Our extended family, all 13 of us, descended upon LeGrand Kitchen after enjoying a performance at the Wells Theatre, and what an incredible decision it turned out to be. A quick heads-up for first-timers: the turnoff for the parking lot behind the restaurant is easy to miss if you're relying on GPS. Several of us had to make a U-turn after the bridge. Thankfully, we had a reservation, which I highly recommend since the restaurant is not large. I'm not sure what prompted our host to choose LeGrand Kitchen, but every single one of us was glad they did. I honestly can't recall a single complaint from the entire evening. Despite our large group, the atmosphere never felt cramped. Instead, it was cozy and intimate, perfect for a romantic dinner, a family gathering, or even a business meal. The menu offered a great mix of options, including both their regular menu and a seasonal specials menu, and several of us ordered from each. We shared a variety of appetizers, all of which were outstanding: pork belly with candied jalapeños, a salad with the most delicious pickled onions, a winter salad with goat cheese, pecans, and roasted squash, and pimento cheese. Every bite was a hit. Entrees ranged from regular menu favorites to specials, including the LeGrand Burger (which we later discovered was named one of Yelp's Top 100 Burgers in America), short ribs, tender and flavorful pork chops from the specials menu, and the ribeye. Every guest at the table thoroughly enjoyed their meal, so much so that we all took leftovers home. The server and kitchen were also more than willing to accommodate individual taste preferences by exchanging sides, which was appreciated by a few in our party. Dessert was just as impressive. We ordered a variety from the menu, including the Blonde, Atlantic Beach Lemon Pie, which was fresh, light, and absolutely delightful, Chocolate Pot de Crème, and Carrot Cake. Every dessert was outstanding. Our server was attentive and pleasant throughout the evening. Drinks were always full and plates were cleared promptly, and service never felt rushed or intrusive. Run, don't walk to this hidden gem. Located on Granby Street in the Riverview area, it's easy to miss. They have black blinds to shield the direct sunlight as it goes down to the west. This gives the appearance of being closed. Parking is limited and located behind the restaurant and the adjacent law office. When making reservations my son was told to watch for the law office. The restaurant seating is relatively small with a large, spacious bar behind a separating wall. We were greeted by a friendly & jovial host who immediately seated us. Our two person table was comfortable with padded seats. My seat was next to a window ledge which was the perfect spot for my purse. The menu options were an absolute "WOW". Once I saw the daily specials, I knew exactly what I would order. The House-made Venison Sausage with White beans, Sea Island peas, kale, persimmons in country ham jus came with two large sausage links and an ample amount of the rest of the dish. It was a delicious mix, definitely enough to have served two. My son's entree was the Tile Fish with squash grocchi, mushrooms & brown butter vinaigrette. He proclaimed it excellent. We began the meal with appetizers. I chose the Grilled Cabbage with garlic yogurt, apples & castelvetranos. My choice was excellent. But when I saw my son's Oyster Stew with potatoes & thyme, I immediately craved it. After the meal we first declined dessert. But I decided just to take a look. What I saw sounded amazing. There was no way I could pass up the Combread Pudding in Toffee sauce with whipped cream & encrusted with candled pecans. Begging my son to share it with me, he promised only to take a bite. When he tasted that wonderful concoction he changed his mind and shared. The Cornbread Pudding is absolutely amazing. The restaurant changes their menu often. I wish I could illustrate the flavor explosion I experienced as I dined here at LeGrand. There wasn't a single item that was not ate, if that tells you enough! What was ordered - Girl Dinner : Assortment of pickled vegetables, ham , cheese, and jelly. Accompanied by toast. This was a perfect start to dinner as it satisfied every sort of craving for a good hearty meal. Butcher Steak : PERFECTLY cooked. I wish I had more to say , but oh my goodness.... the tenderness of the meat with the potato's and oyster mushrooms. A delight all around and would absolutely come back for this exact meal. this place has been on my list to check out for a while now and i finally got the opportunity to indulge . i will start off with, the restaurant is a small, quaint place. but the vibes are there . i did find parking to be a little difficult, as it's really not much there onsite to park . when we walked in , we were immediately seated . the bar area was pretty packed . since we already knew what we wanted to order, we pretty much placed our orders immediately , and the food came out pretty quick . now, i've heard so many good things about their burger , & i will say ... it did not disappoint. i almost want to say it's an elevated version of a big mac , but ... that's really not doing it justice . i did ask to have the jalapeños on the side and i skipped on the onions , but i really didn't have to add anything additional to my burger . it was cooked to perfection. and i honestly didn't think i would eat the entire thing , but i fooled myself . it's honestly probably one of the top 5 best burgers ive had . i did end up ordering a drink , the smoke show, it wasn't the best drink ive had ... but i finished it. this is definitely a place i would return to check out other items on the menu . read more

Oh no. Just no. Just PRAY you never get served by JENNA. When you walk in, the aesthetics are wonderful. The dark blue, gold, and dim lights are nice. What is not nice is our server, Jenna. Absolutely terrible. The moment we were greeted by her, we could tell something was off. At first I thought it was because we did not have a reservation, but when she shoved us into a corner table and was hasty, RED FLAGS started going off in my head. Once we seated she just left. No menus, no water, like hello? Where's the professionalism at? Later she came over with menus and just looked at us. Said nothing about the specials or explained the menu, we had to ask her. She acts like we work at LeGrand. At the bottom of the menu it states, "We love kids, please ask about our foods that accommodate." If you put that at the bottom of the menu, EXPECT parents to ask about it. When I asked about it for my sisters, she said "WE DONT HAVE KIDS MENUS" while rolling her eye, being very very rude, and making inappropriate hand gestures. This action alone, was such a huge turn off to her personality and demeanor. After we ordered, we took a glance around. We are a POC (person of color) family, sitting IN THE FAR CORNER of the restaurant. Once I realized that customers not of POC were sitting in the front, I could not stand for this. I continuously watch Jenna greet these tables with a positive energy, warm aditude, and explaining the menu thoroughly. Watching this alone made me switch servers. Caleb was nice and hospitable, but please keep in mind we told them about our current position and how we felt. In the end, my family walked out. We could not eat in anger. Let me be completely honest, this is considered a nice and local restaurant. I would expect to drop good, hard earned money here. With the prices you pay, I expect good service and to treat ANYONE/EVERYONE with respect. I can not justify dropping over $100 on dinner and get treated as gum under someone's shoes. I feel like Jenna's aditude towards my family was unprofessional and needs to be evaluated. Management should control this. If they can not provide good service, then what is the point? Overall, I can NOT support a local business that treats POC with no respect. This is my favorite restaurant in all of Hampton Roads/VB/Tidewater area. You must go. At our second visit the food, service, and vibes were all immaculate. Their burgers are crave worthy. The portions are perfect and dishes are well seasoned and balanced. They take humble cabbage and turn it into my go-to appetizer. Put plainly - I have never had a bad all-encompassing experience at LeGrand, and I'm remiss for having not reviewed it earlier. The service (both here at its current location and its original) is phenomenal, the food cooked with care, and the drinks at the new location are fantastic. After adding some soundproofing measures (panels) in the dining room, a crowded night out isn't a punk rock concert and is instead a lively event you want to participate in. I salivate at the thought of the specials menu, and always look forward to what Steve and staff have cooked up this month. We went in for their Valentine's Day menu and started with an insanely unique beef tartare, with fish sauce, cilantro and mint, crushed peanuts, and prawn crackers. It was awesome! New location update: I am pleased to report that my favorite "finer diner" is still killing it at their new location on Granby Street. The ambiance is very nice and the service is still fantastic. ABC license in hand brought a full house on Sat pm. Fortunately, they accommodated our party of 4 as a walk-in. Paper plane drink was sneaky good. Oysters, beet salad, and pimento apps were all 5/5, especially getting them fresh. Of course, my wife and I enjoyed burgers while friends opted for Halibut and Steak entrees, both "killer." The potato cake, served as a side with the steak, was mysteriously shaped but had an earthy, smokey flavor; texture was like tater tots. The meal didn't disappoint, neither did the service. this place surprised me in a multitude of ways. It felt like I was walking in to someone's grand living room and kitchen, and the ambience was elegant, but welcoming at the same time. The food is cooked right in front of you snd there are options for both vegetarians and vegans. This made me very happy because everyone told me they are only known for their burgers, but I got to ordered delicious bread, salad and roasted vegetables all of which came out amazing. We finally got to visit the new location (Granby St just before the Riverview bridge) and we love the space. The inside is upscale casual with some cool eccentric pieces (like an elk horn chandelier). We sat in the bar area at a high top. We were near the kitchen and no issues with smoke or noise levels. Our servers were great and made sure to be considerate about their recommendations and pairing options. We started with the shishito peppers and tuna Crudo. Both were on the daily special menu and did not disappoint. The shishitos came with a deviled dipping sauce that was fantastic. For entrees we go the Butchers Cut (NY strip) and the Braised Short Ribs with elote veggies. The only thing I would change is adding a less salty side with the braised short ribs and elote veggies, it was delicious but a bit over salted. For dessert we got the corn pudding and it was insane! Wow this place is so good! I started with their Paloma which was really good and only $10. They just started their fall menu yesterday and it has so many good options it was hard to decide. I got the pork belly appetizer, one of there most popular apps that seems to not change. It was delicious! My favorite thing was the scallops entree - the sauce was so good that I wanted to drink it! The scallops were cooked to perfection, they were on top of cauliflower steaks that melted in your mouth. The smoked peanuts on top added a great flavor. I decided to stop by after seeing this place earned #61 on Yelp's nationwide Top 100 Burgers list and was conveniently nearby. Before walking in: parking. This one was tough. Very small lot and only one street parking spot. Had to wait on someone to come out to snag a spot so not the easiest parking situation. So be forewarned. Walking in, there was a really nice ambiance! I came solo, so grabbed a seat at the bar. I came with a mission: the burger. While waiting, had a cocktail and a beer. Bartender was super friendly and gave a lot of good recommendations about neighborhood spots. Great conversation. The burger. I was initially a little disappointed that it didn't come with fries. But my disappointment quickly evaporated after I took a bite of the burger. Sooooo good. Easily the best I've had in a while. Simple, but executed really well. While waiting, saw the cornbread pudding go by to another diner--definitely on my list for next visit. Also looking forward to trying some of their other dishes. -Le Sigh- As I'm sitting here on my laptop typing..I'm torn between my duties as a Elite Yelper... and my wish to keep this restaurant a hidden gem, because it truly is one. From the outside, it's very inconspicuous and doesn't look like much. Matter of fact, if GPS didn't exist and there was no welcome sign, you could probably drive past this place a dozen times and not even realize it was a restaurant...lol Once inside, again, it feels like you're walking into someone's house. The ambiance is cozy and comfortable. Interior décor is very simple. Due to covid, seating is very limited and the tables are spaced apart. I really love the open kitchen layout. You can actually see all the cooking action going on! My first time here was in late 2018, and they had counter seating right by the kitchen. (But due to covid, they did away with those seats) On my most recent visit, my friend and I had an incredible dining experience here! I especially love that LeGrand Kitchen's menu changes frequently, with new items being swapped out pretty much on a weekly basis. They have a small menu, but because of that, they manage to maintain and deliver a top quality dish every single time! For apps, we shared a burrata salad. We also shared another dish that consisted of small chunks of pork, roasted potatoes and a fried egg on top (forgot the name of it). For mains, she had the rockfish with mushrooms and roasted squash (which was a new addition for the weekend) and I had the 30 day dry-aged NY Strip (medium rare). I personally love burrata. I would typically order a burrata salad for apps at any restaurant that offers it; you can't go wrong with that. The dish at LeGrand Kitchen is very well prepared. Simple salad with arugula, shaved prosciutto and the fluffy and creamy cheese on top. The slight bitterness of the arugula, saltiness of the prosciutto and the richness of the burrata really complement each other! The dish with the potatoes, pork and fried egg was pretty good. I admit, I personally don't really care for potatoes (though I LOVE sweet potatoes) but for me, that fried egg completed the dish! And using the knife with minimal effort, slicing open that yolk and letting the golden lava flow out over the food..straight up #eggporn!! LOL Our entrees came out just as we were about done with the apps. For her, she had a good size piece of rockfish. And I was pretty surprised at how big my steak was! Every component of both dishes were cooked perfectly. The medium rare of my beef was on point! The rockfish was delicious. It was flaky and moist, and roasted squash and mushrooms worked well to complement the fish. The food was well seasoned and you could taste the amount of care the chefs put into each dish. Customer service at LeGrand Kitchen is another strong point. The service here is always professional and consistent. Our server made us feel comfortable and we never felt rushed. She was knowledgeable about the menu and came to check up on us a few times throughout the meal. Parking is pretty easy too. Street parking is plentiful. Highly recommend you make a reservation! And if you have Instagram, follow their IG page, which is updated frequently with any changes to the menu or new dishes being put out! I was craving a burger, so I dragged my husband out to the place many say has the best burger in Hampton Road (and the #61 in the nation according to Yelp) for the LeGrand Burger. I sat in the bar, which I love to do. The best recommendations happen at the bar of a restaurant. That's just the facts. Let me tell y'all... this burger did not disappoint. It was cooked hot and came to us straight off the grill. I could see the flames in the kitchen from the bar. It was juicy, flavorful, and tasted fresh. I don't really do mayonnaise, so I took that off, but that didn't make the burger dry at all. Plus, the JALAPEÑOS were just the right amount of tang and spice to balance this burger out. 10/10 I went with the bartender's recommendation for the drink, so I can't quite remember what it was called, but it was divine and paired so well with the burger. We finished it out with the Chocolate Pot de Creme, which was a chocolate custard (more on the bitter side of chocolate) topped with crushed pretzels and sliced strawberries. I enjoyed it, so I give it a 7/10. I'll definitely be back to try out some of the other menu items. read more

Every town should have a restaurant that does the common uncommonly well. LeGrand does that for Norfolk, and it was fantastic sharing food and drink with friends here. I started with a martini, which had some non-standard ingredients. I was skeptical, but it worked, and I'd drink it again. We moved onto appetizers and shared the pork belly and the pimento cheese - both of which were excellent. I had the steak with potato gratin, oyster mushrooms, and a red wine sauce - amazing! My friends had the lamb shank and the burger and both passed rave reviews. All of it was complemented by a couple of excellent bottles of wine. Overall, we had a pretty good sampling of the menu at LeGrand and I was impressed with how much effort they put into every detail! my husband and i were going to hear roy williams speak at the norfolk forum and decided last minute to grab supper before. called la grande for a last minute reservation. we'd been wanting to try it as my son loves it. so pleased they could get us in! the service was fabulous and the food was better. we had the pimento cheese appetizer which came with more than enough delicious toasted bread for the spread. the cheese was outstanding! we both ordered the burger because my son says it is the best in tidewater. he is absolutely correct! wow! so fresh and full of flavor and just the right size to be filling without stuffing us! there are several other things on the menu we want to try so i am sure we will be back! read more

Their menu is limited but rotates frequently. He opted for the popular option of the burger, which is a staple menu item. He said it was very good, but not worth the price of $12 with no sides. I got the dry aged beef meatballs with ramps, jalapeños, miso, and strawberry sauce. Each flavor was delightfully present, but I was disappointed that the temperature was not as hot as I would've desired. I'm not sure if this was by design, but they were room temp at best. We came during their opening weekend at their new location. The parking lot was kind of dark and secluded but when we entered the restaurant, it was bustling, lively, and crowded. Having never been to LeGrand before, we had to try their famous LeGrand burger, and it did not disappoint. Appearance-wise, it did remind me of a Big Mac when it was brought out, but it was nothing like a fast food burger. The meat was just the right amount of juicy, without being too greasy or dry. The sesame seed bun was so soft and bouncy, but without becoming mushy. The shredded lettuce made it possible to keep the burger's integrity when taking bites. Overall, this burger is a must-try at LeGrand Kitchen. At $13, it was a steal as well. My only wish is that it included fries or chips to eat alongside this burger. I recommend the window seat. I also recommend the chef's table. I also recommend everything they have on the menu at any given time. Ever made love? Well have some food made by people that really put themselves into it. I've been to LeGrand on several occasions since they opened. It's always a treat - one that is probably more accessible than the locals think. Let's pretend the first visit was 2 years ago - quarantine continuum be damned... I remember being surprised. There were roasted brussels sprouts and I'm sure I ordered a steak. I remember that steak. I can't tell you what year it was - but I remember the steak I had at LeGrand was something I wished to be replicated again and again. Much like good love making amirite? That's weird, and I'll stop immediately. I'm remembering how the restaurant was so prohibitively spaced when it first entered the scene. It had a couple/few small tables and eating there took some forethought. Their expansion is a testament to the heart and quality this restaurant has at its core. You still should make reservations. So last night, I was catching up with a friend and texted LeGrand - hey let's see if we can "get in". They were quick to respond and offered their availability, a window seat. I loved the texting feature - every restaurant should consider this. We had a quick exchange that did not require the use of my vocal cords or the anxiety of some poor host/ess bound to the ringing. (The Ringing, coming summer 2022) The window seat was an unexpected plus in this experience. I loved the white noise of the room behind me against the quiet of the view outside. Watching the people of Lockhaven and Larchmont coming to grab their takeaway. One person totally made a face as she walked in - I bet she left with a smile (oh, you're bougie, huh?) The waiter suggested a Cava - I had never had a Cava and it was lovely. We asked for the sushi and pimento cheese to come out. Best pimento I've had, served with bread from a very nice French bakery downtown. The sushi was something different - a tuna toro - the piece of meat being named for the fattier part of the fish. The sushi rice was damn good. The toro did not have a super easy bite to it but it was tasty - less rice would have made it one bite per piece which would have been preferable. I really wanted to get a steak but it was priced a little high for the kind of casual dinner we were having. I got a burger and my friend got a chicken sandwich. We cut them each in half and shared. They were delicious. we were just silently in sandwich heaven. Crazy good - both of them. A couple glasses of cava, a couple of appetizers and an entrée each ran about $115 after tip. We could not have asked for a better Saturday evening meal. Looking over at the open kitchen you can see the conviction in the chef and his team. I follow LeGrand on social and see how they have a good time with one another and are excited about cuisine. They know how to feature an ingredient - how to make it surprising. I hope they are thriving and will stay with as for a while. There aren't too many restaurants in this area that make me feel like a fancy Jimmy Buffet. I saw their burger on a list of top 100 burgers on the east coast, so of course we had to stop in for a try. Sadly, I was extremely disappointed. I wish we would've ordered something else, so I could give a better review of the restaurant. The parking situation is definitely tough, so definitely give yourself ample time to park. Service was great, the restaurant was pretty. But avoid the burger at all costs. read more

LOVE LeGrand! The hubs and I came here for date night while we were in the area. I was super excited to check this place out, as when you step in, it's kind of like going over to a friend's house - very intimate, cozy, and inviting! We ordered: +the House Charcuterie - yes, all the meats were house-cured, and they were accompanied with mustard seeds, slices of apples, and grilled bread; so good! +Burrata Salad - generously served with roasted beets, pecans, malted VA apple, and arugula; this dish was super fresh, and I loved the creamy burrata (who doesn't?!) +the BEYOND Burger - double patties, griddled onions, pickled lettuce, jalapenos, American cheese, roasted shallot mayo, and a Big Marty bun; probably one of the best burgers I've had, and you do NOT miss the meat! This was cooked to perfection, and all the combination of the toppings and that roasted shallot mayo (YAS) was sooo addicting! Probably could have stuffed ourselves with 6 more AHAHA +the Black Seabass - with cauliflower puree, charred Brussel sprouts, and VA apple; unfortunately, wasn't a fan of this dish, as the seabass had a super fishy smell to it and was overly salty (like, I love salt, but this was just way too much) +the Atlantic Beach Pie - lemon, saltine crust, and whipped cream; honestly, we didn't really have much room for the dessert, but had to try this! The staff here are so friendly and super kind; we were checked-in throughout our evening to ensure that everything was going well. Review update... I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am happy to hear that the business isn't closing down and they are moving.. Please give this place a shot before they move.. the prices are a bit steep, but the food is worth it. They cook everything from scratch, so don't expect to only wait 10 minutes for your food to arrive. I've taken family members here and my friends, recommended it to my bosses, and they all loved it. read more
