I just had to leave this very negative review on Lee's Donuts on Central Avenue in Alameda. I was just there on Saturday morning at 6:50am. At that time they hadn't gotten out their glazed donuts out yet......No problem, so I chose the following donuts: 2 Plain Buttermilk 3 Old Fashion 4 Blackberry 2 French 1 Chocolate Cake 12 Total and I understand that the 2 Buttermilk may cost a bit more The Male Clerk totals it on his IPhone and tells me it's $38.50. I thought it was a bit high, but paid anyway. After I got home, I told my wife what the total was at Lees Donut's and she thought it was a bit high. I told her I was going to go down there next week and question them. In the meantime I looked at their menu posting and thought something was really wrong! Well here comes Tuesday morning, the day after Labor Day and my wife being a local school teacher here in Alameda Texts me at 8am to tell me that one of the other school teachers went to pick up donuts at guess where.......Lee's Donuts for the whole staff and paid $80- for 4 dozen regular donuts......still a bit high at $20- per dozen, BUT not the $38.50 for the dozen I was charged for just a few days before. So my word to all customers of Lee's Donuts here in Alameda........CHECK their charges, as personally I think they overcharge on purpose. NOW, I won't' even go back there, as I refuse to allow them to entertain their BAD business practices. LOOK at how much they will lose in the future with their greed! read more

I did not sleep well last night, so hubby and I decided to get some coffee and donuts from Lee's. Of all the businesses in Neptune Plaza (a little strip mall), they probably have been there the longest. Since I'm not much of a coffee drinker, I needed the caffeine to perk me up along with a donut. The pour: one small Hawaiian hazelnut coffee. Mellow coffee, not harsh, nice hazelnut aroma. I was disappointed that Lee's did not have any French crullers - my favorite donut. They sold out and it was only 11:30 AM. I had to settle for a small crumb donut. These donuts are so light and delicious!! I was looking for a regular donut shop, nothing fancy that makes good donuts and this was it!! I got chocolate, cinnamon twist, and buttermilk to try. The chocolate was my favorite. It was light and fluffy and the perfect amount of chocolate. The cinnamon was pretty good too! It could have used a teeny tiny bit more glaze but I still thought it was good and would order it again. I haven't gotten to the buttermilk one, but I'm sure it's equally delicious. read more

Small mom & pop shop next to my favorite Asian rest Pho & Baguette (that's how I found it). Love the atmosphere, reminds me of the shops I used to go to with my dad. The older gentleman (Lee) always really friendly and greeting people like he's known you forever and the kids (to me) at the register are always happy and smiling as well. Here's the thing: for some shops, the "Food Network" effect has changed donut making into some insufferably hipster pursuit, resulting in overly fussy, and overly priced donuts. Let's face it, donuts that are actually worth $3+ each are few and far between. That's the glory of Lee's. The donuts are tried-and-true donut favorites, and they are beautifully executed. The raised donuts are fluffy, the cake donuts are light, they just taste good, and you don't need a second mortgage to get a dozen. I stopped by here in the middle the day, for what else donuts. Needless to say most of the donuts were sold out and the pickings were slim. I ended up getting an iced coffee it was around three dollars and really no-frills. I picked up a doughnut as well it was a little bit more than a dollar and a half and really nothing special. They had a table outside in which I said it and enjoyed my coffee and doughnut. I can't say the coffee was anything great for an iced coffee, they don't really have an extensive coffee menu either. I probably would not come back and try another bakery or breakfast spot in the area. The place seemed a little dirty inside even though it's a little hole in the wall. This small mom and pop shop is probably the best priced and good quality donut shop on the island. They open at 6am and I arrived at 7am. The line can get long since there is only one person working but it's worth it. I got 1 1/2 dozen donuts, 2 bagels and cream cheese, maple doughnut (for the road) and doughnut holes. Lee's Donuts usually have large donuts. this location was no different. they also have crossaints and farmers coffee, many blends. passed on farmers. coffee barely average. eats: cream cheese crossaint (1.75) -above average size. crossaint not buttery nor flarkey -filling has a slight sour taste. -should gone for the donuts, usually a 4 star performer. crumbs: -cashier really dolled up, like a waitress in a Viet cafe, not a donut shop. read more

The donuts here blew my mind! They were so unexpectedly good. I got the yeast donuts and they were soft, pillowy, light, and delicious!

Let me explain why they received a four stars. If it was simply based on the flavor and taste of the donuts, I would have given them five stars, hands down. The donuts were amazing! The flavor was divine, the texture was incredible, they weren't greasy and they weren't too sweet. The donuts were yummy on so many levels! The ambiance and customer service is what made debate whether I should give them 3 stars or 4 stars. The dining area looks old, outdated, and the floors looked like they needed to be power washed. The other issue was the customer service. The people working their a rude, uninviting and not welcoming. One was on his phone the entire time and both of person was cold and hardly spoke. If you're coming for delicious donuts, this is the place to go. If you want an overall experience, this place is not for you. read more

Lived in Alameda for 10 years now, and these are still my favorite donuts. Small and family owned shop that takes pride in their products. The donuts are so fluffy and perfectly iced. Never too dense or too sweet which is perfs cause I'm not about that sickeningly sweet life. My favorite are glazed, crumb, and the filled donut holes. They do savory too, sandwiches and the best ham and cheese croissant you will ever eat. Get it warmed up. Do it. Now. Special shout out to them for employing some of my former students and keeping them off these mean Alamurda streets! I kid, but it's awesome. Delicious donuts comparable to the ones found in the south called Shipley's. The texture is so addictive, nothing like the ones at the supermarkets, which can often times taste rancid from being fried in old oil. The owners are also very nice and often give extra donut holes. For sure the best donuts on the island. They are not gourmet like you'd find at Dynamo Donuts in SF, and here they don't have "special" donuts. Just your great tasting, freshly cooked, and consistently made donuts. They only have 1 location as they want to concentrate on making great donuts, and they told me that if they had more, it would be really hard to keep all locales to have the same great taste, so they definitely are not focused just on making money, but really, just making reasonably priced and delish donuts. The donuts themselves are always good and it's a kick to have donuts filled to order. But the last few times I've been to the shop I've been concerned about the cleanliness of the place. It really is unappetizing to turn from the counter and, as you push the door open, naturally let your gaze fall to the floor and see used matches and dirt at the doorway. ICK! A good, strong and thorough steam-cleaning of the whole place and a rearrangement of the stuff on the counters would go along way toward increasing the integrity of the store and its products. read more

The new owners obviously do not have good customer service. A few months ago, I ordered my usual favorite doughnut from here (cinnamon crumb) and she tried to put it in a bag that she used for someone else's doughnut (which was a chocolate doughnut). I nicely asked her to use another bag and she gave me a lot of attitude in return, raising her voice and yelling at me. I looked at her and after a while of listening to her word vomit, she changed the bag. I should've known not to come back here after that incident, but I did, and I regretted it. Another day, I go in there with my significant other to make some purchases and that same lady was incredibly rude to my significant other, when she clearly had no reason to be. Long story short, my significant other called the manager, explaining the situation, and he took the rude lady's side. He also told my significant other not to come back. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this business loses its customers fast due to the despicable customer service under the new management.
