detroit whenever my hair becomes unbearable. The place is clean, professional and conveniently located inside hmart for all your grocery needs! Its a korean salon but i never had any problems communicating what i want. Don't expect any small talks or chit chat but also don't be shy to ask for recommendations and the stylists opinion. Ask for Sky or Leo Kim. No nonsense kind of place. It's the salon inside H Mart near the entrance closest to King Spa and The Home Depot. It's an all Korean staff except for one Hispanic lady who acts as an assistant to the stylists. They all speak a fair amount of English and are shy with it, but don't let that deter you from speaking English to them. It also helps to bring in a picture of what you want. The more thorough I am with describing what I want (really, they'll understand you), the happier I am with each cut! Men's haircut is $20, women's is $30. They also do color, perms, and false eyelash applications. It helps to make an appointment. Oftentimes, I can get in the same day on weekdays; weekends are naturally busier, and my husband has gotten turned down once as a walk-in on a weekend. Also, don't expect them to be prompt with your start times. Sometimes they act surprised as if they didn't expect a client, even though your name was written down in the appointment book. And if no one gestures to you after you check-in, head to the little closet off to your immediate right and "change," aka put a smock over your clothes, then seat yourself and wait to be called. read more

First off, teenage girls are infamous for caring about their hair, so I mean these 5 stars with all my heart. For real though, I've never been so happy with a haircut than the haircut I got here. It. Was. Perfect. Everything I wanted. Impeccable bangs that lasted. I got the haircut I'd wanted for a long time but was afraid of getting. As for service, it was wonderful. I was going to a party right after my appointment so my stylist even took the extra time to style and straighten my hair (!!! Nice people make the world go 'round) so it'd look perfect for the party. And this perfect hair lasted, man. I didn't have a huge problem communicating with my stylist (I don't speak any Korean, sorry mom :() but yeah, my mom was there to translate when necessary, but it wasn't really necessary. That being said, it was just a haircut, so if you're getting your hair dyed or something more drastic, getting someone who speaks Korean would be a good idea. The girl who cut my hair speaks English well at first and then once I asked her to change the hair cut a little bit she pretends to not speak English at all. She even said I don't speak English! I think this is very reasonably priced hair salon with good service. I have been getting service from Joshua for the last 3-4 times, and I have been very satisfied. I did not like this place at all. If you are not Korean,don't go there. They barely speak English. I request to have my hair layered and the stylist didn't understand me at all. I had a hair cut at this place today, and it is disappointing, so I will not recommend it. From the moment I step in the salon, I know if it is not good, I will not come back. Before I came to the US, my hair stylist in Shanghai told me to find Chinese hair stylist, and I tried quite a few salon in Chinatown, none of them could work out the style I want, yet they boasted they are very good. Then I figure I should go to Korean ones, as I was told they are better. So today I went there, and I found this salon in the H-mart. But the result was not good. First of all, the attitude was not good. All the time I was trying to be polite, and I said thank you all the time,yet the hairstylist Sue was expressionless. Second is the skill. She did not cut layer by layer, the skill is just not there. She just cut it very fast to get it done quickly and got to next client. without attending to more details as my hair stylist in Shanghai did. I was recommended by a friend to come here and get my hair cut by the stylist name Eunice. At first she was very shy and mostly focus on cutting my hair but little by little she started making small talk which I appreciate it, shows she cares about her customers, I just love how she cut my hair anywhere I would go wouldn't come out even. Plus she was very detail with the cut. By the way the shampoo lady was very polite and speaks English which is great she explained to me that just by an image the stylist will cut your hair in that form and give you tips wether it suits you or not. Absolutely awful. When I made a appointment to come in, I only wanted some pretty easy, straight bangs. What did I come out with? Side bangs that are already over grown and hurt my eyes. In the middle, I had asked if we could shorten them up because they hurt. I was rejected with some nonsense. In addition, my hair was layered to the heavens despite my one request of NO LAYERS in my trim. I work in a lab which requires me to have my hair up. I can't pull my hair up in a ponytail now. My once VERY THICK and beautiful long hair is now a mangled remnant of what it once was. Lastly, the layers aren't even. At all. I came home crying and I live three hours away. My one question now: how am I even supposed to salvage and style bangs that are already overgrown?? read more

It's a love hate relationship. The skill level just isn't there yet and the place needs to be spruced up a bit. It's becoming dirty, dingy and dated. But I can't help but like being able to get an appt on a late notice and they are open until 8pm. They are also a bit cheaper than some places, which is reflected by the lack of willingness to listen to customer's wants/needs and skill level. One side was a bit longer and she said no its not.
