I have been a die hard ACE shopper for most of my adult life. I have had nothing but great experiences at Lombard ACE. The employees are always extremely helpful and nice. The current owners did a great job in bringing this store up to date. It looks great and is always well stocked, clean and organized. I always find things easily but if i can't an employee is always nearby to assist. Parking is abundant and the newer garden shop won't disappoint. I highly recommend this business. read more

Probably the cleanest and most well-organized Ace Hardware I've been to. They didn't have the specific rust remover I was looking for but had plenty of everything else including a cute store cat just chilling. They had some nice plants that I wasn't able to find at my local Ace either. Staff all seemed friendly too. read more

Schroeder's Ace is what I think a hardware store should be. I will go in with every ridiculously stupid question about everything from tools to lightbulbs because I am the epitome of klutzy, un-handy, yet I will leave with some new knowledge and a valid answer from someone who knows how things in my home work properly (I do not), as well as a fine tooth comb of the stores inventory. Service with a big smile and oodles of help whether you're a constant local faithful customer, or like me, I stop in every season and stock up on all the hardware, furnace filters, deicer for our cars, Ball jars, indoor cleaners of all sorts, and that kinds of household stuff. They had the best price, selection, delivery, setup and service on a Weber grill this past Spring. This is what I imagine a family owned general store of yesteryear to be. Great service, decent prices, staff knowledgeable and willing to check for new shipments, know their merchandise and willing & able to help. I will go out of my way to shop here and hopefully if others do as well, they'll remain vibrant and relevant and open. read more

Every time I come here for electrical or plumbing fittings, they are always out of something that I need. Nothing obscure. Basic Stuff. Example: needed a steel 1900 box switch cover. One of the most basic electrical parts. Not one in the store. I'd rather purchase items from Ace because it is convenient. Don't even mind paying a little more for that convenience, but when I always end up having to go to Home Depot anyways, there is no point for me to go to this store. read more

Was not greeted when entered store, nobody offered to help me. Then when looking at wood chips for my smoker out of nowhere an employee beelined over to me said nothing and stood so close right behind me it made me incredibly uncomfortable and I left. This is unacceptable to treat a customer this way. Felt like I was being targeted for no reason. read more

I love these family owned Ace stores. I frequented Douglas Ace when living in Naperville so I was very happy to find Lombard Ace right after I moved up here. They have been extremely happy and wanting to help it's customers every time I have been in there. Today I had to get a new snowblower. So I start researching online and as always come back to Lombard Ace. They were $100 cheaper than Home Depot on the same exact model! So when I showed up for curbside pickup Lombard Ace had already assembled the blower for me no charge. Come to find out, now that assembled, would not fit in my Ford Escape so without hesitation the young man offered just to follow me home in the van and delivered it! Recently we really appreciated the people working outside in the flowers/garden area- friendly, positive, and helpful. I like how you can get help loading your car too, especially for big bags of mulch and dirt. I also appreciate their sales and specials. I highly recommend you get the Ace Rewards card- you get frequent coupons. They have unique snacks in their checkout aisles like Beer Nuts and Corn Nuts that are sometimes hard to find- fun! read more

Schroeder's is a great family owned business. I've lived in the area for 10 years and they're always willing to help out on a project. The prices are a little higher than you'll find at the Home Depot, but they are convenient and you gotta support the local businesses. I highly recommend stopping in here for your next project. Schroeder's Ace is a pretty convenient place for your hardware needs, whatever they may be and Schroeder's Ace is also pretty consistent in the products that they offer; especially if you are into certain specific brands. And they do select some good ones. And although this update is four years in the making, I can honestly say Schroeder's Ace has not changed in a couple of areas. The fellows working throughout the store are not only friendly, but they will help you locate items and carry them wherever you want them carried. The female employee force should take a page out of the guys playbook. Enough said. Schroeder's Ace makes a point of supporting local Lombard charitable causes; and for that alone I would give normally 4 stars, but no level of philanthropy counters snippy service. Ace, in general, does have a rewards program which offers routine customers some really nice savings, and on that point, I'm pleased and in terms of nostalgia, they have a pretty fun, old-time candy selection. Apart from former places of employment, I've probably been in this store more than any other store in my lifetime. A new house will make you visit hardware stores frequently. But I keep coming back here because they're exactly what I want out of a hardware store. A few thoughts, not all of them positive: You won't be in there long without someone offering help. There are one or two staff members that don't realize how their responses can be perceived as off-putting. Snarky, I'd call it. But it's not that bad, and sometimes I give it back to them. I've decided that, even though I'm allergic to cats, it's good luck to find and pet the cat that lives there. (The resident cat's name is "Mama.") No one will ever buy the "Kosuke Fukudome Drive" sign, yet they're still hoping to sell it for thirty-five bucks. One day last week, I went in there FOUR times to design and build a window shelf. They were very helpful and cheerful about my return visits. They've offered to set up a cot for me. :) I haven't yet had a staff member need back-up. They all know how to help, in whatever way you throw at them. Maybe it's not the best hardware store in the world, but it's reminiscent of good hardware stores before Home Depot took over. Nearly everything you need somehow crammed into a small space, with great service to boot. I can't say their prices are fantastic, but they're in line with any other hardware store. I recently went to the Ace in Villa Park and quickly realized that not all Aces are the same. This one is fantastic. If they carry what I need, and they usually do, I'm going to Schroeder's and will keep going there as long as I live here. read more

Normally I have had great experiences at Schroeder's until today. My brother was in to pick up screens that he had replaced so he asked if I had any that were dropped off which I did . He had picked up and payed for his screens as well as mine. When he arrived at my house the screens were not mine and apparently he was given the incorrect ones. I called Schroeder's to let them know and the repair guy lost it saying that these are not my property and I should return them immediately. Really rude and when I snapped back he told me how busy they were and refused to see if mine were ready. So I went there brought the screens back and the guy wouldn't even come out and discuss the issue with me . No way to treat your customers I don't care how busy you are. They definitely have lost me in my family as customers with this rude behavior. I hope the owner manager is reading this and has a talk with their behavior. I try to support local businesses and this is what happens. read more

I'm so impressed with the service I received here yesterday. After trying and failing at other local hardware stores, I walked in, told the cashier what I was looking for and she immediately told me which aisle to find it in, and another sales associate helped me locate it. In fact, he asked me specific questions about the item and found the exact things I needed. They were fully stocked and had all the accessories I needed right there as well. Excellent customer service! I am new to the area and decided to have a few people over on a chilly February evening. I got a great deal on a propane patio heater at ACE and spent a good part of the day putting it together for the occasion. Well, low and behold it was a defective unit and didn't work. I called Ace and spoke with a manager. Not only did they help me by putting a new one together for me, they also had it delivered and hauled the old one away. (for a very small fee which was worth it for me). An hour later we were all enjoying the heat and hanging out thanks to Schroeder's fine customer service. read more

On January 5th I attempted to return 3 sets of Christmas lights I purchased on November 29th with a valid receipt. I was told by the cashier that they don't accept returns on Christmas lights anymore. The cashier then called the manager up to the front who proceeded to tell me they stopped taking Christmas light returns yesterday. I replied that it doesn't say that on the receipt, when I purchased the lights the cashier never mentioned anything, nor did I see anything posted. The manager proceeded to tell me there were "30 signs" in the light department starting this and that's how it's been the "past 8 years". (I highly doubt it, seems excessive for a small light department.) Anyways, even with a valid receipt and it not being listed anywhere (and a day after they stopped taking Christmas light returns) she would not budge. I am a valued customer who frequents Ace Hardware regularly, as I live about a block away. I mentioned this, not that the manager showed any compassion. I try my best to support local small businesses but when local small businesses are cold and cheat their customers then it's hard to do so. I don't recommend you shop here if you ever need to return something because even with a receipt they refused my return. That's bad business. read more

As someone who always seems to need the odd part or piece that is unusually hard to find at most hardware stores, I am so glad to have this store in my neighborhood! The employees are so friendly and knowledgeable. I have yet to leave there without finding exactly what I needed. Sometimes the prices are a smidge higher than the bigger chains, but it's worth it if you are like me and typically have to ask for help to figure out exactly what I need and why. I know I'm gonna get good information from these folks, which isn't always the case at the bigger stores. It would be a challenge to come up with an item this little store does not have. read more

I like this store. Friendly staff that knows what they're doing. I prefer it over home depot because: #1 its smaller so I don't have to walk 1/4 mile for some nails and paint. And #2 the employees are friendly and knowledgeable. They have just about anything you would need for your house. Coming from an area that had a great Ace I was hoping to move to another area that had a great local hardware store... and there it was. All of the staff are very helpful, from picking out the right paint brushes, to selecting the best mulch & potting soil... to helping a not so tool savvy type of girl like me! They also carry top named cleaning goods... paper towels... whatnot! In the Spring they have a great plant selection and in the Winter they have a great supply of holiday lights..indoor/outdoor.. led and not.. I come shop here when my laundry is in the dryers a few doors down. I can find most of what I need here, as well as some cool items I don't need (but want anyway). The first thing I do when I go there is search for the cat so I can pet him/her. There is always someone around to help if needed. I don't care that the prices are a little higher than Home Depot. Getting help in Home Depot is like pulling your own damn teeth. Forget it. I'd rather pay a little more to get a little help when I need it. Brought some screens in to have a few more made as I was missing a few in my new home. First time I went to pick them up they had made them the wrong colors and wrong quantities, although my order was correct in the computer. They said they would correct the order. I never got a call saying they were ready so I popped in to check. Again, they were the wrong color frames and one was totally not the same size as the others...although the quantity was right this time. Again, I never received a call saying they were ready (as I was told I would each time) so again, I popped in. This time the screens were correct. But my goodness, expensive! I said "After all this hassle, I think a discount or something would be appropriate." The guy just shrugged and shook his head no. Mind you, I was very polite each time despite the errors and hassle. I looked at him and said "Seriously?" and he shrugged again. Another man behind the counter looked at him in shock too and said "Really?". He clearly wasn't going to budge. As I reluctantly took my screens up to pay, I told the lady at the register what just happened. She said "Oh my, my manager will want to hear about this. May I have your number so he can call you?" We wrote my info down on a copy of the receipt. It's been a few weeks and zero call. I will definitely look elsewhere if I ever need screens again. read more

Schroeder's is a classic Ace hardware store - maybe not the cheapest place around, but they have quality products and, more importantly, salespeople who know what they're talking about. The younger staff people can be a little flaky, but the older folks have never been shy about giving me advice on copper tubing, electrical switches, and drywall compound. Sure, I buy my paint at Home Depot, but if I need minor technical assistance on a project, I'll go to Schroeder's. read more

I've been going to Schroeder Ace Hardware for the last 22+years! It's is usually my first choice (before the Depot or Lowes) for plumbing needs. In general everybody is SO FRIENDLY, and if they don't know what you need, they won't lie to you and make some crazy-ass crap up just to have you purchase something! They take the time to make sure you walk away with what you need and if they can't they apologize - and you know they feel bad!
