Cool spot for some local brews and pub food. They have a great view of the city from their patio and the food is consistently great. They've recently updated their menu to make it more vegetarian friendly. Not so vegan friendly yet, but it would be awesome if they were able to make a vegan version of the beer cheese -- that stuff is delicious! I highly recommend trying the Beer Cheese Philly, I got the vegetarian version with sautéed portobellos. It's probably one of the best sandwiches I've had there. This used to be my favorite place to go. I even brought some friend and family to come several times and see this awesome place where I enjoyed our favorite plate Oyster Stew . This is the main/only reason we used to go here. Today we notice that some things has changed , the menu , and service. It was not friendly AT ALL. We ordered as normal and when it was time to get the Oyster stew we got some steamed oysters instead. When we told the employee he got an attitude with us. This could be handled better , since my husband and father in law didn't want to get the server in problems we ate the food . To end the story we are sad to say we are not going again. My husband, sister and I went to get a drink and food. After ordering drinks, the waitress comes back with them and spilled ALL of the cold drinks on us (I got the brunt of it). The waitress apologized and we graciously accepted, it was an accident. We dried off and switched tables. Ordered our food and more drinks. The dry rubbed wings were delicious, but the Reuben and mac wasn't nor was the long island. The bill was almost $100 and I didn't get a discount or even a free dessert for getting cold drinks spilled on us. We've been coming here for years. The constants for me have been the higher prices and the fantastic deck overlooking the James River; for others, it's the beer. Like others have said, the service and the food fluctuates from okay to non-existent to great. Today at lunch I tried something marginally healthy from the latest version of the menu - a $10 Caesar salad. What arrived was a plate with a large pile of fresh, thinly chopped, white (core) romaine lettuce straight from the cutting board, drizzled with maybe a tablespoon of dressing and sprinkled with a good amount of shaved parm and a fair number of croutons - not chopped green lettuce premixed with dressing as is standard with a Caesar (Google Caesar salad and you will not find a photo of the Legend Caesar which I'm kicking myself for not taking). I asked for more dressing and was teleported to a cheap diner when she said it would cost extra. Since the $6 3-4 oz salmon fillet that I ordered came stiff and cold straight out of the fridge instead of warm as I was expecting, to the horror of my friends, I sent it back. Our server was personable but unfortunately immediately demanded to know why I was returning it instead of asking gently or just graciously taking it back. This is probably a result of management that nickels and dimes for things like "extra" (or normal amount of) dressing instead of her own curiosity or demeanor. read more

This place has so much potential but just can't execute. We like their beer and really want to support our local brew pub but, every time we go, there is some new ridiculous policy. For example, today we arrived and half the tables on the deck were empty. When we asked the hostess for a seat on the deck she told us it was a thirty minute wait. We said, but the deck is half empty? Why is it thirty minutes? We got no good answer. The last time we were there, we were told that we could make no substitutions/omissions even though we had many times before. We were told it was new policy because the kitchen gets overwhelmed. We have also had several times where we waited over an hour for food. Again we were told that the kitchen was overwhelmed. With the exception of the Brussels Sprouts, the food is just average. Most servers try hard but seem overwhelmed by many tables and spend a lot of time apologizing for the slow kitchen and mgmt policies. My advice to management is that randomly enacted policies don't make things better. They just make customers like me who want to be loyal very angry and not want to come back. If your kitchen can't deal with a full house (as has been clear many times), then expand the kitchen (and staff) or reduce your seating. With so many new breweries and gastro pubs popping up in the area, there are plenty of other options and the great view is just no longer worth the wait and frustration. read more

If you're a snob, you shouldn't go to Legend Brewing Company. It's just not going to work. If you're going just to throw back a few beers, have a burger, and enjoy the view, then you're in for a real treat. I could not ask for a better way to enjoy the Richmond skyline and my visit to Virginia. The drive through the neighborhood was interesting. It's very industrial and deserted. Then you get to Legend and apparently that's where everyone in town hangs out! When we first pulled up to the brewery, I saw that the patio was packed on a Thursday night. But even with the crowd, the wait time for a table was less than 15 minutes. The burger was decent. I expected a little more pizazz out of my Pimiento Cheese and Bacon burger but at least the meat had that grilled barbecue taste. It was definitely overdone. The fries, tasty, had the coating on them. There were reports that the green beans were overpowered with garlic. As for the beer, it was okay. I had the Lager and IPA. You could definitely wash down your meal and snacks with a few. The view? Gorgeous once the sun set and the building lights went on. The breeze, the space, the company, the vibe. I will start by saying in 10 years of coming here, I have had one good dining experience in terms of speed of service and food quality; this was at lunch time a few months back. Otherwise; this place is just comical. Every time I decide to come here, I always premise my decision by saying to whomever I'm with (or perhaps myself), "Well, I think I'm feeling patient enough today to go to Legend". The reason you ask... they are consistently terrible in terms of service & the food is at best mediocre The only reason I continue to torture myself by coming here is because of the large outdoor seating area; something which Richmond has barely any of. In fact, if it wasn't for the outdoor seating, I'd be asking Yelp to create a new rating... a 1/2 of star. So this last visit was no different. Once we were sat, in typical fashion it took roughly 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. Now, based on being an experienced Legend patron, when she came to take our drink order I insisted she go ahead and take our food order as I knew it would be another 10 minutes or so before our drinks actually made it to the table. Now, before I go any further, I used to blame poor management on this, like they didn't have the staffing right but tonight, I could not make up excuses for the servers as their were plenty on duty. That said, I have in the past noticed the servers were being run all over the place with tables not being grouped together. So, blah-blah-blah... I mean I really don't even need to get into it, all the typical stuff that is a problem every time I come, food takes forever to come, after it comes the server doesn't come to check on you for like 15 minutes so you're left to beg and plead with other servers, or perhaps the bar tenders inside to give you whatever is missing from your plate. An example... their sandwiches come with ABSOLUTELY NO CONDIMENTS (like mayo, mustard, etc) on them... I mean hey, who the heck might want mayo or something other than dry bread on their club sandwich? Anyway, you get the picture. All of what I'm describing is pretty much standard practice for this joint. As I said in the beginning, I've only had a relatively normal dining experience one time (although I still had to wait 10 minutes for my server to come back so I could ask for mayo & ketchup). So advise: 1) if you're really hungry, swing by McDonalds before you arrive so you have something to much on & drink while you wait for your server to show up at your table 2) If you want something really good to eat, don't come here 3) If you are coming for food even after I warn you, stick with the nachos, sometimes the wings are okay but they are hit n miss. 4) The Club sandwich is a total rip-off... You can pretty much be sure that any gas station in town that has a deli in it makes a better club... and the balls to charge $10 for it... on top of it. 5) Place is fine for drinks... so long as you're serving yourself at the bar 6) Bring your own condiments as even if you ask for them you might not get any 7) If you are "jonesing" for a Legend brew; I can think of lots of other places to get one from in town that are much better. read more

Finally hit rock bottom :( 3 of my friends that are all moving away from Richmond this weekend called and said they were at Legend for a quick bite to eat (they had never been and didn't know better) and invited me to come join them. Regardless of the fact that I already hated the place I couldn't say no to an impromptu farewell rendezvous. The place was busy because of the live music and nice weather but certainly not at full capacity and their was a lot of servers scrambling about. We all ordered drinks that were delivered in plastic cups and apparently iced tea never gets refilled. My friend's attempt at ordering a beer also took 4 tries since the waitress never stuck around longer than a second to have a chance to be asked. As for the food, we all ordered dishes that none of us were happy with. The appetizer took over 30 minutes and the entrees another 30. When they came the waitress said mine was forgotten and would be a while. My friend's raw oysters were delivered steamed. When my sandwich finally came it came with the wrong side. Giving this brewery 3-stars for their brew ONLY. A solid average offering from one of the oldest craft beer operations in Virginia. Additionally the staff here are awesome... with notable exceptions. Try not to eat here. Order up your suds and leave. Not only is the food very, very average but the service is HORRIFIC if seated at a table. Never go here on a beautiful day: they can't handle it, and they'll complain right along with you as your wait for food stretches into hours (plural!). Food's ok, and beer's ok - but as more and more craft breweries open around this area, Legend needs to try and be a little more competitive. Let's just dive right in on this review by saying Legend's view is GREAT! I went with a friend and her friends on a whim one day last week during the bike race. The atmosphere on the deck area is really nice! There are plenty of seats and a view of downtown Richmond that is to die for. I got a lemonade-tasting cocktail that was really, really good. Other people in our party got burgers, onion rings, and pasta and they were all satisfied. I gave them 3 stars because nothing stood out to make the experience extra special, but on the other hand nothing was awful either. It was a solid A-Ok experience. read more

I sat at the bar and sampled their brews with a companion. We thought the porter was really good and the ales were smooth and crisp. We ordered some of their special happy hour fare, which was corn dog bites for $3.99, normally $4.99. I'll tell you, beer battered hot dogs are gross and not worth the price! First of all the hot dog tasted really greasy and the beer batter had an odd taste. I was reluctant to order any dinner item for fear it would taste just as bad, so since I was in direct view of their kitchen staff preparing the meals, I watched. Here is what I witnessed: 1) The board they prepare their sandwiches, salads and other items was also being used to chop cooked sausage and chicken. Yuk, can anyone say cross-contamination? 2) The cooks had rubber gloves on and not one of them changed their gloves after handling and touching the register, tickets coming off the machine and I witnessed one cook rubbing his face, then preparing a sandwich. 3) I also saw them carrying most of the food from other parts of the kitchen with their hands, not a plate or container. What is that about? 4) I witnessed burgers being prepared then timed them as they sat at the window for 12 minutes before a waitress picked them up. Cold food anyone? For what it is, it is good. We had a super friendly server who was done a huge disservice by a really slow kitchen. However, it was a beautiful day out on their deck and the beer was good. Which helps because the food almost never got to us. When it did, the food was average. My "medium" burger was served very well done. They did have fried Brussels sprouts as a side and those were delicious. I appreciate the cool alternative to fries. If they didn't have the deck or a super nice server, this would've been a disaster. But it's really hard to ruin a warm, sunny day on their deck. read more

We ate dinner at the Legend Brewing Co on a Wednesday evening, and as the weather had warmed up the outside tables were mostly full. Our server was really nice and we had great service, especially considering how busy it was. We enjoyed our beers. My husband tried the sampler. The dark beers were especially good, with strong smoke and chocolate flavors. The Pale Ale and English IPA had strong citrus and fruit tastes. All of the beers, save the Light, were in the 5-7% ABV range and really flavorful as a result. Our food took a while, and I was disappointed with the portion size. The fish & chips = two square fish fillets the size of my palm and "American" chips-not French fries. I was still hungry after my meal! We shared the carrot cake and it was quite tasty. Our server advised us to skip on the Legend coffee, so we did! While Legend is unique with their in-house beer brewing, the wait and small food portions take away from what could be a great place to eat. read more

I don't know why I stopped going here, maybe because there are so many good places with great beer selections closer to home that I just forgot about it? My mistake should not be yours! Recently we've gone for apps and beer. You cannot beat the fried pickles because they are fried in beer batter! How have I missed this? We have gone twice since I made this discovery. If you like pickles like I like pickles, you are in for a treat. We also like to fill our growler with whatever specialty beer is on tap. Now I must preface this review by stating that I grew up at this place, my dad was a founding member and I used to go back hen the bar was in the basement and it sat no more than 14 people. Let me say again: best Reuben in town. And that's a bold statement. Bold, but also true. Saturdays at 1 PM there's a tour of the brewery. Great idea for something to do on a weekend. The place was in Manchester before it was cool to be in Manchester, and has been going strong for 20 years. A lot of people forget that Legend was doing Microbrews before it was cool. You can get your own mug on the wall. No other place in Richmond can boast of that. They have great daily beer specials and happy hour deals. I truly love this place. Truly. Always been a fan of their brown ale but this is a new favorite. Can't wait till Portsmouth starts up. Will be there for the Oyster Stout. We just had the Brat and warm pretzel plate. Pros: Lots of beers. Plenty of bar food. You don't have to come here to get their beer since it's sold in the supermarkets. The view isn't bad if you can get a porch seat. Cons: The beer is ok. The food gives you the trots. The porch seats are damn cold in the winter. (In the winter, it's hard to find a seat since the outside porch helps absorb the overflow in the summer) I just remember going to this place a few times while I was in school at Fort Lee and celebrating the ends of different phases in our training with other officers. There are few restaurants and\or drinking spots that have a view of the Richmond skyline. There is a huge outdoor deck that is perched along the South bank of the James River. While the water isn't lapping up to the edge of the outdoor deck, there is an unobstructed view over the railroad tracks to the city skyline. I have not been in the later evening so I can't say how things work but I know there is live music on Friday and on Saturday the music moves outdoor to the deck. Sunday night is Bluegrass night and It is kind of a folk music scene inside. I have been once for happy hour and I know that they have different appetizer specials depending on the day that you go. The night I was there was $1 taco night. They have a ladies night on Wednesdays as well. There is also a crowd on weekends out on the deck when it isn't blazing hot. They have specials or a weekend happy hour from 1 to 4 on Sat and Sunday. I do have to say that the burgers here are among the best in town and the "pub fries" or whatever they are can be addictive. Service is definitely better inside as I feel that the deck is so large and the service area so far away from many of the tables that it gets to be a little tough for the servers. This is a well established joint in Richmond but throughout the years their quality has dropped substantially. I've been here a handful of times and the past 2 or 3 times I've tried to give them a shot they blow my mind with grody customer service. Most recently I went there at 8:30pm on a Sunday and they already had their chairs on the tables, spraying down the bar for the night and shutting the blinds. There were still about 3 groups and about 4 or 5 people at the bar. That doesn't make me want to drink much less order food if you are clearly closing up for the night. You are the oldest brewery still in town but that doesn't give you an excuse to drag your feet. And why on earth would you get rid of your tater tots. Pro: The view is sweet, their tater tots were good, cool versions to their beers. Con: No customer service, usually only 1 or 2 beers on draft that you can't find at a 711, the wait time for food is greater than 1 hour. read more

We went to Legend on a Friday night for drinks on their patio. We were meeting a few other people there, and it was easy to find their location, there was plenty of parking, but no chairs left! We borrowed a few from a nearby table and sat down to grab a couple drinks. It took quite a while to get our drink orders in, and even longer to actually get our drinks. Stopped by Legends for brunch on Sunday with the family. Would have to agree with the majority of the other reviewers and give this longtime Richmond brewery three stars. It's beers are good but not great, and the food is tasty but not extraordinary. I tried the Hoovale holiday ale and the lager. Both were relatively bland on flavor (the Hoovale did have some hints of cinnamon, but really faint). We split an order of onion rings, and I had the Bourbon Street Hash for my entree. While the size of both dishes was large (I could only finish half of the hash), the taste quality was mediocre. The shrimp and sausage in the hash were small and bland, and the onion rings had too much batter. This Richmond mainstay is good as a place to visit with friends, but don't expect anything other than a typical brewery with typical pub food. read more

I want to give Legend 5 stars sooooo badly. Legend was pretty much the first brewery in Richmond so we've been coming here for years. It's kind of my husband and my "Cheers". He played on their dart league for ages and is always able to walk in and sit near a friendly regular. Unfortunately, I've just never enjoyed the food. I have pretty much just stopped getting it. I'll grab some pretzel bites if I want a snack but that's about it. The reason that I think Legend deserves at least 4 stars, is because of their awesome patio overlooking the river, casual and fun inside atmosphere, and they have consistently taken pride in their beer. They don't do anything fancy shmancy or trendy. They just stick with their usual lager, brown ale, and seasonal selections. Sometimes simpler is better! If you are looking for a fun happy hour in the city especially during the summer then Legend is a great choice! It seems a lot of the reviews seem unimpressed by Legend so maybe it's an acquired taste but I will ALWAYS love it here. read more
