This is my spot for my hair!!! I come to get my digital term with Ms. Ahn and she is the best. I'm one of those that won't let others touch my hair... ya know what I mean? I get the digital perm where they do magic straight perm on the top and curls on the bottom. I like my hair to look like it's been curl ironed so she picks out the perfect curl size for me. I've tried several styles and Ms. Ahn perfects the styles every time. Now I stick to the one I like, since I've going to Ms. Ahn for many years (10+). This is premium Korean hair care. There's always a saying "you get what you pay for". I've tried other spot in Chicagoland and it's not what you would get at Kim Sun Young. Sure, I can pay cheaper but the quality I got was not the same, so I always return to Ms. Ahn to take care of my hair. With my digital perm, she explains to me how to care for my curls, and also let me know how the condition of my hair/scalp is and what I need to do to get improve my hair health. I made an appointment about 3 weeks in advance for a Friday morning digital perm. It typically takes 3-4 hours for the perm. With my iPad and AirPod, time flies by while I'm watching the show. They also have a small "earcap" that looks like a shower cap so your ears are protected & my AirPod. I get a cut first, then a perm. Friday afternoon with 3 hair professionals and 2 assistants. They are busy because they are able to work simultaneous while the perm client is waiting for perm chemical to settle into the hair, they can do a hair cut. read more

I went back and forth as to whether I wanted to write this, but I do think my experience was unfortunate and may not necessarily reflect their skill and service here, but I think it's still worth sharing. The TL;DR is that I was unable to get my hair coloring done and also got a haircut that was not very flattering. I felt I looked better when I came in vs when I came out of the salon. This was all despite the effort I made to contact this salon multiple times beforehand to ensure that they were able to do the hair that I wanted. In January, I had my hair cut and permed in Los Angeles, which I was happy with, but I wanted to also make my hair blonde with this hair style (I'm a Korean American with dark hair). I confirmed with my hairstylist in LA as well as the internet that you should wait a while to bleach your hair to space out the damage, at least ~4 weeks. I currently live in Cleveland, OH for grad school and heard there aren't many good salons in OH for Asian hair. So I did my research, found this salon in Chicago with good ratings, read through ratings, looked through photos, and then first messaged them on instagram to set an appt. I sent them reference photos of the color I wanted, plus a current selfie showing my hair to ask if what I wanted was possible. I also explained I was going to be driving in from Cleveland (took me 7 hours since I avoided tolls) so I wanted to really make sure before I made the trip. I told them also about my perm from weeks ago (it was going to be over 7 weeks since the perm for the appt day I asked for). I also called 24 hours later directly to the salon since I didn't get a response on instagram right away. The person on the phone booked me with Michelle. I then proceeded to explain my situation and told them I sent them photos on instagram. The woman on the phone tried to reassure me saying "it's okay, Michelle can do whatever color. Don't worry about it." I took their word. They also responded on instagram confirming they could book me an appt and gave me an estimate of pricing (starting around $350) and time range (3-4 hours) based on the color I wanted. The day of my appt, I show Michelle my pictures and what I want. She starts rambling about how the color I want is not possible, or needs to be bleached multiple times because my hair color is too dark. I was asking her to clarify if that meant I have to come in on different days to get it done, and she wasn't very clear and eventually just said, "It's okay, we will figure it out. For now, you need a haircut right?" So we cut my hair to a length I was satisfied with, but since it wasn't dried/styled yet, I wasn't sure what the finished product would look like yet. Then we went back to discussing color. First, she tells me, "okay, we can bleach multiple times, but it may take a long time, maybe even 6 hours. Is that ok?" I said yes (I knew it might take a long time so I purposefully asked for their earliest appt time that day). "And it's going to be around $400-500. Is that ok?" I said yes again. THEN she says, "oh, and the bleach is going to flatten your perm, so you won't have your perm anymore." This is when I was stunned and hesitated and asked for time to think. I was already starting to worry about whether the color would actually look okay on me based on Michelle's initial response to my request, but then to also not have my perm that I had paid for before but I still wanted to be a part of my overall hairstyle? I was incredibly disappointed. I was definitely ignorant of how this hair stuff worked, but that's why I tried doing my research beforehand and asked them multiple times, sending them pictures and explaining my situation BEFORE I planned a trip 7 hours away by car. I don't have many free weekends, so this was also difficult for me to schedule. Eventually I declined the color because I didn't want to risk not liking the final color AND losing my perm. But I wish the staff, all the people I talked to here, told me BEFORE I made the trip to Chicago, and BEFORE she cut my hair. I honestly would not have gotten my haircut had I known I wasn't going to get color. I know cheaper hair salons for hair cuts in the area and might've opted for another place if I wanted one (my hair was already short, but the haircut price was still $70). The staff didn't necessarily act rude or anything, but they clearly failed to take my situation into consideration despite all of my effort and wasted my time, money and energy. And honestly I don't like the hair cut. I look like Johnny Depp from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the lack of layers is not flattering. I have to pull my hair back daily to look decent. I'm just sad this happened and they may be competent at hair, but the inconsiderate communication was really disappointing. read more

This is the second time I've had Japanese straightening in this salon and both times I've been very pleased with the result. My hairstylist was Michelle, and she was very meticulous during the whole process. She had a lot of useful tips in maintaining my hair. I hate giving bad reviews but I need too. I've been here three times for hair straightening and won't be back. The first time was great and I loved the way my hair turned out. There was a huge language barrier but it didn't interfere with the process. The second time. I had a lot of curly patches after washing my hair and I came back in but they weren't able to fix it. The third time, they didn't remember me and I had to remind them of the last time... and they FRIED my hair. I felt like I was rushed out of the salon because of the damage and I didn't see how bad it was until I got home. I went to another salon to get it looked at and they told me that this damage was probably from 2 touch ups ago (because of where the damage starts on my hair cuticle) where they overlapped the product and over processed my hair leading to this incredible damage now. The most frustrating part is they didn't tell me my hair was damaged or explain why it was damaged or what to do about it... AND these past two times I was charged MORE than I was the first time. I had to cut off a total of 2 and a half inches and I still have damaged hair. I had the Japanese hair straightening done here and it did NOT turn out well on my hair at all. I saw the salon's reviews and the variety of hair types they did the Japanese straightening on and believed they would be able to do mine for sure. Straight out of the salon the inside parts were wavy and not straight. When I told the owner she just straightened it with a straightener. I honestly think she went too light on my hair and it needed either stronger processing, the products used needed to stay longer, or the heat in the straightener wasn't hot enough. I was told I could wash my hair immediately, but all the research I've done said to wait 48-72 hrs. The next morning when I woke up my hair was wavy. After the first wash 3days later, my hair was wavy and a week later it's even more wavy. Overall, my hair is less poofy but it is NOT STRAIGHT! I'm very upset by the results , as this was an expensive treatment and now my hairs been chemically processed for no reason. The salon and the employees were very nice and accommodating but my Japanese straightening outcome was not what I had hoped for. read more

I went to the salon for the permanent hair straightening treatment. First time customer, 100% satisfied! Michelle was my stylist. She thoroughly examined my hair before placing treatment. She was using different solutions on damaged ends vs healthy root hair. She was incredibly quick while making sure every last strand was covered appropriately. There are a lot of repeating steps in this processes and I have a lot of hair so it was about 5/6hrs. I have lots of uncontrolled curly and wavy frizzy hair. I honestly did not expect it to be this perfect. My hair is pin straight after just air drying. I have never been able to do that. I am obsessed! Wish I would have done it sooner! I got Suzie's semi-permanent makeup on eyebrows and eyeliners in December 2015, before they moved and renamed their shop. During my visit, Suzie highly/forcefully recommended the laser hair removal procedure to remove part of my eyebrows that didn't line up with the shape she drew, more than twice. But look at what happened... I'm so glad I did not purchase another one of her expensive products and ended up with NO eyebrows!!!!! I would never recommend their semi permanent makeup services to anyone based on my first hand experience. This place rips people off with low quality service. read more

I visited Kim Sun Young salon for the first time yesterday and MUST write a stellar review for this merchant. First I was greeted by the receptionist that took my temperature and was extremely friendly and inviting. Paul was my stylist and very quickly attended to me. Paul was by far, the best stylist I have ever had! He did highlights, a deep conditioning treatment, haircut, and blowout that was right up there with the rich and famous! He was efficient, yet took time to make sure every procedure was perfect. As a result, my hair turned out PERFECT too. I will definitely make Kim Sun Young and Paul my go-to for my hair. Kim Sun Young had been my place to go for all my hair needs (cuts, dyes, perms, AND eyelashes), so of course I moved with them to PHD! The new location has a chic, yet warm and cozy ambience. The staff bring a familial aura, ensuring a relaxing experience. More recently, I went in and got my hair cut and dyed by Aeri. She is fabulous, and she may be my hair soul mate! And her craftsmanship is wonderful. She is sensitive to her clients and personalizes each hair service to best accomodate for each person, bringing the best out for each person. She was able to identify the struggles I had with my hair before I could even mention them, and knew how to cutomize her technique to best target those areas. I loved how she just knew what I wanted, but took time to listen, and walk through everything and gave a thorough explanation as to what her course of action would be, taking time to ensure both parties were on the same page. Her technique, speed, and extensive knowledge and love for hair design makes her a valuable asset and an absolute joy to spend time with. Your hair will thank you. Ask her about the 'windy city' cut! Eyelash extensions are consistently, and beautifully done by Suzie! I have never had any uncomfortable stinging, poking, watery eyes, but was always met with thorough work and care. I don't trust anyone else with my lashes except with Suzie! You may want to consider scheduling an appointment weeks in advance, as she tends to be get booked fast and is almost always busy! Came here for full eyelash extension w/ Suzie. Although I give 5 stars for the welcoming attitude of the staffs but my eyelash not so much. I have had many extensions done before and I was surprise that Susie was done in 30 minutes. My lashes were pretty when I opened my eyes but when I got home I noticed that they're not glued individually but 2-3 hair cluster at a time causing it to poke my skin and too heavy that it started falling off in 2 days.
