Chef Steve Legrand has done it again! I was a big fan of Shiptown's and so I was delightful to see him open another restaurant. It is cozy and bright inside and I like that you see how the chef's really get along and have comrade-ery. Chef Steve is at the helm.making delicious dishes like a big steak dish and a wonderful burgers and other rotating specials! The servers are always very nice to you and will recommend the food you try and also desserts and the music and atmosphere is very good also. My partner loved the Atlantic Beach Pie which taste like a lovely lemon pie not like the water at the Atlantic beach L O L. My only start off is that I ordered a sweetbread dish to go for dessert one day and got the wrong order, as it was a savory dish. read more

I read the reviews on yelp and had to try this place - it did not disappoint AT ALL! Saw a recommendation for the "burger" and went in and ordered it right away. I did not expect what came and how it tasted. It comes by itself with a double beef patty that has american cheese melting off the corners. I half expected some fries with it but thought nothing of it as I picked up the creation with both hands and watched as the juices started to drip onto the plate. The tastes... well it was an explosion of juice from the meat, the flavor from the lettuce, grilled onions and jalapeños. The meat had a crisp outer crust and a grilled taste that I haven't in a burger for a long time. Simply - delicious! read more

Only because a six star review is not possible on Yelp. This place is truly amazing. The skill and care taken by the chef and staff are impressive. This is a very small restaurant, easy to miss if you're not looking for it. My advice, look for it! It on Colley Ave, in between 45th and 46th, on the west side of the street. There are a couple of tables, but we had the best seats, at the bar overlooking the kitchen. They have a small menu, that changes regularly. Every choice sounded great, and we ones we made were great. We started with the dates, stuffed with Surrey sausage. What a savory creation! Served along with greens and pickles, dressed with a first class olive oil, it was a perfect starter. I spied the pork chop being eaten by the diner next to me, and was wowed. I really wanted to order it, but unfortunately they were out of the chops. The server suggested the same dish, but with pork belly as a substitute protein. Glad I took her advice, it was great. The roasted sweet potatoes, topped with chopped peanuts were also fantastic. My wife ordered the butcher's steak, which was seasoned well and cooked a perfect rare, as we ordered. It was accompanied by a really nice creamed corn. Don't think about the canned glop, this was really well put-together, with just the right amount of sauce. The wine list was limited, but this is a small place. That being said, we had a very nice Rioja. All the wines were a flat $42/bottle, which isn't cheap, but, within reason. I mean, what can you say about this perfect gem of a restaurant that everyone else hasn't already said? We've dined there at least a dozen times, and have never once left without feeling like it's the best restaurant in Norfolk. With every menu change, I feel like we're visiting an artist's new exhibit, and can't wait to experience what Chef has created...yet all the while each dish retains that LeGrand "Je ne sais quoi" that feels familiar and comforting. Burger was suuuuper good. Cooked perfectly with the right amount of sauce, toppings, flavor and bread. $10 is a deal you can't beat; and though doesn't come with a side, I don't feel that it needed one. As a late birthday dinner for my hubby, we headed to LaGrand. This is not the first time we have tried to go, but it was the first time we managed to get seated, and after our meal we knew why! The resturant itself was small, cozy and had a slight hipster feel too it. The open kitchen was great as I love to watch food being cooked (and who doesn't, look at all the cooking shows on TV!) We started with the Lamb meatballs. The sauce was amazing and the fresh herbs accentuated the lamb flavour well. Although lamb can sometimes be very gamey, it was very subtle. My husband had the LaGrand Burger. It was a double cheese burger with fresh jalapeño. The bun held together well even though it was juicy. Basically, it was a good classic burger. The only downside is that it was just a burger, nothing came with it. I had the Beef Short Ribs with Brussle, Fingerlings and Shitaki Mushrooms. The beef was perfectly cooked and the sauce, again like on the lamb meatballs, really stood out and brought everything together. Normally I am not a fan of Brussels sprouts but I ate every last one on their dish. The fingering potatos were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, cooked perfectly. Well I was searching for this restaurant...so counfsed while apparently I was walking back and fourth past it foe a few mins. Then I realised, OH its right there. The restaurant was much smaller that I expected, but very much worth it! I enjoy the quaint closeness of the restaurant. Food wise, smaller menu but unique and tasteful. I would say if you'd like a new experience for your taste palate try here. I had their tuna app and the burger. Tuna app was good. It's an Acquired taste I would say. Burger wise, a delicious and hearty size but standard flavour. The menu does change a few months as I was told so don't expect everything you see on yelp to be on their current menu. I've been sitting on this one for a week and really shame on me for doing so. I had dinner here last Tuesday night for the first time and i have to say hands down, unequivocally, this is the best burger I have EVER had. Yes you heard me right. EVER! LeGrand Kitchen has been open about 6-8 months now and they're located on North Colley Ave. where the cupcake bakery used to be. Seating is sparse with only a total of 16 dining spaces in the establishment. There's the main counter, a few tables and chairs and another small counter top with stools on the front window. I could tell this was going to be something special as we were walking up to the building. Smells from the kitchen were evident and as we opened the door everything from the grill just washed over us. Yelper James R was with me and we both grabbed a seat at the counter, ordered a beer and watched the magic. I have to say I came for the burger I've been hearing was so good. Honestly I wasn't expecting much until now however that all changed as I was taking in the scene in the kitchen. I looked over the rest of the menu and ordered the the Farm Egg Schmear for the app and the house burger for my entree. Then I watched while the owner, Stephen, was preparing a scallop dish that looked out of this world. (Definitely a must on a future visit). For starters the Farm Egg Schmear was delicious. It was full of deviled egg, chives and smoked paprika with Ritz crackers to scoop it up. Delicious, absolutely delicious. Next came the burgers. At first glance it kinda looks like a Big Mac but it's a thousand times better. It has 2 stacked patty's, each covered with American cheese but without the club piece in the middle. On top of the patty's are lettuce, onion, jalapeno and a roasted shallot mayo along with a sesame seed bun. Words cannot describe what an excellent combination of flavors this meal has. You have to experience it for yourself in order to fully understand it. Just go. I'm not one to carelessly give out 5 start reviews however in this case 5 stars isn't enough. LeGrand Kitchen deserves a bigger stage and I look forward to watching them grow and expand whether it's where they currently are or in a new establishment. The sign said "OPEN", but should really say "Amazing food served here" LeGrand Kitchen sets just off the road in North Colley. It is an unasuming one story structure adjoined by a closed down barber shop no less. However, just 8 mos open has become enormously popular. The farm to table makes them unique and has drawn rave reviews. They currently set on a rare 5 stars with Yelp and I could not agree with my fellow yelpers more. Parking is by street and minimal in rear. I had no issue with a street spot on a Friday night around 6:30 PM. The front walks to the business were clear of debris. a few benches are present for overflow customers waiting to be seated. When opening the door I was immediately taken by the size of the dining room/ kitchen. Probably less than a 200 square foot area with two tables. The rest counters for around ten. Be prepared to get cozy with new friends which I really loved. The kitchen is more stove than work space, but what a beautiful huge stove it is. This is where Chef Stephen and staff make your dreams come true. The amazing fresh food produced from the kitchen is nothing short of exciting to onlooking customers watching from the counter. But just as fun...watching the spectacular plating a little over an arm's lengths away. I dealt with two waitress, both of them friendly. The one who took our orders provided some menu info. We were advised that the menu does change weekly. Ultimately it was the Glazed Pork Belly that caught my eye both on paper and watching it being assembled in front of me by Chef Stephen for another patron. My friends got the hamburgers after looking at some terrific pics on yelp. Within around 20 minutes our dishes were served. The pork belly visually was extraordinary and shortly later found the taste matched the appearance. Two large portions of meat topped with mixed vegetables, asparagus, charred ramps, crushed nuts, hoisin with a carrot puree. It was both filling and masterful to my palate. My friends shared their burger. Two meat patties with American cheese, griddled onions, pickled lettuce, roasted shallot mayo on a big Marty bun. This burger may be reminiscent of the Big Mac in look and even hints of the flavor. However, the chain burger is not even on the same playing field as the LeGrand Kitchen burger. You will need a fork and knife unless you can open your mouth like a gator, it stand 4-5 inches high. The wedge sample my friend shared produced a dancing of taste buds and most likely will be my next item ordered. Pretty sure this is a staple on their menu. I could not very well depart without desert and a new item on the line up. The banana pudding was scrumptious and proves that they can do it all. Big slices of fruit, lots of graham crackers and a smooth taste that pops on the finish. LeGrand may be new, they may be small, but I consider them a formidable competitor to any existing Norfolk eatery. The quality that comes out of their tiny kitchen is the proof in the banana pudding that they have lasting power. read more

I was prepared to love them before they even opened their doors when I saw the herb garden outside. The latest gem in NOCO, I got a chance to talk to the owner who described wanting to prepare "honest" food. Big focus on fresh, local, organic, I like to think of it as comfort food without the guilt. Every bite just made me smile, and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. My first meal consisted of a cucumber and tomato salad with optional shrimp on top. As the plate was being handed to they mentioned the cucumbers had been picked that very morning. The plate was quite lovely and had a generous portion of shrimp. Absolutely the perfect thing on a hot summer day, light, refreshing, crisp and clean flavors. The lovely dessert followed. A buttermilk custard with crumble. It had this great citrus tang to it. If I could have licked the mason jar clean I would have. The egg smear and the burger appear to be constants, and for very good reason. I really don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. The food. The people. THE FOOD. Oh! I thought of something: ~The guys that work there are kind of attractive. Shhh! *lol* Last time I went there, I was there for about 40 minutes, total. They made 20+ burgers in front of me and my companion! The venue only seats 18. And, other main dishes were coming out, as well. The food, including the burger, is just phenomenal! Date night!! No, like, I mean, the food, dates, I was here by myself. That's what I had for my appetizer! I love dates. These were great! Stuffed, they were their normal sweet wonderfulness. The appetizer though had a bit of a miss for me, I didn't *love* the seared oranges that came with it. Please note, this isn't because they weren't prepared well or anything, it just wasn't to my taste. Also, the smear under it was a little weird. But, I really did like the overall taste, so don't let all my negatives talk you out of it. For my meal, I went with the lamb stroganoff (it's really 2 servings if you're planning on a dessert and appetizer). This was a well balanced dish, no hunks of fats, a nice hearty sauce. Some minor dings, seating is tight and if you're at the high-tops you're gunna have no back support. After being there 45 minutes, I was constantly shuffling in my seat to find a comfy position, so a backed stool might go a little better. Service was impeccable and sort of like a tag team between the waitresses which I really loved. If I needed something I just flagged one of the three down. Plus, multiple folks checked in to see how things were going. Really it was a first, and I hope more spots do this! Dessert I had the second best bread pudding in the Hampton Roads (Close though!) Peanut butter and chocolate, served warm (although not as warm as I was expecting) with a cool (temperature) cream sauce that was a nice accent. Ultimately, this is one of those places that you look at the menu and you say, "Gosh, I gotta come back... like 12 times." and of course, each time you come back they're mixing it up and adding something new. Their philosophy is fresh ingredients, change the menu every 2-3 days, and do a good job with a few selection of food. Small, intimate environment. A little bit pricey (expect entree ranging from $10-$26) The only consistent thing on the menu is the legrand burger and pimento toast just a heads up if you like to look up the menu beforehand like me! I ordered the burger because i figured i want to try a staple menu item. The double patty was juicy and i liked the white sauce. The menu was an interesting mix of American and fusion food. For example, bulgogi with their own take on it. It was a good try but fusion can never be as good as the original. My only complaint is the lack of variety to the menu. My friend who only eats chicken as meat did not have any luck with the menu that particular day. There was pork, beef, and duck. That's it. The vegetarian options were only from the appetizer. Pretty happy with the experience. Not sure how i feel about the constantly changing menu, but I would prolly try their desserts if i were to come back! read more

Simple, fast, fresh and all so amazing! Breaking my rule again, but this place is phenomenal. The location is pretty tiny. In fact, they ran out of seats when we went. We ended up seating at the bar facing their grill, which was pretty cool. We watched as they cooked our meal, kinda like hibachi, but not. Speaking of, even though they have pretty decent airflow, you might smell slightly like the food being grilled. The food were great! I loved my chicken sandwich, which wasn't dry at all. Messy, but oh so good. I also tried their Creamed Veggie and their Egg Schmear, they ran out of the crackers so we had it with buttered toast. All of it was just delicious to the core! The peach cobbler for dessert was also tasty! They do change out their menu, so they might not have the same desserts avail. Either way, everything was mouthwatering! Oh, they also just got their beer and wine licence so now you can enjoy their food with a cold brew! Sorry, no beer tap, just bottle/can. Price is fair. You can get away with a meal for about $10. This review dates all the way back to my first visit in October of 2014. I fully intended to write a review after that visit, only to come down with a bad case of writer's block. Fortunately, I saved my notes on what I ordered: CONFIT CHICKEN: This dish consisted of an entire leg, slowly cooked in the oven with chicken fat, and then finished in a cast iron pan before it was plated. Supporting ingredients included a VA apple puree, sauteed kale, smoked vidalia onions, and Dave and Dee's organic oyster mushrooms from Sedley, VA. The meat from the leg was tender and moist, housed in a delectably crispy skin. The puree, onions, kale, and mushrooms combined with the chicken beautifully to form a symphony of robust flavors that came together with oneness and depth. It was profoundly delicious and left me in a state of gastric bliss. My next visit was in May of 2015, during which I sampled one of their pork belly dishes: PORK BELLY: With charred carrots, pickled shtiakes, smoked peanuts, kumquats, and fish sauce vinaigrette. This was one of the best pork belly dishes I ever tasted, sumptuous and delicious. All of the ingredients came together exquisitely. I returned again in September of 2015 and ordered the following; SCALLOPS: With charred onions, caramelized peaches, smoked peanuts, rice grits, and fish sauce vinaigrette. The scallops were melt in your mouth delicious.They combined beautifully with the medley of the rice grits, onions, peaches, and peanuts to produce an explosion of delightful flavors. After completing this meal, I ordered one of their famous bugers to take home for my dessert. It was described on their menu as follows: BURGER: Double Patty, Griddled Onion, Pickled Lettuce, Jalapeno, American Cheese, Roasted Shallot Mayo, Big Marty Bun. I was skeptical at first, as I overheard a diner ordering their burger cooked medium rare during my previous visit, only to be told that all of their burgers are "cooked to the same temperature." When it comes to burgers, I like mine medium rare. In addition, I don't like American cheese and mayo on my burger, and so I ordered it accordingly without them. I only intended to take a couple of bites when I came home. Wow! Was I ever wrong. The very first bite blew me away, so much so that I ate the whole thing, sending me into a food coma. The burger was incredibly juicy and delicious. What really sent their burger over the top for me was their pickled lettuce. It made me forget all about the burger not being cooked medium rare. You can't argue with taste. Lesson learned. Never get too locked in to your personal food biases. After three visits, I still had not written a review. I was determined to do so after my next visit, which took place earlier this week. This was also my first visit following their recent expansion, which now allows them to seat a total of 28 people. They can also now accommodate reservations for 6 or more people with a 24-hour notice. I ordered the following: UNI: Maine Sea Urchin, Grilled Avocado, Nduja, Lemon Salt. This was my first time trying a sea urchin, and it was a revelation of tastes that I thoroughly enjoyed. It also set the stage for the entree I ordered next: MEDITERRANEAN SEA BASS: With Benton's Bacon, VA Apple, Brussel Sprouts, and Charred Leek Puree. I love a whole fish dish, and this was the best one I've had since the crispy whole catfish I enjoyed at the Lotus of Siam in Las Vegas over ten years ago. The fish meat was tender, flaky, and delicious. The skin and the bones added extra depths and dimensions of flavor. The brussel sprouts were crunchy and delicious, and I loved the puree that came with it. I took some of the fish to take home, including the head, which I enjoyed for a great breakfast snack the next morning. Chef Stephen Marsh also treated me to a sample appetizer between courses, which was a beautiful slice of toast with pimento cheese and country ham. It was intensely flavorful and delicious. Dining at the counter facing their open kitchen is a sight to behold as their chefs showcase their talents. Watching them at work is poetry, passion, and precision in motion. The service and hospitality of their entire staff has been extraordinarly friendly and accommodating. I must start coming here more often. Tried a new place and it was good. I love the chef inspired changing menu. Came with a small group of 4. The place does not take reservations which to me is a bore and major fail in 2016. The wait was 35 min and they called to say it was ready. My party went to cogans for a beverage. Drinks: all local. All canned or bottled. Apps. Sticky buns and the egg smear somth. Both were excellent. The sticky buns used a Asian puff pastry to make a pork belly sandwich and it was the best tasting thing of the eve. The egg smear was delicious. It's the inside of a deviled egg and used ritz crackers. Ask for more of you run out. No charge. Dinner: Steak. Large portion. A lil too much fat and missing seasoning. I think perhaps the chef was leaning on the sauce served with the amazing mushrooms and onions. No side and no option to order a side and it was almost 30 bucks. Scallops. Had a great sear and the sauce was awesome. The leaks served with made for a great bite. It's served with 4 large scallops. Filling and excellent. 30$ Crab cake- excellent. No filling. Which is great. A small side of smoked potato salad. No option to add a side. 14$ Hamburger. Looked amazing. Didn't taste it. But everything you want a ten dollar burger to taste. 10$ Again no side. No option for side. Dessert: Carrot pound cake- served warm and grilled with fresh whipped cream cheese and some sort of tart coolie. Omg. The best. Moist. Perfect. Good for sharing Chocolate creme de potte. Excellent. Taste was great. Rich. Perfect. Good to split for two. Strawberry somth another. I didn't catch the name. Light. Fresh. Refreshing. Not too heavy at all. Over all. Service was excellent and friendly. The food over all as good. Big miss on no sides with the price point or option to purchase. The desserts were amazing. Lacking in presentation but ok. I'd go back at the menu change. Good for a date. No groups though. Missed the ball with no reservations. My only deterrent next to the no sides. This is more like 3.5 stars. I had very high expectations for this place, as I've heard that this is now a few of my friends' new favorite restaurant. I begged my boyfriend to take me here for dinner earlier this week. The restaurant has expanded since the very beginning; they bought out the adjoining store. The # of seats available for dining has nearly doubled as a result from maybe 10-15 to now roughly 25-30. The restaurant in in a small one-story building near Colley Ave. and 45th street. There is ample street and neighborhood parking, although it's not in the best area to be leaving your valuables in your car. Avoid coming here if you're a single young female once the sun sets. The restaurant is pretty small, but it has an intimate, cozy feel to it. I liken the mood to a small ski lodge where instead of a warm fireplace, there is an open food prep area where you can see the cooks searing the steaks and fish, etc. We decided to sit at the bar to see all of the action. Our server didn't cause me to remark, "wow, she's a super nice server, what's her name again?"...but she was polite nonetheless and did everything she needed to do. We started off with the oysters appetizer (7 oysters for $12). I didn't think think that the buttermilk, asian pear and horseradish combination really worked well together, although I will admit that I'm not a huge fan of horseradish. I thought that I would adjust to the flavors, but I couldn't take it after the second oyster. My boyfriend, on the otherhand, loved them. He had been craving for horseradish for some time, and it definitely hit the spot. This setback was more of my fault, because I shouldn't have expected that a different twist to horseradish would make it that much more delectable. We ordered the farm schmear, a deviled eggs cheese spread/dip. I liked the presentation, and I really liked the way the spread complemented the crackers. I ordered their infamous burger done medium ($10). It was pretty good. I can see why people rave about it. Is it a notch above the more fancy casual Five Guys chains? Yes. It was juicy, and the jalapenos added a nice bite to it. But was it by far the best burger I've ever had? No. The bun was soggy, and I think that I remember seeing them prepare my burger and set it aside as they were waiting for my boyfriend's meal to finish cooking. I assume that they wanted to bring out both plates at the same time; but by doing so, the extra couple minutes allowed the bun to soak up the fat/juices/sauce and not be as dry and toasted as I would have preferred it to be presented as. Continuing on to my boyfriend's meal, he ordered the mediterranean sea bass ($26). It was cooked great, but I have had other meals. What immediately comes to mind was the sea bass that I had at Bonefish grill one time, and that tasted better than the one he ordered by a wide margin. We declined dessert, because my super high expectations for this place was pretty much reduced to an overall Meh at this point. I am a bit disappointed, but I think part of it was due to my stupidly high expectations and the overall 5-star Yelp rating of this place. Possibly the most perfect meal I've ever eaten in a restaurant. I happened to be the first to order the newest offering, called Meat and Potatoes. I got a perfect little dish of gorgeously browned potatoes and leeks with field peas, and the most exquisite substance that they call 'beef butter'. Simple and surprisingly hardy, and so very flavorful. Next was the pecan pie with Ritz cracker crust. It arrived in a small jar, with the crumbled crackers on top, and I'm telling you it was stupid good. Had a unique maple flavor to it, and perfect in every way, even to someone not usually enamored with pecan pie. The servers and cooks were all extremely friendly and personable, and the chef himself asked me how I liked my meal, which I appreciated. Overall I could not more highly recommend a visit as soon as possible- I know I'll be returning! read more

Ok what the freakin heck? Legrand Kitchen, I just want to give you all the money I ever need to spend on food lol. We travel quite often and my wife is from LA, we love trying out new places across the nation and no lie...this was the best dinner and desert Ive had all year...almost of all time it's that damn good! The chefs are F'n impeccable and wait staff has great charisma, everything you need in a place like this. Totally blows away the cellars and zoes (food wise) in vb, seriously. I had the sea bass, cooked to perfection and seasoning was on point see the pictures. My wife had the scallops which were amazing too, not dry at all. The desert was banana pudding with Carmel and some other stuff which is to die for. You must try it out! I was hoping they had some ice cream too but man it doesn't even need it! So I was headed to another local joint recommended when I passed by Legrand Kitchen. I yelped it and saw review after review, all 5 Star. I turned around and headed in. Short wait as I was alone. Very small place, seating maybe 18 or so, which makes this 8 month old eatery even more interesting. I sat at the "bar", which provides a diner-like experience, but with 5 Star restaurant quality food. Patrons are able to watch up close and personal as Chef Stephen and his crew: Nick, Joey, and Megan, work their magic. I started with Spring salad just added to the menu today. Fantastic! Moved on to the Egg Schmear. And it was, as stated on the menu, the best part of the deviled egg. Braised lamb neck was next. Extremely tasty with the morel mushrooms! No need to use the provided knife as the meat was cut-with-a-fork tender and the flavor was phenomenal. And I could not pass up desert. So I went with the Butterscotch salted Carmel pudding. Yum!! But I didn't stop there because I saw a couple with the Chocolate Pot de Creme. Double Yum!! I travel weekly with my job and try new places all the time. Legrand Kitchen ranks in the top 10 of the last 8 years. Right up there with top eateries in Sonoma County, CA, Charleston, SC, and Portsmouth, Maine The only thing that would have made the experience better is if I could have shared it with my wife. This was the most stunning meal I've had since I moved to Norfolk. I love everything about the atmosphere (tiny and warmly painted with classic rock playing reasonably in the background). We sat on the long side of the bar (which is a slab of tree, bark attached) and chatted with Steve and Jared (the masterminds) for the duration of our meal. The whole place feels like your cool friends plopped a flat top into the middle of their tastefully swank and spare living room and had you over for dinner. The food (I took pictures, see those for gushing and thorough explanations) was, bluntly, sumptuous. These fine gents are disciples of aesthetic in every area of what they do. As in the atmosphere of the place, the food was all composed with exactly what it needed and precisely nothing that it did not. Our salad of grilled peaches, onions, pickled blueberries, and rich chicken liver mousse was exactly adequate. I mean that in a complimentary way. I need to eat chicken liver with all of its fat and richness, and it needs a cut of acid and sweetness to awaken itself. They know this, and they did it. These are people who know and love food. This is food that knows and loves you. This is an experience in dining that leaves you with a sense that you are glad to be where you are. Please see the photographs that I attached. I enjoyed this place. its such a compelling concept to be in a restaurant where the kitchen is the focus. Can you remember walking into a kitchen as a child and feeling what it was like to have a chat with your parent before eating about what you are eating. I know, the chef on the other side is probably not mom or dad, but how often do you meet the guys cooking your food? It's a high energy and interactive place with a separation at the dining room if you don't want to pick up the intensity from the chef and his team. The food menu is switched up weekly! It's always intriguing to think of what you might find new week to week at an out of the way place like this. (Out of the way being relative of course, its in North Colley... figure it out?) The rockfish dip was served up to me within 5 minutes of ordering and came with crackers and grilled lemon. Interested, I dissected my lemon to see what a grilled lemon had on a normal lemon and surprisingly, this crew throwing a new angle at a classic seafood garnish, paid off. A toasty, sweet, caramelized lemon was delicious, and still had the acidity to counter act and bolster the embrace of the rockfish dip. Rockfish on LaGrande! Staffing were fantastic! I am a cheap date, so for my waitress to check on me 3-4 times, to ask if I needed anything over the hour I was there, while I was only drinking water and chatting with the Chef, she's a winner. Interacting with the Chef was the most enjoyable part of the entire night. I mean I love food, but I love people more. I don't want to spoil the story, ask him about his inspiration for the place and how he did it, why he changes the menu every week, and plans for the future. Ambition is hypnotic. Interior for the place was an interesting twist to most of the restaurants around the area. We have the old fashion light bulbs, like those in The Parlor. The varnished wood counter top and the rest feels and looks like a... kitchen and dining room in a house. Not to trendy or vibrant, garish or thrilling, just relaxation at a home where you don't cook (let's face it probably eating better too). As far as the budget goes, bring your piggy banks! This is a place that, unless you are there and only partake in the appetizer, prepare to spend between 25 to 40 dollars per person. Not overly impressed. We were seated by the windows and they did not seal from the outside. Smokers congregated on the street and the disgusting cigarette smell made its way past the windows. Fix your building. Very little of the menu that you find on a Google search will be on the menu when you arrive. I recognized two things. I was really hoping to have shrimp and grits, but settled for rack of lamb and my wife had the scallops. The lamb was passable, nothing exceptional. The other food that comes with it on the other hand is just a weird combination. The scallops, while I will give high marks for presentation, had these weird dried up chewy things that I think were potatoes. Parking is terrible if they are busy and they only have a single "One Way" sign up in their parking lot, leading to us almost being hit in the parking lot as we obeyed the one way sign - hey you have to put it at both ends guys or someone will get hurt. We both had dessert and again - weird. I had some Appalachian mozarella cheese pastry covered with strawberry sauce - edible but not a desert and the flavors did not go together. LeGrand Kitchen is basically an upscale diner that offers excellent service and excellent food. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted and told that a seat would be immediately available. Despite the restaurant being completely packed, I was seated within a couple of minutes. Afterwards, my order was promptly taken within 5 minutes. I had the duck breast, which was pretty good. First off, the duck was extremely tender and moist. The duck was paired with farro and glazed vegetables, all of which sat upon a carrot puree. You'd think carrot puree would clash with the rest of the ingredients, especially the duck, but it had the opposite effect; it brought together all the flavors. read more

This is my favorite kind of place. It is small, everything is super fresh, local and prepared in house. I will absolutely be back. That said I have a few nit picks and one real issue that added up to me enjoying my experience less than I had hoped, especially based on the reputation. My wife and I went in on a weeknight, and were seated quickly. The place was only half full but had a nice buzz, plus the sounds and smells from the open kitchen. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and even though we interacted with several different members of staff, everybody stayed in their lanes, so we didn't get any redundant questions, or awkward service moments. Bravo. The menu is small and all but a few dishes rotate several times per week, so in principle you will never see the same menu twice. I love this. If you are going to be a local, fresh, seasonal restaurant, your chef has to buy into it and keep up with what the best produce of the moment is. This does mean that the same ingredients show up in multiple dishes as you scan through, including in multiple different courses, so it is incumbent on the customer to either ask the servers for a meal plan that gives the experience they desire, or to choose carefully. I have no problem with this, but if you haven't been here, it is a subtlety that you should be aware of. This week numerous dishes featured tomatoes and peaches. These are two of my favorite things, so win! My wife and I had some drinks. A fruit fly landed in my wife's wine and the staff replaced it without hesitation. Great. That did cause me to pay more attention to the flies throughout the evening, and the dining room had quite a few. I understand this is a hazard of have lots of tomatoes and peaches in the building, but it detracted from the experience. We shared an eggplant and tomato tartine for an appetizer. The topping was delightful, but the bread appeared to be sliced loaf bread, and I would have vastly preferred something a bit more hearty and rustic to go with the flavors. I expected something like a homemade, handcut sourdough. The dish was very good, but that little note was a let down. For my main dish, I ordered a hanger steak with tomatoes and okra, done medium rare. This feels like a dish that was designed when asparagus was in season, but modified when asparagus went out and okra came in; so be it. It is hard to get hanger steak just right, but the kitchen cooked it perfectly! Sadly, there was way too much finishing salt applied, and it overwhelmed the dish. I ate 2/3 of it, but I didn't enjoy it all that much (should have asked for a refire, but I didn't, so that was on me). Eating it burned out my tongue a bit so I couldn't enjoy the flavors of my dessert. The server noticed that I had not finished and asked me about it. I told her the issue and she said she would inform the kitchen, hopefully she did. My wife enjoyed her snapper and corn main course. The fish skin looked perfectly crisp and it smelled great. The dessert was a lovely roasted peaches and cream dish with blueberries, which smelled and looked great. My wife tells me the flavors were good, but I couldn't really trust my palette at that point. So, I had three issues with my meal, but as I said up top, this is the kind of place I love, the staff is great, and I will 100% be back to give them another try. Holy smokes. I almost don't want to write this review because then more people will hear about this amazing restaurant and it will become too crowded for me to eat there! We started with a tomato and burrata salad with grilled peaches and chimichurri sauce...absolutely divine! My friends had raved about the burger so I went with that classic and it was a delicious, perfectly cooked, juicy, flavorful burger on a fresh bun. Top notch! The carrot cake for dessert was moist and delicious as well. Service was friendly and fast, and eating at the counter watching the chefs cook was really fun. This is a review of the ambiance and seating - not the food. We decided to give Le Grand Kitchen a try given the raving reviews on Yelp. The restaurant has all of 10-12 seats and the interior better resembles a take out pizza joint rather than a "chill and unpretentious vibe" - unless you equate chill and unpretentious with an utter lack of care. When we arrived, a party of 6 was already seated, and we were advised by the waiter that a larger party than ours was arriving in 1.5 hours. So, he could sit us now, but when they arrived, they would need to be seated. Really? I mean - does that mean even if we were mid-meal they'd rush us out? We decided to give it a try anyway, but that resolution lasted all of 10 minutes. OMG the chairs. !!! Do yourself a favor - unless you are slim with a healthy back, go elsewhere. They sit you in these narrow metal lawn chairs with side arms, so if you have a tush or thighs, you can't sit fully back. And if you have a bad back, there's no padding AT ALL. The only other option they have is rickety looking stools at a bar. Who wants to be uncomfortable while trying to enjoy a good meal? Not us - we left. read more

What a great find! This little place has some amazing food! My BFF and I split the beef tips on toast with a perfectly cooked egg on top, and a salad with a combination of vegetables some roasted with a unique tasting cheeses (started w a B) with a vinaigrette light dressing. It was like they come out of the garden and on to our plate. When I visit next it will be hard to try something new. It was that memorable. Friendly staff. After spend few nights eating at the downtown and I found this local hidden place. It was recommend by the coworkers and hotel staff. The starter scallop crudo is off the hook. I was surprise and shock a little. Simple but very good texture and taste. I have the chocolate pot de creme and perfectly fit for two people. Service is great. As for the main disk. I don't have a word to express my feeling. It was very good. The next question is why not five star. They gave me a disk with a chip (need new disk) that messed up the presentation. Also, might need to replace the water glass. This is a good place to bring your date or for two people type of dinner. Parking is easy to find. Until the next time, I will return with my friends.
