Lela is awesome! I'm the type that loves the dramatic look for lashes and that's what I got! She listens to exactly what you want, whether it's a natural look, in between or the full dramatic look. Lela was absolutely awesome to work with! I did a bridal hair and makeup trial with her and I hired her to do my day-of bridal hair and makeup as well. The trial went well. Lela listened to my thought process and what I was interested in. We tried a few different hairstyles, and she did my makeup in stages so we could adjust and build as we went. I left her studio with a better idea of my options, and since we did my trial in the morning I could see how the makeup with last and wear throughout the day. For my wedding day hair and makeup, it was as close to perfect as you can get. For my hair, I asked her to put more volume into my crown. When she was done, I was actually a little worried that it was too much volume and that it would look kind of weird and showy. She reassured me that it would photo well, and that it's better to keep the volume since it'll deflate throughout the day. Boy am I glad I listened to her - my hair with the extra volume in the crown did photo beautifully! And in looking at the wedding photos throughout the day until nighttime, I was able to tell that it was starting to deflate but not to the extent of flatness since we had started off bigger. Lela definitely knows her stuff so if you're feeling uncomfortable about something, talk to her about it but know that you can trust her suggestions. As far as my wedding day makeup, I had full on waterworks going right before I walked down the aisle. I totally lost it right before the doors opened, and I was so sure that my makeup was totally destroyed from how much I cried. Guess what - it remained PERFECT. IT WAS MAGIC. My cheeks didn't have streaks running down, and somehow my eye makeup remained intact - no smudging of liner/shadow/mascara at all! I really don't know how it could have stayed so perfect from how much crying I did, but it weathered the storm for sure. Overall, Lela was great to work with, very professional, patient and sweet, and very good at what she does. Overall I like the makeup. She made my skin looks flawless, my skin texture is well hidden underneath the layer of foundation. However there is no wow factor about my makeup and hair. About the owner/ place: she is very nice, informative, detail oriented meticulous and serious about her work. I love her work ethics!! She told me ahead what she will do to my face. A week before the date she sent over a long message with detail instruction prior to the appointment date. She notices right away that I added extra hair pins to both sides and immediately help me fix it so it can hide from photos. She has soft and gentle hands, it put me to sleep whenever she works on my eyeshadows. The place is clean organize spacious and nice. Areas for improvements: Even though my makeup was flawless, it didn't hold up throughout the shoot as I expect to be. After roughly 1.5 hours my makeup starts to fall apart. My face looks greasy and shiny (disco ball) My hair fall apart shortly after I got home and change into my dress for the shoot. My eye makeup was too top heavy and the bottom was bare. It did not balance out. Her choice of lashes are on point. In the beginning it was poking at me but once she fix it a few times it is good to go!! Removing them was painless and effortless (which I love) My drawn lips are crooked, and overdrawn. The choice of lipgloss is nice ...I have nothing to say about that. She even give me sample for touchup. My hair - I did not like it the first time and nor did I like it the second time when she redo it. I like my braids to look nice, neat and tight as well as my curls. I shown her the photos because I had my hair/makeup done a few times where the lady was unable to imitate the photos that I shown. I held it up for her to follow and use it as guide as well. Originally I wanted to be fishtail (she never told me she could not make it happen) Since I am already there and half way done I agreed on the regular braids, however it was not tight neat and nice looking. I had the privilege of having Lela as my makeup artist on my wedding day. She was referred to by my friend and gets booked way in advance! Her prices are steep but she's a pro at what she does. I used other makeup stylists who were a bit cheaper than the bridesmaids and they knew of her and agreed she was more of a veteran than they were. In the wedding package I chose the engagement shoot makeup and hair/trial run and wedding day of hair and makeup. I have monolids and when applying one of the fake lashes, it created a crease in one eye and not the other. I thought it wasn't a big deal at the time but the photos came out it looked so wonky. So when I expressed my concern Lela worked with my crazy schedule to fit me in again for another complimentary session. I don't really apply makeup heavily or wear dark colored lips but she ensured me it would looks beautiful in photos so I trusted her and it did!!! On wedding day I put my full confidence in Lela and my hair and makeup turned even 1000% times more beautiful than I could've imagined! It was such a great feeling to be the most beautiful you've ever been on your wedding day and not let your hair or makeup be a concern. I used Lela for makeup over the weekend for my wedding and I didn't like the results. Her skills might have worked for other people but didn't work for me. I came for my engagement/trial and I gave her a look from Sophia Lau's instagram and the result came out terrible, I look darker and uglier than when I was naturally. The foundation was cakey and didn't do anything for me. I was frustrated and I expressed my concerns and she did erase my airbrush foundation and put on a foundation that is more natural and improved my look dramatically. The look has improved but it is not something spectacular that I have paid so much money for. I have got my makeup done at Benefit and Mac counters and these artists could achieve that look for me. She also did my hair for the engagement pictures, the hair curls she did came undone over a little more than 1 hour. I left her apartment around 5:30 p.m. since I have a shoot at 6:30 . I checked the first few shots we did we should be around 6:50 since we had to walk into the beach and my hair was already undone. To be fair there was wind on the beach at Mori Point but that shouldn't have deflated my hair that much. My curls were beach waves for lob. Unfortunately I already made the deposit for her since her Instagram photos look nice so I had to bite the bullet and go through with the contract. I brought up all those concerns and suggested that for the look for my wedding day I want dewy makeup and I gave her a look on sophia Lau instagram, #donaldandanna# to achieve. I guess the makeup turned out okay but still looks so unnatural in real life. I think a good bridal makeup artist will know how to balance things out to make the bride look good in real life and on camera. I don't think Lela was able to achieve that for me. The hair was a disaster. I gave her the look from blogger Gary Pepper Fb's page profile pic posted on March 22 and please see attached picture for what I got. When I saw the direction the hair was going I told her that maybe I should do my hair exactly for my engagement picture since the hair was so crazy and aged me. She assured me that she has to do tight curls for the styles to keep up the whole day and the curls will soften and I will achieve that look a couple of hours/when I step right outside. It never did and I got ugly hair for the most important day of my life. Seriously I can achieve this look at home doing it by myself. So I paid a load of money to achieve a look that I can go to a Mac counter and get free makeup for about $50 worth of products that I can use and hair I can do myself. She might be talented at doing up-dos but makeup and curls I wouldn't recommend. The reason I might look good in photos because I had a good photographer and that kind of mitigate the damages. Lela did my makeup and hair for my wedding on Jan 2013. I am so glad I hired her. My husband hates makeup and wishes that I wouldn't wear any. But he told me I was so beautiful, so I was SOLD! I would describe her style has "Clean", and "Fresh". I definitely didn't want the smokey eye. You don't look and feel like you're wearing "makeup" and the pictures came out really amazing and natural looking. The makeup lasts through the day and night and it doesn't run even after the day was through. I did two consultations with her. The first for Hair and Makeup and the Second for just Hair because I changed my mind about my hair. The first consultation costs $100 and the other was $50 since it just was hair. From what I remember, she told me her prices went up so these numbers may not be the same. I even changed my mind about the front of the hairstyle two weeks before the wedding and with only just a picture to show her, she executed it so perfectly on the day of. My only complaint: I also asked her to have her assistant do the makeup of my maid of honor and my mom. The only complaint I have is that she forgot that I paid extra to have "air-brush" makeup on my mom and my maid-of honor. So, my mom had to remind her. I didn't mention that my maid of honor needed air brushing too because I was occupied with other things. But I wish I had my contract to remind her assistant. Additionally, I didn't particularly like the way her assistant did the makeup on them - I suggest you ask her for sample pictures of her assistant's work so that you know what you're paying for. Anyway, I don't hold this against Lela. She, herself, does AMAZING work. Make sure you give time to find parking because her studio is located on a busy street. read more

I found Lela through Yelp and had her do my wedding reception hair and make up - I was very happy with her services! Lela did my bridal hair and makeup as well as my mother's, while her assistants provided services for my mother-in-law and three bridesmaids. The team arrived on time at our hotel and brought all the necessary products with them. I did a trial with Lela about a month prior to my wedding reception, and she was very receptive to my needs and wants. For example, we experimented with different shades of lipstick and eyeshadow until I had a "wow" moment and knew we had found the perfect shades for me! My wedding reception day hair and make up turned out just the way I wanted. I opted to go for the airbrushing option, and was amazed that hair and makeup that was completed between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm still looked fresh when our reception ended at midnight! Even though I danced quite a bit and definitely got sweaty, my hair and makeup stayed put. I received many compliments on how good I looked and continued to look as the evening progressed! I appreciated the fact that Leila gave me a lip pencil and lip gloss to touch up my lips during the evening (three months later, I still continue to use the little travel pack she gave me when I go to special events)! My bridesmaids were also happy with their hair and makeup, and I thought they all looked gorgeous. Their makeup was very classy and elegant. I also appreciated the fact that Lela honored my mom's wishes and worked well with her, despite the fact my mom was a bit picky and sensitive (e.g. she didn't want hair spray in her hair, and refused eye shadow and eyeliner as well). The one drawback with Lela is that she requires payment in cash the day of the event, which I found inconvenient. I brought the cash payment with me, and then realized I had only built in a 15% gratuity, while the contract I had signed included an 18 or 20% gratuity (I can't remember which). I ended up paying the amount I was short by check, but this was officially against Lela's policy. I would suggest that Lela allow for payment with credit card (via Square or another mobile payment device) or check on the day of the event. Withdrawing and carrying a large amount of cash the day of one's wedding is inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Aside from the payment policy, I was very happy with Lela's bridal hair and make up services and highly recommend her! read more

I went through several different hair and make up artist until I finally decided to book Lela Nguyen for her Hair/make up service for my wedding in November of 2013. My reason for booking Lela was really based on her work, her personality and how fast she responded to all my questions (and I had a lot!). She was extremely responsive which I admire and part of the reason why I felt she would be a perfect fit. I went to see Lela in SF for my trial. I live in south Orange County so I had to fly out to get my hair/make up trial done...I felt it was completely necessary and was very glad I did it. I got married in Mendocino, CA so a couple of hours north of San Franciso. Lela drove here with her team of hair and make up artist for the bridesmaids. We obviously had to pay for travel fees, overnight accommodations, all those things extra items that not everyone account for. Lela arrived at my room at the time promised, even earlier. We were ready to go! Because I had gone to her for the trial...I knew what I wanted and what required change. I will say that she took her time with me, never felt rushed. Always communicating to me what she is doing and asking me if I am happy with the result. I can honestly say that I was extremely happy with the outcome of my hair up and hair. My make up was flawless and I felt beautiful. My hair was amazing, exactly what I asked for and more...I honestly never felt so pretty in my life...and its very important to feel that way on your wedding day. What I will say that I was not 100% happy with was her hair/make up team for the bridesmaids. I noticed the bridesmaids did not love their hair and make up and they felt like the team did not spend much time on each of them. I felt the same way, I felt their hair could of been better...make up was not that great, very light compared to what they typically wear. I can tell the bridesmaids did not feel their best but at that point, there was nothing more to be done. On the other hand, I am thrilled with my hair and make up and so thankful for Lela...which I feel badly about since not all the girls felt their best. The problem was the bridesmaids did not say anything until after hair and make up was completed...so I do recommend speaking up if you are not happy with something. I can say that Lela does an amazing job but can't say the same about her team. I've been going back and forth for the past 4 months with whether I wanted to leave this review, as I've honestly never been the type to complain about customer service or send food back if it's not up to par, but I think it's just something I need to get off my chest at this point. After multiple failed attempts with other makeup artist trials, I was so happy to have found Lela. In the beginning, she answered my emails instantly and was very thorough. She was already at her cute studio waiting for me even before our trial appointment, and I thought it was nice that she was punctual. I felt like we had a great conversation that day, and as soon as she was done with my makeup and handed me the mirror, I couldn't believe my eyes as she did such an amazing job. I booked her on the spot that day. However, I noticed once she was done with me, she seemed a bit eager to start cleaning up and being done for the day. I didn't fully mind as I was her last appointment, but I felt a little uncomfortable so I left her shop and walked to the corner before calling an Uber. After that initial makeup session, I encountered a payment issue with her, but she was quick to acknowledge the issue and apologized. No biggie. However, she then left for vacation for a few weeks before we came to a resolution. Shortly after, she posted on Instagram that she was hoping to take a break soon. Understandable, as I also have a full-time job and sometimes just feel burnt out and need a break. From then on, it became more increasingly hard to get a hold of her and I would have to follow up multiple times. However, I gave her the benefit of the doubt and hoped there would be no surprises on my wedding day. On the day of my wedding, she arrived at the hotel earlier than expected, which I appreciated. I told her beforehand that I was hoping she could stay until my videographer/photographer arrived, so they can get some getting-ready pics. Unfortunately, OUT OF MY CONTROL, my videographer was an hour late. I felt extremely terrible and kept apologizing, but it was very apparent that Lela was ready to be done with us and take off for the day. She asked us multiple times to follow up with our videographer, and sat on the sofa basically with arms crossed and a sour face. It made me feel extremely uncomfortable and stressed out, but all I could do was continue to apologize. I still did all that I could; smiled through it and made sure to tip her afterwards. My photographer arrived on-time and he was able to smile through waiting on my videographer and tried to ease my tension by ensuring me everything was going to be okay, which I honestly really needed at that time. The last thing that a bride should feel on her wedding day is stress, especially if it's something out of her control. If I could have everything my way, I'd make sure my videographer was on time! Unfortunately, as I look back on my wedding day, I keep thinking back to how stressed I was in the hotel room as we were all waiting on my video guy. Lela does decent work, but I just needed to get it off my chest that I didn't fully appreciate her professionalism/mannerism that day. What can I say, Lela was GREAT from my first contact with her to the actual services. I looked at many make up artists online before deciding to try to her out. I picked her because I thought the photos of the make ups that she has done are the most unique - they make the women looked beautiful and multi-dimensional without looking like they have too much make up on. I booked Lela for both the ceremony and the reception, which were on different dates. Lela is very attentive and professional; never obsessively check her phone while she was working with me, answers all of my question to the dot (email and in person) and right away, was sensitive to my concerns, offered professional opinion that in the end paid off, and was always on time. I never wore much make up but I know one needs some amount in order to look good. She gently and kindly explains, when I express concerns about too much make up, why she has to do so, and would remove some to make me feel more comfortable whenever appropriate. In the end I was super happy with the way I looked in the photos! Lela also did a great job with my hair. I don't have that much hair and they are straight and can be difficult to work with. After dozens of phone calls, pouring over website pictures, bios and reviews, I came across a select few for the final running. The first person I tried at Alcheme was not bad, but I just didn't like how she applied my make-up. This is a subjective territory as every girl has a preference of how she likes her make-up done. The bottomline is communication and showing pictures of what you would like are key. However, at the same time, the artist should know what colors flatter your specific features. This is why I chose Lela. She is quick, thorough, and is a savvy stylist. She knows how to use her tools and color palettes to create a look that matches your style. On a side note, I love the mixture of make-up she carries such as: Channel, Dior, Mac, Stila, etc. I told her I wanted a blushing bride look and she worked her magic. We did a trial in her well lit studio on a Saturday afternoon. She applied my make-up and did three different hair styles. I booked her at the end feeling at peace-at last. Lela was amazing. She did a great job on both myself and my sister's hair and makeup for my city hall wedding. She was prompt, professional and has a very sweet demeanor which any bride knows is important on a day when you are likely to be at least a little stressed out. Lela actually came through when another bay area mua cancelled last minute which was incredibly stressful as I was driving down from Sacramento. Lela was able to see me absolutely last minute (on her day off) and then knocked it out of the part. I chose to do wave/50's hair and airbrush makeup (totally recommend) that was very pink/bridal. I asked Lela to do my make-up for my November 2014 wedding and I couldn't have been more pleased with the results. My guests said I looked gorgeous, beautiful and stunning. I am not unfortunate looking, but to be called "stunning" was a big of a surprise, I know I have Lela to thank for that. She's the total package. She does hair and make-up with the same great skill. She's professional, punctual and very good at communicating her services and pricing. I compared about 8-10 make-up artists and found that she was the best value by far. Her skill level could easily allow her to charge more. I highly suggest booking a trail with her. I found Lela after I had a disagreement with the previous MUA I had hired for the big day and she was very responsive and accommodating. I received an answer back within the next 24 hours and even arranged for a trial within the same week. You can imagine my relief since I felt like I needed a plan B ASAP after the first MUA. Lela was very considerate of what I felt comfortable in since I told her I have very sensitive skin. There were a few adjustments that I wanted after the trial and she was quick to fix them and delivered exactly what I wanted on the big day. I was not the most lady like (sorry Lela) on the day, as I was still recovering from a cold, not to mention the countless waterworks. But the make up held, even my bridesmaids were pleasantly surprised when they checked to see if I needed a touch up. The only thing my bridesmaid did all night was help me reapply lipstick. Lela did the makeup for myself, my mum and 4 bridesmaids on my wedding day and she was amazing! We all had the airbrush option and our makeup lasted all day (12+hrs) and looked flawless. My mum and some bridesmaids don't normally wear much makeup and Lela did a great job of making them look flawless and stunning for pictures without their skin looking cakey and thick :) I truely felt my best self on the day. Lela is the BEST!!! After having my make-up as a bridesmaid done by Lela, I knew I had to have my make-up as a bride done by her as well. She is professional, passionate, a good listener, and has amazing skills. I worked closely with Lela for almost the entire 10 months leading up to my wedding (October 2015). I booked her for the trial, civil ceremony, and wedding. During the time that led up to each event, Lela would proactively communicate with me via email, phone, and text. For the make-up trial, I went to her studio which is clean, modern, and welcoming. She always listens when you tell her what you want even if the words aren't coming out right. She takes time to get your look just right. I tested out the trial by doing my engagement shoot after which lasted well into the evening. My make-up stayed intact and my pictures turned our extremely well! On the morning of my civil ceremony, Lela arrived bright and early at my place with all her tools. We had talked about the style beforehand so she was ready to get to work. Once again, I looked flawless. With three days to go before my wedding, everything was chaotic but Lela was incredibly patient. Within those three days, we changed the call time to make sure everyone had time to get their hair and make-up done, I added some people, and then took out some people to the already humongous list of people needing her services. Each time, Lela told me that it was OK and everything is going to be fine. She never made me feel like I was being a bother or was asking too much. In the end, I had seven bridesmaids, two moms, one godmother, and me that got their hair and make-up done by Lela and her team. Emotions at weddings run unusually high and mine was no exception. A member of my party was really upset that her hair didn't turn out the way she wanted (which Lela didn't do since she was dedicated to me only) and was almost in tears. Lela saw this and was able to relax her and redo her hair to her liking and even lifted her spirits back to their original state. I am so grateful to her for diffusing what potentially could've been a disaster! Needless to say, my make-up and hair that day lasted until 2AM - when I washed it off.
