I stopped in shortly after opening and purchased two 9/16" rubber washers for approximately $1. Since I didn't have cash, I used my debit card. The cashier informed me there was a $3 minimum purchase requirement. When I said I did not need anything else, a man I assume was the owner told the cashier to simply add $2 as "labor" to reach the minimum. I found it strange that I was charged an additional $2 for no product or service. Although it was only $2, it was still money taken from my pocket for nothing. After leaving, I recalled that businesses are generally prohibited from imposing minimum purchase requirements on debit card transactions. I called the store to discuss the issue, but the person who answered, whom I believe was the same individual, abruptly hung up. I then returned to the store, where he was waiting near the entrance. When I showed him information regarding the law as it relates to debit card minimums, specifically 15 U.S.C. § 1693o-2 (Durbin Amendment to the Dodd-Frank Act) he responded, "I was the one who hung up on you. I don't care. Have a nice day. Go tell your President." Regardless of the amount involved, what disappointed me most was the attitude and lack of professionalism displayed by the owner. I have always tried to support local businesses, but after this experience, I will not be returning. The $2 isn't the issue. The issue is an owner who apparently believes the rules don't apply to him and treats customers with contempt when they're brought to his attention. I hope the appropriate agencies and card networks share his confidence.

After a few minutes I could hear two other employees in the back talking. Then I looked down a hardware aisle and another employee was leaning against a shelf looking at his cell phone. After another 3 minutes I gave up and left noticing there were no other customers in the store. Told check out person I gave up waiting. Went to True Value in Berkeley and greeted as I walked in and had receipt in hand and out the door in just a few minutes. They will get my hardware business from now on.

I saw that there was a sponge for 3.99 note in corner that this sponge has been priced 3.99 since 2/22. Not a bad price so I go to buy the sponge and screws. The lady checks me out and sponge rings up 4.59 And I immediately say wait the sponge is like 389 or 399. It's definitely under four dollars. She replies it rang up 4.59 so that's what it is. I said well if you would go look your price is marked differently. She said I can just tell you that this is what it rang up and this is how much it cost. I did buy it because I needed the sponge, but I went back and took a picture and showed the manager the same manager that helped me with the screws who is not far from the cash register and they both left about the fact that I went and showed them that it was 399 and she charged me 4.59. And said oh well Scott needs to fix the prices looks like Scott missed this one oh well. I don't know why they think that they're entitled to 50 extra cents. I just think it's shameful and there's plenty of Ace Hardware's. That have way better attitudes. If you're looking for a helpful hardware person do not go to this Ace Hardware

When he finally responded, he refused to let us use the restroom and told us to go "two stores down" instead. This was incredibly frustrating, especially since I was actively shopping and planning to spend money in the store. A little compassion and basic human decency would have gone a long way. It's disappointing that a manager would treat a mother and child this way during an emergency. Customer service isn't just about selling products--it's about treating people with respect. Unfortunately, that was completely absent here. Needless to say, I left without finishing my shopping, and I will never return. There are plenty of hardware stores that value their customers and know how to show simple kindness.

I drive over most weekends to just pick up a bag or two of gardening soil or some pavers or bags of grass seed...but, I somehow end up spending $150 on fan gardening materials, seedlings, soil, seeds, and so much paint! I've painted my whole house, including the basement and outdoor area, too! When I'm having a tough day, a visit to the Menards on North Avenue is so comforting. Especially if it's one of their "11% back mail in rebate" days or if I have rebate cash to spend!! Love the staff here, too.

While I was in lawn and garden I was passed up by two female associates eager to empty out garbage cans versus acknowledging me in the aisle or offering me assistance.
